Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful weather, the magazine can be a real challenge though when the office turns into a sauna at deadline time. Luckily I don’t overlook the sea, so there’s no likelihood of me suddenly making a dash for a cooling dip, like my husband did last month! By the way, one reader said that she had to look twice, apparently his cream trousers gave the impression that he was “starkers”, she did make me laugh (thank you Jackie!). You have to feel sorry for my family, if they do anything noteworthy the whole borough is likely to find out about it!

by Jackie Witcher - Tenterden Horticultural Society

Well the first thing I must do is report on how the robin scenario went. It was when the ambulance people checked out the nest (another story!) that we knew the eggs had hatched and all was well at that point. Two days later curiosity got the better of me and I just had to have a look. Now we hadn’t heard anything from the nest at all but had noticed feeding going on at a rate of knots for a while, both mum and dad with beaks full of food, in and out all day long. Yet, sadly when I had a good look the nest was empty. At first we thought a magpie or similar had got at the nest but there were no signs of a struggle and the plants weren’t broken in any way, and needless to say no evidence of carnage, so we can only assume (and hope), that they had fledged and flown without us even knowing it. At least I can now leave that huge bottle of nerve pills alone, but secretly I would have loved to have seen those fluffy balls leave the nest. It was a bit late to do much with the basket, but I still had the three geraniums I was going to plant in there so I just popped those in to give the area a bit of colour. I really must mention to you about a new cucumber plant that my neighbour is having a go at. This particular cucumber has been grafted onto a stock and to date she has picked over 10 mini cucumbers. There were originally two arms on the plant of which one turned out to be a melon!!, which she didn’t want so

she took if off. A real good buy and one which I shall definitely have a go at next year. There is nothing to report on the vege patch, as you know it hasn’t been planted this year, but it has had a good dig over and all spent compost has been spread, along with the extra strong manure which pongs to high heaven. Good job my neighbours are easy going, either that or their sense of smell has gone!!!! Anyways with all that goodness going in and it being left to “rest”, hopefully next year everything shall be bumper size!! At least I have had a good crop of raspberries and with a few more still to ripen, it will be raspberries for pudding tomorrow in the form of a raspberry and almond sponge. Try it – make a normal sponge mix ie 4 oz marg, 4oz caster sugar, 4 oz SR flour and 2 eggs. Beat in 1 oz ground almonds and a half teaspoon almond extract. Gently stir in half punnet approx (or more if you wish) of raspberries and turn into a greased pudding dish. Sprinkle with flaked almonds. Bake Gas 4 for ½ hour or until nicely golden brown and cooked through. Serve warm with your favourite ice cream, cream or custard. This has become a favourite of ours as it is a way of using the raspberries and it freezes very well. Being in the health situation I am in at the moment, gardening has become difficult at times as you can imagine. Not being able to bend over easily and lifting is out of the question, I have utilised some of the tools I have to my advantage. For example my long handled hand fork has become a multi tool. Not only can I fork things over, but by twiddling around the weeds to loosen their roots it is fantastic for weeding. After the “twiddling” I pop the fork under the weed, a quick twist and out it comes. Lift the weed with the fork as well, and straight into the rubbish bin it goes. I was well pleased as very little effort is required which means less strain. The garden kneeler, which as you know was purchased several years ago, has now become a useful seat as well. Unable to bend to dead head the ground pots and troughs, I sit and dead head quite happily, shuffling along as I go. Its horrid to say but when one has always been independent, and even though all my friends and neighbours have offered to help me, I hate to accept. I know I know, pride comes before a fall, and I am eternally grateful to them for their support, but all the time I can manage I will. But believe me I know in my heart I shall soon need their help big time! Then it shall be a definite yes please!!! Out of room again, and I never got round to telling you about the frog! and its coffee time too. This week I have made a good old fashioned coconut and cherry cake and for once the cherries didn’t sink, one of hubbys favourites, so I had better have a slice of that whilst there is still some left!! – Till next time (hopefully!!!!)

