Welcome to the village directory Welcome to The Village Directory for the Stour Valley, a bi-monthly magazine delivered by Royal Mail to every rural home and business in the CT4 area of the Stour Valley. You may remember receiving an edition of my magazine last year. Following requests from my own advertisers to extend my coverage into this area, I published an edition in September 2012, only to discover that Donna Whitby already had the area covered with Inline Magazine. In my opinion Inline Magazine was extremely good quality, and Donna was running it in much the same way as I run mine, although her coverage was much larger i.e. using Royal Mail to ensure the everyone received a magazine no matter how remote. I therefore decided that it made no sense to bombard readers with a second magazine of the same type and compete with Donna, that’s not my style, so I gracefully bowed out. Although not discovering Inline Magazine before I published was an oversight on my part, it did result in Donna and myself communicating with one another and comparing notes. Running a magazine can be tough and it’s so good to discover that you are not alone in the trials and tribulations that go along with it. When, sadly, Donna decided to close down her magazine, she contacted me. Therefore I will attempt to continue in Donna’s footsteps to serve the rural homes throughout the Stour Valley. My coverage is not as large as Donna’s, I will be focusing purely on the rural villages, although some magazines will be dropped off in some locations around the boundaries of Ashford and Canterbury.

If for any reason you don’t receive a magazine do let me know, all I need is your postcode in order to report the non-delivery to Royal Mail. This first edition is quite small but I hope that with time, support from local business and contributions from you, it will become a valuable source of local information to all its readers, as well as a convenient medium through which the community can communicate. The Village Directory

Brings Print to Life Last month I announced in my other magazines that The Village Directory is about to come to life and make its printed pages interactive and clickable, well its here! By downloading an app called Layar to your smartphone you are now able to scan the pages of the magazine and access clickable buttons for all our advertisers and view additional images and, in some cases, video.

4

These are all clickable, just as they would be if you were on a website. For now most of these buttons will allow you to either phone an advertiser or go to their website, but they can be programmed to do much more. Video and photo galleries can be included to support editorial content, go to page 14, scan the page and watch a video of the resent Darling Buds of May Car Show. It’s all very futuristic and fun!

What is Layar? As the world leader in mobile augmented reality and interactive print, Layar is bridging the gap between the print and digital worlds. Layar-enabled interactive print magazines feature extra digital content that readers can engage with using their smartphone or tablet. The free Layar App is available to download from iTunes and Play Store.

For the time being this exciting new concept is only available in my Ashford and Stour Valley magazines, but in time it will be rolled out across the villages too, so do watch this space.

How Do I Access Interactive Magazine Content? Once you have downloaded Layar to your phone or tablet simply open the app and you will see a scan function in the middle of the screen.

If you are interested in our interactive advertising please give me a call on 01233 720488 or email me at: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk. ~ Debbie Allen

Hover your phone or tablet over the magazine page and, if scanned successfully, you will see interactive features floating above the page.

WE NOW GIVE YOU THE OPTION TO VIEW THIS MAGAZINE IN TWO WAYS: ‘OFFLINE’ AS A PRINTED AD OR AN ‘ONLINE’ PERSPECTIVE USING ‘INTERACTIVE PRINT’ ON YOUR SMART PHONE

elcome, to Babes In The Wood. My name is Julie and I would like to introduce to you my Nanny Agency and Childcare Consultancy in KENT. Babes In The Wood was born in 2001 in St. John’s Wood, LONDON, when I had my first child. I had worked previously as a children’s nanny for 10 years. So I believed that I was highly skilled in the knowhow and knowledge to offer a successful service to others. I not only know what a nanny has to do, to deliver a fantastic and professional service but I can also relate to the worries and traumas that one can feel when seeking their ideal long term child carer. Children are precious and deserve the time and care when finding the perfect match. So here I have developed a personal agency for all child care requirements. I meet all my families personally, so that I can make a perfect match first time round, causing less disruption to the whole family. On the home visit I offer the opportunity to discuss your requirements fully and any queries with regards to employing a nanny or other child carer but most importantly you get to meet me personally. I interview all my nannies and child carers personally; I visit child minders at their homes. I do all the background checks. All the hard work is done for you by me! Testimonial from Mersham (Jan 2013) “Babes In The Wood were fantastic at understanding my slightly unusual work situation and found me child carers who fitted my requirements perfectly.” I look forward to hearing from you. I am more than happy to help.

the garden

Hot Favourites by Pippa Greenwood Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. You can plant to create a mass of hot colours. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre at this time of year will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now. For real energy and vibrancy, choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September.

