Welcome Hi everyone, Welcome to the July Issue. As I mentioned earlier in the year, The Village Directory is 10 years old this year and this month marks its 10th birthday. It was back in June 2005 that I sent the July Issue for Aldington off to the printer and then sat down to ponder what the outcome might be. An article in this month’s magazine talks about re-inventing yourself, which thinking back, was exactly what I did. Giving up a good job in London after 20 years to become a full time “local” publisher. I had no publishing in my background whatsoever, I was inspired by a lady that had done the same thing and a longing to spend more time with my family. It was scary and unbelievably hard work (it still is at times), but the decision paid off. For anyone considering a re-invention, my advice would be to plan it carefully and be prepared to stick at it, success doesn’t come over night. It took a full year before I began to see real progress. I’m not one for taking big risks, I ran the magazine alongside my London job for 6 months before taking that leap of faith and commiting full time. Working for yourself is hard work, stressful and doesn’t suit everyone. I don’t have the benefit of sick pay or holiday pay, in fact holidays can be few and far between, but for me it’s all been worth it and long may it continue! On behalf of myself and every fledgling business promoted through the magazine I would like to thank you all for your continued support. Until next time, have a great month!

Do you Have a Passion for Music? Do you enjoy listening to classical, jazz or contemporary? Would you like to learn to play an instrument for yourself or encourage your child to develop their musical skills? Did you have some lessons in the past and need to brush up on your skills or would you just like to give it a go? I am an experienced Piano and Keyboard player (CRB checked) offering lessons in my family home which is on the outskirts of Biddenden. I can also visit homes locally to give lessons if you have a suitable instrument. My pupils range from age 6 to 80 and come with no experience, some previous experience or even with good accomplishment and just want to have someone to encourage them to try some new pieces. You help choose the pieces so that lessons are enjoyable and you have fun developing your skills whether you play pieces from classical, jazz or contemporary composers on the piano or the keyboard.

4

Some of my pupils choose to take exams and have been successful in passing practical ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall grades, some with distinction. I also teach music theory. I make music lessons enjoyable and for younger pupils I use visual aids to help teach them the basics of music. Young people who learn a musical instrument are said to have better concentration skills in their other areas of learning. I charge reasonable rates and can offer lessons at many different times Monday to Saturday. Exams • • • • • • • •

Consist of learning scales and arpeggios: the higher the grade the more you learn. Three main pieces of music to learn where you are given a choice of set pieces. Aural Sight reading Technical exercises Improvisation Musical Knowledge Some of these are optional

Keyboard Lessons • The lesson consists of learning chords in the left hand and the melody in the right hand. Music Theory Lessons • Music Theory is very important and I often include this in the lessons. • I can teach Music Theory as a separate lesson to help with GCSE or a graded theory exam. Always remember practice makes perfect and is the key to success!

Keeping Healthy in the Sun by Pippa Greenwood

6

There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct mid-summer-flop. You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this

late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and

you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foam-covered wire works really well for this. At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery mildew: keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary Aphids: remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide Leaf spots: just pick off the worst affected leaves

Rusts: pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide Caterpillars: pick off by hand or spray with a suitable biological or chemical control Keeping on top of these small problems is essential regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than

trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage. If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best. To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings.

FENCE PANELS

Competitions Fledgling writers are reticent about sticking their heads above the parapet. Even calling yourself ‘a writer’ can sound (and feel) pretentious. And that’s without my smoking jacket and quill pen. There can also be concerns about how good your work is. Entering writing competitions can be a productive way to circumvent all that angst. A good competition offers you everything you need to galvanise yourself into action. There will be a deadline, a word count or limit, and a theme or genre. This gives you boundaries to work within.