Around Britain 5 Inventions & Discoveries 1. Belfast, Northern Ireland - Professor Frank Pantridge of Belfast’s Queens University used two car batteries to invent the portable defibrillator, used to administer an electric shock to cardiac patients, in the 1960s. Weighing 70kg/154lb, the first device was installed in an ambulance in 1965. 2. Crowmarsh Gifford, Oxfordshire - It was while living at Crowmarsh Gifford in Oxfordshire in the late 17th century that Jethro Tull invented the seed drill, a simple wheeled device used to plant seeds at regular intervals and depths. His invention paved the way for the agricultural revolution. 3. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk - Comprising a copper cylinder containing three gallons of potash solution, the first fire extinguisher was invented by Captain George Manby, Master of the Great Yarmouth Barracks, in 1813. Manby also invented a type of harpoon and a device for rescuing people who had fallen through ice. 4. Newtown, Powys - When the Welsh entrepreneur Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones began selling homemade Welsh flannel through the mail in the 1830s, he became the inventor of what is now mail-order shopping. His clients included Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale. 5. Stanhill, Lancashire - The spinning jenny was invented by James Hargreaves, a weaver working in Stanhill in Lancashire, in 1764. The device vastly increased the amount of yarn a single weaver could produce, and is considered one of the first developments of Britain’s industrial revolution. Beat the BBQ Bugs By Julia Faulks It’s even more important to be careful of food contamination if you’re pregnant, young, elderly, or have a chronic illness. If you’re worried about how well the food is cooking, then there’s nothing wrong with bringing your own meat to cook indoors first, to avoid it altogether, or stick to the safer food options instead.

Cooking raw meat safely

12

If reports are to be believed summer 2013 will not be quite the washout we experienced last year, which means it’s finally time to dust off our barbecues. Here’s how to make sure you don’t fall victim to food poisoning while dining al fresco… Once the person manning the BBQ has a bottle of beer in one hand and a fly swat in the other it can be all too easy to become complacent while trying to please hungry guests. When it comes to cooking outdoors and maintaining good food hygiene, it’s important to remember a few basic rules to keep those bugs away - and we’re not just talking about flies and midges. Warm weather is the perfect breeding ground for bugs such as E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter to grow, which can lead to nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and headaches.

When we cook raw meat on a BBQ it can be hard to tell if it’s actually cooked properly charred may be tasty, but that doesn’t mean it’s well done. There’s also a risk to your health if you spread germs from raw meat onto food that is ready to eat. It’s also worth remembering that just because chicken is hot on the outside, it doesn’t mean it’s safe, so make sure it’s not pink, the juices run clear and it’s steaming hot all the way through. BBQ fans also need to be careful when it comes to food bugs in side dishes. Coleslaw, mayonnaise and rice dishes are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria and are just as much of a risk when it comes to causing food poisoning. Follow these top 10 BBQ safety rules: 1. Wash your hands before you start cooking or preparing food and thoroughly after handling raw meat. 2. Cook meat first in the oven then put it on the BBQ to add to the flavour.

3. Use separate utensils for raw and cooked meat. 4. Keep plates or raw meat separate to cooked food. 5. Make sure the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking – this means that they are hot enough to cook on. If they are still flickering then it’s not quite ready. 6. Don’t cook meat from frozen – make sure it’s properly thawed beforehand. 7. Turn the meat regularly and move it around the BBQ to make sure it cooks evenly. 8. Don’t add sauces or marinades to cooked food if it’s already been mixed with raw meat. 9. You can eat steaks and joints of beef or lamb (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked, but this does not include food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers. 10. Make sure that salads, dips, desserts, deli meats, sandwiches and cooked rice are not kept out of the fridge for any more than a couple of hours. Instead, keep them cool, covered, and out of the sun.

Self-Publishing Facts Everyone’s doing it, but what’s involved in self-publishing? James Smith @jsmithwriter

14

You’re packing your bags after two weeks in the sun, and with a few hours to spare before leaving for the airport, you finish the last few pages of that 500-page novel. It called itself a ‘thriller’, but it was more of a yawn than a page-turner, so you discretely leave it on the bedside dresser for the next holidaymaker to battle through. And a little later on the aircraft, you wonder: can I do better? Indeed, there are many writers doing better via the process of self-publishing. Some literary agents and publishers baulk at the notion of this disruptive new kid on the block stirring up trouble. But like the digital revolution in music, these intermediaries must adapt and innovate, or simply go out of business. Literary agents are no longer necessarily the gatekeepers to publishing success. The doors have opened for everyday people to reach the masses with their writing and recent established successes have proved that self-publishing is credible and here to stay. To start, you need access to a computer and the Internet and

be able to format your book for upload to a publishing website. This may sound quite technical, but there is plenty of information and help available, and you can always ask friends, relatives or even freelancers to do the job for you. Good material No matter how wonderful or ground-breaking your idea, you must present it as a wellwritten story with a good structure in order to give you the best chance of success. Hone the craft of writing to your best ability; this will afford you respect amongst your readership. As with all creative endeavours, you will be open to the critics, so at least tackle the technical side of writing to deter them from attacking you on a basic level. There are many websites and books providing excellent advice on how to improve your writing, and it’s vital to keep learning. Read widely and write continually to improve. ‘The Elements of Style’ by Strunk and White is a brief and humorous read that will whip your writing into shape so that you can forge ahead with renewed confidence.

