Welcome Hi everyone, Well August is upon us again, is it just me or are the months racing by at break neck speed? The school holidays are now here and the kids are probably bored already, so why not check out this month’s events, you may find something to keep them entertained, for a email:michelle@fabfeethealthcare.co.uk little while at least. The bi-annual Aldington Soapbox Derby takes place this year on Bank Holiday Monday. It’s a great day out for the family, and the creative speed freaks among us are offered an adrenaline fueled race down Forge Hill, hoping that their Karts make it to the bottom in one piece - and the right way up! August has a number of high profile birthdays, Alexander Fleming b: 1881 Enid Blyton b: 1897, Mother Teresa b: 1910, and then there’s Madonna and Michael Jackson b:1958. Last but not least - ME! All gifts gratefully received, just kidding! Sadly August is also the month the world lost Elvis Presley in 1977, it was one of those shock announcements that ensures you never forget where you were at the time, much like Kennedy in 1963 - although I was much too young to remember that one! On a positive note, as one door closes another opens, my husband was born just eight days before the loss of Kennedy. He may not be famous and powerful but, like Mary Poppins, he’s practically perfect. So much so he’s known to those that love him as Peter Poppins or Peeps for short! Until next time, have a great month!

The Shadoxhurst Fete and Fun Dog Show is
now a well established annual event in the village of Shadoxhurst. It is organised by, and on behalf of, the 1st Shadoxhurst Scout Group which continues to expand in numbers of young people, leaders and helpers. There are now over 70 boys and girls and a regular count of 16 adult leaders and volunteers. DOG SHOW This year's Fun Dog Show attracted over 300 entries and the 130 dogs that registered also had the opportunity to take part in the Agility Ring that was put on by Ashford based Bone-AFide Behaviours. Many of the dog owners who attended have agreed that this is one of the best organised fun dog shows in the area, and many have returned year after year.
4
Agatha Polyblank with her dog, Olive, won the Young Handler class and Chloe Daniels' dog, Vito, who dressed as Dumbo, won the Fancy Dress class for the second year in a row. Best in Show was won by Freddy (mixed breed) handled by Glenys Thomas who was also first in Best Condition Veteran and Best Overall Condition. Fifi (Shih Tzu), handled by Samantha Payne was Reserve Best in Show and also first Best Condition Long-Coat, Prettiest Bitch and The Dog The Judge Would Most Like To Take Home.
VILLAGE FETE Other attractions on the day included horse and cart rides, provided by Ray and Caroline Dawkins, the return of ??? the llama, miniature ponies, bungie runs, catapult shooting and a tug-of war competition. KidZone proved to be a popular section of the fete for those with young children. Despite being unable to walk, Sarah Bradford, Shadoxhurst's Beaver leader, organised parents of Beavers and Cubs to provide a whole section of fun activities for children including a coconut shy and free face painting by Hannah, Rosie and Jade who worked hard all day to produce some extremely professional designs. Chair of the organising committee, Roland Cooper, said that more than ÂŁ3,000 was made on the day. "This year's show was the best we've organised and is well supported by people in Shadoxhurst and the surrounding villages" he said. "The money we've made is a stonking good profit for a village fete and any profits will be invested into scouting in the village, including improving the Scout HQ in the recreation field." Group Scout Leader, Brad, was also pleased with the day. "A lot of time and effort is put into the organisation of this event and I would like to thank all involved" he said. "As well as being a hugely successful fund-raising event for the Scout Group, we also provide an outlet for
village organisations and societies to advertise FOR ALL YOUR MOWING NEEDS themselves and raise their own money. All the Please Ring 07712 615 115 stallholders who profited on the day have kindly Following recent illness I am back and available for work. donated to the Scout Group". Brad joined The Deputy Mayor, Councillor George Koowaree, and The Deputy Mayoress, Gloria Champion, in sampling some of the local cider from the Beer Tent. The takings from the bar have kindly been fund-matched by Barclays Bank who have made a very generous donation of £1,000.00 to the Scout Group. JOIN IN THE FUN There are always opportunities for adults to join the Scout Group as helpers or leaders. You don’t need previous scouting experience (although this is always welcome) just an attitude to want the young people who come every week to get the best possible opportunities and experiences, and have the most fun, in the time that they spend with us. The group also has vacancies for boys and girls aged 5 to 18 in Beavers (waiting list), Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. If you feel that as an adult you might like to get involved in Scouting in Shadoxhurst, or if you have children who might like to experience some scouting activities come to the 1st Shadoxhurst Scout Group open day at the Scout Hut in the corner of the recreation field in Hornash Lane, Shadoxhurst on Saturday, July 11th.

