E N J OY THE CHALLENGE
Welcome Hi everyone, Well August is upon us again, is it just me or are the months racing by at break neck speed? The school holidays are now here and the kids are probably bored already, so why not check out this month’s events, you may find something to keep them entertained, for a little while at least. The bi-annual Aldington Soapbox Derby takes place this year on Bank Holiday Monday. It’s a great day out for the family, and the creative speed freaks among us are offered an adrenaline fueled race down Forge Hill, hoping that their Karts make it to the bottom in one piece - and the right way up! August has a number of high profile birthdays, Alexander Fleming b: 1881 Enid Blyton b: 1897, Mother Teresa b: 1910, and then there’s Madonna and Michael Jackson b:1958. Last but not least - ME! All gifts gratefully received, just kidding! Sadly August is also the month the world lost Elvis Presley in 1977, it was one of those shock announcements that ensures you never forget where you were at the time, much like Kennedy in 1963 - although I was much too young to remember that one! On a positive note, as one door closes another opens, my husband was born just eight days before the loss of Kennedy. He may not be famous and powerful but, like Mary Poppins, he’s practically perfect. So much so he’s known to those that love him as Peter Poppins or Peeps for short! Until next time, have a great month!

Tropical Paradise by Pippa Greenwood
4
Have you missed out on a summer holiday again this year, or do you still think longingly of that fabulous tropical trip you had a few years back? This time of year, as the summer’s end is not too far away, is when so many of us wish for that exotic holiday we never quite had! So why not try to recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead? The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing …..and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip. A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise. Keep plants well watered and fed and they should be full of vigour too.
Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Ok, so it won’t yield a crop of bananas but it’ll provide a tropical look and a good deal of comment too. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves. If you want more than just foliage (and who doesn’t?) then you might like the idea of some tropical effect flowers added in to the mix. If so, try the bulbous Eucomis bicolour with out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume
and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant. Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features whether living – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. It is well worth checking what is available in local garden centres and junk shops or maybe even the local council recycling centre. Even if you go to the garden centre, statues and garden ornaments are very variable in price and there are now many available which are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle like atmosphere you are creating.
the garden It is always worth visiting local nurseries and garden centres for more ideas and to find your own personal favourite tropical-effect plants to add to the mix. There are plenty to choose from and other plants to consider could include : tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads (again great in a pot), citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) which are not always reliably hardy but can be used throughout the summer and then overwintered in a suitable greenhouse, conservatory or window sill and bamboos (including the dramatic black-stemmed ‘nigra’, Filipendula rubra, Ligularia, gloriosa lily and Fatsia japonica). So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter….. all you need now is a deck chair and maybe, just maybe a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for Nemaslug & other biocontrols, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders SoftTie, pop-up crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.

Why you mustn’t leave your dog in a hot car Leaving your dog in a hot car with little ventilation makes it prone to heat stroke in a matter of minutes. Dogs’ extreme sensitivity to heat means that even if you have left the windows open and provided water, their wellbeing is at serious risk. Heat stroke occurs when the dog becomes unable to cool itself down. Excessive panting and red gums are signs of overheating, but if you see a dog that is also vomiting or displays a lack of coordination, you need to act quickly. What to do in the case of heat stroke • Contact a vet straight away • Offer the dog cool rather than cold water, in small amounts • Move them into the shade • Wrap in cool damp cloths, particularly the head
8
The use of cool water is an important factor as opposed to water that is too cold, otherwise you could send the dog into a state of shock. Why are dogs so sensitive to heat? Dogs are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do – they cool down by panting, and also via their nose and the pads on their feet. As a result, irreparable damage to internal organs occurs very quickly when they overheat, and many dogs do not recover. Short-nosed breeds including pugs and bulldogs are particularly susceptible to heat stroke, as are overweight dogs. Even on a cloudy day, they may struggle to cool themselves down.

WORDWHEEL
Puzzle Time Sudoku
Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.
Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it, you solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

