Don’t forget Valentine’s Day this month! It’s time to focus romantically on your loved one, or maybe even someone you hope will become a loved one! Why not treat them to a romantic meal for two, although the way to my heart is a great BIG bar of mint Aero!

REPAIRS TO...

Call 01233 720488 or

Welcome to the first edition of 2012, I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year (albeit belated). I hope you had a great Christmas and the return to work wasn’t too much of a challenge. I never seem to realise how beneficial the seasonal break is until I return to work with a renewed calm. Unfortuantely, this year the calm was short lived when I realised that one of my deadlines was earlier than the others! The Village Directory is now in its seventh year but deadlines still challenge my stress levels!

Have a great month ~

February By Jackie Witcher Tenterden & District Horticultural Society

Is it too late to say Happy New Year to you all? No? Good! And did we all get what we wanted in our Christmas stockings? Well I must have been a really good girl, cos I got just about everything I really needed. Some really good gardening gloves (must go through at least six pairs a year!), and a very good quality stainless steel hand fork, (this I am very impressed with as the handle is soft moulded plastic and very comfy to use. Unlike the wooden type handle, which the end of the shaft seems to bruise the upper palm of my hand, this one has a grip instead). I also got the book I wanted on fruit and fruit trees, (The Amateur Gardener book on Fruit), mainly because I am still unsure and nervous on pruning my new fruit trees, so must study the methods used. I was also given a wicked tool for splitting plants. I’d never seen one like it before, it’s called a Japanese gardeners trowel. In Japan its called a hori hori meaning dig dig! It has a serrated edge to it, and I hasten to add that it is not sharp and just the right weight required. It can also be used for weeding and digging. Husband gave me a new stainless steel fork and spade with genuine willow shafts, very posh! I shall be frightened to use them! But, and don’t laugh, the best gardening pressy I was given was a string tin. Silly isn’t it. They’re not expensive to buy yet I never did get round to it and always keeping my string in an old plastic pot! I shall look forward to using them all, shame its raining today as I’m getting the gardening urge and could do with some gardening therapy after Christmas and all the indulgences that went with it. The saddest thing? Nobody bought me any compost (sigh). Taking a turn around the plot the other day I was surprised to see just how many spring flowers there were, not only emerging but actually flowering. I have at the moment, not only snowflake, the larger version of snowdrop, but also hellebores, daffodils and even the roses have continued flowering. The hyacinth and drumstick primula buds are coming through along with the crocus and will be in full bloom within the next week or so. I think that the good Lord is enjoying a game with us gardeners and

the garden not only confusing the plants with the un-seasonal warm weather but us as well! Mind you if they all bloom together what a kaleidoscope of colour the garden will be, but there shall also be a vacant spell following, until the later spring/early summer flowers arrive. The hot and cold beds seem to have survived their upheaval and new sprouts are appearing on the perennials in the beds. But the one thing I am looking forward to seeing are the new tulips bulbs that were planted. There were a few unusual ones, as were reported in the December issue, I don’t have a great deal of luck with tulips, so fingers crossed. I am keeping a close eye on the cuttings that were taken and plants that were split, as this warm weather may encourage an early batch of aphids etc. I did hang up a “bug house”, which is a like a small bunch of hollow canes tied together, to encourage the ladybirds and lace wings to hibernate over winter in my garden. But I don’t think many of them decided to have a snooze this year as I have seen quite a few of both around in the garden. Lets hope we don’t get frosts now.

Heat half the butter and the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the sliced leeks and garlic and fry over a medium-high heat until softened but not brown. Stir in the rice and cook for one minute. Add a ladleful of the hot stock to the pan and simmer gently, stirring all the time. When all the liquid has been absorbed by the rice, add another ladleful of stock. Continue adding the stock in this way until the rice is tender and has a creamy texture – this will take about 20 minutes. Heat the rest of the butter in a separate frying pan and fry the mushrooms over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Stir the Parmesan cheese into the risotto and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the risotto in warmed bowls topped with the fried mushrooms, chopped parsley and extra Parmesan cheese.

New Year, New You! My boss gave me a self-help book for my 29th birthday. I was so appalled that someone had deemed me in need of ‘help’ that I quit and went to Australia. So you can say what you like about them, but they really do work…one way or another! Whether it’s a new diet, relationship or job, there’s a book that claims it’ll help you achieve it. What better way to kick-start 2012 than turning over a new page, and a new leaf?

Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway. Susan Jeffers They say a life lived in fear is a life halflived and Feel the Fear is based on the principle that doing something that scares us, is a good thing. It promises to show you how to ‘turn fear and indecision into confidence and action’. Packed with real-life examples of people who have let fear dominate them, this is a very grounded and levelheaded book. There are lots of practical tips and activities to help you start to face your fear, and end it. This Book Will Save Your Life. A.M. Homes Ok so it’s a fictional satire rather than selfhelp novel, but it most certainly IS lifeaffirming. Written with wonderfully quirky Los Angeles as a backdrop, it’s been hailed as an antidote to modern life. When reclusive stockbroker Richard Novak ends up in the emergency room, he’s forced

to open his eyes to the world around him. It’s the perfect accompaniment for welcoming in the New Year and seizing 2012 with gusto. How to Win Friends and Influence People. Dale Carnegie One of the most successful self-help books of all time and not to be confused with the film ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’, which could get you fired. Although the original was published in the 1930s, this master class in how to handle other people continues to be relevant. With the exception of Willy Loman, there has never been a greater advocate for being ‘wellliked’ than Dale Carnegie. Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps. Allan and Barbara Pease I was going to go for the obvious ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’ here but decided instead to go for the comical pairing of husband

and wife team Allan and Barbara Pease. With chapters entitled ‘Women are Touchy-Feely’ and ‘Why Men Are So Thick-skinned’ you know you’re going to get an amusing and enlightening read. If this is ‘pop psychology’ then call me Frasier Crane. Let me point out here that my Dad mumbles so much we can’t hear HIM and Mum’s an excellent mapreader. Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen The brainchild of motivational speakers, Canfield and Hansen, the premise is simple: heart-warming stories will make us feel better, just as chicken soup warms the cockles in the winter. The original book sold millions of copies and spawned a series that’s been translated into 54 languages. We must all be suckers for a happy ending. Enjoy it curled up with a bowl of soup and you will be joy personified come February.

and in the kitchen...

The Italian Diet. Gino D’Acampo The Dukan diet claims ‘three million French women can’t be wrong’ but I say, one gorgeous Italian man who encourages us to eat cheese and pasta…is definitely right! The diet book that looks like a recipe book, this is all about eating healthily without depriving yourself of the things you love the most.

Retirement Planning David Lewis of Leacon Finance has many years of experience in helping people to enjoy their Retirement. Although Retirement Planning is a straight forward idea, when you look into it retirement planning can seem quite daunting, and as a result gets put off by a lot of people. We can all picture our idealistic retirement lifestyle – but understanding what it will take to achieve it can be a different matter. That’s why it’s never too early to start making plans, Many people, who have been saving into a pension fund through an insurance company, will take their TAX Free Cash and arrange an annuity through the same insurance company that has been providing the pension scheme. However, that insurance company may not currently offer the best annuity rates, or it may not have the options most suited to your requirements. Therefore it is important to shop around to find the best rates for your circumstances..

22

Many people don’t realise that they can shop around and potentially get a Higher Income through other annuity providers. Smokers or those suffering from a range of other illnesses may qualify for Enhanced annuity which would increase their Income. There are now other options open to you to allowing you to take your tax free cash when you retire but still leave the remains of your funds Invested. This allows you to take a flexible income or no income at all which can be a very useful for reducing your tax bill if you have other income .A combination of income and tax free cash Can be taken again this can help reduce your annual income Tax.

Sudoku How to Play: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Often the dream of those retiring is to move to sunnier climes. You should be aware of the tax liable in your new country of residence. In many countries if you take your pension after you are a resident your Tax free cash may be liable to tax in your country of residence. Your ISA may also lose their tax free status and be liable to Capital Gains Tax. The aim of Leacon Finance is to give friendly unbiased independent financial advice. business Family Law - ‘Mend it, don’t end it’ In the latest of a series of articles about legal matters affecting the family, Nigel Clarke, Resolution Accredited Specialist, Collaborative Solicitor & Family Mediator from Canterbury Law Solicitors writes: How about some good news to cheer us up as we enter the New Year with bleak forecasts about the economy, perhaps for several more years to come?

24

Britain’s oldest married couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on new year’s day and a photograph showed the couple, Robert and Susan Erskine (aged 100 and 99 respectively) smiling, holding hands and saying ‘we love one another as much now as we did then’.

