Welcome Hi everyone, Welcome to the July Issue, back in July 2005 the very first issue of The Village Directory was published. It is now nine years since that first edition, and I remember so clearly those nervous days after having sent the magazine to print, waiting to see how it would be received once it started to land on door mats. My little magazine was about to go into three thousand homes and I had no idea how it would be received - scary! Now, nine years on there are eight versions of the magazine going into a total of 60,000 homes. If someone had told me how many people it would eventually be delivered to it would have frightened the living daylights out of me, I wouldn’t have thought I could do it. A very big thank you to everyone for your continued support, it’s great to know that you are mentioning the magazine when responding to advertisers, this helps so much.

August Issue Deadline 10th July I would also like to say a big thank you to the businesses that support the magazine with their advertising. As I write we have just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, I say celebrate, we just about found time for a quick drink down our local. Our social life tends to be put on hold for the magazines around this time of each month. It seems that every social event in our family occurs during the first two weeks of the month i.e. deadline time. Thank goodness I have an understanding and supportive husband! Until next time have a great month

Garden Shed

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood

4

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them

with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

New Pet Grooming Service Launches in Westwell Leacon Dogs and cats can expect a warm welcome at Groomingdales, a new pet parlour near Ashford. Qualified pet groomer Jo Smith has opened the business at her home in Westwell Leacon, where the emphasis is on every individual animal’s wellbeing. From the moment the pet and their owner arrive, right through to the finishing touches, Jo makes everyone feel a part of the family at Groomingdales. After completing her training, Jo created a stylish and fully equipped facility in her garden, where pets can be treated in a quiet and tranquil environment. Every dog comes in through the front door of Jo’s cottage, where they have the chance to meet the two small family dogs, Jack and Lily, before heading out to the parlour for their unhurried treatment.

8

“When I’ve taken my own dogs to groomers, I’ve often found the environment to be very sterile and there has been a ‘quick in and out’ approach,” Jo says. “But my approach is very individual – I like the animals to be completely relaxed and stress-free. There aren’t crates full of dogs waiting to be treated; I deal with one dog or cat at a time and I’ll take breaks in the treatment to let them relax if need be. Also, while some groomers will do whatever the owner has asked in terms of cutting or colouring, I’ll only do what’s right for the pet – if they become too stressed, I won’t continue.” Services on offer at Groomingdales include a bath and blow dry, creative grooming such as colouring, nail trimming and a full groom. Jo also offers a new specialist paw treatment, during which paws are massaged with a moisturising butter cream. “People don’t realise how dry and damaged paws can become whilst walking through mud and water,” Jo says. “This treatment leaves paws really soft and nourished.” Jo also offers free puppy socialisation – any puppy under six months old can be brought along to Groomingdales to ‘sit in’ on a treatment session, even if the owner has not brought another dog for grooming. “The puppies can be brushed, to get them used to grooming or simply play in the room while I’m treating someone else’s dog,” Jo says. “It helps them to get used to the environment and being around other dogs.” To celebrate the launch of Groomingdales, Jo is offering a 10% discount on the first treatment for new customers – simply quote ‘Village Directory’ when booking. To book contact Jo on 07974 791907. You can also follow her on Twitter @GroomingdalesJo and find Groomingdales on Facebook.

Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space

By Katherine Sorrell

When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one.

10

Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way. Calligaris Quadro white lacquered bar table, £111; Calligaris Olivia solid wood folding chairs in wenge or beech, £80 each; all Lime Modern Living, 01892 512611; www.limemodernliving.co.uk.

By raising a child’s bed you create two rooms: one for sleeping, and one below for playing, studying, relaxing or for sleepovers. The same goes with an adult bedroom – if you have high enough ceilings, consider building a mezzanine sleeping space, leaving room underneath to use however you wish. Hobbies Why the Sewing Bee is Buzzing Louder Than Ever When you start out with a hobby it’s always difficult to predict the way your skills might develop in future, but it’s important to think ahead if you are investing in equipment. Because you will be starting with minimal skills, you may be tempted to purchase a sewing machine with simple, basic functions and later regret that you didn’t opt for one of the more expensive models. On the other hand there’s a risk that you’ll splash out on a costly, multi-functional machine and discover that you end up making nothing more challenging than cushion covers!