Proofreading and editing Ask people outside of your circle of friends and family to read and comment on your work. It’s not easy to invite opinion, but just watch how views differ. You may, however, discover a consistent thread within their comments from which you can learn and adjust the prose accordingly. One of the wisest investments is to hire an experienced proofreader to check for grammatical and typing errors, and to provide editing suggestions on style. The extent to which the proofreader is involved creatively can be decided between you, but just remember that the biggest self-publishing blunder of them all is not having your work proofread. There are many freelance services available on the Internet, so do some research and obtain a number of estimates from the professionals. Formatting Once you have the manuscript on your computer in a program such as Microsoft Word, you will need to have it formatted for upload to a site like Kindle Direct Publishing

(KDP) or Smashwords. There are guidelines on these websites, and books that you can download free of charge, explaining the step-by-step process to add the relevant headings, copyright notices and table of contents to your files. It’s very important that the formatting is correct and there are freelance professionals that will oblige for a small fee.

Publishing When your material is ready, you can upload and publish. The KDP and Smashwords sites enable you to prepare your material in the form of a draft via a ‘dashboard’, and when you’re ready, you can then set your price for various territories around the globe and submit it for publication. The book and cover is checked for quality, and within 24 hours, released to the world on many websites and online stores. Subsequently, you may find that your book requires amendments or revisions, and this is all neatly handled by the online system.

Designing the cover Many excellent self-published books are let down by poor covers. Unless you are a graphic designer and have a talent for this type of work, then hire someone who can represent your work professionally. Often the cover is the first thing people will see on the Internet, so it must shine above the abundant competition.

you can be proud. People of all backgrounds and ages are self-publishing, so if you have a great story, be sure to put it out to the world. Links kdp.amazon.com www.smashwords.com www.writersandartists.co.uk

There is much to learn, but this quick-fire guide will hopefully inspire you to put pen to paper - or fingers to keyboards - to produce a book of which

Life Begins Does everybody need good neighbours?

16

In search of a radical change of lifestyle, my partner and I recently moved from the secluded, detached town house where we had lived for fifteen years to a tiny terraced cottage in a village street. One of the greatest contrasts between the old life and the new was that we found ourselves completely surrounded by neighbours. It soon became clear to us that our street was blessed with a particularly strong community spirit. As soon as we arrived, several people knocked on our door to welcome us to the neighbourhood and we received a number of drinks invitations. As the old song goes: “That’s when neighbours become good friends.” Or is it? Although we enjoyed all this social interaction, as time passed the things we learned about our neighbours’ personalities made us wonder whether we would be wise to hold back a little… There was Marianne (or “Saint Marianne” as we subsequently named her) whose chief mission in life was to save the neighbourhood from degenerating into urban chaos:

drop a sweet wrapper in the road and she’d be out there with her bin bag and rubber gloves. Then there was Sandra, the Santa Claus of the gardening world, who would drop round with gifts of various cuttings and plants. However, her visits were inevitably followed by anxious requests for us to deal with our dandelions before their seeds spread to her garden. Billy was the jolliest neighbour on the street, but when he’d had a couple of pints at the local pub he would feel inspired to sing opera at the top of his voice. Then there was Maggie with her chickens and Joe with his tendency to tell off-colour jokes whenever his wife was out of earshot. We liked them all, of course – but our former lives had not prepared us to live within such close proximity to other people. Were we really cut out for community life? We called on some old friends for advice. Our research turned up a variety of viewpoints. Some treated their neighbours as an extension of their own families, whereas others simply exchanged pleasantries over