“A Great British Success Story” How Harvey Bowden rose from humble plumber to establishing the UK’s most popular water softener company... Harvey was born and raised in Cornwall – an area renowned for it’s soft water. So when he moved with his family to Surrey 40 years ago, it wasn’t long before they noticed a problem. Harvey’s wife Ann noticed how hard the water was and how much more time she was spending cleaning lime scale from sinks, taps and baths. The increased cost of soaps and detergents to deal with hard water also came as quite a surprise.
14
After mentioning the problem one day to her neighbour, she learned her neighbour had something called a ‘water softener’ installed, which eliminated these problems. Ann decided that she wanted one and so spent her own money to buy it. Harvey recalls “I was a plumber and thought it extravagant but when I installed it I couldn’t believe how good it was. So I started recommending them to my customers”. In the beginning... Impressed with his customer’s feedback, Harvey formed Surrey Softeners Ltd in 1978 and began supplying and installing Permutit softeners. Before long, he became the biggest ever Permutit water softener seller, installer and dealer. A few short years later in 1981, Harvey opened his first factory on Hipley Street in Old Woking and Harvey Water Softeners was born. Production began on a twin cylinder non-electric undersink water softener which he had developed from his experience fitting and installing softeners. Harvey improved his water softener by creating small blocks of salt to replace the old fashioned tablets, and continually works on making sure his softeners are the smallest and most efficient on the market.
The popularity of his softeners grew, allowing Harvey to build the business together with his family until it became the largest and most successful water softener company in the UK and instigated the development of the market. And today… Harvey Water Softeners are proud to be the largest manufacturer of domestic water softeners in the UK. With over 100 staff and over 200,000 happy customers, Harvey’s vision of a water softener in every home in the UK grows nearer. “Every home in the UK would benefit from a water softener because the water is hard. Hard water is unnecessary. If it makes sense for one person, then it makes sense for everybody. We all use water every day and hard water does not do any job nearly as well as softened water does”. When asked what his favourite benefit of soft water is, he happily replies “Showering and shaving in softened water is the thing I enjoy the most. The pure joy of clean water and the occasional wallow in a deep bath with real soap bubbles is wonderful. Also my skin doesn’t itch.” Although Harvey is now semi-retired and the day to day running of the business is in the capable hands of his son Casey, when he isn’t enjoying one of his many hobbies including vintage motorcycles and sailing he can still be found at the factory talking to his customers, assisting his staff or working on his next big idea. Home & Interiors Victorian Style
16
It may not be the height of fashion, but there is much to be said for Victorian style, which is confident, distinctive and eminently comfortable, says Katherine Sorrell From society to science, politics to industry, the Victorian era was a time of enormous transformation. The middle classes expanded rapidly, and their homes became the perfect vehicles with which to show off both their newly acquired wealth and their cultural savvy. The result? An interior style that was exuberant, eclectic and often over the top. The high Victorian style was a riot of revivalism, and different periods were mixed with abandon. The main ‘Battle of the Styles’, however, was between ‘Greek’, (in other words, all types of classical architecture and decoration), and ‘Gothic’ (more or less any style reminiscent of Olde Englande). The main ingredients for Victorian living were not so far from where we are today, give or take a tweak in colour and pattern. Tiled hallways and polished, dark wood floors with a central rug featuring large, bold patterns set the scene,
By Katherine Sorrell
while patterned wallpaper was de rigueur. Wooden furniture was dark, solid and often very large, but we would recognise much of it, from dressers and dining tables to sideboards and writing desks. Upholstered seating was the major development from the preceding Georgian era. Coil springing had been invented in the 1820s, and Victorian sofas and chairs featured deep buttons and comfortable, curving shapes. Metal bedsteads were introduced to Britons at the Great Exhibition of 1851 – and have changed little in style ever since. As far as colour choices went, the Victorians loved anything rich, deep and vivid. These hues worked well with the dark brown furniture that predominated, but are best used judiciously today. That said, they can be most attractive in the right place: deep shades, such as crimson, claret, bottle green, sharp yellow, purple, mahogany, terracotta and Prussian blue, were preferred for sitting rooms, dining rooms and studies; paler and fresher hues were considered to be more suitable for bedrooms. Lighting has, of course, altered a great deal in the last 150 years or so. When Victoria came to the throne, oil and candle lamps were the only form of lighting in most homes, but during her reign first gas lighting was developed and then, at the very end of the 19th century, early electricity. There were a great many elaborate
and ornamental styles of lamp, including swan-necked brass wall lights, flower-shaped glass shades and china lamps covered with floral sprigs. The Victorian middle-class kitchen, used only by servants, was a very plain room, equipped with free-standing tables, with the sink in an adjacent scullery. And the bathroom only came into being as a separate room in the 1870s. Along with indoor bathrooms came distinctive sanitaryware – large, often colourfully decorated basins, and enamelled roll-top baths on ball and claw or scroll feet, much of which can be found in reproduction form for those with spacious enough rooms. Because Victorians considered bare rooms to be in poor taste, their houses were filled knick knacks, objets d’art and collections, some of which are right on-trend today? Other Victorian accessories have not stood the test of time quite so well, including black and white miniature portraits and toby jugs. Nor has a helpful kitchen accessory, employed for anyone unlucky enough to suffer from cockroaches – a hedgehog kept in a box. Cake and Bake Caramel Apple Sponge Bake This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche. 18
Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve
Makes 9 squares Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper. 2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel. 3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set). 4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. 5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.
TIP
Replace the apple slices with peeled and sliced pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert.

