Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful weather, the magazine can be a real challenge though when the office turns into a sauna at deadline time. Luckily I don’t overlook the sea, so there’s no likelihood of me suddenly making a dash for a cooling dip, like my husband did last month on a trip to Sandgate for fish & chips! Fully clothed, he just took his socks and shoes off and dove in, closely followed by my son’s friend Ashley. Mad! I had a call from a very nice gentleman in the Woodchurch area the other day. He is fairly new to the area and was struggling to locate local B&B accomodation for his visiting family. Unfortunately I was unable to help him but it made me think. If enough B&B’s are interested in listing their businesses in the magazine I would be happy to set up a dedicated section.
So if you run a B&B and are interested do get in touch, if it’s viable I will get too work on it right away. If you would like to see any specific items included in the magazine do get in touch with your ideas, or if there is a particular type of business that you struggle to find, do let me know and I will attempt to track it down for you. Have a great month ~ Debbie e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk T: 01233 720488

the garden
Hot Favourites by Pippa Greenwood Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a mass of hot colours. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre at this time of year will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now. For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September.
6
I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisy-like flowers - these should last you through October. For some screaming scarlets and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown.
• Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it’s wetted right to the base before you begin. • Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture. • Once the plants are in position, water them in thoroughly - the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots. • Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. This will help to keep moisture in, protect the plant roots from the heat of the sun and at the same time keep weeds at bay. Don’t forget to tend to your hot border again in the autumn, when you will find small versions of many of these plants readily available in garden centres, often at only a couple of pounds per pot and when you will also be able to plant some more warming oranges and reds using bulbs and corms. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September planting and regular advice emails from Pippa. Buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh and Envirofleece.

A Dog’s Thoughts

With the internet, electronic games, and a huge amount of television channels at our disposal it is easy to spend our free time looking at a screen, or having great fun with the latest technology. The days pass with little fresh air in our lungs, particularly if we, as so many do, work indoors. This is where the benefits of dog ownership comes in. Ask any new dog owner how their recent addition has changed their every day life. After all it’s not remarkably difficult to lock oneself away from the world, to lounge on a comfy sofa with that glass of wine in your hand, putting on those extra pounds. Your canine friend needs a good run around, and yes! most want their daily jaunt as early in the day as possible. It is certainly not difficult to comply with the requests for exercise when an enthusiastic hairball hops to their paws and runs for the door, or whines pitifully telling you “Way past walk time.” Not only does your relationship improve with your pet, you get that shared quality time together. On theses walks you both benefit personally in many ways. You gain physical stamina, muscle tone, weight maintenance, the improvement in overall strength of body. Mentally a steady ramble will improve your quality of life, it will clear your mind and thought processes in helping you to relax.

Seasonal Delights Peach Melba Shortcakes Serves 4
Serves 8
Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert. They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive.
12
Ingredients: • • • •
175g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced 55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk
Filling • • • • •
125g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar 6 tbsp single cream 175g fresh raspberries 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced
Tip The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves.

An independent, family run business
Twelve months ago, a number of like-minded broadcasters and business personnel pooled their knowledge and resources to create a dedicated internet, community radio station which they named Channel Radio. The station is based at Haguelands Village, Burmarsh, Dymchurch, Kent and broadcasts an eclectic mix of chat and music, much of which is related to the Romney Marsh and surrounding area. One of their flag ship programmes is ‘Marsh Mellow’ which has now been on the air for over 7 months and is slowly, but surely, attracting a devoted audience, interested in all aspects of Romney Marsh
14
Clive Looker is the prime mover of this show, being the researcher, producer and presenter, so the programme succeeds or fails on his efforts alone. The show is peppered with music, and interviews with a little humour thrown in for good measure. Clive is always looking for something new and different to tempt his listeners’ aural palette, and would like to hear from anyone in the Romney Marsh and surrounding area, involved in raising money for charity, or anyone who has an unusual hobby or weird pet, is a budding, artist, musician or author, has won an award or competition, or simply has an idea which they think would entertain the listeners . Whatever you have to say email clivelooker@channelradio.co.uk he just can’t wait to interview you. Channel Radio is a dedicated internet station. You can receive channel radio on ipods, ipads, iphones, smartphones, pcs, tablets, laptops and internet radios. Listen to Marsh Mellow live every Thursday between 4 & 5pm or go to www.channelradio.co.uk/listen-againThursday. Each programme is available for the following 7 days after broadcast. Has Your Watch Stopped? Is It Losing Time?
18
For thousands of years, ancient civilizations have used celestial bodies to measure the passage of time. The Sumerians tracked the movements of planets and stars to record the seasons, and even created ancient calendars to record lunar cycles. It is believed that around 4236 BC, the Egyptians discovered the `Dog Star` rising alongside the sun every 365 days, it is believed to be “one of the earliest years recorded in history” and would later evolve into the current 365day calendar. 3500 BC Egyptians used giant obelisk shaped objects which projected shadows on the ground to track the 12 parts of the day we know them as sundials. The Greeks then invented water clocks but they had problems with erosion so they became unreliable. There was also a problem that during the winter as they would freeze up. So then along came sand clocks, we know them as an hour glass. TThe first modern mechanical clock was created some time between 500-1000 AD in Europe the exact date is unknown. It used weights that moved gears which in turn moved a single hour hand. These clocks were very large and require the weights to be reset 5 times a day. It wasn’t until centuries later that the next major hurdle in clock making was reached when the clocks driving weights were replaced with the invention of the coiled spring by Peter Henlein this was around 1500. Then in 1504 he invented the first portable clock this odd looking egg shaped thing was made from iron and it only had an hour hand and no protective covering over the dial. The telling of time rapidly started to move on when in 1577 the invention of the minute hand was designed