By Kate McLelland

the garden fence. Others told us chilling stories about noisy parties, barking dogs, overgrown trees, unregulated extensions – all delivered in a tone which suggested: “You watch out – it could happen to you.” We are all vulnerable when it comes to antisocial behaviour, but useful guidance is available from the Citizens Advice Bureau, who offer a handy guide entitled “Neighbour Disputes” (www. adviceguide.org.uk). Here you’ll also find contact details for Environmental Protection UK, who publish an excellent series of leaflets on dealing with noise pollution. Web forums are full of tales about “Neighbours from Hell” and it’s a sobering experience to read how badly things can go wrong when territorial disputes arise. Strangely enough, however, it was those very horror stories that provided the greatest reassurance to us in relation to our own neighbours. In spite of all their small eccentricities we agreed that we were lucky to share our street with such a group of community-minded individuals: they not only added colour and character to the neighbourhood, they worked hard to make sure that it remained an attractive place to live. The kind of place, in fact, that even cynical old ‘townies’ like us might be proud to call home.

“With reference to my recent treatment at Woodbury Dental and Implant Clinic with Dr V J Vadgama, I have had a full mouth restoration. You undertook the top arch treatment including tooth extraction, bone grafting to both sinus and dental implant placement. I am delighted with the results. I talk, smile and eat as if I have natural teeth. The treatment involved no pain, just minor discomfort. Your chair side manner was exemplary.” Mrs A.K.L (Canterbury)

I am also an ex-military ary policeman serving in Egypt, Palestine Pa and the e Sudan from 1947 to 1950, then a London bobby until joining the he CID at Scotland Yard, Ya in the famous Flying Squad, d, or “Sweeney“ as a known by the criminal minal fraternity, y, being active on the Great Train Robbery. During nine operations from 1994, I have had open heart surgery, when metallic heart valves were fitted, and a by-pass carried out, and numerous replacement parts installed, to such an extent, that I can jokingly say, “ There is very little left of the original me.” Then of course the throat cancer, caused by a lifetime of smoking, when the the vocal cords had to go sadly. But eventually a speaking valve was installed and I learnt to speak again. I spend a lot of time with people who have throat cancer, before their operation, where they think they are going to die, to give them confidence that they will survive and learn to speak again. That there is life after cancer. I hope you enjoy my work. www.the speechlesspoet.co.uk email: speechlesspoet@hotmail.co.uk.

A Mothers Love Love usually has conditions, in one way, or another, but no conditions do exist, between a child, and its mother. From long before, the day of birth, they form such natural bonds. That love a mother always gives, and the way the babe responds. Just see them when they are ar together, and imagine them apart. No other love’s quite like it, it can melt the hardest heart. hear The love between a mother mothe and child, is impossible possible to exp explain. It ‘s just a simple fact of life, and will always be th same the same.

A Thought h For The T Day Don’t put off until tomorrow, tomorrow things that should be done today. Cos’ cruel fate could step right rig in, away. and d steal t l your chance h away Don’t put off until, some other time, the things you need to say. You never know if there will be, the chance of another day. Don’t wait to say, “ I love you,” till your voice may not be heard. or whispered into frail ears, who cannot understand your words. So cradle one anothers hearts, don’t let the feeling slip. Through good and bad times, cling on, don’t lose the loving grip. Look warmly in each others eyes, whilst still the chance is there. Be thankful for each other, and the pleasures that you share. By Len A.Hynds Next time I find my self feeling discouraged about life’s ups and downs, I will think of Len, what an inspiration he is. Misconceptions About Wills As part of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson of Tenterden law firm Pengelly & Rylands looks at common misconceptions about Wills. Q Can an Executor benefit under a Will? A Yes, an Executor can benefit from a Will but they or their spouse or civil partner must not be one of the two witnesses when the person making the Will signs it. Q My family know what I want, do I need a Will? A Without a Will, your family will lack the power to make important decisions. They will be bound by what the law dictates about such things as how to administer your affairs, who will get your assets, when they will get them and who will have legal authority to look after your children.

22

Q My family is very close, they won’t argue over money. Do I need to be specific in my Will? A In these austere times, more and more families are contesting Wills. Grief and money are not a good combination and will bring out strong emotions. The clearer you are about how you want your affairs handled after your death, the less chance there should be for costs of litigation and disputes which can destroy family relationships (and see the estate swallowed up in legal costs). Q Will all my assets pass under my Will? A No. Assets which are in joint names such as bank accounts automatically pass to the joint owner on the first death, even though they may have made no contribution to the money in the account. Accounts are sometimes put into joint names for practical reasons, e.g. an elderly parent and an adult child. Although the account may pass automatically to the child, the share provided by the parent will be added to the parent’s estate in calculating if any tax is due. Q Is a homemade Will kit enough? A In many cases, homemade Wills create more work for lawyers but are not good for beneficiaries who could wait many months or even years to receive their entitlement.

