Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the last edition of 2018. Christmas is coming and a new year is on the horizon, I hope you’re all organised. For me Christmas is not just about spending time with family, but also having a wellearned break away from the pressures of print deadlines and staring at computer screens for hours on end. These days a large part of my Christmas shopping is done online, but that means even more hours of screen time spent! We live in an age where very few of us can get away from staring at screens, I may soon have to put corrective eye surgery on my Christmas list as I’m now shuffling glasses like a pack of cards! I still love going to the high street for some of my Christmas shopping, taking in the atmosphere, stopping for lunch somewhere, and then struggling home at the end of the day with bags containing something for everyone (wishful thinking!). These days the high street is suffering as result of internet shopping, but it’s all about the physical experience, maybe it just needs to change a little. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of this magazine and of all our advertisers. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. I’m now off to watch a good old fashioned musical on TV (more screen time!), by the fire with a nice glass of red wine, Cheers! See you in 2019.

BRABOURNE BAPTIST CHURCH
Plain Road, Brabourne Lees, Kent TN25 6QN
A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers!
Report of Parish Council Meeting, 12 Nov. The Chairman congratulated and thanked all those
involved with the commemorations of the First World War in the parishes. Particular mention was made of the stunning poppies made by the schoolchildren and their teachers from their own handprints. Speed Indicator Device The speed indicator device in Aldington is already providing interesting and useful information on average speeds and traffic flows, and their causes. These data will be analysed and can help to inform comments on future planning applications. Ashford Borough Council (ABC) Local Plan The Parish Council submitted written comments for ABC’s consultation on the Main Modifications to the Local Plan 2030. The Plan is expected to be adopted next year. Village ‘Confines’ Exercise ABC wishes to define the built ‘confines’ of Aldington village in the context of policies within the proposed new Local Plan and to do this very quickly before the Plan is adopted. These ‘confines’ will provide informal guidance for determining planning applications where the relationship of a proposed development to the existing built environment is relevant. The Parish Council are keen to hear residents views on this and have arranged to hold a consultation evening on Thursday 6th December in the Village Hall from 7.30pm. Next Meeting: Mon. 10 Dec., 7.30pm, at Aldington Eco Centre, Goldwell Lane. Parish Council Carols: Sat. 15 Dec., 5.30pm in the village hall. Full minutes of parish council meetings are available on the website: www.ald-bonnpc.kentparishes.gov.uk Parish Council Contact: Peter Setterfield, Clerk, 01233 721757 clerk@ald-bonnpc.kentparishes.gov.uk

Got a New Device? Here’s the essential tech prep you can’t afford to skip
Season’s greetings to everyone I’m Gary from Flag Computer Repair. Its great fun getting a new device at any time of the year but especially at Christmas. Once you get it home though, there are several things that need to be done before it’s really usable – beyond snazzing it up with a new case or mousepad. Security Updates and Fixes From the factory to your hands, that device has been in the box for at least a month. In the world of security, that’s an eternity. During that time on the shelf, new viruses have come out and new software weaknesses have been discovered. Fortunately, new updates to combat these problems were also created, they just haven’t been downloaded to your device yet. Data Transfer From Old to New You can either transfer your data entirely or just the things you use. For computers, you can even turn your old hard drive into an external drive that you can plug into your new computer and grab files as required. The best way to protect yourself from hackers, virus’s and data loss is to have a backup. Windows and Apple computers have backup software, but you must set it up and monitor it. I offer a managed backup service where I take all the hassle out of maintaining your backups. Setting up Hardware If your new device is a computer, you’ll need to hook it up to extra tech like a printer or webcam. These tasks that should be plug-and-play can sometimes send you loopy, especially when you’ve got a plug mismatch or incompatible drivers. 8
Setting up Email and Software This is one people commonly forget and then struggle with. Email programs in particular, need special configuration to connect properly. I find people are stuck only able to receive, with overflowing unsent mail that won’t go anywhere!
Passwords Have a system or template for creating your own unique passwords that you’ can remember. For example: <character> <word> <something about the site> <numbers> <character> Becomes !K1ttyFB75! It might seem complicated, but the above is really just based around the words ‘kitty’ and ‘FB’ for Facebook. Change the FB to something else for other sites. Need help. Give me a call at 07976 151 148 and I'll get your new device up and running.