Alongside this wonderful photograph was the headline ‘Mend it, don’t end it’, the sobering advice from a senior High Court judge reflecting his grave concern about the rising social and financial cost of the increase in the divorce rate. The well respected judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, suggests that marriage breakdown is on the increase again, especially so amongst the age group sometimes described as the ‘empty nesters’. The ‘grey divorce’ is a big growth area, perhaps because couples no longer feel the need to stay together for the sake of the children who have left home or perhaps because people are living longer. It is now not uncommon for people to petition for divorce after 30 or 40 years of marriage. The family justice system is creaking under the strain. Worryingly, there are an estimated 3.8 million children currently caught up in the court system waiting 12 months or more for a hearing.

business Despite the advice that we should work hard to stay together and promote the gold standard of marriage, surely no-one readily gives up on a long term relationship or marriage without good reason. The breakdown of any relationship is a tragedy for the people concerned, their friends and relations. In a civilised society we would all welcome any initiative that would help support and strengthen the foundations of any long term relationship - perhaps this is part of the vision of the big society - but for many couples, staying together is no longer an option. In these cases surely the family justice system needs to focus on providing specialist help, guidance and support for the couple as they try to plan for their lives apart. In this way couples can preserve their dignity, a loving parental relationship with their children, financial well-being and, yes, sometimes preserve friendships with their former partner or spouse. The breakdown of a relationship is traumatic and painful but it need not become a battlefield and with the right specialist help and support, couples are, and do, sort out their futures apart in a civilised and cost effective way. If you are facing the trauma of a relationship breakdown, find a specialist who can best help you. The Computer Doctor’s Surgery is Open! Q: I have Windows Vista and whenever my computer starts I get a box that comes up saying that there is a missing file, when I click on the cancel button the computer continues working fine. Should I be concerned? Mrs M, Charing A: Thanks for the question. I’m sure that there are many other people with same problem who will appreciate an answer. It would of course be helpful to know the name of the missing file, but generally when you get these messages it indicates that there is a program that is set to run automatically when your system starts that is complaining because something is missing.

• You deleted a file accidentally • You removed a program but the process didn’t complete successfully

If you have a question for The Computer Doctor about a hardware, software or any other technology issue call Steve Newman at Ashford Computer Solutions on 01233 469217.

• You have a disk error that has caused a file to become damaged As you can see there are some perfectly innocent and some more worrying explanations. Many people live with these “little annoyances” every time they start their system, but personally I’d want to find out what was causing the problem for peace of mind’s sake. The first thing I would recommend you to do is an internet search for the error message/file name of the missing file. This should give you good idea if it is from some legitimate software that you use or have used in the past or something more sinister. The simplest solution may be re-installing the missing program or removing something you no longer need from your Startup Menu, or perhaps

the home Safeguard Your Nearest and Dearest From the Risk of Fire He added: “Just three breaths of toxic smoke from a fire can be life-threatening, but we offer free safety advice and services to help minimise the risk of being harmed. By encouraging those you care about to get in touch, you will be playing a huge part in preventing a fire and may even save a life.”

28

When a fire engine zooms down the road on flashing blue lights with sirens blazing, often the first thing people think is “I hope it’s not a fire in my home or that of someone I know”. But how often do you take the time to check that your nearest and dearest are fully equipped with the right advice to protect them from fire? Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is appealing to residents to make sure their homes, and those of people close to them, are safeguarded. Neighbours, friends and loved-ones may need your help to protect themselves from the outbreak of fire. Perhaps you have an elderly parent, or know someone who lives alone, or with young children, who could benefit from safety advice. Maybe your own children are now grown-up, starting a family of their own and need some tips on fire prevention. KFRS Risk Reduction Manager Rob Sherwood said: “We can offer people practical help to reduce the risk of fire. Maybe they need a smoke alarm fitted, advice on escape routes and what to do if a fire starts in their home. Or perhaps they need some more extra guidance to keep safe. Our dedicated team can provide a range of specialist equipment, such as fireproof bedding and smoke alarms for the hard of hearing, to help protect more vulnerable residents.”

Tips on Staying Safe from Fire: • Make sure you fit, and regularly test, a smoke alarm. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment in any home. • If you plan on using an open fire, make sure your chimney has been recently swept as build-up of soot and ash can cause chimney fires. • When going to bed, make absolutely certain that any open fire is either out, or pushed back into the grate and a guard used to prevent sparks setting light to carpets or furniture. • Interior doors should always be closed when going to bed as they can dramatically reduce the spread of fire. • Portable heaters should be dust-free and kept well away from anything that could catch fire. • Candles should always be placed on a non flammable surface, be away from soft furnishing like curtains and never be left unattended. It is far safer to consider using torches instead of candles. • Before using an electric blanket, make sure it is under 10 years old, check it is in working order and always follow the manufacturers instructions. For further information or to learn more about the free advice and services on offer to residents contact KFRS on 0800 923 7000 or visit www.3breaths.info. Children can also learn more about fire safety by visiting KFRS’s page for kids at www.firefighterfred.info.