Tropical Paradise by Pippa Greenwood
6
Have you missed out on a summer holiday again this year, or do you still think longingly of that fabulous tropical trip you had a few years back? This time of year, as the summer’s end is not too far away, is when so many of us wish for that exotic holiday we never quite had! So why not try to recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead? The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing …..and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip. A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of
Ashwoods • Tree Surgery • Stump Removal
the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise. Keep plants well watered and fed and they should be full of vigour too. Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Ok, so it won’t yield a crop of bananas but it’ll provide a tropical look and a good deal of comment too. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves. If you want more than just foliage (and who doesn’t?) then you might like the idea of some tropical effect flowers added in to the mix. If so, try
the bulbous Eucomis bicolour with out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant.

the garden Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features whether living – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. It is well worth checking what is available in local garden centres and junk shops or maybe even the local council recycling centre. Even if you go to the garden centre, statues and garden ornaments are very variable in price and there are now many available which are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle like atmosphere you are creating. It is always worth visiting local nurseries and garden centres for more ideas and to find your own personal favourite tropical-effect plants to add
to the mix. There are plenty to choose from and other plants to consider could include : tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads (again great in a pot), citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) which are not always reliably hardy but can be used throughout the summer and then overwintered in a suitable greenhouse, conservatory or window sill and bamboos (including the dramatic black-
stemmed ‘nigra’, Filipendula rubra, Ligularia, gloriosa lily and Fatsia japonica). So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and maybe, just maybe a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray! “A Great British Success Story” How Harvey Bowden rose from humble plumber to establishing the UK’s most popular water softener company... Harvey was born and raised in Cornwall – an area renowned for it’s soft water. So when he moved with his family to Surrey 40 years ago, it wasn’t long before they noticed a problem. Harvey’s wife Ann noticed how hard the water was and how much more time she was spending cleaning lime scale from sinks, taps and baths. The increased cost of soaps and detergents to deal with hard water also came as quite a surprise. After mentioning the problem one day to her neighbour, she learned her neighbour had something called a ‘water softener’ installed, which eliminated these problems. Ann decided that she wanted one and so spent her own money to buy it. Harvey recalls “I was a plumber and thought it extravagant but when I installed it I couldn’t believe how good it was. So I started recommending them to my customers”. In the beginning... Impressed with his customer’s feedback, Harvey formed Surrey Softeners Ltd in 1978 and began supplying and installing Permutit softeners. Before long, he became the biggest ever Permutit water softener seller, installer and dealer. A few short years later in 1981, Harvey opened his first factory on Hipley Street in Old Woking and Harvey Water Softeners was born. Production began on a twin cylinder non-electric undersink water softener which he had developed from his experience fitting and installing softeners. Harvey improved his water softener by creating small blocks of salt to replace the old fashioned tablets, and continually works on making sure his softeners are the smallest and most efficient on the market.
The popularity of his softeners grew, allowing Harvey to build the business together with his family until it became the largest and most successful water softener company in the UK and instigated the development of the market. And today… Harvey Water Softeners are proud to be the largest manufacturer of domestic water softeners in the UK. With over 100 staff and over 200,000 happy customers, Harvey’s vision of a water softener in every home in the UK grows nearer. “Every home in the UK would benefit from a water softener because the water is hard. Hard water is unnecessary. If it makes sense for one person, then it makes sense for everybody. We all use water every day and hard water does not do any job nearly as well as softened water does”. When asked what his favourite benefit of soft water is, he happily replies “Showering and shaving in softened water is the thing I enjoy the most. The pure joy of clean water and the occasional wallow in a deep bath with real soap bubbles is wonderful. Also my skin doesn’t itch.” Although Harvey is now semi-retired and the day to day running of the business is in the capable hands of his son Casey, when he isn’t enjoying one of his many hobbies including vintage motorcycles and sailing he can still be found at the factory talking to his customers, assisting his staff or working on his next big idea. Home & Interiors Victorian Style
By Katherine Sorrell found in the modern home. Fabrics, too, were rather more elaborate than we are used to today, with a great deal of embellishments – though William Morris’s Arts & Crafts designs introduced a relative simplicity and have remained popular ever since.