Home & Interiors Create a comfortable guest room
By Katherine Sorrell
and check you have enough bed linen. Bedside tables are useful to store a book, a glass of water, a phone and a pair of glasses, and a folding tray table, a small chair, a stool or just an upturned wooden crate will all be fine. Soft rugs beside the bed and prints on the walls are a lovely enhancement.
Spare room mattress, £345, Loaf: 020 3141 8300; www.loaf.com.
Is your spare room ready for Christmas? Our guide will ensure your guests feel completely at home. Hosting family or friends during the festive season can be as stressful as it is heart-warming, so it is best to prepare well in advance. First, check the spare bedroom, and if it is full of clutter then sell, give or tidy away as much as possible. Create enough space in wardrobes and drawers for guests to unpack their clothes – or at least store your stuff neatly and leave them a few hangers on a hook on the back of the door. If the room is too hot or too cold, address issues such as windows that are stuck or radiators that don’t work – if necessary, plug in a small standalone heater. Draw the curtains in daylight to check whether they adequately block early-morning light, and consider adding blackout lining for curtains or fitted blackout blinds. As well as a clean and clutter-free room, there are key elements that will really enhance your guests’ comfort. First, how is the mattress? If it has seen better days, a topper or enhancer can help. Have duvets and pillows dry cleaned,
10
Additional pillows and blankets will be welcome, as will a hair dryer, a full-length mirror and a waste paper basket. A spare dressing gown is useful, especially if the room doesn’t have an en suite bathroom. Add an extension lead or an adaptor for charging phones and other devices, and provide your router’s name and password on a small card. If you don’t have a spare bedroom, a sofa bed, day bed, futon, bed-in-a-box or good quality airbed in the living room will all be fine, but clear away as much as possible so your guests have room to put down their luggage, and place a small lamp near the head of their ‘bed’ and a spare throw or blanket. A box, bag or basket into which they can stow bedding during the day will also help keep things tidy, while a note on the door will make sure they are not interrupted before they get up in the morning. Finally, think about the little extras that will make your guests’ stay a five-star experience. Suggestions include an alarm clock, a pen and paper, a carafe of water with matching glass, some books or magazines, a hot water bottle, a sprig of flowers in a bud vase and a scented candle or diffuser. With such care and forethought, your guests are sure to be delighted – and will soon be back to stay again.

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets
H
ello everyone, Mowgli here! Ebony and I can’t believe that it is nearly Christmas again! It is nearly time to find out if we have been good enough for Santa Paws to come. I have to admit that I am a bit sceptical about Santa Paws- I have a tendency to be a bit mischievous (hard to believe I know…..) but I always seem to get plenty of Christmas presents. Do you think that he knows that my heart is in the right place? This year I have been very good. Well, mostly very good. There is the small ongoing issue of Jane’s rug but I hope that Santa Paws will see beyond all that and that he will leave me plenty of catnip mice and dreamies. Ebony and I just love dreamies!
O
ne of the other good things about Christmas is choosing presents for our feline friends. Ebony and I always take this very seriously and ask Clive to bring home a whole selection so we can choose carefully. This of course entails some serious playing, chewing and chasing of lots of nice catnip and feathered things. Then of course we get to keep the toys we have tried and Clive has to order more- works every year......
W
H
ope you all have a wonderful Christmas and I will write again in the New Year and let you know how we are getting on with our resolutions. I can feel my paws starting to tingle already at the thought of how lovely it is to scratch that rug.....

AT THE EVEGATE CENTRE SMEETH, ASHFORD
e have noticed that this year there are several schemes about to fill a shoebox full of food and treats for homeless cats and dogs. Ebony and I are doing this and we are planning all kinds of things like catnip mice, fleecy blankets and deli-dreamies (these are even better than normal ones…..). We think it is a great idea to remember those cats (and dogs- I guess I should be generous as it is Christmas….) who don’t have their own warm bed to curl up on.

have also been thinking about my New Year resolutions. I think I might have to resolve to sharpen my claws on the rug a little less often. I

think I have made this resolution every year for the last 5 years…….. and I expect Ebony will have to make her usual resolution of going on a diet. I wonder if humans repeatedly make the same New Year resolutions too?

Gardening Get Fit And Garden!
by Pippa Greenwood
nothing like some time in the garden to clear your head, get the blood moving around your body and wear off a bit of the seasonal excesses. Fresh, cool air will wake you up and get you thinking positively, and your garden will appreciate what you do – plus you may also manage to escape from anyone who’s driving you round the bend. So jump to it and get out in the garden or down to the allotment.
It’s been great to have a bit of a slow-down , but if, like me, you’ve done a bit too much slowing down, have been lazing about and perhaps eaten a little more than you should, then now’s the time to jump into action! There’s
A rake over with a springtined rake will be just what the lawn needs to remove damp, clogged-up leaves that, if left in place, will cause patches of faded, miserable grass. It’ll be good for the upper arm muscles too! Make sure that you collect and bag up all the leaves, and allow them to rot down and make leaf mould, a brilliant and
free soil conditioner. If the soil in cleared areas is sufficiently dry, take the opportunity to fork it over – this will help the frosts to break up heavier clay soils. It will also expose lurking grubs and other soil pests, giving the birds a useful snack and helping you to minimise pest problems next year. If the soil is not too wet, you can get some digging done too, but make sure you limber up well before you start. Keeping your back straight and your knees bent helps to reduce the risk of back injury and strains – but take it gently! Winter is a good time to carry out pruning of apple and pear trees. Make sure your secateurs are good and sharp and start by removing dead, dying and diseased branches, as well as
LIMBER UP! After a bit too much time inside, and especially when the weather is cold, it’s easy to do yourself a bit of damage when you suddenly spring into action. Make sure you: • Wear plenty of clothing when you go outside – have lots of layers and remove them gradually as you warm up. • Do a few gentle limbering-up exercises before you start work to slowly loosen up your arms, legs and especially your back. • Don’t do any single task for too long – instead rotate the jobs, perhaps spending ten minutes on one thing, ten minutes on another, then ten on a third, and then go back to the first. This way you won’t put any one area of your body under too much strain. • Give yourself regular, short breaks and don’t forget to drink enough, especially once you start warming up! • Don’t forget to bend your knees when lifting and if in doubt call on a friend, relative or neighbour to give you a hand. You can always return the favour another time.

The Garden those that are causing the crown of the tree to be too congested. While the garden is not being used that much, take the opportunity to re-set any loose brick or similar edging around paths, beds and steps, replacing any stones, pavers or bricks that have broken or cracked. Carefully clear debris, dead foliage and stems from flower beds. Some plants that were still living when you did an autumn tidy may now have died back, so a simple clear up will make the bed look so much better. Remember not to go too far, and do leave some dry foliage and stems over the bases or crowns of plants, especially those of the more tender perennials such as penstemons. Smooth, hard surfaces in the garden such as patios, paths and steps can become really dangerous if algae and debris are allowed to build up on them over the winter. This layer may look insignificant but can become seriously slippery, especially when wet. A stiff brush or yard broom and plenty of elbow grease is the best solution I know. The combination of wet weather and extreme winds can cause a lot of shrubs and trees to become loosened in the soil. Use the heel of your foot to refirm the soil around the root area, checking that the plant is still in the soil at the right level, adjusting if necessary. You’re bound to feel better after all that air and exercise in your plot, but do take time to wrap up warm again and reward yourself with a nice cuppa while you sit and admire your handiwork – before heading inside for a nice hot bath! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items and perfect Christmas gifts for gardeners: a ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (great vegetable plants and weekly advice from Pippa), stylish cloches, the fantastic SpeedHoe, raised bed kits, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?

