Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Welcome to the December issue and the end of an unpredictable year. I can’t begin to tell you just how much I’m looking forward to the Christmas break. With deadlines every month it’s not easy fitting a holiday in, and in the past when I have managed to take a holiday my laptop has been an essential part of my luggage. By the time I get to the end of the year my grey matter is most certainly in need of a well deserved rest. Which is one reason why I don’t publish in January, this is my time to catch and attempt to start the new year with a clean slate - at least that’s the resolution I never quite manage to fulfill. This is my favourite time of the year, I love Christmas. Even if we don’t manage to get away for a few days, to be able to relax and enjoy all the festive activities as well as
catching up with family and friends, without giving work a second thought is my idea of heaven. Add to that Christmas pud, mulled wine, chocolate and silly party games and I’m in my element! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, eat, drink and be merry, I’ll be ready with the hangover cures, local exercise classes and dieting options in the new year!

A Very Vintage Christmas It’s mid December and your newlybought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations. If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably find a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, nonfunctioning fairy lights and sprigs of plastic holly.

Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, away. together, then I root about in whatever Jane puts in the box (this did not seem popular when it was the best china) and then I stand on the top of the box as it gets taped up. I love the tape and sit on top of each box like a leopard in a tree and chew off the tape until someone tells me off. Lastly, I then sit on the top of each box as Clive carries it to where they are being stored. He grumbles a bit but I tell him it is good for his muscles. I tell you- all this packing is hard work!
Mowgli Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. I hope all of you are getting on alright. It is absolute chaos in our house! As well as expecting the baby very soon Clive and Jane have madly decided to move house. As if we didn’t all have enough to cope with! We are now moving any day so there are boxes everywhere. I love all this as boxes are one of my obsessions. I can honestly say that I have helped with every box. I get in the box as soon as it is made and taped

Ebony of course is less happy about the boxes. I am sure you all remember how she feels about change. Even a new duvet cover stopped her getting on the bed for weeks. Anyway, she is coping very well so far and we have been promised great things from the new house. Apparently it will be warmer with no leaks and there will be more space to run about in, an old fashioned twisty staircase to play on, more windows to look out of and of course we will get a new cat run. I am a bit concerned about missing the shrew family that we watch during shrew TV in our current garden but Clive reassures us there will be some sort of creature to watch. Ebony and I

are both waiting anxiously to see how those silly goats get moved. They are so naughty. Clive wants to walk them down the road to the new house. We overheard Jane getting a bit cross and telling him he is mad. She wants to put them in a horse box. Clive says he doesn’t know how on earth he will ever get them in the horse box...... who knows what will happen...... we are planning a window seat for the whole adventure and will report back in due course! Other news of great importance is that Ebony caught her first creature this month. She has never caught anything but she very proudly brought Clive in a little shrew. She got a lot of attention for this and now thinks she is quite the hunter. I know the truth- I am the accomplished hunter of the house (in my 6 years I must have caught at least 10 creatures) and I could tell that the shrew was not well at all. In fact, it was barely alive. So Ebony managed to catch a nearly dead shrew and now she is an advanced hunter. So unfair! Anyway, by the time you read this it will be just about time for Christmas so I hope you are all having fun helping put up the Christmas tree, playing with all the baubles, the parcel wrappings and ribbons. Ebony and I just love helping put all that curly ribbon on the parcels. Apparently we double the time needed to wrap presents but we are of course just helping. I’m sure our folks would moan if we stopped helping- who knows how they would get anything done without us?!

Christmas Decorations Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Are they gaudy rather than gorgeous, tacky instead of terrific? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer with wreaths, baubles and garlands galore
14
Choose a theme Rather than assembling any old cacophony of decorations, choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit the style of your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laidback and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fir tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fluorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. A Scandinavian theme would involve simple decorations in red and white, while a colourful, contemporary theme would be based around one or two bright colours. Dress the tree Start by winding it with lights – making sure they’re evenly distributed by occasionally switching them on and standing back for an overall impression. Use a small stepladder if necessary to reach the top. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees you can afford to go for heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest first, filling in around them with smaller ones. Don’t hang all the ornaments on the tips of branches – placing some nearer the trunk creates a sense of depth and interest. Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and

