Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Happy new year and welcome to 2013, yes I know Christmas and New Year now seems a distant memory, but I hope it’s a great one. 2012 was certainly an eventfull year, first we had the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee where we showed the world our very British stiff upper lip by being determined to celebrate and enjoy ourselves whilst being soaked to the skin in persistent rain. Then came the Olympics with that amazing opening ceremony, followed by all those gold medals. I’m not a sporty person at all, other than winter sports, I’ve never really been that interested in watching it on tv, but this was something very different, I was captivated. From my point of view, the whole event, combined with the Para Olympics was totally inspiring, I was proud to be British. To finish off the year the Mayan Calendar was thought to predict the end of the world on the 21st December. What a relief to wake up on the 22nd and find that everything and everyone was still as it should be! My husband put a positive spin on this, he believes that the end of the Mayan Calendar signifies change, rather than the doom that others predicted. We’ve had enough doom and gloom recently, especially when it comes to the world’s finances, so lets hope that 2013 is a turning point and the beginning of a more prosperous, optimistic period of time.

at. I call them ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ plants and try to plant something more handsome near them - perhaps a glossy leaved, evergreen beauty like Camellia, or Photinia ‘Red Robin’ which has bright red young leaves, or plant a good structural focal plant in front of them – a neat box ball, or tidy-by-nature, low growing Hebe. That way, when you can’t get outside to smell the fragrance, at least there will be something attractive to look out of the window at.

spring along by planting some early season interest – that way even if the weather’s freezing, there’ll be something cheery out there to encourage us. You could go for an instant fix and nip to the garden centre for the first of the spring bedding and container plants, but if you do, be careful. There are lots of tempting little plug plants on display, in front of glorious photographs that show how they’ll look in the summer – if they make it that far. Most of them need to be protected from frost (until May that means), so unless you have a good place to keep (and cherish) them, stick to hardy plants like Polyanthus, Primulas and spring bulbs.

If you’re keen on growing vegetables (and have a greenhouse), you’ll have got going by now with some early sowings. Tender crops like aubergines and peppers need a long growing season in our dismal climate. I tend to sow alliums, early salads and a batch of broad beans and peas under cover (on a windowsill) to plant out next month, but there are some hardy broad beans – Aquadulce Claudia and peas – ‘round seeded’ (as opposed to wrinkled) that will withstand cold weather well. But don’t panic – this is just the start.

If your borders are looking bleak and bare,

then it could be time to fill the gaps with more permanent plants. Many of the late winter and early spring plants are scented (try a Daphne, Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’, Chimonanthes praecox or the shrubby honeysuckle Lonicera fragrantissima). The problem with some of these is that although they smell divine, they aren’t all that to look

Mowgli

Hello Everyone, Mowgli here! We hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. We got lots of lovely catnip infused treats and a couple of the pouches of food we get on special occasions. It was lovely! There is a lot to tell you about in our house. Firstly, we have now moved house. As I told you last month, we were looking forward to this but also a little nervous, especially Ebony. It turned out to be great fun! The actual moving day was a bit depressing as we were just shut in the bedroom of the new house but after that we were allowed to gradually explore each room. Ebony surprised us all by coping very well and within just 2 days it was as if she had lived there all her life. Clive was very proud of her so of course she has got even more attention than usual- I am sure this was her plan all along....

Anyway, the new house has a number of exciting features. Most of the floors are wooden and highly polished. This has made ping pong balls an awful lot more fun to play with and Clive and I have a new game where we slide from one end of the room to the other on the shiny floor. We both got into a bit of trouble from Jane over this as apparently we make the floor more slippery than ever, but it is such a good game we do it whenever she is not looking. Another good thing is all the windows to look out of and shout at the birds but the best thing is the amount of shelving all around the top of the wall just below the ceiling. Apparently the plan is to fill these shelves with books, but I have adopted these shelves as my own personal walkway so it is looking unlikely whether the humans will be able to put anything on them...... The best room for this is a very long room with exposed ceiling beams. I jump onto the dresser and then onto the top of the door and from there onto the shelving. I can then run round and round the room at a height no-one can reach...... over the tops of the curtains, over the fireplace. I start off by walking slowly and miaowing and then when someone comes to see what I am doing I puff up my tail and gallop around. The best thing is that

