Plumbing & Heating Services

Welcome Hi everyone, As I write this August introduction I realise that these days of sitting on the patio plus outdoor living and socialising are numbered! It seems as though I’ve only just got into the swing of summer and now autumn is waiting in the wings. Who knows we may have an Indian Summer, but just to be on the safe side I aim to make the most of every little bit of fine weather this month. Even as I write, I’m sitting on the patio, keeping a watchful eye out for the odd shower that is predicted for today. If I have to work on a Sunday then I plan to make it as pleasurable as I possibly can!

Hedges/ Borders Following the last edition a reader commented on how close deadline time can be to the delivery of certain magazines. Unfortunately delivery dates vary depending on where the first Monday of the month falls, but the deadline date is kept the same in order to be easily remembered for any of the magazines. The 1st of the month will ensure you don’t miss any one of the eight magazines. They usually go to print during the first two weeks of the month, so if you think you may have missed the deadline it’s still worth giving me a call, it may not be too late, I will always attempt to include last minute content. Garden Shed

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood

4

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them

with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

New Pet Grooming Service Launches in Westwell Leacon Dogs and cats can expect a warm welcome at Groomingdales, a new pet parlour near Ashford. Qualified pet groomer Jo Smith has opened the business at her home in Westwell Leacon, where the emphasis is on every individual animal’s wellbeing. From the moment the pet and their owner arrive, right through to the finishing touches, Jo makes everyone feel a part of the family at Groomingdales. After completing her training, Jo created a stylish and fully equipped facility in her garden, where pets can be treated in a quiet and tranquil environment. Every dog comes in through the front door of Jo’s cottage, where they have the chance to meet the two small family dogs, Jack and Lily, before heading out to the parlour for their unhurried treatment.

8

“When I’ve taken my own dogs to groomers, I’ve often found the environment to be very sterile and there has been a ‘quick in and out’ approach,” Jo says. “But my approach is very individual – I like the animals to be completely relaxed and stress-free. There aren’t crates full of dogs waiting to be treated; I deal with one dog or cat at a time and I’ll take breaks in the treatment to let them relax if need be. Also, while some groomers will do whatever the owner has asked in terms of cutting or colouring, I’ll only do what’s right for the pet – if they become too stressed, I won’t continue.” Services on offer at Groomingdales include a bath and blow dry, creative grooming such as colouring, nail trimming and a full groom. Jo also offers a new specialist paw treatment, during which paws are massaged with a moisturising butter cream. “People don’t realise how dry and damaged paws can become whilst walking through mud and water,” Jo says. “This treatment leaves paws really soft and nourished.” Jo also offers free puppy socialisation – any puppy under six months old can be brought along to Groomingdales to ‘sit in’ on a treatment session, even if the owner has not brought another dog for grooming. “The puppies can be brushed, to get them used to grooming or simply play in the room while I’m treating someone else’s dog,” Jo says. “It helps them to get used to the environment and being around other dogs.” To celebrate the launch of Groomingdales, Jo is offering a 10% discount on the first treatment for new customers – simply quote ‘Village Directory’ when booking. To book contact Jo on 07974 791907. You can also follow her on Twitter @GroomingdalesJo and find Groomingdales on Facebook.

Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space

By Katherine Sorrell

When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one.

10

Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way. Calligaris Quadro white lacquered bar table, £111; Calligaris Olivia solid wood folding chairs in wenge or beech, £80 each; all Lime Modern Living, 01892 512611; www.limemodernliving.co.uk.

By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish. Loft bed by Oliver Furniture, £995, Nubie, 01825 724160; www.nubie.co.uk.

Puzzle Time

Adam Jacot de Boinod was a researcher for the television series QI and is the author of The Meaning of Tingo and Other Extraordinary Words from around the World, published by Penguin Books. Having researched the rural dialect of Kent collected so lovingly by Victorian lexicographers, he has set us a “Call-My-Bluff Quiz”. Can you guess the right answers for the definitions of the following words from Kent:

Hobbies Why the Sewing Bee is Buzzing Louder Than Ever more difficult to locate a suitable class: www.thesewingdirectory. co.uk has a list of local classes and sewing groups which you can search by county.

