Brings Print to Life Last month I announced that The Village Directory is about to come to life and make its printed pages interactive and clickable, well its here! By downloading an app called Layar to your smartphone you are now able to scan the pages of the magazine and access clickable buttons for all our advertisers and view additional images and, in some cases, video.

These are all clickable, just as they would be if you were on a website. For now most of these buttons will allow you to either phone an advertiser or go to their website, but they can be programmed to do much more. Video and photo galleries can be included to support editorial content, go to page 8, scan the page and watch a video of the resent Darling Buds of May Car Show. It’s all very futuristic and fun!

Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful weather, the magazine can be a real challenge though when the office turns into a sauna at deadline time. Luckily I don’t overlook the sea, so there’s no likelihood of me suddenly making a dash for a cooling dip, like my husband did last month! By the way, one reader said that she had to look twice, apparently his cream trousers gave the impression that he was “starkers”, she did make me laugh! You have to feel sorry for my family, if they do anything noteworthy the whole borough is likely to find out about it! I had a call from a very nice gentleman in the Woodchurch area the other day. He is faily new to the area and was struggling to locate local B&B accomodation for his visiting family. Unfortunately I was unable to help him but it made me think. If enough B&B’s are interested in listing their businesses in the magazine I would be happy to set up a dedicated section. So if you run a B&B and are interested do get in touch, if it’s viable I will get too work on it right away. Our summer weather isn’t usually unbearably warm; in fact it is often pretty cool and a little bit of extra heat would be very welcome. With a little bit of planning and some careful planting, you could turn your garden into the hottest site out, regardless of the real weather. All you have to do is plant beds, borders or containers full of hot reds, screaming yellows and glowing oranges. Even if much of your garden is already in place, you can always add to it, even at this time of year. True, most of the planting is best done in the autumn, but a visit to a garden centre or nursery in late summer will reveal a fabulous display of plants which can be put to good use in your garden now. Many summer flowering plants are starting to decline at this time of year, but you will find that some of the late summer and autumn plantings have the richest, brightest and hottest colours. For real energy and vibrancy,
choose plenty of yellows and golds, including some of the golden rods (Solidago), which should be flowering well into September. They are not difficult to grow and if you choose a variety like ‘Crown of Rays’, it will grow to just over 2 feet (60cm) tall and yet does not need staking. I am a great fan of coreopsis, including the various forms of Coreopsis verticillata, which again flowers well into the autumn and is unlikely to need staking. If you like to see flat looking flower heads in your garden then take a closer peep at some of the achilleas, including ‘Coronation Gold’ and you will find that this too helps to attract many beneficial insects into the garden. No late summer border is complete without the cone flowers or rudbekias with their deliciously bright, daisylike flowers - these should last you through until October. For some screaming scarlets
and other shades of red, consider growing the dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Lychnis chalcedonica. All of these rich reds look particularly good amongst or close to some of the yellows. A real favourite of mine, combining both rich red or shades of orange and sometimes yellow, are the red-hot pokers. Providing the soil is fairly moist and they receive plenty of sun, these really do add a hot statement. In damper areas you could use Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ or many of the other moistureloving types of lobelia which produce huge spires of red flowers, so different from those tiny blue, pink and white bedding lobelias which are more widely grown. To make sure that your summer time plantings do well, take heed of the following tips: • If it is a hot day, try to plant in early evening or at least late afternoon when the main heat of the sun has died down.
the garden • Always make sure that plants are really well watered before you put them in the ground. • Soak the compost thoroughly and make sure that it is wetted right the way down to the base before you begin. • Incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter, such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or some proprietary compost from your garden centre, as this will help to retain moisture. • Once the plants are in position, water them in really thoroughly. A light sprinkling won’t do – the water needs to go right down to where the plant needs it, at its roots. • Once the soil is moist, apply a good, deep mulch of 2 – 3 inches (5 – 7.5 cm), all around the soil surface. This will help to keep moisture in, protect the plant roots from the heat of the sun and at the same time keep weeds at bay. Don’t forget to tend to your hot border again in the autumn, when you will find small versions of many of these plants readily available in garden centres, often at only a couple of pounds per pot and when you will also be able to plant some more warming oranges and reds using bulbs and corms. The Speechless Poet My name is Len Hynds and I am an ancient Laryngectomee, that is a person who survived throat cancer but lost my vocal cords in the process. I speak now with an artificial device implanted in the throat, and talk normally although rather robotic. I went to College before the device was fitted, to speed up my only method of communication, that of writing, and on advice went on to Canterbury University and graduated three years later in Creative Writing, Poetry and Writing for Stage and Screen. at the age of 78.