The next few centuries saw the evolution of pocket watches they became smaller, and more accurate and very ornately designed. In 1704 Facio came to London with an idea to use jewelled pivot bearings. His idea was that precious stones would not wear or erode like metal pivots would this is when the jewelled movement was invented and is still used today. Over the years watches got more and more accurate. Abraham-Louis Perrelet has the distinction of one of the biggest advancements in clock-making when he designed the first self winding watch in 1770. The pocket watch was called the pedometer named after the source of its power a weighted lever that jerks as the person walked. While these many historic dates were important to the evolution of timekeeping it was April 19th 1891 that changed “time” as we know it today. Due to a malfunctioning conductors watch two trains collided near Cleveland, Ohio, Killing 11 people. News of this disaster quickly spread launching a demand for all railroads (and communities) to adopt a timekeeping standard. Suddenly the modern world developed a fascination with `accurate` time.

Hay Fever: A Summer of Misery? Maybe Not!
20
As many of us look forward to the summer months there are over 15 million people in the UK who will be struggling with hay fever. Although often regarded as a trivial condition it can leave many struggling to function in their normal day to day lives. Sneezing, runny blocked noses (rhinitis) and itchy eyes, nose and throat are triggered by the body as a result of allergens such as tree, grass and weed pollen. How can the Bowen Technique help? The Bowen Technique is a gentle, non-invasive treatment involving gentle rolling movements over specific parts of the body to stimulate a healing response; in hay fever it will typically be concentrated around the face and neck region. Bowen stimulates the release of congestion in the lymphatic system that builds up behind the muscles in the neck. This area may have been blocked for many years and by improving the drainage it has been found to improve hay fever symptoms and in some cases to clear it altogether. When should I have the treatment? Some people like to have a treatment one or two months before their symptoms begin to prevent the possible onset and others will come for acute treatment, either way Bowen has a part to play in a happier spring and summer. How many sessions will I require? As we are all different this can vary, I have seen as little as one treatment give a patient relief, but generally 3 to 6 weekly sessions are
required to clear the congestion. For more information or to book an appointment please contact me, Cassandra Dry on 01797 369226 www.elysiumtherapies.com www.thebowentechnique.com

Misconceptions About Wills Rosalind Johnson, Senior Partner
As part of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson of Tenterden law firm Pengelly & Rylands looks at common misconceptions about Wills. Q Can an Executor benefit under a Will? A Yes, an Executor can benefit from a Will but they or their spouse or civil partner must not be one of the two witnesses when the person making the Will signs it. Q My family know what I want, do I need a Will? A Without a Will, your family will lack the power to make important decisions. They will be bound by what the law dictates about such things as how to administer your affairs, who will get your assets, when they will get them and who will have legal authority to look after your children. Q My family is very close, they won’t argue over money. Do I need to be specific in my Will?
26 A In these austere times, more and more families are contesting Wills. Grief and money are not a good combination and will bring out strong emotions. The clearer you are about how you want your affairs handled after your death, the less chance there should be for costs of litigation and disputes which can destroy family relationships (and see the estate swallowed up in legal costs). Q Will all my assets pass under my Will? A No. Assets which are in joint names such as bank accounts automatically pass to the joint owner on the first death, even though they may have made no contribution to the money in the account. Accounts are sometimes put into joint names for practical reasons, e.g. an elderly parent and an adult child. Although the account may pass automatically to the child, the share provided by the parent will be added to the parent’s estate in calculating if any tax is due. Q Is a homemade Will kit enough? A In many cases, homemade Wills create more work for lawyers but are not good for beneficiaries who could wait many months or even years to receive their entitlement. Q Does having a Will avoid probate? A No. A Will is the primary tool of the probate system. A Will is like a letter to the Probate Court telling it how you
want your property distributed and who is to deal with it – your Executors. In small estates, or when assets are held jointly, it is not always necessary to apply for probate. It very much depends on individual circumstances. Q Does my Will and the gross net value of my assets remain private? A No, once probate is granted, a Will becomes a public record. This means nosey friends or neighbours can apply to the Probate Registry for a copy of your Will to know the size of your estate and who benefits. The only people whose Wills cannot be made public are the Royal Family! Q With no Will, does my property go to the state? A No. Without a Will, you will die intestate and the intestacy rules say who will receive your assets. So called “common law”, husbands and wives have no entitlement and if they need provision from your estate for a child of the relationship, or themselves, they would have to apply to the Court to decide what, if anything, was “fair and reasonable” provision. There is a limited time without the Court’s consent to bring any claim. For more information, or to discuss Wills generally, please contact Rosalind Johnson or Gill Snow at Pengelly & Rylands on 01580 762248.

The other night I was invited out for a night with the ‘girls.’ I told my husband that I would be home by midnight , ‘I promise!’ Well, the hours passed and the Margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3am a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.
28
Quickly, realising my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him! (Even when totally smashed... three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos-- MIDNIGHT!) The next morning, my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him ‘ MIDNIGHT .’ He didn’t seem annoyed in the least. Phew, I got away with that one! Then he said ‘We need a new cuckoo clock.’ When I asked him why, he said, ‘Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times... then said, ‘oh, crap... cuckooed four more times... cleared its throat... cuckooed another three times... giggled... cuckooed twice more... and then tripped over the coffee table and broke w ind ! wind