10

The rules should state whether there is any prize money and how it will be allocated, and whether the winners will be published in a printed anthology / online. Finalists may also receive a critique of their stories. Many competitions charge an entry fee, which funds the main prizes and any print publication. You can often view the previous year’s winning entries and finalists. This gives you the clearest indication of the standard and style that the judges were looking for. (Judges change, so it’s only a guideline.) Try reading your work aloud, which is a great way of identifying clumsily written text, and edit carefully before submitting your story. Win or lose, you’ve written something new or perhaps re-purposed material for the competition. Use any feedback to help edit your work for the next time. Here’s an example of a prize-winning story online that was a loser first time around - I made changes based upon a judge’s critique: http://tomorrow-projects.com/wp-content/ uploads/2014/12/Arc1-2_Perfect-Circle.pdf By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed! Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice.

Home & Interiors Glorious Georgian

By Katherine Sorrell mantelpiece, and then lovely floorboards, Turkish rugs, and furniture made from walnut and mahogany, with carved edges, stable and strong.’

12

You don’t have to live in a 250-year-old house to enjoy the timeless elegance of Georgian style. Refined and uncluttered, its symmetry, proportion and classicism looks good in all kinds of homes, says Katherine Sorrell It was the Georgians who made us modern? During the century or so following the ascent of George I in 1714, our towns and cities, and homes and gardens, were transformed and the inexorable rise of popular culture began. Perhaps it is part of a trend away from pared-down minimalism in favour of bolder colours, decorative surfaces and more intricate shapes, or perhaps it is simply the appeal of classic elegance – either way, it is not surprising that we find Georgian life and times, and especially its architecture and interiors, fascinating. But what was Georgian style? According to V&A curator Julius Bryant: ‘The prevailing mood of the period is one of classical revival, of symmetry, order, balance, space and calm – in contrast to Victorian clutter. The centrepiece of a room would be a fireplace with a prominent

This was, of course, the age of the master cabinet-maker: famous names such as Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite. The general preference was for fine, small, light pieces made from rich woods, often featuring decorative gilding, marquetry or lacquer. If you can’t afford Georgian antiques, look for Victorian or Edwardian replicas. As for fabrics, cottons and linens became extremely popular and a host of beautiful printed and woven patterns appeared, many of which are still available, including chintzes featuring large, bright florals, bold stripes, Chinese scenes and the monochrome images of toile de Jouy. On walls, either wood panelling or block-printed wallpaper would be perfect, or paint colours from the many historic ranges on offer today. Georgian ‘common’ colours included off-white, stone, grey, cream and a wide range of earthy tones. Generally speaking, the stronger the colour, the more expensive it was to produce, so some people added touches of pea green, olive, lemon or pale blue, while the very well off employed brighter shades such as pink, orange, straw, deep green, ultramarine and Prussian blue.

At the start of the Georgian era homes were very poorly lit, but by the turn of the century gas and oil lighting was the latest thing for those who could afford it, though candles were still the norm for most. This meant that decorative light fittings became fashionable. Period lighting can be tricky to get right; either seek out good reproductions or stick to simply, timeless modern fittings that won’t clash with other pieces. In many older homes, panelledwood shutters look just right at the windows, but otherwise simple curtains made from a suitable fabric work well. The later part of the Georgian period saw the introduction of French rod curtains that drew horizontally – the forerunners of our modern curtains. Last of all, to really get things right, add one or two typical finishing touches such as classical busts or statues, romantic porcelain figures, lacquerwork screens, rococo silver and Wedgwood ceramics. And ensure that your rooms are arranged with an emphasis on order and symmetry. You will no doubt appreciate how this gracious and tasteful style has become an essential element in our interior vocabulary. Care Home Conundrum: Responding To A Relative’s Complaints by Kate McLelland When I visited my 92-year-old mother at her residential care home recently, she wasn’t in a good mood. Her purse was missing and she was convinced that the cleaners were to blame: “They’ve stolen it! And I had thirty pounds in there.” It wasn’t until she stood up, ready to accompany me to the manager’s office, that I realised she had been sitting on it all the time.

