Magazine December 2012
Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Welcome to the December issue and the end of an unpredictable year. I can’t begin to tell you just how much I’m looking forward to the Christmas break. With deadlines every month it’s not easy fitting in a break, even on the odd holiday my laptop is an essential part of my luggage. By the time I get to the end of the year my grey matter is most certainly in need of a well deserved rest. As a result I don’t publish in January, this is my opportuntiy to recharge my battery and catch up on everything that has been pushed to oneside “until I have more time!”. This is my favourite time of the year, I love Christmas. To be able to relax and enjoy all the festive activities, while catching up with family and friends, and most importantly putting work to the back of my mind, is my
idea of heaven. Add to that Christmas pud, mulled wine, chocolate and silly party games and I’m in my element! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, eat, drink and be merry, I’ll be here with the hangover cures, dieting options and exercise classes and in the new year!

A Very Vintage Christmas
4
It’s mid December and your newly-bought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations. If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably find a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, non-functioning fairy lights and springs of plastic holly. Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw away. It’s a treasured set of old-style, hand painted tree decorations, made out of wafer thin glass. Vintage tree ornaments are an evocative sight for those of us who were children in the 1950s and 60s: each year when I unwrap my collection it takes me back to a time when Christmas seemed truly magical and exciting. Although I understand the reasons why hanging delicate glass baubles on the Christmas tree – within grabbing distance of little hands - is no longer a good idea, it’s sad to think that such beautiful items are no longer readily available. The tradition of making glass tree decorations dates back to 17th century Bohemia (the modern day Czech Republic) and Germany. Today’s familiar ball shapes had their origins at a place called Lauscha in Germany, where legend has it they were first created when glass blowers competed to see who could blow the largest
sphere before the molten glass popped. Those that survived were kept by the glassmakers’ wives, swirled with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, offering protection and blessing during the holy season. In 1848 a picture of the young Queen Victoria’s Christmas tree, hung with decorations brought from her husband Prince Albert’s native Germany, was published in the Illustrated London News. This sparked a copycat craze throughout Europe and soon whole families in the town of Lauscha were employed to mass-produce decorations – the menfolk blowing the glass and the women and children painting and finishing the ornaments. Later that century, German immigrants brought the same passion for glass decorations to America. Thanks to entrepreneur Frank Woolworth - who bought millions for his popular chain stores - what began as a cottage industry in Lauscha became an international phenomenon. By the mid-20th century new molding techniques had sped up mass production and reduced the cost of manufacture. In addition to the more conventional round and oval shapes, there were decorations shaped like musical instruments, stars, lanterns, mushrooms, snowflakes, snowy cottages and little figures of Santa Claus. My favourite ones were the exotic birds with silky fibre glass tails that clipped onto your tree and trembled like real birds every time the branches moved. Nowadays most Christmas tree ornaments are made out of plastic, but if you do happen to find a Lauschan treasure lurking at the bottom of your decorations box, take good care of it. Vintage tree ornaments are becoming highly collectable and you can find sets on Ebay and other online auction sites for between £15 and £30. By Claudia Leaf

Seasonal Delights These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper.
8
Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.
Mini Christmas Cakes FOR THE CAKE • 250g butter, softened • 250g dark muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 350g plain flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground cloves • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 800g mixed dried fruit • 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and chopped • 100g chopped mixed nuts FOR THE DECORATION • 750g marzipan • Icing sugar, for dusting • 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved • Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots

Christmas Goes Crackers If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year. The Far Side Gallery 1 By Gary Larson If there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour. Simon’s Cat Vs. The World! Simon Tofield Not since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his long-suffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before.
Forget fighting dead flies…this time it’s war. Life-long cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic. The Best of “Punch” Cartoons. Helen Walasek, Prion Books Limited ‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk. The Best of Matt 2012 Matthew Pritchett Looking back over the last twelve months, you would expect
cartoons on the Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else in-between. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year. The Book of Bunny Suicides. Andy Riley Poor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I
Special Edition
Garfield Going for Gold Jim Davis Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.

Christmas Decorations Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Are they gaudy rather than gorgeous, tacky instead of terrific? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer with wreaths, baubles and garlands galore
12
Choose a theme Rather than assembling any old cacophony of decorations, choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit the style of your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laidback and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fir tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fluorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. A Scandinavian theme would involve simple decorations in red and white, while a colourful, contemporary theme would be based around one or two bright colours. Dress the tree Start by winding it with lights – making sure they’re evenly distributed by occasionally switching them on and standing back for an overall impression. Use a small stepladder if necessary to reach the top. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees you can afford to go for heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest first, filling in around them with smaller ones. Don’t hang all the ornaments on the tips of branches – placing some nearer the trunk creates a sense of depth and interest. Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and
Graphite Christmas tree, paper decorations, stockings and cotton string lights, all Living in Store, 01628 478767; www.livinginstore.com.
fruit is a significant part of the holiday season; for others, creating a decorative wreath offers the chance to experiment with exciting new materials, from tinsel to feathers, pearls to buttons. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Whatever its style, a Christmas wreath always provides a wonderful sense of festive welcome. Make some decorations Home-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish, be they charmingly childish or ultra-sophisticated. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glittercovered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come. Wrap your presents Transform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colourcoordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Inexpensive paper – even brown paper or newsprint – looks lovely if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired
beads can all provide additional allure. For a frivolous finishing touch add a tiny pine cone, iced biscuit or small bauble. Sort out your cards An abundance of cards can soon appear to cover every available surface, so it pays to establish a system as soon as they start arriving. The most straightforward option is to clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of
the staircase.
the home
Create displays Nothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Bowls of clementines or nuts are both ornamental as well as edible, while baubles or fairy lights (the latter placed near a handy socket) can also be bundled into a glass bowl or vase for a glittery effect. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, finished off with a dish, tray or platter filled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.
Looking after your tree Buy a tree that’s as fresh as possible; bright green and, ideally, displayed in water, out of direct sunlight. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help the tree absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Try not to stand the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator. If you wish, you could add a couple of cups of corn syrup to the water to provide the tree with extra nourishment. by Katherine Sorrell

It’s a Great Time to Review Your ISA Investments Servicing the car, shopping around for the best insurance deal, regularly investing and reviewing your ISA portfolio... most of us accept that these are good habits to get into - but how many of us actually stick to them? ISA investing doesn’t need to be confusing. With the help of a financial advisor, gaining a clear understanding of how this valuable allowance can form a cornerstone of your investment portfolio is possible for even the most inexperienced investor. The key to building a cohesive and coherent ISA portfolio, with the potential to achieve your long-term financial objectives, is diversification. Diversification means spreading your investments across a range of different assets 14 to reduce the impact of any one falling in value. Not even the most talented investor can predict which one is going to produce the best return year after year, but there are two things you can be sure of: 1) The best-performing investment in one year can often turn out to be the worstperforming investment the next year. And 2) by spreading your money across a selection of asset classes, geographic regions and sectors, your investments stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. Each investor’s objective will be unique to their own individual needs. Whether you are looking to provide additional income in retirement, building a capital sum for the future or both, ensuring that your investments are working together is vital for your future financial wellbeing. Selecting your ISA investment manager is one consideration but regularly reviewing their performance is an equally important factor. Not properly monitoring the performance of your investment manager is akin to driving a car without any rear-view mirrors – you don’t get any warning of what’s coming. In the investment world, that might be the departure of a ‘star’
investment manager you’d specifically chosen or the impact of macroeconomic factors on specific regions or asset classes. But how frequently should you review your ISA portfolio? There is no right or wrong answer to this question but the commonly accepted view is that an annual inspection is adequate for most. Identifying the strong performers (and those that haven’t fared so well) is one aspect of the exercise but, fundamentally, investors should be asking one key question: is this portfolio still working to achieve my financial objectives? Conducting a regular review will ensure that your investments are working towards your objectives. Whether your portfolio needs a small tweak in one or two areas or a complete overhaul, by working together with myself, the process for getting your portfolio back on the right course can be a simple and cost-effective one. Weight Loss? Tried the Hypno-Gastric Band? The Hypno-Gastric Band is an exciting new procedure engulfing the weight loss world. It is a tried and tested method of weight loss using the power of hypnotherapy. No physical operation or anesthetic is required and therefore has none of the medical risks associated with an operation. There are a minimum of six hour-long sessions, where the therapist works with the client to ‘uninstall’ negative learnt patterns of eating and ‘re-install’ healthy patterns of behavior which aims to enable the client to release their old eating habits. Once the therapist is satisfied that the root cause of over-eating has been released and positive patterns established the client undergoes a ‘gastric band operation’ through the power of visualization and suggestion.