6

I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisy-like flowers - these should last you through October. For some screaming scarlets and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moisture-loving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown. To make sure that your summer time plantings do well, take heed of the following tips: • If it’s a hot day, try to plant in early evening or at least late afternoon when the main heat of the sun has died down. • Always make sure that plants are really well watered before you put them in the ground. • Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it’s wetted right to the base before you begin.

• Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture.

7

• Once the plants are in position, water them in thoroughly - the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots. • Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2–3 inches *(5–7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. This will help to keep moisture in, protect the plant roots from the heat of the sun and at the same time keep weeds at bay. Don’t forget to tend to your hot border again in the autumn, when you will find small versions of many of these plants readily available in garden centres, often at only a couple of pounds per pot and when you will also be able to plant some more warming oranges and reds using bulbs and corms. Self-Publishing Facts Everyone’s doing it, but what’s involved in self-publishing? James Smith @jsmithwriter

8

You’re packing your bags after two weeks in the sun, and with a few hours to spare before leaving for the airport, you finish the last few pages of that 500-page novel. It called itself a ‘thriller’, but it was more of a yawn than a page-turner, so you discretely leave it on the bedside dresser for the next holidaymaker to battle through. And a little later on the aircraft, you wonder: can I do better? Indeed, there are many writers doing better via the process of self-publishing. Some literary agents and publishers baulk at the notion of this disruptive new kid on the block stirring up trouble. But like the digital revolution in music, these intermediaries must adapt and innovate, or simply go out of business. Literary agents are no longer necessarily the gatekeepers to publishing success. The doors have opened for everyday people to reach the masses with their writing and recent established successes have proved that self-publishing is credible and here to stay. To start, you need access to a computer and the Internet and

be able to format your book for upload to a publishing website. This may sound quite technical, but there is plenty of information and help available, and you can always ask friends, relatives or even freelancers to do the job for you. Good material No matter how wonderful or ground-breaking your idea, you must present it as a wellwritten story with a good structure in order to give you the best chance of success. Hone the craft of writing to your best ability; this will afford you respect amongst your readership. As with all creative endeavours, you will be open to the critics, so at least tackle the technical side of writing to deter them from attacking you on a basic level. There are many websites and books providing excellent advice on how to improve your writing, and it’s vital to keep learning. Read widely and write continually to improve. ‘The Elements of Style’ by Strunk and White is a brief and humorous read that will whip your writing into shape so that you can forge ahead with renewed confidence.

Proofreading and editing Ask people outside of your circle of friends and family to read and comment on your work. It’s not easy to invite opinion, but just watch how views differ. You may, however, discover a consistent thread within their comments from which you can learn and adjust the prose accordingly. One of the wisest investments is to hire an experienced proofreader to check for grammatical and typing errors, and to provide editing suggestions on style. The extent to which the proofreader is involved creatively can be decided between you, but just remember that the biggest self-publishing blunder of them all is not having your work proofread. There are many freelance services available on the Internet, so do some research and obtain a number of estimates from the professionals. Formatting Once you have the manuscript on your computer in a program such as Microsoft Word, you will need to have it formatted for upload to a site like Kindle Direct Publishing

the home (KDP) or Smashwords. There are guidelines on these websites, and books that you can download free of charge, explaining the step-by-step process to add the relevant headings, copyright notices and table of contents to your files. It’s very important that the formatting is correct and there are freelance professionals that will oblige for a small fee. Designing the cover Many excellent self-published books are let down by poor covers. Unless you are a graphic designer and have a talent for this type of work, then hire someone who can represent your work professionally. Often the cover is the first thing people will see on the Internet, so it must shine above the abundant competition.

Publishing When your material is ready, you can upload and publish. The KDP and Smashwords sites enable you to prepare your material in the form of a draft via a ‘dashboard’, and when you’re ready, you can the set your price for various territories around the globe and submit it for publication. The book and cover is checked for quality, and within 24 hours, released to the world on many websites and online stores. Subsequently, you may find that your book requires amendments or revisions, and this is all neatly handled by the online system.

you can be proud. People of all backgrounds and ages are self-publishing, so if you have a great story, be sure to put it out to the world. Links kdp.amazon.com www.smashwords.com www.writersandartists.co.uk

There is much to learn, but this quick-fire guide will hopefully inspire you to put pen to paper - or fingers to keyboards - to produce a book of which

Seasonal Delights Peach Melba Shortcakes Serves 4

Serves 8

Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert. They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive.

10

Ingredients: • • • •

175g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced 55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk

Filling • • • • •

125g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar 6 tbsp single cream 175g fresh raspberries 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced

Tip The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves.