14

Perhaps it’s all part of the cult of nostalgia we’re experiencing at the moment, including shabby chic, home baking and handmade household accessories. Sewing is suddenly cool again, and that vintage Singer sewing machine that your mother banished to the garage all those years ago has recently returned to reclaim its place as a musthave item in UK homes. With TV programmes such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” commanding audiences of 2.7 million, it’s clear that sewing has once again captured the public’s imagination, and the trend looks set to continue. Of course, the recent climate of austerity has also played its part in this revival. Although shops selling ultra-cheap, disposable fashion have been a presence in our high streets for a number of years now, customers are slowly beginning to realise just how disposable cut-price fashion can be. When garments look stretched and worn after just a

couple of washes, it’s clear that buying cheap, mass-produced items can be a false economy. Making your own clothing is the answer to all those concerns about quality and durability, and there’s no better way to express your personality than to source your own fabrics, creating a fashion look that is unique to you. If you feel inspired to make your own clothes or home accessories then it’s advisable to start with one or two small test pieces, so you can get the feel of operating a sewing machine and working with fabric. So which machine should you buy? The old-style sewing machines mentioned at the beginning of this article are available to buy on Ebay, with prices ranging from £40 to £200 (for models incorporating a table). Alternatively you can purchase a new machine starting from around £200, although you will need to do your research carefully.

For this reason it’s best to start off with a brand of machine that offers the option for you to add functionality over time. Extra accessories for ornate stitching or overlocking seams can be purchased online, allowing you to undertake more complex sewing tasks as your confidence grows. When you’ve bought your machine the next step will be to get hold of a simple pattern and some fabric. Purchasing fabric can be expensive and as you stand there, with your brand new sewing shears poised for action, you may wish that you had someone on hand to guide you through your first attempt at making up a garment. Whether you are a complete beginner or someone who learned sewing years ago and just needs a refresher, it’s sensible to seek expert advice rather than go it alone. There is much to be said for joining a sewing course, where you can get instant feedback and where a tutor is always on hand to get

you out of any difficulties. In larger UK cities you’ll find plenty of courses available, priced from around £40 upwards. These tend to take place in fashion colleges, trendy sewing cafes or at adult education centres. However, if you live in a rural area you may find it more difficult to locate a suitable class: www. thesewingdirectory.co.uk has a list of local classes and sewing groups which you can search by county.

The alternative is to turn to the many helpful, explanatory blogs and ‘how to’ videos for the beginner available on the internet, as these don’t cost anything and are almost as good as face-to-face tuition. One such blog can be found at www. tillyandthebuttons.com, with well illustrated, step-by-step tutorials on everything from ‘setting up your sewing machine’ to ‘inserting a jacket sleeve’.

Sewing classes are a great place to make friends and pick up valuable tips that improve your work, but not everyone can afford to pay for lessons and sometimes learning at home is the only option. You can, of course, buy books that show you how to sew: ‘S.E.W. Sew Everything Workshop’ by

pounds over time when you are no longer buying clothes at high street prices and parents will particularly appreciate the economic benefits of making outfits for

their children. The sewing revival may have been driven by nostalgia for the ‘good old days’, but it’s underpinned by the growing realisation that skills in tailoring and making can be of real value to cash-strapped families today. By Kate McLelland

Cake and Bake Peach Gallette This divine summer dessert just couldn’t be easier to make – no flan tin and no baking blind! Make sure you have a good solid baking sheet to bake the galette on as this will ensure a crisp pastry base. You can replace the fresh peaches with drained canned peaches, if liked. 16

Ingredients:

1

• • • •

2

• • • • •

225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g unsalted butter, diced 100g ground almonds 4 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 2 large egg yolks blended with 2 tbsp ice cold water 6 large fresh, ripe peaches, skinned, stoned and sliced Beaten egg, to glaze 1 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped Vanilla ice cream, to serve

TIP To skin peaches, score a cross in the skin with the tip of a knife then cover with boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Drain and cover with cold water for a further minute – the skins should peel off easily.

Serves 6 - Ready in 50 minutes plus chilling

3

4

5

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar. Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet. Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Sprinkle over the rest of the sugar and serve warm or cold with scoops of vanilla ice cream.

9 Answers: Tinkaboo’s favourite food is biscuits. There are 5 jugs in Dolly’s kitchen.

Especially for you Tinkaboo!

1. Mix in all of the fluid ingredients, oil, water, eggs and honey, with the rolled oats. 2. Mash the bananas with a fork, then add to the mix. 3. Add 2 cups of flour, mix with a spoon then slowly add the rest of the flour (you may need more if it’s too wet and sloppy) 4. Once you are happy with the mix, tip it onto a floured surface and roll until 1/4 of an inch thick, thicker if you want a softer centre. 5. Cut out in your favourite shapes, put onto trays lined with greese proof paper. 6. Bake at a low to medium temperature, no higher, until golden. (Approx an hour) 7. Allow to cool, if you want to decorate, buy yogurt drops (available online or hobby craft stores), melt in a bain-marie and dip or drizzle over the squiss-kits. 8. Allow to set, they do not need to go in the fridge. Store in a cake tin or cookie jar.