Weight Loss? Hypno-gastric band Safe, effective, low cost treatment
Hypnosis is a totally natural state, which most people experience several times a day, for example, when we wake up or get engrossed in a book or film. This relaxation enables the conscious mind to rest and allows communication with the subconscious. It is in the subconscious mind that ‘neural pathways’ are formed and where automatic responses and habits are established. Sometimes no amount of willpower will correct these habits or negative patterns of thought and so these thoughts, which are often unconscious, could be with the client for the rest of their lives unless they have support to change. Hypnotherapy aims to install positive neural pathways or ‘automatic positive thought patterns, and uninstall negative beliefs and patterns. This supports the client to break free from keeping them locked in their condition.

HELP YOUR CHILDREN ONTO THE PROPERTY LADDER
In another in our regular series on legal matters Elizabeth Connell, Conveyancing Partner at Tenterden Solicitors, Pengelly & Rylands talks about the possibilities and the pitfalls There has been a lot in the news lately about how hard it is for young people to buy their first home. With joblessness, student debt, the difficulties in getting mortgages and the large deposits required, the average age for first time buyers is now over 30. To overcome these problems some parents are lending a helping hand, effectively providing a “private banking” facility. There are many ways of doing this: loans; private mortgages; transfers of equity; obtaining a joint mortgage with your child; re-mortgaging or standing as guarantor for them.
26
There are also numerous pitfalls for the unwary. What if you or your child should die or be declared bankrupt? What happens if their relationship doesn’t work out? What about the grandchildren? What if you fall out, or you or they need to sell? Should you change your Will? Should you have a declaration of trust? What about capital gains tax and inheritance tax? What about the other children and how do you treat them all fairly? The ideal solution will need to be tailor-made for your specific circumstances, and you would be well advised to consult your solicitor. This is definitely an area of law where one size does not fit all. At Pengelly and Rylands we can draw on the expertise of our conveyancing, wills and trusts and family departments to meet your specific needs. As a firm which takes pride in offering a personal and efficient service to our clients, we are delighted to have secured membership of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS). The scheme is a mark of excellence and ensures high quality conveyancing services. It requires the practice to undergo rigorous assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews by the Law Society. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.
Elizabeth Connell – Conveyancing Partner If you have any questions about helping your children onto the property ladder, or buying or selling property, then Elizabeth Connell or Gill Snow would be happy to help. You can call them on 01580 762248.

wit & wisdom A Little Poem For You It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake I have a little Satnav It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver’s friend It tells you where you are
It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene
I have a little Satnav I’ve had it all my life It’s better than the normal ones My Satnav is my wife
It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear.
It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive “It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says “You’re doing thirty five”
I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice
Sudoku Solution
It fills me up with counselling Each journey’s pretty fraught So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I’m properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn it off.
Railway Complaint The following is an actual exchange of correspondence between a customer and the Irish Railway Company.
28
Gentlemen, I have been riding your trains daily for the last two years, and the service on your line seems to be getting worse every day. I am tired of standing in the aisle all the time on a 14-mile trip. I think the transportation system is worse than that enjoyed by people 2,000 years ago. Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan
Crossword Solution
Dear Mr. Finnegan, We received your letter with reference to the shortcomings of our service and believe you are somewhat confused in your history. The only mode of transportation 2,000 years ago was by foot. Sincerely, Irish Railway Company Gentlemen, I am in receipt of your letter, and I think you are the ones who are confused in your history. If you will refer to the Bible and the Book of David, 9th Chapter, you will find that Balaam rode to town on his ass. That.... Gentlemen, is something I have not been able to do on your train in the last two years! Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan.