Sweet Recipe Christmas Mincemeat Slice This delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies.
Ingredients:
1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your
fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs).
• 225g plain flour • 165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced • 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water
2. Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough
on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4.
• 75g caster sugar • 300g good quality mincemeat • 50g ground almonds • 2 tbsp flaked almonds
Makes 12-14 slices Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
4. Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely.
5. Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices.
TIP
26
Add some finely chopped toasted hazelnuts or walnuts to the crumble topping for an extra nutty flavour.

Kent Fostering Service Kent Carers for Kent children There are over 1000 children living in foster care with our 700 Kent County Council fostering families. Our fostering families come from a wide variety of backgrounds which is needed because our children come from a range of backgrounds too Foster carers can be single, in a relationship, married, gay or straight, 18 years and over. Carers do not need to be home owners, but our carers do need a spare bedroom, have good physical and emotional health, energy, commitment, time, the motivation to make a real difference to a child’s life and previous experience of caring for or working with children and young people. The Kent Fostering Service particularly need homes for older children, brothers and sisters who need to stay together and disabled children (both long term and short breaks carers). Short breaks carers provide short term care for disabled children- training is provided to meet a child’s specific health and developmental needs. Some children and young people just need a short-term foster home whilst others need longer term homes and care until they are ready to live independently. Our young people deserve a sense of belonging to a family whilst also maintaining links with their birth family. Emergency bed carers and assessment bed carers are needed for children and young people with complex presenting behaviours for a time limited period whilst plans are made for the young person’s ongoing care. Kent need foster carers for parent and child placements, which requires a particular skill set where additional training can be provided to build upon existing skills.
Our children and young people Our Children and young people need caring families to meet their health, emotional, social and educational needs and to support them to develop a sense of identity and confidence in their own abilities. Many children are successfully returned home with their birth families whilst some children with more complex needs remain living with their foster family. Fostering with Kent County Council provides a paid career offering the choice to complete a variety of training courses up to diploma level. Kent foster carers are self-employed and earn from £264 to £446 per week (including a maintenance and reward element) with enhanced fees paid for children with higher level disabilities and additional needs and combined rates for parent and child placements. Foster carers receive generous tax relief (see HMRC) Kent Foster carers have their own fostering social worker, support groups, access to out of hours support , membership to Fostertalk, Kent Foster Carers Association, access to specialist services such as Kent’s Sense of belonging service (psychological outreach support and activity days for children ),Kent virtual schools, the Children and young people’s council and participation and appreciation events and all new carers have a foster carer buddy to offer guidance and support. The fostering assessment process takes 6-8 months. Kent information events provide an opportunity to learn more about fostering and meet our foster carers. For information please contact Kent’s initial enquiry team on 03000 420002 and visit our website www.kentfostering.co.uk or follow Kent fostering on Facebook .We can answer all questions and you can ask to speak with one of our foster carer ambassadors 31

Healthier Festive Food Swaps • • • After weeks of festive foodie temptations, it’s easy to start the New Year a few pounds heavier and feeling far from fit. But the alternative isn’t avoiding treats altogether: it’s choosing the swaps you can live with. BETTER BREAKFASTS SWAP a full English fried breakfast for the healthy version. Grill mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon, poach eggs, and choose lowsugar baked beans and a slice of wholemeal toast rather than hash browns. SWAP sugary cereals for a small portion of healthier cereals and add fresh berries and/or a dollop of low-fat yogurt. START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON If you must have a starter, keep it small and light. SWAP creamy soups or cheese laden dishes for: • A small prawn cocktail with fresh lettuce and a little low-fat dressing (if you must add bread, stick to half a slice of wholemeal). • A small fresh fruit cocktail – berries or a tropical mix. • A small bowl of cream-free soup. THE MAIN EVENT SWAP • Duck or goose for turkey or a lean cut of red meat. • Butter-basting your turkey for removing the skin (reducing the

