Welcome

Computer Services for Kent & East Sussex

Buongiorno amici, I’m back following my holiday in Italy, it was a special holiday to celebrate a big birthday taking place this month. But the celebrating is not yet complete, my nearest and dearest will all be joining me this month to party the night away! I’ve just completed an initial warm up session by helping my cousin celebrate her 70th birthday and her 50th Wedding Anniversary, so I’m warmed up and raring to go! What a memorable month this will be, Maddona will also be celebrating the same big birthday just a few days after me, and if only Michael Jackson were still here, he too would be celebrating! Wow we’re having some fabulous weather this summer, I would never have predicted this back in March when we were simply longing for sunshine but instead getting snow! I do hope the weather lasts, especially as the schools have now broken up, the school summer break is so much more fun in the sun, for kids and parents alike. I worry though that, as much as we desperately need it, the rain may come in severe hits, which presents a flash flooding concern for us. With a good summer in the bag we should be able to accept whatever the winter decides to throw at us ( it’s yin and yang!), my preference is for cold rather than wet though! We have another bank holiday this month, why not check out the events pages for fun things to do with that precious extra day off!

Gardening Lethal Leatherjackets

Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a

4

by Pippa Greenwood

fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less good-looking than

The Garden their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick – then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you

won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www.pippagreenwood. com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

Home & Interiors Wonder Walls

By Katherine Sorrell type of wallpaper vertically all around a room. But if you feel like being daring, create a feature by papering just one wall, or choose different colourways of the same pattern to use in different areas. You could even hang your wallpaper horizontally, or mix up the designs to create a handcrafted, bohemian effect.

A change of wallcovering can transform cold into cosy, boring into beautiful and out of date into ultra-cool. Our lowdown is sure to give you some exciting ideas. A plain white wall. Boring? Perhaps. But it could be just the thing to show off a colourful collection or provide a counterpoint to brightly patterned upholstery. On the other hand, vibrant wallpaper could be the perfect way to inject colour and create interest in a room. Choosing the best wall finish for your space is all about context – and is just as important in terms of decorative effect as selecting colours, fabrics and furnishings.

10

Nothing transforms a room as quickly and easily as a fresh coat of paint on the walls and woodwork. Always research colours before you commit, buying sample pots and trialling them on large pieces of card that you can pin up in different areas

of the room, assessing how the colour appears at different times of day and night. Pay attention to finish, too, as flat matt surfaces appear very different to shiny, glossy ones. The most obvious alternative to painted walls is wallpaper. Choices include not only conventional machine-printed designs but also natural woven fibres, light-reflecting metallic papers and waterproof vinyls. If you are seeking something a little different, there are hand-finished papers that feature cut-work, stitching or appliquĂŠ, interactive papers that you can colour in or add stickers to, hand-blocked papers (pricey but gorgeous), three-dimensional designs incorporating crystals, beading, sequins or tiny LED lights, digitally printed papers made to your own design and even magnetic wallpapers that work as a noticeboard. Convention has it that you hang the same

Tiles come in as great a variety of colours and patterns as wallpaper – they can be sleek and machinemade or rustic and hand-made, shiny and glazed or matt and unglazed, perfectly smooth or nicely textured, or even digitally printed with your own designs. Long-lasting and hard-wearing, waterproof and easy to clean, tiles are ideal as wall finishes for bathrooms, showers and behind kitchen worktops, but they are also great for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms and utility rooms and, given their immense decorative potential, can sometimes work as part of a living area, too. Finally, while paint and wallpaper are by far the most common ways to cover a wall, with a little imagination and ingenuity you will find that almost any flat surface can be employed to create an interesting decorative effect. Timber panelling can hide wonky walls and is a great insulator. It also has a lovely warmth and character. Fielded panelling gives a classic feel, while tongue and groove is cosy and country. A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around

The Home and instantly make the room seem bigger, while sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have interesting decorative potential. Being waterproof and needing few joins, they are a good choice for bathrooms. Using paper-backed fabric to line walls is a traditional (if expensive) technique that is great for insulating against cold and noise and, taking this notion further, leather walls add luxurious character, soften sounds and are even fire-retardant. Cork walls are warm and soft to the touch, eco-friendly, insulating and soundproofing, and come in a range of colours, patterns and

textures. You could even consider polished plaster, which has a beautiful depth of colour, or sheet metal for an unusual, industrial look.

Life Begins Back to stay (and not just for the weekend) living with grown up children who’ve returned to the family home, and these mums and dads may have hoped this tax incentive would be the nudge their offspring needed to finally fly the nest. When the Chancellor announced a relief on Stamp Duty payments for first time buyers in November 2017, it’s likely that millions of parents across the UK breathed a sigh of relief. It is estimated that 3.4 million parents in the UK are

The phenomenon of so-called ‘Boomerang Kids’ (adults who return to the parental home after living independent lives) hit the headlines recently when the London School of Economics and Political Science

carried out research with parents aged between 50 and 75 from seventeen different European countries. The study, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, examined the effects on quality of life for older people who shared a house with a grown up child. Researchers looked at factors such as freedom to enjoy yourself, to make your own decisions and control your environment, and the results were disturbing. The academics who authored the study pulled no punches when it came to