We are looking to trace our sister who was born Brenda Carr in South
Shields Tyne & Wear ( was County Durham at the time) . She was fostered and then moved to Kent with foster parents and subsequently adopted. She is one of 14 siblings. Although there are only ten left including herself. She was born in December 1959. We have tried on numerous occasions to find her, with no luck. So we are hoping this time with the help of readers of The Village Directory we may strike it lucky. We were all placed into the care of the local authority but have managed to trace each other with the exception of Brenda. We know she will have had her name changed. But hope that she knows about her adoption and this might enlighten her to her other brothers and sisters who have always wanted to know that she is okay and has never been forgotten by any of us. She is the missing link to making our family complete. My name is Barbara Carr and I can be contacted on 07715 497 611, Thank you.

Local Kumon students honoured at awards ceremony Students from the Kumon Ashford Park Farm Study Centre were recognised at an Advanced Student Honour Roll awards ceremony at the Kingsnorth Recreation Centre on 7th July, for their success and continued development studying on the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. 27 students and their parents attended the awards ceremony. The Worshipful Mayor of Ashford, Geraldine Dyer, presented students with their certificates and medals for surpassing the Kumon International Standard, meaning that they are studying advanced work in comparison to their peers world-wide. The ceremony also encouraged and motivated students who have yet to reach ASHR status. Daily study of the Kumon programmes requires dedication and perseverance from both the student and their parents. This ceremony is a chance to not only reward and celebrate the students’ achievements but to also thank parents for their ongoing commitment to their child’s Kumon studies. Instructor at the study centre, Liz Spencer, said: “The students should really be proud of themselves for what they have achieved. Both they and their parents have put in a lot of effort to get to this point, where they are working above the Kumon International Standard” Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their
independent study skills and confidently tackle advanced work beyond the international standard for their age. Students initially start at a comfortable level with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm before progressing to more advanced work. The recent OECD Pisa test results highlight that the UK is falling behind global peers in the international tests taken by 15-year-olds, having failed to make it into the top 20 in both maths and reading. At Kumon, we aim for our maths and English students to reach an international approximation of their school grade (the Kumon International Standard), within their first year of study. By supporting students to reach and surpass this international standard, Kumon is equipping students with the independent learning skills and ability in maths and English to successfully compete in an increasingly global community. Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, with over 66,000 students studying at more than 650 study centres. All Kumon study centres offer a Free Assessment. For more information on the Ashford Park Farm Study Centre, please contact Instructor Liz Spencer on 01233 885920 or email ashfordparkfarm@ kumoncentre.co.uk

New Sports Facilities for Kingsnorth and Bridgefield Brand new sports and leisure facilities are set to be erected in Kingsnorth and Bridgefield. In addition, the current open space in Bridgefield could soon provide an adventure play area for local young people. The proposed land is rich with fauna and flora and the council is looking to convert it into a nature conservation area for the community to enjoy. The MUGA in Kingsnorth and the new play area in Bridgefield will be funded by Section 106 money from Taylor Wimpy. Cllr Blanford, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure and the Environment, said: “These are two exciting projects and the new facilities will be a great asset to the local Kingsnorth community. “The multi use games area will provide the perfect place for people of all ages to enjoy a variety of sports and leisure activities, and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.” Mr Witts, Head of Kingsnorth Primary School, said: “We feel very privileged to be able to have use of this fantastic resource and students now, and in the future, will all benefit from the new facilities. “This additional space will not only enable our children to partake in fun sports and activities, but it will also allow us to hold exciting school events there. “We are extremely grateful for all of the hard work that Kingsnorth Parish Council, Ashford Borough Council, Kent County Council and Canterbury Diocese have put in to making this project work.”