I am now 83 years old and a widower. I am also an ex-military policeman serving in Egypt, Palestine and the Sudan from 1947 to 1950, then a London bobby until joining the CID at Scotland Yard, in the famous Flying Squad, or “Sweeney“ as known by the criminal fraternity, being active on the Great Train Robbery. Then running my own company supplying car parts to the car repair industry where I worked until 74. During nine operations from 1994, I have had open heart surgery, when metallic heart valves were fitted, and a by-pass carried out, and numerous replacement parts installed, to such an extent, that I can jokingly say, “ There is very little left of the original me.” Then of course the throat cancer, caused by a lifetime of smoking, when the the vocal cords had to go sadly. But eventually a speaking valve was installed and I learnt to speak again. I spend a lot of time with people who have throat cancer, before their operation, where they think they are going to die, to give them confidence that they will survive and learn to speak again. A Mothers Love Love usually has conditions, in one way, or another, but no conditions do exist, between a child, and its mother. From long before, the day of birth, they form such natural bonds. That love a mother always gives, and the way the babe responds. Just see them when they are together, and imagine them apart. No other love’s quite like it, it can melt the hardest heart. The love between a mother and child, is impossible to explain. It ‘s just a simple fact of life, and will always be the same.
A Thought For The Day Don’t put off until tomorrow, things that should be done today. Cos’ cruel fate could step right in, and steal your chance away. Don’t put off until, some other time, the things you need to say. You never know if there will be, the chance of another day. Don’t wait to say, “ I love you,” till your voice may not be heard. or whispered into frail ears, who cannot understand your words. So cradle one anothers hearts, don’t let the feeling slip. Through good and bad times, cling on, don’t lose the loving grip. Look warmly in each others eyes, whilst still the chance is there. Be thankful for each other, and the pleasures that you share. Serves 8
Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert. They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive.

175g self-raising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced 55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk

125g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar 6 tbsp single cream 175g fresh raspberries 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced
Tip The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden. Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree. Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries. Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves.

Eggs & Butter Health Hazards or Essential to Life? “Saturated fats and cholesterol are not the cause of coronary heart disease. That myth is the greatest scientific deception of this century.” Dr George V Mann Did you know breast milk is loaded with saturated fats which are necessary to provide a naturally perfected source of nourishment to ensure the growth, development and survival of your infants? Mankind has depended on eating saturated fat for its very survival, so what is all the fuss regarding saturated fat, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease?

First let’s look at the facts concerning cholesterol – every cell in our bodies need cholesterol which is produced by the liver and adrenal glands. Cholesterol is integral in the production of our sex and stress hormones required for reproduction, growth, repair and responses to stress. Cholesterol also functions as a powerful antioxidant, thus protecting us against cancer and aging, and is the precursor to vitamin D, necessary for numerous biochemical processes. Cholesterol is also vital to proper neurological function. It plays a key role in the formation of memory and the uptake of hormones in the brain, including serotonin, the body’s feel-good chemical. When cholesterol levels drop too low, the serotonin receptors cannot work which can result in problems with mood amongst other things. The liver regulates levels of cholesterol in the blood and maintaining the correct balance requires an abundant source of essential vitamins and minerals, the best origin of course is through a good diet made up of natural foods and foods that are cultivated naturally. Dr William Kannel, director of the long term US Framlington study on heart disease concluded that there was ‘no discernable association between the amount of cholesterol in the diet and level of cholesterol in the blood, regardless of how much or how little animal fat in the diet’.
Man - made fats (trans - fats) on the other hand will suppress the immune system, cause cell membranes to rupture, disrupt cell and body function and are major contributing factors in heart disease and cancer. In the days before margarine was manufactured (and did you know that margarine lives forever?) when butter and lard were part of our diets, heart disease was minimal, now it’s a major cause of death. Also cancer rates were much lower than they were today. Man - made fats cause levels of cholesterol and other fats to change from what is normal and essential for good health. Many foods on our super market shelves now contain man- made trans-fats and it is these that cause the problems with health NOT the natural foods with high cholesterol such as eggs and butter. Eggs contain vital nutrients to help the liver regulate cholesterol levels in the blood. In saying that, there are eggs and there are eggs. Eggs that have been cultivated from caged chickens, chickens living in artificial light, or those that have been pumped full of steroids and antibiotics and given inferior food pellets, cannot be considered a natural food cultivated naturally and are therefore not healthy. Good eggs are produced by free range chickens in natural light scratching for food, raised in a chemically free environment. Butter is infinitely better for you than margarine. Margarine is completely artificial and is made through hydrogenation, winterisation, bleaching and refinement. During the process, products such as nickel, aluminium, hydrogen gas, benzoate dyes, colouring, and artificial flavours are just some of the things added. Does that sound like a healthy alternative to butter and the proclaimed saviour from heart disease to you? Finally here’s the real stick in the eye... cholesterol and the ‘business’ of lowering cholesterol is a multi billion pound industry. Think about it. So, go and enjoy the foods the nature has given us and don’t be fooled into believing ‘pretend food’ is good for you!! Q Can an Executor benefit under a Will? A Yes, an Executor can benefit from a Will but they or their spouse or civil partner must not be one of the two witnesses when the person making the Will signs it. Q My family know what I want, do I need a Will? A Without a Will, your family will lack the power to make important decisions. They will be bound by what the law dictates about such things as how to administer your affairs, who will get your assets, when they will get them and who will have legal authority to look after your children. Q My family is very close, they won’t argue over money. Do I need to be specific in my Will?