Professional Services their conclusions: “We found that parents’ experienced a decline in quality of life when one of their children returned to live with them,” they stated, adding: “Parents enjoy their independence when their children leave the home, and refilling an empty nest may be regarded as a violation of this life course stage.” Preparing the ground for your child’s return The biggest mistake reported by people who have been through the ‘boomerang’ experience is that they didn’t discuss the terms of the arrangement before their child moved back in. This is the time to establish the ground rules and set clear goals for the end of their stay. It may seem insensitive to talk

about leaving before your child has even moved back in, but acknowledging this as a temporary arrangement will help them hold on to a sense of independence. If your child has a job, you should agree upfront on the amount they will contribute towards the household bills. If they are not working you could ask them to help in various ways, such as cleaning, shopping or tending the garden. Discuss how things will work if your child invites friends round, and which rooms are off-limits at those times. It may be less stressful if you restrict visits to certain days or hours. Finally – and most importantly – it’s vital to treat your child as the

adult they have become. In the years they have been living away from you, it’s likely they will have established a lifestyle that’s very different to the family life you shared together, so give them space and don’t be tempted to ‘parent’ them in the way you used to do. Whatever your child’s reason for returning home, it’s likely that this is just a phase, after which they will once again be able to lead an independent life. Handled carefully, this episode may even strengthen the bonds between you and your son or daughter, creating a tighter family unit that will go on providing mutual support far into the future. Inspire Your Wanderlust Thinking about booking a last-minute holiday? These books should help to inspire your wanderlust. (Or just transport you to distant climes while you’re lounging in your garden.) The Road to Little Dribbling – Bill Bryson In The Road to Little Dribbling, Bill Bryson sets out to explore Britain once again – 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island. Not only is it highly entertaining, but The Road to Little Dribbling is packed full of facts and wry observations. You’ll veer from rolling your eyes at Bryson’s ‘grumpy-old-manishness’ to vigorously nodding your head, to snorting with laughter, to booking a train ticket to explore a corner of this island you haven’t yet stumbled upon. The Bean Trees – Barbara Kingsolver Determined to avoid ending up like her Kentucky classmates – pregnant and married before she’s 18, Taylor buys a beaten up old car and a tank of petrol, and heads west. By the time her car breaks down in Arizona, she has a three-year-old Cherokee girl in tow. First published 30 years ago, The Bean Trees beautifully evokes the landscape and spirit of 1980s Southwestern America. Adventures of a Young

16

Naturalist – Sir David Attenborough In 1954, David Attenborough began his exploration of the world, seeking out rare animals for London Zoo and sharing his experiences with a captive TV audience back at home. Adventures of a Young Naturalist charts his adventures across Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay, from coming face-toface with Komodo dragons and giant armadillos to befriending a young male orangutan. Numerous photographs help to bring the tales to life. The Earth From The Air – Yann Arthus-Bertrand It’s been almost 20 years since Yann Arthus-Bertrand first set out to capture aerial photography of some of the most remote places on Earth. The result – The Earth From the Air – went on to sell more than 3 million copies. A new edition was released last year, which includes 100 stunning new photographs and commentary from the likes of Jane Goodall and Matthieu Ricard. Breathtaking.

The Art of Travel – Alain de Botton Alain de Botton explores the reasons why we travel and discusses how we can make the most of our experiences. He covers everything from holiday romances to hotel mini-bars. It’s a book about taking pleasure in our surroundings (however mundane) and taking the time to look, really look, at the world around us. Wanderlust: A Book Club Sampler from Simon & Schuster This travel-inspired sampler is only available as a free Kindle ebook. It includes excerpts from several novels, including An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais. Also included are the authors’ favourite travel-related memories and notes and tips for book clubs. Perfect for dipping into on a summer’s evening, Wanderlust may help you to find your next book and your next holiday destination.

Sweet Recipe Berry & Chocolate Pavlovas These divine individual pavlovas are ideal for a summer dessert. You can make the meringues in advance then layer with fruit and cream a couple of hours before serving.

Ingredients: • 4 large egg whites • 225g caster sugar • 1 tsp cornflour • 1tsp white wine vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 500g fresh strawberries • 200g fresh raspberries • 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve • 2 tsp lemon juice • 300ml double cream, softly whipped • 200g Greek yoghurt • Chocolate curls, to decorate

Makes 4 Ready in 2 hours

TIP The unfilled meringues will keep in a an airtight container for 3-4 days. 24

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1. Line

2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over.

2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a

clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue.

3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles.

4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open.

5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving about

8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream.

6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving.

Crab Parcels Makes 20

Ready in 40 minutes

These crisp filo pastry parcels with a crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.

• 1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked • 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 spring onions, finely chopped • 1 tbsp lime juice • Freshly-ground black pepper • 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip) • Vegetable oil for deep frying • 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Shredded spring onion, to garnish

Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper. Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel. Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion.

TIP Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.

Bringing A Pet Into Your Family by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk

Pets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.” All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time. The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for young children to handle.

You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs. Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll need to find the pet that’s right for you. Rescue centres are a good first port of call, as they should be able to tell you what age group a pet can live with, whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, it’s sensible to choose a breeder that’s registered with the Kennel Club, as they have to adhere to strict ethical and health criteria. Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future. If you’re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at ‘borrowing’ one for walks and play. It’s worth asking around

to see if any of your neighbours need some extra help. Or check out The Cinnamon Trust (www. cinnamon.org.uk), which puts volunteer dog walkers in touch with pet owners who need support. There’s also Borrow My Doggy (www.borrowmydoggy. com), which connects dog walkers and pet sitters with pet owners. Lots of animal rescues also need people to foster pets long or short term. Find out more www.pdsa.org.uk has an easy guide to choosing the right animal for your circumstances, and advice on a range of pets, from chickens to horses. www.rspca.org.uk has advice on everything from settling a new pet into a home to coping with any behaviour issues. www.dogstrust.org.uk has lots of downloadable factsheets, including a leaflet that helps parents to keep their children safe around dogs. www.thekennelclub.org.uk has advice about choosing a puppy and a list of all registered breeders.

Beauty Staying Safe In The Sun by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you… First up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours.

Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skinfriendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland &

Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for:
