Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Welcome to the December issue and the end of an unpredictable year. I can’t begin to tell you just how much I’m looking forward to the Christmas break. With deadlines every month it’s not easy fitting a holiday in, and in the past when I have managed to take a holiday my laptop has been an essential part of my luggage. By the time I get to the end of the year my grey matter is most certainly in need of a well deserved rest. Which is one reason why I don’t publish in January, this is my time to catch and attempt to start the new year with a clean slate - at least that’s the resolution I never quite manage to fulfill. This is my favourite time of the year, I love Christmas. Even if we don’t manage to get away for a few days, to be able to relax and enjoy all the festive activities as well as
catching up with family and friends, without giving work a second thought is my idea of heaven. Add to that Christmas pud, mulled wine, chocolate and silly party games and I’m in my element! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, eat, drink and be merry, I’ll be ready with the hangover cures, local exercise classes and dieting options in the new year!

the garden
The Garden Shed December By Jackie Witcher - Tenterden & District Horticultural Society
I’ts incredible to think that we are once more at
the end of the gardening year. The garden has been put to bed, leaves have been cleared (until the next gust of wind), and my top dressing of 3X manure has been spread and dug in. So what do we do now? I must admit I do like to stroll around the garden once a week, weather permitting, just to keep an eye on things. A little dead heading here and a snip of dead stalks there, but most of all its nice to get some fresh air into the old lungs and although its only a stroll to the top of the garden and back, a nice stretch of the legs doesn’t go amiss. Whilst on the last stroll I noticed that the winter clematis my neighbour gave me (Winter Beauty), is coming into bloom. Creamy white flowers delicately
6
scented. I am quite surprised as it was planted late Spring and I did not expect it to produce flowers in the first year. It is scrambling its way up the post of the Chinese pergola at the top of the garden. I’m hoping it will reach and go across the top so it can be admired from the back bedroom. Time will tell.
I
was reading an interesting argument in the September issue of The Garden (RHS mag), regarding coffee grounds. Now I was told to use these on my garden many moons ago by an Italian friend of mind when I was moaning about the number of slugs devouring my plants. Apparently, he told me, they are not only a good deterrent for slugs and pests, but brilliant for soil improvement, being used all the time in Italy. I was very sceptical, but you know me, I shall have a go at anything once. I was given a huge bag and with gay abandonment sprinkled it quite generously around the garden paying extra attention to the lettuces that I had planted. The smell of fresh ground coffee soon disappeared. Surprisingly I must admit I didn’t see a slug for weeks and had a lovely crop of hole free goodies. So it came as quite a surprise to read that it is illegal to use coffee grounds in this manner, courtesy of the EU! You can use it as a mulch and
as a soil improver but not as a pest control, or repellent! And it will be like this until it has been researched and gained approval from you know who. So when the EU inspector comes around to my garden for a cup of coffee, and asks me what I use the coffee grounds for, my reply will be, “Oh its only used for mulching!!”
the garden
I
often wonder what I would do without my garden, which turned my thoughts to container growing, not only bulbs and flowers, but veges. Some vegetables have the most beautiful foliage and would lend themselves to container growing easily as would herbs. For example purple sage, a hardy herb would look wonderful surrounded by a lovely pink winter pansy underplanted with tete a tete daffodils to add extra interest in the Spring. Another idea is a planter of mixed winter lettuce of different colours. Pretty as well as edible, in a sheltered spot they should do well. Pull the seedlings young to allow the others to mature. Winter Density, Butterhead all year round, Imperial Winter, Artic King, to name but a few of the winter lettuce available. Or how about searching out one of the few radish available for winter growing. China Rose is one, the root measures approx 5” by 2” wide, so just a few growing at the back, fronted by some primula in a container would be pretty special, and one radish would be enough for two people!!! But I think that swiss chard is one of the easiest and most colourful crops to grow in a container, and it has the beauty of two crops in one. The leafy top has an earthy spinach taste, with the stems having a more delicate flavour. They are extremely good steamed and served under a nice piece of cod laced with lots of black pepper and a knob of butter. Not only is seed available in red and green, but mixed colours too. Try kaleidoscope, which includes yellow, orange and maroon. I hope I have tempted you to have a go. Well my next chat isn’t until February, so I must wish you all an extremely Happy Christmas and New Year and hope you have everything that you wish for in your Christmas stocking. Well its cake and coffee time already, but for a change lets push the boat out and go for a nice glass of cream sherry with one (or two) of those mincepies that I have just made. Dare I tell you that they contain rum? (hic hic hic). Well it is Christmas after all! JW Please Mention The

A Home Staged is a House SOLD! Home Staging with Katie Jackson Home Stager and House Doctor Consultant

Home Staging SOS is a friendly professional Home Staging property makeover company. Home Staging, although not new in the UK, is a considerably under-utilised tool when it comes to help selling your property for maximum return.
What does it cost? Much less than a price reduction on your property. Staging your home is an investment. Usually it costs around 1-3 % of the price of your property. Home Staging SOS can work to any budget.
STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD Selling property in today’s market can be tough, so it is a wise decision to stage your property before it goes on the market. At Home Staging SOS we can work with what you already have in the home to help it stand out from the crowd and appeal to a broader audience. We create a life style scene that the majority of buyers aspire to live in.
Q&A Are you wondering why your property is still sitting on the market without any offers? One of the main reasons for a property not selling, is due to it’s poor presentation. Do first impressions count when selling your property? You bet they do! A typical buyer usually makes up their minds within the first 30 seconds of stepping into your property. Also nowadays, 80% of your potential purchasers look on line first to see what’s out there. If your property is not looking it’s best, you’ve just sold the completion!
MAXIMISE YOUR BIGGEST ASSEST Get a greater investment selling your property by dressing and presenting it with Home Staging SOS. What is home staging? Home Staging is the art of dressing and presenting a property to maximise its full selling potential. It is the de-cluttering, furniture placement, accessorising and creating that WOW factor by utilising what is already in the home. It is not just a quick run around with a hoover and a feather duster. In this current property market it is tough when trying to sell property so your home must stand out from the crowd. Why bother to stage? You have to be ahead of your competitors when selling your property. Homes that have been staged, sell quicker than those that have not been staged and for more money.
I offer low cost, high impact solutions utilising what you already have in the home to make your property stand out from the crowd to appeal to the broadest audience. I am an accredited consultant on the www. housedoctornetwork and a member of www. apdo The Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers. *It is advisable to stage your property before you put it on the market for sale.* Special offer if booked through this magazine - £30 off when 2 hour min booked. Call now for a friendly no obligation chat to see how Home Staging SOS can assist you in selling your property faster and for more money.

Grand Designs in your Home Whether you have a large or small home, in the town or country, with a little careful thought and planning you could transform your kitchen into a Grand Design that Kevin McCloud would be impressed with. There were many kitchens on display at the Grand Designs Show, Olympia, but one of the most visited and admired was this striking Art Deco style kitchen, designed and hand crafted by Thoroughly Wood, a family run furniture company based in Lyminge, Kent. Visitors were struck with the handmade units of solid maple with black walnut bead and inlay, including a dresser and an exquisite island unit. Perhaps the most coveted feature was the unusual walk-in pantry with bow fronted doors of solid black walnut with maple bead. This is an excellent space saving masterpiece, complete with useful racking, pull-out wine storage and even handmade handles.