14

It’s often hard to know what to do when someone who may be suffering from mild dementia or confusion complains about a care issue. Should you take their concern seriously or just put it down to their age and mental condition? Better safe than sorry Moira Wilson from Cumbria was worried when her elderly aunt kept insisting that a young male, carer – Jack - was bothering her.

“The home had a good reputation so I didn’t like to complain,” says Moira. “But to my great relief the manager told me that they had no male carers currently working there.” Moira’s decision to check out her aunt’s complaint – no matter how far-fetched it sounded – was undoubtedly the right course of action. Confusion in elderly people can lead them to make false

accusations but the same confusion also makes it easy for care workers to get away with poor standards of care and sometimes, actual abuse. Sending out a signal My mother – who is almost blind and has limited mobility – gets help with showering twice a week at her nursing home. When, on a number of occasions, she told me that she hadn’t been washed “Because the shower isn’t working”, I began to be suspicious. On some days it mysteriously refused to work, particularly when a certain carer was on duty. All it took was a friendly email followed by a brief chat with the manager to sort out the problem. Sometimes the very act of making an enquiry can signal to staff who are not pulling their weight that their actions are being monitored. New legislation to combat abuse Recently new legislation has been introduced in response to the Mid-Staffs and Winterbourne View abuse cases. The Care Act 2014 comes into force in two stages, between April 2015 and April 2016, providing a new statutory basis for safeguarding vulnerable adults and making it easier to prosecute managers

who have allowed an abusive culture to exist in their organisations. The Act also introduces a new, lower threshold for lodging a complaint with a local authority where abuse is suspected. An official enquiry can now be triggered if there is a “reasonable cause to suspect” abuse and this means that problems can be reported much earlier. The right time to complain Your elderly relative will inevitably have minor niggles about the care they are receiving but it’s important to keep listening. If you detect that an issue is causing real anxiety or distress, then you must act. If they are able to explain the problem, you should encourage and support them as they speak to the care supervisor or manager. If not, don’t be afraid to approach these people yourself: a good care home should welcome your feedback. Making a complaint is never easy, but it’s a small price to pay if it means that someone you love will receive better care and attention in future.

Cake and Bake Strawberry Shortcake Tarts Make the most of sweet and juicy British strawberries with these divine fruit tarts. If you don’t have time to make the pastry cream then use fresh ready-made custard or just top with sweetened whipped cream. 16

Ingredients: • 225g self-raising flour • 1tsp baking powder • 75g butter, chilled and diced

• 50g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • 2-3 tbsp milk For the Pastry Cream and Topping

• • • • • • • • •

2 medium eggs 25g plain flour 50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml milk 150ml double cream 175g strawberries 5ml lemon juice 1 tbsp icing sugar

Serves 6 Ready in 45 mins, plus cooling time

1. Preheat the oven to 190C, fan 170C, Gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Lightly butter 6 x 8cm loose-based fluted tartlet tins (measured across the base). 2. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough. 3. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the hot baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. 4. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan and heat the milk to almost boiling point then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper and leave to cool completely. 5. Whip the cream until softly peaking and fold into the pastry cream. Puree half the strawberries by pushing through a fine-holed sieve. Stir in the lemon juice and icing sugar. Slice the rest of the strawberries. 6. Spoon the pastry cream on top of the shortcakes. Top with the sliced strawberries and spoon over the puree. Serve within 2-3 hours of assembling.

TIP

The shortcake tart bases can be made and stored unfilled in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Barbecued Rack of Ribs Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of simmering water before placing them on the barbecue will ensure meltingly tender meat every time. This method also saves space on the barbecue as the final cooking time with the sauce is much shorter. Serve with a spicy chunky tomato salsa, if liked.

20

Ingredients: • 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) • 6 tbsp tomato ketchup • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Tip: Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill.

Help to Change a Child’s Life Beanstalk is a national charity which recruits and trains volunteers to give individual help to children aged 5 – 11 years who find reading difficult and need some extra one-toone support. The sessions in school with the children are relaxed, happy times to help build the child’s confidence and show them that reading can fun. We talk, read and play games together. If you could spare 3 hours each week during school term time, enjoy reading and

How can you protect yourself from future financial claims? In another of our regular series on legal matters, Laura Hails, Chartered Legal Executive at Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors, looks at the issue of belated financial claims after divorce There has been a lot of media interest recently in the story of a couple who divorced in 1992, with the husband now finding himself facing a financial claim from his ex-wife. This is the case of Mr Vince and Ms Wyatt. They had one child and during the marriage the couple had very little money. Years after their divorce, Mr Vince found significant financial success, establishing his own company and becoming a multi-millionaire. Ms Wyatt’s financial position, however, had not improved. You may be wondering how Ms Wyatt can make a claim after such a long period of time. As the parties’ financial claims had never been dismissed the Court had no choice but to allow 28 her claim to be considered. The Court has to consider all the circumstances of the case and Ms Wyatt is not barred from claiming simply due to the long delay. Clients are often under the misconception that, after the divorce is finalised, their financial claims have been dismissed. They also believe that if they have agreed matters between them, then there is no need to formalise it. In some cases, clients feel that if there is no money to be shared between the parties, then there is no need for a formal Court Order. These clients are surprised when I tell them that their financial claims against each other remain open, unless they obtain a Court Order dismissing them. You can protect yourself from a future claim by obtaining a Court Order within divorce proceedings, which records the financial agreement reached and, more importantly, dismisses potential future financial claims. You never know what might happen in the future and this case is a stark warning to divorcing couples to seek legal advice and ensure they are protected in future by getting an order.

Laura Hails – Chartered Legal Executive So, if you would like some initial advice about divorce or separation, financial implications following the breakdown of a relationship, or any matters regarding family law, please feel free to call Amy, secretary to the family department, to arrange an appointment, or just for some more information on 01580 762248.

Are You Ready To Reinvent Yourself? by Kate McLelland

30

Whether it’s Walter White – a physics teacher turned drug dealer in the famous TV series Breaking Bad, or Julia Roberts beginning her journey towards enlightenment in the film Eat, Pray, Love - in recent years we’ve been bombarded with fictional, middle-aged characters who have decided to reinvent themselves. There are lots of real-life examples, too: a high-profile executive turns down a highpaid city job to become a sheep farmer in Wales, or a dowdy older woman is transformed into a worldfamous singer. In fact, we see so many people forging new lives that it’s almost become a cliché. The three ‘Rs’ of reinvention When you reach middle age it’s natural to look back over your life and make a mental tick-list of the things you have, or haven’t, achieved. This in turn often kick starts a realisation that it’s time to start a new page. There may be a number of reasons for this decision: your children may have flown the nest, your job

may have ceased to interest you and your relationship has probably become a little stale. It’s understandable to want a complete change, but you should be aware that it takes courage and effort – not to mention a reasonable amount of money – to make a major readjustment. Before you take any action you should consider the three ‘Rs’ that can help you decide if you’re ready to face the next chapter. Resilience: when people launch themselves into a dramatic new way of life, few actually stop to consider whether they are emotionally ready to do so. If you lack resilience then new routines, different faces and unfamiliar places can leave you feeling anxious and depressed, rather than revitalised.

How do I know if I have resilience? Ask yourself how you have coped with similar changes before. Do you enjoy new beginnings? Do you like meeting new people and facing new challenges? If the answer is yes, then you’ll probably be fine.

Reliance: while turning your back on unsuccessful relationships or dead-end jobs can be a positive move, things can quickly fall apart if you cut yourself off completely from the old life you have known. When you move to that new job or new place, make sure you have a support network in place to help if you encounter any unexpected problems along the way.