14

Perhaps it’s all part of the cult of nostalgia we’re experiencing at the moment, including shabby chic, home baking and handmade household accessories. Sewing is suddenly cool again, and that vintage Singer sewing machine that your mother banished to the garage all those years ago has recently returned to reclaim its place as a must-have item in UK homes. With TV programmes such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” commanding audiences of 2.7 million, it’s clear that sewing has once again captured the public’s imagination. Of course, the recent climate of austerity has played its part in this revival. Although shops selling ultra-cheap, disposable fashion have flooded the market with low quality, massproduced garments for many years now, customers are slowly beginning to realise that cut-price fashion can be a false economy. Making your own clothing is the answer to all those concerns about quality and durability, plus there’s no better way to express your personality than to source your own fabrics, creating a

fashion look that is unique to you. The old-style sewing machines mentioned at the beginning of this article are available to buy on Ebay, with prices ranging from £40 to £200 (for models incorporating a table). Alternatively you can purchase a new machine starting from around £200. As it’s difficult to predict exactly what you’ll want to make in the future, it’s best to start off with a brand that provides a basic model to which you can add accessories (allowing you to create ornate stitching or overlocking) over time. When you’ve bought your machine the next step will be to get hold of a simple pattern and some fabric. Purchasing fabric can be expensive and as you stand there, with your brand new sewing shears poised for action, you may wish that you had someone on hand to guide you through your first attempt at making up a garment. It’s always sensible to seek expert advice and in larger UK cities you’ll find plenty of courses available, priced from around £40 upwards. However, if you live in a rural area you may find it

Sewing classes are a great place to pick up valuable tips, but not everyone can afford to pay for lessons and sometimes learning at home is the only option. If you can’t get away you can always explore the many helpful, explanatory blogs and ‘how to’ videos for the beginner available on the internet, as these don’t cost anything and are almost as good as face-to-face tuition. One such blog can be found at www. tillyandthebuttons.com, with well illustrated, step-by-step tutorials on everything from ‘setting up your sewing machine’ to ‘inserting a jacket sleeve’. Once you’ve mastered some simple techniques you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress. You’ll find that you save literally hundreds of pounds over time when you are no longer buying clothes at high street prices and parents will particularly appreciate the economic benefits of making outfits for their children. The sewing revival may have been driven by nostalgia for the ‘good old days’, but it’s underpinned by the growing realisation that skills in tailoring and making can be of real value to cash-strapped families today. Cake and Bake Dutch Apple Pie The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of self-raising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples ples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery. 16

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •

200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve

TIP Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.

Serves 8

1. To make the pastry, sift the plain and self- raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

9 Answers: Tinkaboo’s favourite food is biscuits. There are 5 jugs in Dolly’s kitchen.

Especially for you Tinkaboo!

1. Mix in all of the fluid ingredients, oil, water, eggs and honey, with the rolled oats. 2. Mash the bananas with a fork, then add to the mix. 3. Add 2 cups of flour, mix with a spoon then slowly add the rest of the flour (you may need more if it’s too wet and sloppy) 4. Once you are happy with the mix, tip it onto a floured surface and roll until 1/4 of an inch thick, thicker if you want a softer centre. 5. Cut out in your favourite shapes, put onto trays lined with greese proof paper. 6. Bake at a low to medium temperature, no higher, until golden. (Approx an hour) 7. Allow to cool, if you want to decorate, buy yogurt drops (available online or hobby craft stores), melt in a bain-marie and dip or drizzle over the squiss-kits. 8. Allow to set, they do not need to go in the fridge. Store in a cake tin or cookie jar.

essentiallyhops Decorative Hop Garlands are the most beautiful natural garlands, picked fresh from the field at the end of August and hung in the home where they dry naturally to give all year round decoration. Ideal over fireplaces and agas, or on beams, over doorways, windows or on dressers, the traditional Kentish hop garland is highly sought after and now not as widely available as they used to be. Tractors run up and down from the hop gardens every day during the hop harvest to bring the freshly picked hops to the shop for customers to choose from. The hop harvest starts around 20th august until 15th September but you can buy the dried garlands all year round.

If I shake the bottle it makes a fantastic splashy sound! But why 24 is the water pink? And why does it sink to the bottom of the bottle? Children are naturally curious and in the “outstanding” Nursery at Ashford Prep School every opportunity is given to every child to discover “why”. They think they are having a great time splashing, listening, shaking, seeing – but staff know they are in fact learning skills for life. Ashford Prep School Early Years department has been visited twice in the last year by inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate and each time they found it to be outstanding in every category. Here are just two of the comments they made: “Every opportunity is taken to awaken children’s curiosity and stimulate enquiry; for example the under threes experimented with musical instruments to see what sounds they could make and the over-threes weighed and mixed ingredients to make pancakes.”

“It is an extremely well-resourced, stimulating environment and full use is made of the outdoor space. Children are very well prepared for the next stage of their learning.” Ashford Prep School Nursery looks after children from age three until they start school in the term after their fourth birthday. They love wearing a uniform and being part of the prep school. They spend time with the older children and benefit from all the facilities of an equally outstanding prep school, including the chance to take swimming lessons in the school’s pool. Set in the green countryside of Great Chart, just a couple of miles from the international station, the Nursery is a beautiful setting in which children play, learn and develop under the guidance of caring and well-qualified staff. Whether it’s sports day, trying out musical instruments or discovering what’s lurking under that leaf in the garden, every day is an adventure at Ashford Prep School Nursery. Come and see for yourself. Come and meet our Head of Nursery Sue Yeates and the team by calling our Registrar Mrs Jenny Garrard on 01233 625171.