A In these austere times, more and more families are contesting Wills. Grief and money are not a good combination and will bring out strong emotions. The clearer you are about how you want your affairs handled after your death, the less chance there should be for costs of litigation and disputes which can destroy family relationships (and see the estate swallowed up in legal costs). Q Will all my assets pass under my Will? A No. Assets which are in joint names such as bank accounts automatically pass to the joint owner on the first death, even though they may have made no contribution to the money in the account. Accounts are sometimes put into joint names for practical reasons, e.g. an elderly parent and an adult child. Although the account may pass automatically to the child, the share provided by the parent will be added to the parent’s estate in calculating if any tax is due. Q Is a homemade Will kit enough? A In many cases, homemade Wills create more work for lawyers but are not good for beneficiaries who could wait many months or even years to receive their entitlement.

A Will is like a letter to the Probate Court telling it how you want your property distributed and who is to deal with it – your Executors. Life Begins Does everybody need good neighbours?

In search of a radical change of lifestyle, my partner and I recently moved from the secluded, detached town house where we had lived for fifteen years to a tiny terraced cottage in a village street. One of the greatest contrasts between the old life and the new was that we found ourselves completely surrounded by neighbours. It soon became clear to us that our street was blessed with a particularly strong community spirit. As soon as we arrived, several people knocked on our door to welcome us to the neighbourhood and we received a number of drinks invitations. As the old song goes: “That’s when neighbours become good friends.” Or is it? Although we enjoyed all this social interaction, as time passed the things we learned about our neighbours’ personalities made us wonder whether we would be wise to hold back a little… There was Marianne (or “Saint Marianne” as we subsequently named her) whose chief mission in life was to save the neighbourhood from degenerating into urban chaos:
drop a sweet wrapper in the road and she’d be out there with her bin bag and rubber gloves. Then there was Sandra, the Santa Claus of the gardening world, who would drop round with gifts of various cuttings and plants. However, her visits were inevitably followed by anxious requests for us to deal with our dandelions before their seeds spread to her garden. Billy was the jolliest neighbour on the street, but when he’d had a couple of pints at the local pub he would feel inspired to sing opera at the top of his voice. Then there was Maggie with her chickens and Joe with his tendency to tell off-colour jokes whenever his wife was out of earshot. We liked them all, of course – but our former lives had not prepared us to live within such close proximity to other people. Were we really cut out for community life? We called on some old friends for advice. Our research turned up a variety of viewpoints. Some treated their neighbours as an extension of their own families, whereas others simply exchanged pleasantries over

the garden fence. Others told us chilling stories about noisy parties, barking dogs, overgrown trees, unregulated extensions – all delivered in a tone which suggested: “You watch out – it could happen to you.” We are all vulnerable when it comes to antisocial behaviour, but useful guidance is available from the Citizens Advice Bureau, who offer a handy guide entitled “Neighbour Disputes” (www. adviceguide.org.uk). Here you’ll also find contact details for Environmental Protection UK, who publish an excellent series of leaflets on dealing with noise pollution. Web forums are full of tales about “Neighbours from Hell” and it’s a sobering experience to read how badly things can go wrong when territorial disputes arise. Strangely enough, however, it was those very horror stories that provided the greatest reassurance to us in relation to our own neighbours. In spite of all their small eccentricities we agreed that we were lucky to share our street with such a group of community-minded individuals: they not only added colour and character to the neighbourhood, they worked hard to make sure that it remained an attractive place to live. The kind of place, in fact, that even cynical old ‘townies’ like us might be proud to call home.