What does ‘reliance’ mean in practice? You don’t have to be needy, asking for help at every twist and turn of your new journey, but neither should you be too proud to ask for help if you need it. Successful re-inventors strike a balance between independence and knowing when to call on others for help. Renewal: perhaps the hardest part, when it comes to facing a major change in our lives, is letting go of some of the roles we have played for years. That includes informal roles such as full-time mother, husband or wife just as much as the professional job titles we’ve relied on for our self-esteem.

Even leaving a destructive relationship can lead to a feeling of loss or vacancy in our lives: it may have been a negative influence but the relationship provided a structure that is now missing.

How should I handle renewal? Reacquaint yourself with the person behind the ‘label’: this is your time to be who you really are – don’t allow yourself to be defined by others and be confident that the life skills you’ve built up over the years will help you move on successfully.

The Old School House Indian Cuisine

Fully Licensed Restaurant & Takeaway

If you feel you are able to face the three ‘Rs’ then your midlife reinvention plan can be put into practice in three simple steps: Make sure that your plan is achievable: there’s no point planning to move to a Tibetan monastery if you don’t have the bus fare to your nearest town. Quality is better than quantity when it comes to planning your future and sometimes a small, carefully planned adjustment can feel as good as a major change. Let others contribute to your plans: sometimes your friends have a better idea of what’s good for you than you do. Share your ideas for your new life with them and listen to their views. Then keep them close by while you negotiate those lifestyle changes. Take charge of change: once you start the ball rolling by making change happen, other changes – perhaps some that you had not intended - may follow on behind. Stay on top of what is happening in your life and most of all, make sure that you enjoy the ride. Change can be great, but don’t underestimate the emotional (and financial) impact of a big upheaval in your life. However, if you’ve made careful plans and understand how you’ll cope with the challenges ahead, there’s every chance you’ll go on to enjoy a successful new life.

Water Water is one of the most basic needs for human life. Although we can survive without food for around three weeks, we can’t manage without water for more than about three days. The mantra of ‘drink eight glasses of water a day’ is repeated again and again as the ultimate goal for good health. But actually it’s a myth and it’s not really known where it came from. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be freezing or sweltering? Your water intake doesn’t even have to come from ‘water’. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks – and even teas and coffees, despite being slightly diuretic – are all sources of fluid. Again another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true. Although the obvious thing to say is to drink when you are thirsty, as we age the ability to feel thirst deteriorates. So you should be conscious of this, and particularly if you have been active in warm weather, increase your fluid intake for the rest of the day. But don’t go from one extreme to the other; if you feel you have become dehydrated make an effort to drink little and often. It can be dangerous to consume a very high quantity of fluid in a short time. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more is to pay attention to your urinary habits. If it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your urine is dark yellow, then it is time to increase your fluids.

health & Lifestyle

Treating Sunburn Although the obvious way to prevent sunburn is to avoid going out in the heat of the day at all, it is both necessary to have a little sun for our health and a pleasure to feel those rays on your skin. Although most people will use a sun cream or lotion as a preventative measure, studies have shown that many people do not use enough sunscreen to provide adequate protection. If you do find that you have caught more sun than you intended, it’s important to treat your skin to minimise the damage. As with any burn the skin will be overheated, so the first thing to do is to find a way of cooling the area. Apply a flannel soaked in cold water or take a lukewarm shower or bath. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids as dehydration will only make matters worse and avoid alcohol. For mild sunburn using a moisturising lotion which contains Aloe Vera or a specially formulated after-sun lotion will both cool and rehydrate the area, and relieve the feeling of tightness. For more intense sunburn ask your chemist about a hydrocortisone cream and take over the counter painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to reduce your temperature. If your sunburn is severe, or it’s on a young child, you should ask for advice from your doctor or – in the worst cases – visit Accident and Emergency. If your sunburn is accompanied by other symptoms such a fever, dizziness or vomiting you could have sunstroke. It is essential in this case that your temperature is lowered and as a minimum you should seek advice from NHS Direct on 0845 46 47
