Welcome Hi everyone, Welcome to the July Issue. As I mentioned earlier in the year, The Village Directory is 10 years old this year and this month marks its 10th birthday. It was back in June 2005 that I sent the July Issue for Aldington off to the printer and then sat down to ponder what the outcome might be.

An article in this month’s magazine talks about re-inventing yourself, which thinking back, was exactly what I did. Giving up a good job in London after 20 years to become a full time “local” publisher. I had no publishing in my background whatsoever, I was inspired by a lady that had done the same thing and a longing to spend more time with my family. It was scary and unbelievably hard work (it still is at times), but the decision paid off.
C S Painting & DecoratingServices Services Paul SmithInterior Plumbing & Exterior
For anyone considering a re-invention, my advice would be to plan it carefully and be prepared to stick at it, success doesn’t come over night. It took a full year before I began to see real progress. I’m not one for taking big risks, I ran the magazine alongside my London job for 6 months before taking that leap of faith and commiting full time. Working for yourself is hard work, stressful and doesn’t suit everyone. I don’t have the benefit of sick pay or holiday pay, in fact holidays can be few and far between, but for me it’s all been worth it and long may it continue! On behalf of myself and every fledgling business promoted through the magazine I would like to thank you all for your continued support.

Keeping Healthy in the Sun by Pippa Greenwood
4
There is something lovely about this part of the summer. The veg plot tends to be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But sometimes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can be looking ever-so-slightly sorry for themselves. There is often a distinct mid-summer-flop. You planted up your flower beds and numerous pots and containers to make them look good but how can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding is essential, particularly for anything growing in a container. Often crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fertiliser content is pretty well used up after a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. At this time of year I would still feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but I suggest you resist the temptation to feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the time winter comes; this
late growth is then very prone to frost damage. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers so every time you feed your tomatoes make up a bit of extra feed and pop it onto flowering plants. I tend to buy concentrated tomato food by the mini-tanker full as this works out much more economical! Make sure that everything is deadheaded regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. On soft stemmed plants you may be able to make to do it using your thumb nail, but a pair of sharp scissors or similar often makes for the quickest, neatest and least messy job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads and it will make a huge difference to the performance you see the plants put on over the next few weeks. I am a great believer in the ‘hair cut’ approach where perennials are given a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Do this promptly and follow it with a good feed and
you can often encourage a second, later flush of flowers too. If plants have become a little too tall or there has been a lot of rainfall they can literally flop over, clogging up the lawn on borders next to the grass, and generally looking a real mess. This is easily solved if you check that stakes and other supports are still doing their job and re-position them if necessary, taking care not to snap any flower stems in the process. You may even find that you need to add a bit of extra support or tie in a few of the taller or more wayward stems – the foam-covered wire works really well for this. At this time of year many flowers succumb to common diseases. This is how to deal with them: Powdery mildew: keep the plant well watered at the base but avoid wetting the leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide if necessary Aphids: remove with a strong jet of water, introduce ladybirds or spray with an insecticide Leaf spots: just pick off the worst affected leaves
trying to pull out a massive, long-rooted triffid that has already done a lot of damage.
Rusts: pick off the worst affected leaves, try to keep the foliage dry and spray with a suitable insecticide
If the weather is dry, regular watering will also help to keep your flower beds and containers looking their best. To minimise water wastage and the risk of those delicate petals becoming scorched, I suggest that you should only water in the evening or, if this is not possible, very early in the morning. A less frequent but thorough drenching is a lot more beneficial than very frequent but light waterings.
Caterpillars: pick off by hand or spray with a suitable biological or chemical control Keeping on top of these small problems is essential regular checks should allow you to take prompt action, so avoiding too much damage occurring and often meaning that you do not even need to spray. Weeds tend to be growing rapidly too, so try to remove these as they make for a lot of competition for water, food and even light. Pulling them out or hoeing them off when they are still fairly small is a much easier and more efficient way to deal with them than

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed! Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back.
6
The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice.