18 It may not be the height of
fashion, but there is much to be said for Victorian style, which is confident, distinctive and eminently comfortable, says Katherine Sorrell Everything changed in the 19th century. From society to science, politics to industry, the Victorian era was a time of enormous transformation. Travel, too, became easier, and influences and ideas from all around the world became increasingly important. The middle classes expanded rapidly, and their homes became the perfect vehicles with which to show off both their newly acquired wealth and their cultural savvy. The result? An interior style that was exuberant, eclectic and, quite often, downright over the top. The high Victorian style was a riot of revivalism, and different periods were mixed with abandon, including Elizabethan, Italianate, ‘Louis’, Egyptian and
Queen Anne Revival. The main ‘Battle of the Styles’, however, was between ‘Greek’, (in other words, pretty much all types of classical architecture and decoration), and ‘Gothic’ (more or less any style reminiscent of Olde Englande). Gothic was the winner, its most famous exponent Augustus Pugin, designer of the refurbished Palace of Westminster. Despite its mix and match of styles, and a tendency towards clutter, the main ingredients for Victorian living were not so far from where we are today, give or take a tweak or two in colour and pattern. Encaustic tiled hallways and polished, dark wood floors with a central rug featuring large, bold patterns set the scene, while patterned wallpaper was de rigueur. Wooden furniture was dark, solid and often very, very large – but we would recognise much of it, from dressers and dining tables to sideboards and writing desks, though whatnots and chiffoniers are rarely to be
Upholstered seating was the major development from the preceding Georgian era. Coil springing had been invented in the 1820s, and Victorian sofas and chairs featured deep buttons and comfortable, curving shapes. Also new to furniture-making was Thonet’s technique for bending beechwood to produce his nowclassic café chairs, while metal bedsteads were introduced to Britons at the Great Exhibition of 1851 – and have changed little in style ever since. As far as colour choices went, the Victorians loved anything rich, deep and vivid. These hues worked well with the dark brown furniture that predominated, but are best used judiciously today. That said, they can be most attractive in the right place: deep shades, such as crimson, claret, bottle green, sharp yellow, purple, mahogany, terracotta and Prussian blue, were preferred for sitting rooms, dining rooms and studies; paler and fresher hues, including pink, grey, pale blue and soft green, were considered to be more suitable for bedrooms. Lighting has, of course, altered a great deal in the last 150 years or so. When Victoria came to the throne, oil and candle lamps were the only form of lighting in most homes, but during her reign first gas lighting was developed and then, at the very end of the 19th century, early electricity. There
were a great many elaborate and ornamental styles of lamp, including swan-necked brass wall lights, flower-shaped glass shades and china lamps covered with floral sprigs. Originals – which can often be converted to electricity – are often to be found today, as are all sorts of reproductions. The Victorian middle-class kitchen, used only by servants, was a very plain room, equipped with free-standing tables, with the sink in an adjacent scullery. And the bathroom only came into being as a separate room in the 1870s, before which time all ablutions took place in the bedroom, using a wooden washstand plus bowl and pitcher, or a tin bath in front of the fire. Along with indoor bathrooms came distinctive sanitaryware – large, often colourfully decorated basins, and enamelled roll-top baths on ball and claw or scroll feet, much of which can be found in reproduction form for those
with spacious enough rooms.
the home
Because Victorians considered bare rooms to be in poor taste, their houses were filled with more knick knacks, objets d’art and collections than ever before or since, some of which are right on-trend today – embroidered samplers or miniature flowers under a glass dome, anyone? Other Victorian accessories have not stood the test of time quite so well, including black and white miniature portraits, colonial exotica and toby jugs. Nor has a helpful kitchen accessory, employed for anyone unlucky enough to suffer from cockroaches – a hedgehog kept in a box.. Cake and Bake Caramel Apple Sponge Bake This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche. 22
Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve
Makes 9 squares Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper. 2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel. 3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set). 4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. 5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.