Family Issues Separating together and the alternatives to Court

It is not always an easy journey. It can be made better with the right support, help, advice and guidance. It can also be made worse if a confrontational stance is taken and then compounded by the clients’ representatives.

Most people who are going through the process of separation or divorce would prefer to avoid having to go to court if at all possible.

The court process is stressful, time consuming and costly - emotionally and financially - and with government cut backs taking hold in challenging economic times, the process can be slow.

In a recent report by the Legal Ombudsman family law is the most commonly complained about area of law, specifically concerning the significant costs that can accrue in cases where the lawyers are seen to run away with a client’s apparent wish to have their day in court. Often the reality is that many clients do not wish to go to court but need to be given thoughtful,

possible and should be able to give clients full information at the outset about the likely costs of representation and the alternatives to going to court, including: Family Mediation Accredited Family Mediators, especially those who are also practicing lawyers, are very well placed to provide clients with information about the law and the court process as well as helping couples separate together in a safe, civilized and fair way. There are many benefits to be gained from the process (not least the cost saving) but it is not right process for everyone. Collaborative Law Clients instruct their own lawyers and sign an agreement not to go to court. All issues are addressed in face to face meetings working together to find resolution. Arbitrator makes the decision for the clients which can then be recorded in a court order. Cost will always be an important consideration for most clients. For some ‘access to justice’ will be a worry. There is now very little public funding (legal aid) available for family cases but it is still available for Family Mediation for those that qualify. For those that do (and if Mediation is considered suitable) then the cost will be free. For details of how to find a Family Mediation Service able to offer public funding contact the Legal Aid Agency. Reviewing The Situation…. When the dust settled following the London Olympics, when the British Lions dispersed to their native lands following their triumph in Australia and when Spring Grove pupils left the school to start their Summer Holidays, it was time to review the missions accomplished. To provide the fairest assessment one must measure the achievements against the targets set. As soon as London was awarded the Olympics back in 2005, the powers that be set out to finish 4th in the medals table: in 2012, Team GB finished 3rd behind USA and China. Success. The Lions team that thrilled the home nations 2 weeks ago surely achieved their goal. The Spring Grove Mission statement sets out our aim: “we will develop all who join Spring Grove to their full potential - academically, socially, physically and emotionally in a supportive, caring and friendly community. Within a beautiful rural setting our school is small enough for us to know every child and their family and encourage them to support the school motto of ‘Always Do Your Best’”. Measured against this, have we achieved success? This year we have enjoyed the academic, sporting, artistic, dramatic and musical achievements of our pupils; we have received resounding praise from visitors and members of the Wye community with whom our children come into contact; we have relished the opportunities to be involved in charitable work; above all, we see all of our children thoroughly enjoying their education and I see clear evidence that those who are about to move onto their next schools develop a real love of learning.

We cannot promise success all of the time, however. There are blips on the way; some children experience difficulties with friendships, some struggle with aspects of work, some never seem to get their chances to shine. There are problems to work through - but we promise to take the time solve them. Likewise, Team GB and the Lions did not achieve their triumph without mishap. Solving the problems and winning through against tribulation can make us more resilient and I believe that those children who have experienced the ‘blips’ this year may well be better and stronger for the experience.

wit & wisdom

The other night I was invited out for a night with the ‘girls.’ I told my husband that I would be home by midnight , ‘I promise!’ Well, the hours passed and the Margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.

The next morning, my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him ‘ MIDNIGHT .’ He didn’t seem annoyed in the least. Phew, I got away with that one! Then he said ‘We need a new cuckoo clock.’ When I asked him why, he said, ‘Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times... then said, ‘oh, crap...

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him! (Even when totally smashed... three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos-- MIDNIGHT !)

Del & Peeps Peeps urgently needed a few days off work, but knew the boss wouldn’t allow any leave. So he thought “maybe if I acted “Crazy” the boss would tell me to take a few days off”. So he proceeded to hang upside-down from the ceiling and made funny noises. His co-worker, Del, asked him what he was doing so he said “ I’m pretending to be a light bulb, so that the boss might think I gone “Crazy” and give him a few days off. A few minutes later the boss came into the office. “What on earth are you doing?” he said to Peeps. Peeps said “I’m a light bulb”. The boss said, “You’re clearly stressed out, go home and recuperate for a couple of days.” Peeps jumped down and walked out of the office.... But when Del followed him the boss said “...And where do you think you’re going?!” Del said, “I’m going home too. I can’t work in the dark..”