Are You Ready To Reinvent Yourself? by Kate McLelland Whether it’s Walter White – a physics teacher turned drug dealer in the famous TV series Breaking Bad, or Julia Roberts beginning her journey towards enlightenment in the film Eat, Pray, Love - in recent years we’ve been bombarded with fictional, middle-aged characters who have decided to reinvent themselves.
10
There are lots of real-life examples, too: a high-profile executive turns down a highpaid city job to become a sheep farmer in Wales, or a dowdy older woman is transformed into a world-famous singer. In fact, we see so many people forging new lives that it’s almost become a cliché. The three ‘Rs’ of reinvention When you reach middle age it’s natural to look back over your life and make a mental tick-list of the things you have, or haven’t, achieved. This in turn often kick starts a realisation that it’s time to start a new page. There may be a number of reasons for this decision: your children may have flown the nest, your job may have ceased to interest you and your relationship has probably become a little stale. It’s understandable to want a complete change, but you should be aware that it takes courage and effort – not to mention a reasonable amount
of money – to make a major readjustment. Before you take any action you should consider the three ‘Rs’ that can help you decide if you’re ready to face the next chapter. Resilience: when people launch themselves into a dramatic new way of life, few actually stop to consider whether they are emotionally ready to do so. If you lack resilience then new routines, different faces and unfamiliar places can leave you feeling anxious and depressed, rather than revitalised.
How do I know if I have resilience? Ask yourself how you have coped with similar changes before. Do you enjoy new beginnings? Do you like meeting new people and facing new challenges? If the answer is yes, then you’ll probably be fine. Reliance: while turning your back on unsuccessful relationships or dead-end jobs can be a positive move, things can quickly fall apart if you cut yourself off completely from the old life you have known. When you move to that new job or new place, make sure you have a support network in place to help if you encounter any unexpected problems along the way.
What does ‘reliance’ mean in practice? You don’t have to be needy, asking for help at every
twist and turn of your new journey, but neither should you be too proud to ask for help if you need it. Successful re-inventors strike a balance between independence and knowing when to call on others for help. Renewal: perhaps the hardest part, when it comes to facing a major change in our lives, is letting go of some of the roles we have played for years. That includes informal roles such as full-time mother, husband or wife just as much as the professional job titles we’ve relied on for our self-esteem. Even leaving a destructive relationship can lead to a feeling of loss or vacancy in our lives: it may have been a negative influence but the relationship provided a structure that is now missing.
How should I handle renewal? Reacquaint yourself with the person behind the ‘label’: this is your time to be who you really are – don’t allow yourself to be defined by others and be confident that the life skills you’ve built up over the years will help you move on successfully. If you feel you are able to face the three ‘Rs’ then your midlife reinvention plan can be put into practice in three simple steps:
Make sure that your plan is achievable: there’s no point planning to move to a Tibetan monastery if you don’t have the bus fare to your nearest town. Quality is better than quantity when it comes to planning your future and sometimes a small, carefully planned adjustment can feel as good as a major change. Let others contribute to your plans: sometimes your friends have a better idea of what’s
good for you than you do. Share your ideas for your new life with them and listen to their views. Then keep them close by while you negotiate those lifestyle changes. Take charge of change: once you start the ball rolling by making change happen, other changes – perhaps some that you had not intended - may follow on behind. Stay on top of what is happening in your life
How Your House Can Solve Your Money Worries
and most of all, make sure that you enjoy the ride. Change can be great, but don’t underestimate the emotional (and financial) impact of a big upheaval in your life. However, if you’ve made careful plans and understand how you’ll cope with the challenges ahead, there’s every chance you’ll go on to enjoy a successful new life.
An equity release plan can unlock the money tied up in your home and let you afford the lifestyle you want. You’ll stay in your home forever. You’ll still be able to leave a legacy to your kids, grandchildren, or favourite charity. If you’ve got a mortgage, or car loan, you can pay it off. You can have holidays, a walk-in shower, stair lift, or new glasses... And you’ll still own your own home. To find out more call Howard at Kent Home Loans 01233 220267 e:howard@kenthomeloans.co.uk
Equity Release is a lifetime mortgage or home reversion scheme. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. A typical fee for arranging this type of business would be £500.