Pets if someone climbs up to get me down I can dodge out of the way at the last minute. When I eventually want to get down I just sit on top of the dresser and howl and someone comes running. A few days ago I actually tried to get down by myself. This didn’t go so well- it ended with 2 smashed lanterns, glass everywhere, a deep gouge out of the dresser and a sore back. Clive and Jane looked at each other knowingly and spoke about ‘making a plan’. I think I just need a special ladder! The other big news is that the baby has arrived and has come home! His name is Joshua and Ebony and I are doing our bit to look after him. Clive says he has never seen anything like it and that we are marvellous cats (you see- praise at last. Makes a change from being in trouble!) We both spend a lot of time sitting next to wherever Josh is sleeping and if he makes a noise we make sure we go and get one of the humans. We also make sure that if we hear him crying we go to wherever he is straight away and Ebony makes the most amazing chirrups to him. The only thing we are not enjoying is the lack of sleep at night- we are both still sleeping on the bed (this shows Josh who is really important in the house- he is in a crib next to the bed with a cat net and we are on the bed!) but we both get a bit fed up with the

screaming and burrow right down into the duvet! Anyway, we hope you have all been keeping your New Year’s resolutions so far and I look forward to reporting more of our chaos next month!

wit & wisdom Racism Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream ‘racism‛ these days. A customer asked… “In what aisle could I find the Irish sausage?” The clerk asks…”Are you Irish?” The guy, clearly offended says… “Yes I am, but let me ask you something. “If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?

The clerk says…”No,I probably wouldn‛t.” The guy says…”Well then, because I asked for Irish sausage… “why did you ask me if I‛m Irish?” The clerk replied…”Because you‛re in a Builders Warehouse”…

A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather‛s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. “What‛s it about?” he asked. “I don‛t know,” she replied. “I can‛t read.”

because she had no desire to wear the end result. I introduced her to crocheting flowers and she was hooked (!!!)

Simple Joys The Art of Crochet

Now she has resumed her knitting in small doses just so that she can make tea cosies on which to arrange her crocheted flowers! Joy offers home tuition in crochet and other needlecrafts and also holds workshops at her home in Pluckley

I learnt to crochet when I was about 8 or 9 www.simplejoys.co.uk 07792 622339 years old. I was taught by an elderly neighbour info@simplejoys.co.uk one glorious, long-ago summer. We used to sit together on her swinging garden seat under a beautiful, scented white rose intertwined with honeysuckle. She patiently taught me the intricacies of winding the wool around the hook and pulling it through to create the stitches. We crocheted squares in a multitude of colours with her left-over scraps of real wool.

12

As the years have gone by, crochet has been something I’ve dipped in and out of. A shawl made whilst I was a student nurse in quiet moments on night duty, pram blankets for the babies and dolls blankets for my daughter. I even crocheted a tiny shawl with sewing cotton and a fishing bait hook to drape across the bed in the doll’s house, as though its wearer had just tossed it aside and moved out of sight. Recently however, I have begun to experiment more. The beauty of crochet is that, basically, you work with only one stitch: if you drop it, it is not the disaster that it is in knitting because it is instantly picked up again and, if you don’t like what you’ve done, it is so very easy to just undo it and try it again another way. I have also learnt more about how to follow patterns – again, there is an advantage over knitting because crochet patterns are often given in both written and chart form. If you can’t understand one, you can usually work out the meaning from the other. I have an older friend who has spent many hours knitting the most beautiful jumpers and cardigans. The downside is that all the long hours of concentration have resulted in severe arthritis in her neck. I asked her if she had ever tried crochet and she replied that she hadn’t

Choosing fabrics for the home Patterned, textured or plain, subtle or spectacular, fabrics can transform a room. Our guide will help you sort the silks from the synthetics and the cottons from the corduroys, while giving you the lowdown on what to use where.

How to choose fabrics

18

Before buying fabric, ask for a swatch or, even better, borrow or buy a length of fabric that can be draped at the window or placed over a sofa or cushion. It is invaluable to see how the fabric looks in situ, at different times of the day and night. Ask these questions before you start: • How wide is the fabric? The wider it is, the better the value, and the less sewing will be required. 140cm is average. • How heavy is it? Heavier fabrics are usually too bulky for small projects, while lighter fabrics usually wear more quickly. • How durable is it? Fabric is divided into categories depending on whether it will be subjected to light, general or heavy domestic use. • Is it washable? And, if so, has it been pre-shrunk? • If it is patterned, what size is the repeat? Large patterns require more fabric so that you can match the repeats.