Rosalind Johnson, Senior Partner Q Does having a Will avoid probate? A No. A Will is the primary tool of the probate system. A Will is like a letter to the Probate Court telling it how you want your property distributed and who is to deal with it – your Executors. In small estates, or when assets are held jointly, it is not always necessary to apply for probate. It very much depends on individual circumstances. Q Does my Will and the gross net value of my assets remain private? A No, once probate is granted, a Will becomes a public record. This means nosey friends or

neighbours can apply to the Probate Registry for a copy of your Will to know the size of your estate and who benefits. The only people whose Wills cannot be made public are the Royal Family!

Q With no Will, does my property go to the state? A No. Without a Will, you will die intestate and the intestacy rules say who will receive your assets. So called “common law”, husbands and wives have no entitlement and if they need provision from your estate for a child of the relationship, or themselves, they would have to apply to the Court to decide what, if anything, was “fair and reasonable” provision. There is a limited time without the Court’s consent to bring any claim.

“We have been watching the new building take shape for a number of months now and are delighted to have finally moved in to the first floor offices” said Mr. Monckton.

Whitehead Monckton’s New Tenterden Office Launch Party Over 120 clients and professional connections helped Whitehead Monckton, one of Kent’s 24 longest-established law firms celebrate the opening of their new offices in the Market Square in Tenterden. On a sunny yet slightly breezy evening guests were able to join the partners in the square for a drinks reception and to have a guided tour of the new offices. Guests were treated to canapés from local caterer Mama Feelgoods, a winner in the Taste of Kent Awards, wine from Chapel Down and the Gusbourne Estate, and apple and pear juice from Robert Mitchell’s farm – a client of the firm. A quartet of players from the Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra provided lively background music to the event. Led by Whitehead Monckton Partner Tim Monckton, the team will feature specialists in a number of fields including commercial and property law and private client work. Daniel Bennett, a partner in the Family team and chair of Resolution in Kent, will also be based in the new office.

“We’re now perfectly placed to serve both existing and new clients and to provide them with advice that is expert, practical and costeffective. With improved facilities for meetings and seminars, we look forward to welcoming many clients and professional connections to the new building.” Whitehead Monckton, which is one of the largest law firms in Kent, has other offices in Maidstone and Canterbury. It offers legal services to both individual and business clients and also has a Wealth Management team providing an in-house financial planning service. Our focus is on really listening to our clients, understanding their issues and delivering the legal services they need.

Your Will is probably the biggest ‘cheque’ you’ll ever write! When you’re writing a big cheque for a car or a house, it pays to get expert advice. The same applies to your Will. It needs to be a bespoke document, drafted by an experienced lawyer to ensure your assets are distributed as you wish and in the most tax efficient way. Whitehead Monckton solicitors are recognised for their expertise and approachability, and for providing good value legal advice. If you don’t have a Will – now is the time to discuss your wishes. If you have a Will – does it reflect your wishes and in a tax efficient way? We can review your current Will at no charge before recommending any changes.

© Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

wit & wisdom

The other night I was invited out for a night with the ‘girls.’ I told my husband that I would be home by midnight , ‘I promise!’ Well, the hours passed and the Margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.

The next morning, my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him ‘ MIDNIGHT .’ He didn’t seem annoyed in the least. Phew, I got away with that one! Then he said ‘We need a new cuckoo clock.’ When I asked him why, he said, ‘Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times... then said, ‘oh, crap...

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him! (Even when totally smashed... three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos-- MIDNIGHT !)

Del & Peeps Peeps urgently needed a few days off work, but knew the boss wouldn’t allow any leave. So he thought “maybe if I acted “Crazy” the boss would tell me to take a few days off”. So he proceeded to hang upside-down from the ceiling and made funny noises. His co-worker, Del, asked him what he was doing, he said “ I’m pretending to be a light bulb, so that the boss thinks I‘ve gone “Crazy” and gives me a few days off. A few minutes later the boss came into the office. “What on earth are you doing?” he said to Peeps. Peeps said “I’m a light bulb”. The boss said, “You’re clearly stressed out, go home and recuperate for a couple of days.” Peeps jumped down and walked out of the office.... But when Del followed him the boss said “...And where do you think you’re going?!” Del said, “I’m going home too. I can’t work in the dark..”