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets

ello everyone, Mowgli here. Summer at last! Hope you are all enjoying it. Ebony and I are making the most of it and sunbathing inside the French windows in the bedroom. Bliss to curl up in a sunny patch. We have actually had an interesting time looking out of the French windows- there has been a wren nesting in the wisteria and 3 tiny wrens took their first flight this week. Clive and Jane watched them with us and we all got a bit excited. I frankly thought they looked quite interesting to play with and was trying to encourage them to come inside. Clive was worried about them as they weren’t that good at flying and they kept landing in fairly daft places. After quite a few scary moments they all made it back into the wisteria and the mother wren stopped flying around and looked exhausted. I think Jane sympathised with her!
you that everything else will be the same- 20 minute appointments with plenty of time to chat (Clive tells me most vets have only 10 minute slots. Can you imagine Clive managing that? He talks far too much! If I ever have to go to the vet I am demanding at least 20 minutes attention if not more- just to admire my spots, stripes and beautiful blue eyes if nothing more…….).
A
lso this week a lovely dog was brought into the clinic as a stray. He didn’t have a microchip so he is now being looked after at Lord Whisky. We really hope his owner finds him but please remember- microchip your pets and keep the details updated! I was microchipped as a baby and even though I moaned at the time (and got some treats out of it) it really isn’t bad!
W
ell, Clive tells us that there are a few changes at the clinic at the moment. Andy is retiring, which is sad but he as it will let him spend more time with his Siamese cats KiKi and KoKo I think Ebony and I have to approve. He will still be at the clinic from time to time mending things (did you know he can mend almost anything? I get told off all the time for being clumsy. Not my fault of course. Humans just leave things in silly places. Like picture frames on mantelpieces, plates on dressers and mugs on the worktop. When the inevitable happens and I break something even Josh chants ‘give it to Grandad….’) and filling in as holiday cover. Leah the nurse is going on maternity leave for a few months (don’t worry- Clive says she’ll be back!). Ebony and I need to send a note to her cat Miffy I think about how to cope with crying babiespaws over the ears time! There is also a new vet at the clinic, Laura Beth, as Roland has left. Laura Beth specialises in critical care cases which sounds good to us. Clive seems to think it is great too. So there you are- no changes for years and all of that this month. Clive asks me to reassure

Cake and Bake Strawberry Shortcake Tarts Make the most of sweet and juicy British strawberries with these divine fruit tarts. If you don’t have time to make the pastry cream then use fresh ready-made custard or just top with sweetened whipped cream.
Ingredients: 16
• 225g self-raising flour • 1tsp baking powder • 75g butter, chilled and diced
• 50g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • 2-3 tbsp milk For the Pastry Cream and Topping
• • • • • • • • •
2 medium eggs 25g plain flour 50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml milk 150ml double cream 175g strawberries 5ml lemon juice 1 tbsp icing sugar
Serves 6 Ready in 45 mins, plus cooling time
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, fan 170C, Gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Lightly butter 6 x 8cm loose-based fluted tartlet tins (measured across the base). 2. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough. 3. Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the hot baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. 4. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan and heat the milk to almost boiling point then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper and leave to cool completely. 5. Whip the cream until softly peaking and fold into the pastry cream. Puree half the strawberries by pushing through a fine-holed sieve. Stir in the lemon juice and icing sugar. Slice the rest of the strawberries. 6. Spoon the pastry cream on top of the shortcakes. Top with the sliced strawberries and spoon over the puree. Serve within 2-3 hours of assembling.
TIP
The shortcake tart bases can be made and stored unfilled in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