calories by nearly a third and fat by more than half). Sausage meat for vegetarian sausage mix in stuffing. Goose fat or lard etc. for a low-fat vegetable-based oil or spray oil. Some of your roast potatoes for crispy jacket potatoes (not mash: the added milk and butter is its downfall). Roasted vegetables for steamed or microwaved ones.
YOUR JUST DESSERTS 113g (a quarter) of a standard Christmas pud usually has 375400 calories and 40-50g of sugar, although they are relatively low in fat. Fancy something healthier? Try 113g of: • Morrison’s Very Berry Strudel (287 calories, 18g sugar, 13g fat) • Asda Raspberry Tiramisu (257 calories, 25g sugar, 10g fat) • Sainsbury’s Mixed Berry Trifle Desert (171 calories, 21g sugar, 7g fat) SWAP • Ambrosia custard (98 calories, 11g sugar, 3g fat per 100g) • Elmlea double cream (351 calories, 4g sugar, 36g fat per 100ml) for • Sainsbury’s low-fat yogurt (62 calories, 7g of sugar, 1g fat per 100g) TIME FOR TEA SWAP: • Traditional mince pies for lattices, filo parcels or open-top versions. • Breaded or battered snacks for marinated savouries or homemade herby snacks. • Rich, creamy dips for low-fat or tomato-based versions.
• Crisps, salted nuts and chocolate for plain popcorn, rice cakes, pretzels, unsalted nuts and homemade chocolatecovered fruit (dark chocolate is healthier). RAISE YOUR GLASS – NOT YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE Alcohol is usually high in sugar and calories and recent research has shown there’s no ‘safe’ consumption limit (leading to the Government reducing men’s ‘recommended’ limit to 14 units in line with women). Consider swapping 175ml glasses of some alcoholic drinks for these delicious alternatives. Bollinger champagne (133 calories) for • Shloer Sparkling White Grape Juice (53 calories) • J2O Spritz watermelon (35 calories) Dry River Pinot Grigio (158 calories) for: • Kedem Natural Grape Juice (88 calories) • Welch’s White Grape, Pear and Apple Juice (35 calories) Echo Falls Merlot (125 calories) for: • Asda Grape, Apple and Raspberry Juice (100 calories) Choose your swaps wisely and you could save pounds of both kinds. Merry Christmas!

Mobile Foot Clinic Sally Austin S.A.C Dip RFHP
Sally Austin mobile Foot Clinic is providing the opportunity for people to receive foot care in the comfort of their home. After a 20 year career predominately community based both with the NHS and Alzheimer’s Society. Sally trained to become a Foot Health Practitioner with the Stonebridge College, and now holds a level 4 Diploma in foot health. As a mobile foot clinic working in and around Ashford, Hythe, New Romney and surrounding areas I specialize in all aspects of foot care, with minor ailments recognized and treated. My work as a Foot Health Practitioner (FHP) is non-invasive, providing routine maintenance for your feet including trimming and filing nails, reducing thickened nails, treating corns and calluses, repairing cracked heels, fungal infections and diabetic foot care. Foot problems are very common and can affect all ages, what often may appear as something small and insignificant, can pose great difficulties with daily activities such as walking and exercise. Health issues such as diabetes, arthritis and poor circulation may cause foot problems but with regular care complications can be reduced. 34
Sally reports that she finds “people seem to put up with a lot of pain and discomfort concerning their feet, and often report being embarrassed by their feet, however all it usually takes is a few simple procedures.” Sally said “there is no greater compliment than treating someone’s feet and enabling them to be pain free and comfortable”
Sally Austin Mobile foot clinic is fully insured and uses the autoclave system for sterilisation so you can be assured you are receiving the gold standard in hygiene. A Foot Health Check is offered as part of your first appointment and can take up to one hour to enable relevant medical history to be discussed. Sally has been delighted by the response her mobile foot clinic has received from the local community and says “I have always been passionate about working in the community and I am committed in providing a high standard of treatment in a professional and friendly manner.