TIP
Replace the apple slices with peeled and sliced pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert.

Veggie Bean Burgers Makes 8
Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling
Packed with flavour these burgers will be enjoyed by both meat-eaters and vegetarians. For a lovely nutty texture replace the sweetcorn with 100g chopped walnuts. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chopped onion over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, spring onions and carrots and fry, stirring, for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder. Tip all the beans into a large bowl and roughly mash with a fork. Stir in the onion mixture along with the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil
Divide and shape the mixture into 8 burgers. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
• 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
Heat the rest of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown (you may need to do this in two batches so add a little more oil, if needed). Drain on kitchen paper then serve in toasted burgers buns with spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes.
• 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 1 carrot, peeled and grated • 2 tsp chilli powder • 2 x 400g cans mixed bean salad, drained and rinsed • 100g canned sweetcorn, drained • 100g fresh breadcrumbs • 1 large egg • 1 tbsp lime juice • 4 tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or parsley) • Toasted burger buns, baby spinach leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve
Tip
The uncooked burgers freeze well, just place on a lined baking tray and freeze until solid then pack away into freezer bags. To cook from frozen, place the burgers on a lined baking tray, brush lightly with oil and bake for 25-30 minutes at 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6 until golden and piping hot.

Woodchurch Village Life Museum Goal Running Re-enactment Saturday August 22 Woodchurch Village Life Museum is organising a re-enactment of goal running. This was originally an 18th century game enjoyed by teams of grown men or women. It was last seen here in Kent about 60 years ago. On summer Saturdays it was a common thing in mid-Kent villages around Ashford, in the Faversham area and across the Marsh. There are photographs of teams in pubs and of the 1921 winning team from Woodchurch in the museum and village hall. Woodchurch Museum also has the original flag of the Woodchurch Goal Running Club. Inter-village rivalry ensured that these matches were lively affairs. Even families had teams in the days when families were larger than nowadays. Surprisingly no ball is involved nor a goal as in soccer or rugby; just a few marker posts were needed. The game resembles ‘tag’ that you may have played in your school days and of course involves a lot of running. Usually thirsty players gathered in the local pub afterwards. That social part of the day was very important. On Saturday August 22, we will have a beer tent. The plan is to invite men to volunteer to form teams to play a variation of the game. So there should be an opportunity for you to join in if you wish. We will use the field next to the museum on Susans Hill in Woodchurch (TN26 3RE), after the harvest is in. The fun is planned to start at noon on Saturday 22nd August. Besides the goal running re-enactment, there will be other attractions such as an organised games area for children, a ‘Fun Dog Show’, tombola and a raffle. Drinks and refreshments will be on sale. Entry is free but donations are welcome. There will be ample free parking. We hope to see your whole family there. Go to www.woodchurchmuseum.com for details

health & Lifestyle London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge Cyclists can take life by the handle bars on Sunday 13th September and enjoy a stunning 65 or 80 mile cycle ride from London’s Greenwich Park to Canterbury, Kent. The UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, The Children’s Trust, are appealing for cyclists of all abilities to take part. Kim Derry, Events Manager for the event, tells us “the ride really is open to anyone. We have cyclists of all shapes and sizes, male and female, and of all ages, from 16 to 60! By signing up now, everyone has enough time to train, whether you’re a seasoned rider, or still need to go out and get yourself a bike”.
32
Riders meet at The Pavilion Café in Greenwich Park between 8 and 9am, where hot and cold breakfasts will be available. The route, planned and provided by professional Cycling Support Services, has been carefully thought out and is both well signposted and marshalled, with regular refreshment stops. Riders will explore the beautiful Kent countryside including the historic Pilgrim’s Way, before crossing the finish line to a much welcomed sports massage, along with a post-ride party, where friends and family are encouraged to join in the fun.