health & Lifestyle London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge Cyclists can take life by the handle bars on Sunday 13th September and enjoy a stunning 65 or 80 mile cycle ride from London’s Greenwich Park to Canterbury, Kent. The UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, The Children’s Trust, are appealing for cyclists of all abilities to take part. Kim Derry, Events Manager for the event, tells us “the ride really is open to anyone. We have cyclists of all shapes and sizes, male and female, and of all ages, from 16 to 60! By signing up now, everyone has enough time to train, whether you’re a seasoned rider, or still need to go out and get yourself a bike”.
30
Riders meet at The Pavilion Café in Greenwich Park between 8 and 9am, where hot and cold breakfasts will be available. The route, planned and provided by professional Cycling Support Services, has been carefully thought out and is both well signposted and marshalled, with regular refreshment stops. Riders will explore the beautiful Kent countryside including the historic Pilgrim’s Way, before crossing the finish line to a much welcomed sports massage, along with a post-ride party, where friends and family are encouraged to join in the fun.
“The ride is just fantastic, and we’ve had some really amazing feedback from previous years. A lot of riders we see returning each year which is great testimony for us. We always encourage feedback, which means we are able to make continuous improvements to the event. This year stands to be the biggest one yet, and we are aiming for between 3 and 400 hundred sign ups”. For those coming from the Kent area, a coach is available to take cyclists up from Canterbury to the start line in Greenwich Park, a space of which can be booked via The Children’s Trust website. “This year we are working hard to create a great after party and we really encourage friends and family to meet their cycling heroes to celebrate. We’ll have amazing balloon creations, face painting for the children, music, stands & stalls, and a great selection of food including a BBQ, and an on-site café catering for healthier options”. Why not become part of The Children’s Trust’s biggest cycle event and sign up now? Workplace Pensions and Auto-enrolment Automatic enrolment is ‘one of the biggest reforms to UK pensions in decades. This radical set of reforms means that all UK businesses who employ one or more workers must put them into a workplace pension scheme, if they meet certain criteria. The first phase of reforms got underway in October 2012, and employers will be coming into the scheme over the following six years. The automatic enrolment of employees and certain other workers into workplace pension schemes draws on ‘nudge theory’ – the notion that individuals can be nudged into taking beneficial actions that they might otherwise avoid, such as joining and contributing to a pension plan. Millions who might never have got round to applying for a pension are expected to save in schemes organised by their employer.
32
For employers, automatic enrolment brings extra cost and administration. For the first time, employers will be obliged to pay into pensions unless employees opt out. There will be extra administration, involving communicating with staff, dealing with pension providers and satisfying the Pensions Regulator. The process of introducing automatic enrolment into an organisation is not something that can be left to the last minute. Almost all employers are affected. The main exception is a company with only a single employee who is also a director. The range of employers affected, therefore, runs from multi-national companies to a family who employs a nanny. The change also affects all ‘workers’ between ages 16 and 75 who work, or usually work, in the UK. ‘Workers’ includes employees and others who are contracted to work for you, except as part of their own business. Agency workers are included, and employers are likely to be responsible if they pay them directly. Eligible jobholders must be automatically enrolled into a suitable pension scheme unless they are members of an existing ‘qualifying scheme.’ It cannot be assumed that a current scheme will necessarily be suitable for automatic enrolment, because it may not meet the requirements for payment levels or include an appropriate agreement with the pension provider. Non-eligible jobholders must be offered a pension on the same basis as eligible jobholders, but they must apply to join rather than being automatically enrolled.
Every employer has a ‘staging date’ between 1 October 2012 and 1 February 2018. The ‘staging date’ is determined by the size of the PAYE scheme at 1 April 2012, the PAYE reference number or, for businesses started since 1 April 2012, when they first paid PAYE income. All employers with a PAYE scheme membership of at least 60 are required to be operating auto-enrolment. Those with at least 50 staff were brought in on the 1st of April 2015, and smaller companies started in June 2015. There is no exemption for employers with fewer than five employees, a floor that applied under the now defunct stakeholder pension employer access rules. After the staging date, employees who become eligible jobholders must be automatically enrolled, although they can defer enrolment for up to three months. And every three years an employer must automatically re-enrol those who have chosen to opt out. Because there’s a significant amount of effort involved in assessing the workforce and ensuring that appropriate pension arrangements are in place, the Pensions Regulator recommends that employers start planning for automatic enrolment 12 to 18 months before their staging date. Each employer must have one or more ‘qualifying’ pension schemes. A qualifying scheme must include

a formal agreement that the employer will pay at least the minimum contributions, including passing on any from the employees. In addition, employees who are automatically enrolled must not be required to make any decisions, which means there must be a suitable default investment option. Complying with auto-enrolment obligations is a complex process, and it’s important that businesses develop an action plan; auto-enrolment imposes new duties and, probably, additional costs. There are many decisions to be made and potential pitfalls at every stage. There is then the ongoing process of ensuring that all employees are auto-enrolled as they become eligible and repeating the process every three years for any who have opted out. The Pensions Regulator has produced detailed guidance and pension providers can help to some extent, but many companies value the expertise of an adviser who can look at their particular circumstances and recommend solutions.