Types of fabric Fabrics are composed of natural or synthetic fibres, or blends of them, and made

using a wide variety of weaves. FIBRES Cotton can range from lightweight muslin to heavy canvas. It is the most commonly used fabric for home furnishings as it dyes and prints well, and is easy to care for. Linen has a lovely drape and lustre, is durable, but has a tendency to crease (hence is often mixed with other fibres). Nylon, or polyamide, is tough and resists abrasion, but tends to produce static electricity. Polyester is a very strong synthetic fibre that mixes well with other fibres to produce versatile fabrics. It can withstand high temperatures and frequent washing. Silk comes in intense colours and has an attractive, lustrous surface. Not as hard-wearing as other fibres. Viscose is made from wood pulp. It is hard-wearing and durable. Wool is breathable, warm and naturally water-resistant. Available in a wide range of thicknesses and textures, it varies from heavy sheep’s wool to fine cashmere. It will felt if washed at a high temperature.

WEAVES Bouclé has a looped pile. Corduroy features pile in stripes that may be narrow or wide. Damasks contrast matt and shiny areas of pattern and are usually rather traditional in style. Jacquards feature a complex, raised pattern. Moiré is a water-mark pattern, often found on silks. Plain weaves have a smooth surface. Satin is heavy with a lustrous surface, usually made from silk or polyester. Twill weave produces diagonal or zig zag lines on the surface. Denim is a heavy-cotton twill, for example. Velvet may be made from a variety of fibres and features a luxurious, soft pile.

What to use where UPHOLSTERY • Hard-wearing, tightly woven fabrics are best for most upholstery. Medium-to heavyweight cottons and cotton mixes, linen mixes and wools are all good, conventional choices, while corduroy, denim and low-pile velvet are

business In the best interests of the children… In another of our regular series on legal matters, this month Laura Hails, Chartered Legal Executive at Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors, talks about children issues Each year thousands of children experience the separation of their parents. We realise that many of our clients will be unsure as to how best to manage their separation whilst considering the best interests of their children. Divorce and separation generates a large level of stress in a person’s life and it is likely that children will have feelings about divorce and separation which will be very different from your own.

20

Many parents are able to agree between them how they share contact of the children and parents are able to agree any contact pattern that suits the needs of the children. When considering children matters, we refer to the Children Act 1989. The first priority is the welfare of the children and there is also a checklist of factors that have to be considered, which include, but are not limited to, the child’s age, sex, background, wishes and feelings and physical, emotional and educational needs. Unfortunately some parents will have difficulties in reaching an amicable agreement. If you cannot agree with whom they should live or how much contact they have, you may wish to seek advice. We are committed to a helpful, nonconfrontational approach, to take the conflict out of family disputes and to ensure the children maintain a healthy, loving relationship with both parents. As a Member of Resolution, we are mindful of the fact that during the separation process,

there will be a wide range of emotions and we therefore deal with matters in a conciliatory approach to achieve a solution based on the needs of the whole family, particularly what is in the best interests of the children. If you have any queries about children issues or any other family matter, please telephone me on 01580 762248 and I will advise you of the best route available to you in your particular circumstances.

Life Begins Taking a trip to your family’s past

by Claudia Leaf

When Elaine Thomas booked a week’s holiday in a remote cottage in Yorkshire, she had no idea that she was about to solve a mystery.

26

After several years spent researching her family history, Elaine - who lives in Kent - had discovered that her ancestors were land-owning farmers from the Richmond district of Yorkshire. She was eager to see where they had lived and died so she chose a pretty cottage in the hamlet of Easby as an ideal base from which to explore the area. Elaine had focused her research on a branch of the Dixon family, tracing the line back to the year 1695, and she was now intent on filling any gaps in her knowledge. She had been unable to find out where her great, great, great grandparents were buried but thanks to an extraordinary coincidence she discovered the answer lay only a short stroll away. A book left out on display in the village church gave the exact location of their graves in the churchyard. Elaine will never know what – or who - led to this uncanny revelation but she believes that luck and instinct can play a pivotal role in family research. Her interest in the subject began as a child, when her grandmother told her stories about older relatives. “Once grandma died, I found I was the only person in the family