“The ride is just fantastic, and we’ve had some really amazing feedback from previous years. A lot of riders we see returning each year which is great testimony for us. We always encourage feedback, which means we are able to make continuous improvements to the event. This year stands to be the biggest one yet, and we are aiming for between 3 and 400 hundred sign ups”. For those coming from the Kent area, a coach is available to take cyclists up from Canterbury to the start line in Greenwich Park, a space of which can be booked via The Children’s Trust website. “This year we are working hard to create a great after party and we really encourage friends and family to meet their cycling heroes to celebrate. We’ll have amazing balloon creations, face painting for the children, music, stands & stalls, and a great selection of food including a BBQ, and an on-site café catering for healthier options”. Why not become part of The Children’s Trust’s biggest cycle event and sign up now? For more information and to take advantage of the earlybird sign up offer, visit www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk/ londontocanterbury or telephone 01737 364323.

Is It Time You Saw The Light? by Kate McLelland
34
For many years I put off going for an eye test. It wasn’t because I was vain - quite the opposite, in fact - it’s just that I couldn’t stand the idea of having to walk around with a pair of glasses round my neck, constantly putting them on and off every time I wanted to read something. And that’s just in the home. I quailed even more at the prospect of having to whip out my spectacles every time I needed to look at my mobile phone in the street, read a menu in a restaurant or check prices at the supermarket. In spite of my antipathy to wearing glasses, I was becoming aware that my eyesight wasn’t as sharp as it had been. More and more often I found myself moving to the nearest light source in order to be able to read small type more clearly. It was a nuisance, but I kept telling myself that the light conditions were to blame, rather than my vision. The crunch came one Sunday when my husband and I arrived back late from a long and exhausting day out. Earlier in the week I had bought a couple of microwave ready meals,
anticipating that we would want to eat as soon as we got in. As I hung up my coat my husband helpfully got the packets out of the fridge. I returned to the kitchen just in time to see him throwing them into the bin. “Why are you doing that?!” “They were three days out of date. Didn’t you check them?” The worst thing about this – apart from the fact that we ended up having to make do with cheese on toast – was that I had checked the use-by date. It’s just that my blurred vision had interpreted the 15th of the month as the 18th. The time for excuses was over: I had to admit that I needed help. As I chatted to the optician during my first ever eye test I discovered that age-related vision loss can start around the age of forty, when the lens inside the eye begins to harden, causing problems with focus. Many people compensate for this by holding reading material further away, but eventually the condition, known as presbyopia, will become more advanced, requiring glasses (or in some cases, corrective surgery). As we grow older a number of
subtle changes occur in our eyes, including a reduction in pupil size that occurs when the muscles that control the eye’s reaction to light become weaker (this is the reason why older people need more ambient light when reading). This condition also means the eye is less able to adapt rapidly from dark to light and it is therefore easier to become dazzled by bright lights. Another risk to older drivers is a reduction in the ability to perceive images at the limits of the natural field of vision. This area narrows down by up to three degrees in each decade of life and by the time you reach your 70s and 80s you may have lost as much as 20-30 degrees of peripheral vision. Decreased perception of colour, floating spots and flashes of light can also be experienced as a natural part of the aging process, but it’s worth visiting an optician if you are seeing spots and light flashes regularly, as this may be a symptom of a retina that is becoming detached. Routine eye examinations can also pick up cataracts (these can be easily and safely corrected by surgery), age-related macular
health & Lifestyle degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy (which, as the name suggests, is a condition suffered mainly by long-term diabetics). Generally speaking, it’s time to visit the optician if you’ve experienced any of the following: • Colours seem washed out • You’re finding it hard to judge the depth of unfamiliar steps • Straight lines appear wobbly • You’re finding it more difficult to read • Road signs seem less distinct and harder to read while driving If you’re aged 60 or over you are already entitled to a free NHS sight test. If you are younger you may still qualify: visit www.nhs. uk to find out more.
Oshens HairBoutique 100 Bridge Street, Wye Formerly Taylor Martin Hair
When I finally visited my local optician I was surprised to discover just how thorough the eye examination was. I was asked questions about my general health and given tests for eye balance and pressure as well as being asked to asked to read the optician’s chart. Nowadays an optician can create a tailor-made solution that works for your specific eyesight problems, and it doesn’t always involve glasses. Many people don’t realise that contact lenses aren’t just for short-sightedness – they can be worn to help with presbyopia. But if you do choose glasses, multifocals mean that you don’t necessarily need to keep taking them on and off.
sight of my new, bespectacled self, although I’m still struggling a bit when it comes to remembering to take my glasses out with me. But one thing I can’t deny is that my new glasses are invaluable when it comes to reading those annoying sell-by dates!