Beauty Perfect Nails

By Helen Taylor between coats. When you leave the salon your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat.

30

You spend a lot of time and money on your hair, your skin and your makeup. But are you letting your image down by not giving the same attention to your nails? It’s worth establishing a hand and nail care routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken a look at three of the most recent - and popular - nail services.

CND Shellac Nails Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudge-proof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp

There is no ‘infill’ option – even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again.

Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you, offering a vast choice of designs in showstopping colours, patterns and prints. Minx ‘foils’ work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. While still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-

day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days. Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off.

Long lasting Nail polish There are several reasons you might still opt for traditional nail polish. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option. And the choice of colours is much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux), so whilst it won’t be as instantly ‘set’ as Shellac or Minx, your finger and toenails will be complete dry and hard within a couple of hours.

Planning Your Estate? Don’t Leave it Too Late There’s a natural reluctance for younger people to think about death and getting older. It’s a fast-paced world we live in and thinking about the future is often put on the back burner. After all, talk of wills, inheritance tax (IHT) and estate planning seems far removed from your day-to-day life. But they are a vital part of financial planning and wealth preservation. Getting your affairs in order could save you and your family a great deal of money and heartache. Have you thought what would happen if the unspeakable was to happen and you died tomorrow? Have you, for instance, got sufficient life cover in place to take care of the loved-ones you leave behind?

32

But that’s not the only reason to take out life insurance. Many younger people are income rich and capital poor. Yet buying extra life insurance, beyond the amount that covers the mortgage, could provide a legacy for your heirs to fall back on. Life insurance also enables you to donate money to charity via your estate, while ensuring that your chosen heirs do not lose out. You can take out life cover equal to the amount you are going to donate, and this is paid to your chosen beneficiaries – again free of IHT. If you have excess income you could also consider gifting away some surplus income to avoid a potential IHT liability. After all, it makes sense to prevent an IHT liability before one is triggered and if income, which you don’t need, is gifted into a trust, it falls outside of your estate for IHT purposes. A core part of any estate planning is making sure that you have an up-to-date will in place. If you are a parent have you named a guardian in the event of your death? If you think your mother or sister will automatically receive custody of your child (or children) you are mistaken. Also, have you ever considered what would happen if you were affected by serious illness, disability or mental impairment in the future? It is not just your own estate affairs that you need to consider. If you are expecting to inherit

large sums of money it is worth checking that your parents or grandparents affairs are set up to mitigate as much IHT as possible as wealth is passed down through the generations. Some level of IHT may be unavoidable but there are ways to ensure that you are covered for any IHT liability that comes your way. Parents, for instance, could take out a whole-of-life assurance policy. The policy can be transferred to the beneficiary, say a son or daughter, who then pays all future contributions on their parents’ behalf. When the plan pays out, they will have a sum of money to pay the IHT liability. Talk of estate planning is not the cheeriest of subjects and it is easy to put something off that doesn’t affect you today, or even in the near future. But it is a vital part of financial planning and once dealt with you can rest easy that the loved ones you leave behind will be looked after. Seeking advice about divorce and separation. In the latest in a regular series on legal matters, Laura Hails, Head of the Family Department at Pengelly & Rylands, talks about divorce. It is widely recognised that following the breakdown of a relationship, those first decisions you make can greatly affect how you finalise your separation. Every family’s circumstances are different and you may need to think through the options with professional advice and guidance to make wise choices for your future, and that of your family. Seeking sound legal advice at this point, could be the best decision you ever make. We appreciate that solicitors can have a reputation for being expensive! And we know that, especially during difficult economic times, costs are a major factor when instructing solicitors. We are here to advise you of all the different options available to you, so you don’t

Laura Hails – Chartered Legal Executive spend more than you need to on legal fees. We provide a fixed fee divorce service which covers all steps from your initial instructions through to your Decree Absolute. Any other work we undertake in respect of the financial aspects of your divorce, or non-related divorce matters, are charged at an hourly rate, and we can discuss with you, at your first appointment, the most suitable way forward for you, in light of your individual circumstances. If you do not wish to instruct solicitors to deal with your separation throughout, we can still assist you. For example, you may instigate divorce proceedings yourself, but need help with the financial aspects of your separation; or should you attend mediation where, 33 depending upon your circumstances Legal Aid is sometimes available, then you will be referred back to solicitors to convert the mediators’ summary into a legally binding document. This is something that we can prepare for you. Alternatively, you may need some professional assistance in completing the financial disclosure document, known as the ‘Form E’, should you have been asked to complete one.