Beauty Perfect Nails

By Helen Taylor cleaning, cooking, and all those other unavoidable daily chores pose a threat to nails, not to mention cold weather, regular hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Even so, it’s worth establishing a hand and nail care routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken an in-depth look at three of the most recent - and popular - nail services.

28

You might spend a lot of time and money buying-up and tryingout the latest skincare, hair care and cosmetic products, but do you pay as much attention to your nails? It’s certainly easy to overlook your hands and nails, but you really shouldn’t, because they’re often as noticeable to new people as your face; after all, a handshake is the first introduction. Un-manicured nails can really let the side down, especially when you’re otherwise wellgroomed and neatly presented. But there’s no denying that it’s hard to keep your nails in tip-top condition. Washing-up,

CND Shellac Nails Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudgeproof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. In fact, Shellac often stays looking so good that it only really needs to be removed when an obvious gap has emerged due to natural nail growth. It also offers the benefit of protecting your nails against breakage meaning you can keep the length much longer

than you might usually be able to. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option – even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again. Shellac isn’t suitable for everyone though; if your nails are weak, brittle or splitting opting for a set of Shellac nails - or any artificial nail enhancement - isn’t the best option. Nails and nail beds need to be healthy before application.

Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you. Bringing fashion to your fingertips, Minx have been a favourite with celebrities everywhere since stepping into the spotlight a few years ago. Offering a vast choice of designs in showstopping colours, patterns and prints, there’s no chance you’ll ever get bored when you choose a set of Minx nails. Minx work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are

beauty & fashion given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated - that’s why nails and Minx are heated before application begins. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. Whilst still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, it means they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days. Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off.

Long lasting Nail polish You might wonder why anyone would still have traditional nail polish when Shellac and Minx last so much longer. There are several reasons. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option.

Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux), so whilst it won’t be as instantly ‘set’ as Shellac or Minx, your finger and toenails will be complete dry and hard within a couple of hours.

And the choice of colours is much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it.

Have a Healthy Holiday By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

30

You’ve booked your holiday. You’re dreaming you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing. But health issues could turn it into a nightmare. Holidaying in the UK If you’re holidaying in the UK, everything is familiar, but still arrange travel insurance in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled. If you’re going off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast, wear appropriate footwear and take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing, a first aid kit and a map. Ensure everyone knows the route and remember you’ll be slower over rough terrain. Many fatalities are caused by ignoring these precautions. Check your chosen beach is safe for swimming, with no concealed rocks or dangerous sea creatures (there’s a useful guide to them here: http://bit.ly/1m9uFYJ). Holidaying Abroad Several weeks beforehand, read guidebooks, travel company information and specific precautions for your destination at http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk. Ensure you’re aware of: • Air travel health and safety Newborn babies, women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks in multiple pregnancy), or people who have recently had a stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma shouldn’t fly, nor should those with a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting the ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system. See your

doctor and check insurance t&cs. The air inside aeroplanes is very dry, so stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, (altitude increases its effects). Ask your doctor’s advice if you’re concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or you’ve given birth in the last two months. Reduce the risk of DVT by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated. Compression stockings can help if worn correctly. Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress. Food and water safety Practice good hygiene and pack sanitizer gel or wipes. If you’re unsure of water safety, boil it or treat it with purification tablets, or use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice cubes. Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food and avoid salads, shellfish, unpeeled fruit and icecream (unless it’s a major brand). Health precautions If there’s a malaria risk don’t take it lightly. Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and clothing (mosquitoes may bite through it). Wear long trousers and long-sleeved tops, particularly after dark. Antimalarial tablets must be started before you go and continued after you return. Take a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed. Vaccinations Again, requirements depend

on destination – check specific guidelines at http://www. fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel as some vaccinations are in several doses. Carry proof of vaccinations; some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should be free, but you’ll pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B. • Rules about prescribed medication Take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter including personal details, travel dates and medication details. • Healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card entitling you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care must be covered by your insurance. • Sun Protection Wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly.

Planning Your Estate? Don’t Leave it Too Late There’s a natural reluctance for younger people to think about death and getting older. It’s a fast-paced world we live in and thinking about the future is often put on the back burner. After all, talk of wills, inheritance tax (IHT) and estate planning seems far removed from your day-to-day life. But they are a vital part of financial planning and wealth preservation. Getting your affairs in order could save you and your family a great deal of money and heartache. Have you thought what would happen if the unspeakable was to happen and you died tomorrow? Have you, for instance, got sufficient life cover in place to take care of the loved-ones you leave behind?