with that knowledge. I wanted to know more, so I sent off for my grandma’s birth certificate. Although I’m not very good with the internet I looked up www. ancestry.co.uk and signed up for two weeks’ free trial.” Elaine was determined to follow the female line of her family although she knew it would be difficult because the surnames would not be consistent. Unable to progress beyond her great, great grandmother Mary, she worked on a hunch inspired by the census. “One of her children had the Christian name ‘Dixon’ and I thought that was unusual,” says Elaine. “I’d read in a magazine that mothers often christened children with their maiden names so the name would stay in the family.” When she entered ‘Mary Dixon’ into an online search, she was rewarded with information that enabled her to trace her roots back to the 17th century. Elaine’s top tips for starting your own research are to talk to older members of your family and write down every detail, then start to work backwards by requesting copies of birth, marriage and death certificates from the

appropriate local records offices. Valuable information can be obtained from ancestry search magazines and websites such as www.ancestry.co.uk and www. findagrave.com. She has also found the staff at records offices particularly helpful. The message boards of online networks such as www. curiousfox.com can be useful but Elaine warns that where the search concerns a common surname, names should be double checked against the census or other official records in order to ensure that the person in question belongs to the right family. Tracking down family records can be challenging, but for Elaine it has opened up a wealth of new opportunities. “If I hadn’t done this I would never have used a computer. I’ve also found that my interest in ancestry has given me wider interest in history. I can honestly say it has opened up a whole new life for me.”

Seasonal Delights Satay Vegetable Skewers Serves 4

Ready in 30 minutes If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.

28

Ingredients: • 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a preheated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying and add a little oil.

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges. Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred. Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

health & beauty Hello, may I introduce myself – my name is Sara Quested and I am pleased to say I have recently opened the new hair salon called Hair ReQuest in Sellindge. I began my career in hairdressing 15 years ago when I started a 2 week work experience course from school at a local salon, I was then taken on as a Saturday girl where I later qualified, and I haven’t looked back since!

30

I’ve had a varied and interesting career working in several well known local salons for several years until I decided to take my services mobile, as this fitted in with my family life and my young son at the time. I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed this time over the last 6 years and have built up a very loyal clientele, with the majority of my clients following me throughout my career moves. Many have become firm friends and I’m now cutting their husband’s, children’s and friend’s hair! When the opportunity came along to open my own salon I didn’t hesitate – it has always been an ambition to have my name over the door – which incidentally you will notice that it is the first part of my surname! I pride myself on offering a friendly, professional and modern approach to hair styling, but without charging “high street” prices. I’ve chosen to use Redken, having trained and used this high quality product extensively in the past. I’m really excited by my new challenge and hope to offer the local people of Sellindge and the surrounding area affordable, but professional hair styling, without the hassle of having to drive into town. All my new customers will receive a 10% discount, and I have introduced a loyalty card, which will give £25 off any product or service of their choice. Gift vouchers are also available to purchase. Please pop in for a coffee and a free consultation. Parking is available for 2 cars at the side of the salon, which is clearly marked, and also at the front of the shop entrance. I look foward to meeting you ~ Sara

Babes In The Wood A professional, first class agency born in 2001, offering a caring, personal, understanding service which you can rely on. All your childcare needs under one roof.

T: 01233 621213 M: 07957 684352 www.babesinthewood-ashfordkent-nwlondon.co.uk babesinthewood@talktalk.net Welcome, to Babes In The Wood. My name is Julie and I would like to introduce to you my Nanny Agency and Childcare Consultancy in KENT. Babes In The Wood was born in 2001 in St. John’s Wood, LONDON, when I had my first child. I had worked previously as a children’s nanny for 10 years. So I believed that I was highly skilled in the knowhow and knowledge to offer a successful service to others. I not only know what a nanny has to do, to deliver a fantastic and professional service but I can also relate to the worries and traumas that one can feel when seeking their ideal long term child carer. Children are precious and deserve the time and care when finding the perfect match. So here I have developed a personal agency for all child care requirements. I meet all my families personally, so that I can make a perfect match first time round, causing less disruption to the whole family. On the home visit I offer the opportunity to discuss your requirements fully and any queries with regards to employing a nanny or other child carer but most importantly you get to meet me personally. I interview all my nannies and child carers personally; I visit child minders at their homes. I do all the background checks. All the hard work is done for you by me! Testimonial from Mersham (Jan 2013) “Babes In The Wood were fantastic at understanding my slightly unusual work situation and found me child carers who fitted my requirements perfectly.” Visit my website to see what other satisfied clients have to say about my service: www. babesinthewood-ashfordkent-nwlondon.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you. I am more than happy to help. ~ Julie Please call on 01233 621213 or 07957 684352