fruit is a significant part of the holiday season; for others, creating a decorative wreath offers the chance to experiment with exciting new materials, from tinsel to feathers, pearls to buttons. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Whatever its style, a Christmas wreath always provides a wonderful sense of festive welcome. Make some decorations Home-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish, be they charmingly childish or ultra-sophisticated. Multi-coloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glittercovered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come. Wrap your presents Transform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree they will look so much better if they’re colourcoordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Inexpensive paper – even brown paper or newsprint – looks lovely if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired
beads can all provide additional allure. For a frivolous finishing touch add a tiny pine cone, iced biscuit or small bauble. Sort out your cards An abundance of cards can soon appear to cover every available surface, so it pays to establish a system as soon as they start arriving. The most straightforward option is to clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of
the staircase.
the home
Create displays Nothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Bowls of clementines or nuts are both ornamental as well as edible, while baubles or fairy lights (the latter placed near a handy socket) can also be bundled into a glass bowl or vase for a glittery effect. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, finished off with a dish, tray or platter filled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.
Looking after your tree Buy a tree that’s as fresh as possible; bright green and, ideally, displayed in water, out of direct sunlight. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help the tree absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Try not to stand the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator. If you wish, you could add a couple of cups of corn syrup to the water to provide the tree with extra nourishment. by Katherine Sorrell
Grand Designs in your Home Whether you have a large or small home, in the town or country, with a little careful thought and planning you could transform your kitchen into a Grand Design that Kevin McCloud would be impressed with. There were many kitchens on display at the Grand Designs Show, Olympia, but one of the most visited and admired was this striking Art Deco style kitchen, designed and hand crafted by Thoroughly Wood, a family run furniture company based in Lyminge, Kent. Visitors were struck with the handmade units of solid maple with black walnut bead and inlay, including a dresser and an exquisite island unit. Perhaps the most coveted feature was the unusual walk-in pantry with bow fronted doors of solid black walnut with maple bead. This is an excellent space saving masterpiece, complete with useful racking, pull-out wine storage and even handmade handles.
Thoroughly Wood’s display of stunning handmade ‘Art Deco’ style furniture at The Grand Designs show
Small enough to care
With smaller kitchen companies you can usually end up with a much higher quality result, more personal attention – and in this case, a Grand Design at a far lower cost than you would expect!

Seasonal Delights These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes.
Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper.
16
Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.
Mini Christmas Cakes FOR THE CAKE • 250g butter, softened • 250g dark muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 350g plain flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground cloves • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 800g mixed dried fruit • 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and chopped • 100g chopped mixed nuts FOR THE DECORATION • 750g marzipan • Icing sugar, for dusting • 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved • Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots

wit & wisdom A Little Poem For You It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake I have a little Satnav It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver’s friend It tells you where you are
It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene
I have a little Satnav I’ve had it all my life It’s better than the normal ones My Satnav is my wife
It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear.
It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive “It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says “You’re doing thirty five”
I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice
Sudoku Solution
It fills me up with counselling Each journey’s pretty fraught So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I’m properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn it off.
Railway Complaint The following is an actual exchange of correspondence between a customer and the Irish Railway Company.
26 Gentlemen, I have been riding your trains daily for the last two years, and the service on your line seems to be getting worse every day. I am tired of standing in the aisle all the time on a 14-mile trip. I think the transportation system is worse than that enjoyed by people 2,000 years ago. Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan
Crossword Solution
Dear Mr. Finnegan, We received your letter with reference to the shortcomings of our service and believe you are somewhat confused in your history. The only mode of transportation 2,000 years ago was by foot. Sincerely, Irish Railway Company Gentlemen, I am in receipt of your letter, and I think you are the ones who are confused in your history. If you will refer to the Bible and the Book of David, 9th Chapter, you will find that Balaam rode to town on his ass. That.... Gentlemen, is something I have not been able to do on your train in the last two years! Yours truly, Patrick Finnegan.

Architects are often asked to produce ‘plans’ for a domestic project but the purpose of these drawings is often not understood. This two part article outlines the basic process for a domestic project such as an extension or conversion.
Building Regulations 28
Once you have gained planning permission most projects will need Building Regulations approval. There are two routes you can take. The first is called a Building Notice and does not normally require drawings. This method is suited to small or very simple projects. With this method you can begin works as soon as you have submitted a notice. The works will be checked at certain stages by the Building Control Officer.
This process normally takes 5 weeks but, with your approval, the process can be extended to 8 weeks. If you are granted approval you will be issued with a notice and as with the building notice the work will be checked on site at certain stages.
Building Once the necessary approvals have been gained works on site can be considered. For most domestic projects a competent builder can develop a scheme from the building regulation drawings negating the need for another set of drawings called working or construction drawings. If this method is used the builder must check all dimension and levels prior to carrying out any work and report any discrepancies. This is a simple overview of the process of gaining permission to build and the key to any project is that if you are in doubt check and do not proceed at risk. John Trenaman
However you do not have the protection provided by gaining full plans approval. If your building work does not comply with the building regulations you may be forced to make corrections or rebuild elements. The second method is full plans. With this method you will need to submit drawings and details. These drawings are not the same as the planning drawings and are a new set. The application for full plans can be submitted to the local authority or if preferred a private building control. The building control officer will check the proposals against the approved documents and consult with any appropriate authorities.