32

But that’s not the only reason to take out life insurance. Many younger people are income rich and capital poor. Yet buying extra life insurance, beyond the amount that covers the mortgage, could provide a legacy for your heirs to fall back on. Life insurance also enables you to donate money to charity via your estate, while ensuring that your chosen heirs do not lose out. You can take out life cover equal to the amount you are going to donate, and this is paid to your chosen beneficiaries – again free of IHT. If you have excess income you could also consider gifting away some surplus income to avoid a potential IHT liability. After all, it makes sense to prevent an IHT liability before one is triggered and if income, which you don’t need, is gifted into a trust, it falls outside of your estate for IHT purposes. A core part of any estate planning is making sure that you have an up-to-date will in place. If you are a parent have you named a guardian in the event of your death? If you think your mother or sister will automatically receive custody of your child (or children) you are mistaken. Also, have you ever considered what would happen if you were affected by serious illness, disability or mental impairment in the future? It is not just your own estate affairs that you need to consider. If you are expecting to inherit

large sums of money it is worth checking that your parents or grandparents affairs are set up to mitigate as much IHT as possible as wealth is passed down through the generations. Some level of IHT may be unavoidable but there are ways to ensure that you are covered for any IHT liability that comes your way. Parents, for instance, could take out a whole-of-life assurance policy. The policy can be transferred to the beneficiary, say a son or daughter, who then pays all future contributions on their parents’ behalf. When the plan pays out, they will have a sum of money to pay the IHT liability. Talk of estate planning is not the cheeriest of subjects and it is easy to put something off that doesn’t affect you today, or even in the near future. But it is a vital part of financial planning and once dealt with you can rest easy that the loved ones you leave behind will be looked after. What is mediation? People in dispute with their neighbours often find it hard to talk to them or make them understand what the problem is. Christmas can also be a stressful time with noisy parties and parking issues with people visiting friends and neighbours.

This is when Mediation can help? Mediation provides a neutral third party to bring them together and find a way forward which is acceptable to both. Disagreements are sorted out confidentially without the trouble and expense of going to court. Using Mediation does not mean that you have complained about your neighbour to some authority which might make the disagreement worse. You are in control at all times. Mediators will never take action or do anything without your permission.

WHO ARE THE MEDIATORS? Ordinary people who have been professionally trained to help with neighbour problems. They are all volunteers they do not take sides, nor do they make judgements on the rights and wrongs of the issues.

WE CAN HELP? With disputes between neighbours, loud music, noisy parties, parking, dogs barking, fences, hedges and boundaries to name just a few. You may not feel able to talk to your neighbour about the problem – you may feel intimidated or perhaps you just do not see the point of complaining any more as nothing seems to change.

WE CAN HELP YOU If you contact us we will LISTEN to your complaint and give you the time you need to talk it through. ASHFORD MEDIATION SERVICE is an INDEPENDENT organisation and most of our services are FREE. Everything that is discussed is CONFIDENTIAL and IMPARTIAL. Ring Ashford Mediation Service on 01233 896237 (please do leave a message on the answering phone if out of hours) or e-mail: info@ ashfordmediation.co.uk. Registered charity No 1065625

business The Importance of M a k i n g Yo u r W i l l A Will is one of the most important documents you will complete during your lifetime. We all want to ensure that those persons we want to protect after our death receive what we want to gift to them and your Will is the only way to make this happen. Without a Will, you lose the opportunity to direct to whom your assets will pass on your death and also to appoint persons to act as your executors and distribute your assets in accordance with your wishes. A Will allows you to plan for the future and the protection of your assets as trusts can be included to consider both residential care costs and Inheritance Tax, to provide as much for your family as possible.

items such as jewellery that are important to you , and your Will allows you to gift these items to your loved ones A Will also allows you to state any wishes you may have for your funeral, and also allows you to make provision for any pets you may own. Without a Will, an unmarried partner or stepchildren would not receive any inheritance from you. If you are not married to your partner, regardless of how long you have lived with them, without a Will in place they will not be entitled to anything from your estate. If you are married, depending on the size of your estate and whether you have children, your spouse may not automatically inherit all your assets. If you have children, in your Will you can appoint guardians to care for your children if you should die whilst they are minors. It is important to choose the people whom you believe would make important decisions on their behalf whilst they are growing up. Without a will, any funds passing to your children would be inherited by them on their 18th Birthday. If you would prefer your children to inherit when they are older, this can be stated in your Will. You can also ensure that funds can be advanced to your children for their general upbringing and education before the age of 18. If you have any Step-children, or God-children, they will not inherit from you unless stated in a Will. Your Will should be drafted by a solicitor to ensure no ambiguity arises after your death which could prove costly to rectify. You should avoid making a “homemade” Will or one prepared by uninsured and untrained Will Writers. This article was written by Ann Coutts from Girlings Solicitors. Puzzle Time Adam Jacot de Boinod was a researcher for the television series QI and is the author of The Meaning of Tingo and Other Extraordinary Words from around the World, published by Penguin Books.