Having worn glasses for several weeks now, I’ve now become used to catching

Kent Golfers Invited to Become a 59Club Mystery Secret Agent Golfers in Kent are being offered the chance to go undercover to analyse the good, the bad and the ugly in the golf industry from a customer service point of view. Players are being invited to step forward and assist 59Club in assessing the customer experience at golf venues in the region. If you visit a golf club and have a great experience – or, conversely, an awful time – you may not ever say anything to the club concerned. So how do golf clubs and resorts gauge their performance for members and visitors, or compare themselves with their competition?
36
Well, in short, many of them follow the tried and tested examples of the big retailers and restaurant chains: they utilise a mystery shopper service. This involves a ‘tester’ visiting the club as an anonymous punter and reporting back on every aspect. The ‘test’ process analyses both the customer’s experience during 18 holes of golf as well as the service and food quality in the club house bar before and after the round. This is a great opportunity for avid golfers to not only enjoy the fruits of their labour, but in doing so, they take on a valuable role in reporting back on their findings to assist 59Club and the golf community with the aim of improving the customer experience. Simon Wordsworth, a fellow of the PGA and chief executive of 59Club, Europe’s leading golf-specific mystery shopper service, offered a brief overview of what the process involves and the people who carry it out. “We recruit testers in all regions and, if they fit the criteria we’re looking for, we arrange for them to visit selected venues within the 59Club
test programme to provide a comprehensive report on the golf club,” he explained. “The tester may be required to analyse all areas, from the design and quality of the golf course and practice facilities, to golf-relevant services and the food and beverage experience. “If in-depth evaluations are desired, the assessment may encompass the complete experience, starting with a first call or contact and resulting in a stay-over of several days or even a half-year membership. It all depends on how in-depth the club wants to look at itself. “Some of the larger resorts want absolutely every aspect covered while smaller clubs may require the golf course and clubhouse analysed. The data is extremely in-depth at whatever level.” Wordsworth continued: “Our testers are experienced and diligent golfers, men and women, with a knowledge of – and an eye for – what makes a good, or bad, golfing experience. The visits are carried out by golfers with handicaps ranging from scratch to 25, with testing opportunities available all year round. “The recruitment process for these golfers is thorough as we need to ensure they are reliable and conscientious, have an eye for detail, a passion for good service, and a positive, constructive way of communicating quality feedback. We currently have a test team made up of people from all walks of life, from managing directors and business owners to university students. “It is important that all testers have experienced various levels of customer service, from playing at an array of golf clubs over the years, so they are armed with the ability to identify and differentiate between good and bad service.
“The quality of feedback and personal observations based on staff, facility and service is extremely important, as all of our clubs tested rely on the detailed analysis we supply to ensure they maintain the highest possible standards.” College lecturer “Gary”, 41, has been a tester with 59Club for nearly two years and the 16-handicapper has visited more than a dozen venues in that time. “It’s a great initiative to be involved with, especially as I previously used to critique each golfing experience” he smiled. “I always analysed every aspect of the day and would recognise a really well maintained course or be the first to say if the service was dreadful. “Now I can put those observations to a constructive use, as the clubs tested are privy to my observations which are recorded in accordance with strict 59Club marking guidelines. They help keep me on track and ensure my feedback is non-subjective. “My playing partners now actively provide me with their own feedback which I can quantify before including it in my report. Two friends have even asked if they could become testers themselves, and I was delighted to refer them to 59Club. We have all got the testing ‘bug’ and fully appreciate the long-term difference we can make to the experience of future golfers at a club. “It’s also an ideal way for me, as a keen golfer with a young family, to enjoy my golf without worrying that it’s costing me money. I get reimbursed, 59Club gets an in-depth report, the golf club benefits from the extensive feedback and future golfers reap the rewards of the improvements driven by the comments.” Visit www.59club.com to view the current portfolio of clubs you can be selected to test and to register your interest in becoming a 59Club mystery tester today…

Hooray for Hollywood! Summer is the time for the great cinematic blockbuster, but there are days when it’s way too nice to be stuck in a dark movie theatre. Why not get out the deckchair and read the book before seeing the film after dark? Seeing how some of these great novels paved the way for Hollywood, it’s no wonder they’ve made millions for the studios.