As we stood chatting in the kitchen, she exclaimed: “My goodness, your oven is sparkling!” I smiled to myself, about to take credit for the sparkle coming from my gleaming cooker – but honesty got the better of me. “I had Oven Wizards round yesterday to clean it for me” I told her. “I’ve heard of them” Jean replied “Were they any good?”
18
Well, I was only too happy to tell! The service was fantastic from start to finish. My oven was looking shameful, so I emailed Oven Wizards to make enquiries and received a reply almost straightaway. The price was competitive and the process well explained. 3 days later, the chap arrived bang on time as agreed. He looked over the oven, explained what was going to be done and set about work. He removed his shoes, covered where he was working and gave my oven the deepest clean it had ever received. He removed the doors, separated the glass, cleaned the door seals, the light cover and put all the shelves in a tank in his van. 2 hours later – it was as if a new oven had been placed in my kitchen! There was virtually no smell to the process, he was so tidy you’d never know he’d been and my oven gleamed inside and out! The shelves were sparkling silver, the glass crystal clear and the inside silky clean. It was money exceptionally well spent and I will certainly be having them back on a regular basis to keep my oven gleaming (and to keep my friends commenting on what a clean house I keep!)” Many thanks to Mrs Ascott from Ashford, for this wonderful testimonial. If you’d like to book Oven Wizards to make your oven sparkle – please give us a call on 01233 210662 or email Maidstone@ ovenwizards.com. We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Ashford Decorative & Fine Art Society Who We Are The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) is a leading UK based arts charity which opens up the world of the arts through a network of over 360 local Societies across the country.
22
One of the most flourishing of the local societies is here in Ashford. ADFAS, the Ashford Decorative & Fine Art Society, has about 300 members, drawn mainly from the villages and small towns around Ashford. With inspiring monthly lectures given by some of the country’s top experts, together with days of special interest and arts visits, ADFAS is a great way to expand your knowledge of the arts and make new friendships. Our Lectures Our lecture meetings take place in Aldington Village Hall, usually on the third Tuesday of each month, from September to June. Meetings begin at 10.15 with coffee and time to book visits and special interest days. Lectures begin at 11.15 and last about an hour. The lectures are given by experts in their fields, all of whom have gone through a rigorous selection process by NADFAS. The lecture meetings are included in the membership fee. There is plenty of free parking around the hall. The lecture programme for 2015/16 can be found on our website www.ashforddfas.org.uk Our Visits and Special Interest Days We arrange day trips to museums, galleries and places of interest. Starting from Ashford, we travel as a group, by train or coach. We hold one special interest day each year, usually in Aldington Village Hall. These days
are a mix of lecture and practical workshops, to allow members to delve more deeply into a particular topic. Recent subjects have included “The Art of Dining in Victorian England” and “Glass of the 19th and 20th Centuries”. In May 2016 we will experience “Painting for the Petrified”. Young Arts ADFAS provides children and young people with exciting opportunities to get involved in creative arts activities. Our work with young people builds a lasting enthusiasm for the arts and an awareness of arts heritage and its conservation. We fund one-off Young Arts Projects ranging from running arts awards to funding artists in primary schools. We also run a group for members’ children aged 8-16, who meet in school holidays for art activities & cultural visits. Church Recording Church Recorders promote recognition and preservation of the rich artistic heritage in places of worship by recording the contents of churches of all religions. Participating churches are presented with an illustrated book detailing each item and its history. Copies are also sent to national institutions. Recent projects were Great Chart and Boughton Aluph churches. How to Join Membership is open to all and costs £36 per annum, to include the programme of ten lectures and coffee. If you are interested, please contact our membership secretary Christine Corfield through our website www.ashforddfas.org.uk. You would be welcome to just come & try a lecture, contact Christine on 01233 720241 to book a seat.