Christmas Decorations Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Are they gaudy rather than gorgeous, tacky instead of terrific? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer with wreaths, baubles and garlands galore
14
Choose a theme Rather than assembling any old cacophony of decorations, choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit the style of your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laidback and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fir tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fluorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. A Scandinavian theme would involve simple decorations in red and white, while a colourful, contemporary theme would be based around one or two bright colours. Dress the tree Start by winding it with lights – making sure they’re evenly distributed by occasionally switching them on and standing back for an overall impression. Use a small stepladder if necessary to reach the top. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees you can afford to go for heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest first, filling in around them with smaller ones. Don’t hang all the ornaments on the tips of branches – placing some nearer the trunk creates a sense of depth and interest. Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and
Graphite Christmas tree, paper decorations, stockings and cotton string lights, all Living in Store, 01628 478767; www.livinginstore.com.
fruit is a significant part of the holiday season; for others, creating a decorative wreath offers the chance to experiment with exciting new materials, from tinsel to feathers, pearls to buttons. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Whatever its style, a Christmas wreath always provides a wonderful sense of festive welcome. Make some decorations Home-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish, be they charmingly childish or ultra-sophisticated. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glittercovered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come. Wrap your presents Transform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colourcoordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Inexpensive paper – even brown paper or newsprint – looks lovely if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired
beads can all provide additional allure. For a frivolous finishing touch add a tiny pine cone, iced biscuit or small bauble. Sort out your cards An abundance of cards can soon appear to cover every available surface, so it pays to establish a system as soon as they start arriving. The most straightforward option is to clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of
the staircase.
the home
Create displays Nothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Bowls of clementines or nuts are both ornamental as well as edible, while baubles or fairy lights (the latter placed near a handy socket) can also be bundled into a glass bowl or vase for a glittery effect. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, finished off with a dish, tray or platter filled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.
Looking after your tree Buy a tree that’s as fresh as possible; bright green and, ideally, displayed in water, out of direct sunlight. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help the tree absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Try not to stand the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator. If you wish, you could add a couple of cups of corn syrup to the water to provide the tree with extra nourishment. by Katherine Sorrell

Seasonal Delights These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper.
16
Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.
Mini Christmas Cakes FOR THE CAKE • 250g butter, softened • 250g dark muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 350g plain flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground cloves • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 800g mixed dried fruit • 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and chopped • 100g chopped mixed nuts FOR THE DECORATION • 750g marzipan • Icing sugar, for dusting • 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved • Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots

LIONS CLUB CHRISTMAS FLOAT IS COMING TO YOU The much loved Tenterden Lions Club Father Christmas Float will be visiting many areas in and around Tenterden in December. For about forty years the float has been touring the streets to raise money for Charity. Last year, despite straightened times, we raised over £6000 and all of it was given to local, national and international charities. Look out for us outside the old Tenterden Library at late night shopping evening on 7th December when we will be collecting for the Tenterden Day Centre. We will also be collecting for the Day Centre outside Tesco’s on 14th & 15th December. Many residents, particularly the children, look out for the Float and say that it is a sign that Christmas is on the way! Christmas lights, carols and jollity from Father Christmas with his helpers dressed in capes and top hats all make up a really fun and atmospheric time and it is great to see groups of happy, smiling children with wondrous eyes waiting for us to come round the corner and cheer them on their way. It is gratifying to collect so much, especially when people have saved their coins for months in anticipation of giving it to the float. So, the Tenterden Lions Club wish all the local residents a very happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in your area. Thanks you all so much for the support you have given us in the past. Below is a list of where we plan to visit you.

wit & wisdom A Little Poem For You It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake I have a little Satnav It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver’s friend It tells you where you are
It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene
I have a little Satnav I’ve had it all my life It’s better than the normal ones My Satnav is my wife
It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear.
It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive “It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says “You’re doing thirty five”
I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice
Sudoku Solution
It fills me up with counselling Each journey’s pretty fraught So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I’m properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn it off.
Railway Complaint The following is an actual exchange of correspondence between a customer and the Irish Railway Company.
26
Gentlemen, I have been riding your trains daily for the last two years, and the service on your line seems to be getting worse every day. I am tired of standing in the aisle all the time on a 14-mile trip. I think the transportation system is worse than that enjoyed by people 2,000 years ago. Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan
Crossword Solution
Dear Mr. Finnegan, We received your letter with reference to the shortcomings of our service and believe you are somewhat confused in your history. The only mode of transportation 2,000 years ago was by foot. Sincerely, Irish Railway Company Gentlemen, I am in receipt of your letter, and I think you are the ones who are confused in your history. If you will refer to the Bible and the Book of David, 9th Chapter, you will find that Balaam rode to town on his ass. That.... Gentlemen, is something I have not been able to do on your train in the last two years! Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan.

We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