38
Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton We’ve just taken an ill-fated trip to Jurassic World this summer, but why not read the original and best? Michael Crichton wrote his cautionary tale about what happens when scientists mess around with dino DNA way back in 1990, and the subsequent film made millions of children around the world believe that dinosaurs could roam the earth again. Throw in some Chaos Theory and some moral and ethical questions and you’re left with one extraordinary book that’s full of suspense, and opportunities to roll your eyes and weep for the future. Jaws - Peter Benchley This isn’t perhaps what you’d call ideal beach reading, but the suspense that Peter Benchley created in his 1974 novel of a great white shark terrorising a seaside resort is absolutely compelling. Focusing on the stories of the three men who are tasked with hunting and killing the killer shark, it’s tense, intense and a real nail-biter. ‘Jaws’ was a huge success, despite coming under attack from literary critics. It’s no Moby Dick, but it’s the very definition of a page-turner and you’ll be devouring the story, much like a giant man-eating fish devours surfers. The Firm - John Grisham Grisham’s second novel was a hit of stratospheric proportions, so it was no surprise that Hollywood soon came a-knocking. Mitch McDeere is a hotshot lawyer in the making, but the Harvard graduate turns down offers from major firms in New York and Chicago to work for
Bendini, Lambert and Locke based in Memphis. They offer him a deal he can’t refuse but it soon becomes apparent that it may have cost him a lot more than he anticipated. No one ever seems to leave ‘The Firm’, or least, no one seems to leave the firm alive. Gritty and gripping it will at least ensure that you read your contract through carefully in future. Lord of the Rings - J R R Tolkien Most wondered how on earth (or rather, how on Middle Earth) Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel could possibly be turned into a movie. Turns out, it was made into three. A sequel to ‘The Hobbit’, the novel expanded exponentially, and remains one of the best sellers of all time. The Dark Lord Sauron has created a ring to rule over all the other Rings of Power and bring him to reign over the whole of Middle Earth. What he hasn’t counted on is complications caused by a group of hobbits, along with some elves, and a wizard known as Gandalf. Complex and intricate it’s great to get lost in Tolkien’s world. If you can’t get to grips with it, you can always use it as a doorstop. Psycho - Robert Bloch In 1959, Robert Bloch wrote a book that would make us all morbidly fearful of so-called ‘Mummy’s Boys’. Inspired by a real life murder case in Wisconsin, the novel was quickly snatched up by Hollywood, and Hitchcock brought the story of seriously disturbed Norman Bates to the silver screen. Middle-aged Norman runs the Bates Motel along with his domineering mother. Unwitting guest Mary
Crane arrives at the motel, on the run having stolen $400,000 from her boss so she can marry her boyfriend and pay off his debts. But Norman’s momma is still running the show, and she’s not too happy about Mary’s arrival. It will, most definitely, all end in tears. Disturbing and harrowing, if he still lives with his mum when you meet him, then run like the wind. The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins The most recent of the novelsto-film franchises is the story of Katniss Everdeen and her rise to fame in her District as two-time victor of the Hunger Games. What Hollywood likes more than one blockbuster movie, is three blockbuster movies…even four, as the third instalment has been split into two films. The books are gruesome and, though chances are you’ve already seen at least the first film, the novels go into excruciating detail of the bizarre world the teenagers, forced to fight to the death, have to endure. The third instalment in particular is pretty nasty. Read it with your feet up and a nice drink in hand, and try not to focus on the fact that it’s kids killing kids.
Help to Change a Child’s Life Beanstalk is a national charity which recruits and trains volunteers to give individual help to children aged 5 – 11 years who find reading difficult and need some extra oneto-one support. If you could spare 3 hours each week during school term time, enjoy reading and have plenty of patience, you could help a child discover the pleasure of books. No experience is necessary as training, support and resources will be provided. Volunteers are needed in this area now. By helping a child become a confident reader, you can change that child’s life chances
