Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, This is a big month for me, I am so excited because the magazine now has it’s own smartphone app. This is a big step into the 21st Century for the magazine. Read all about it inside this edition, I hope all you fellow smartphone users find it useful. I would like to apologise for the error in last month’s crossword puzzle, unfortunately the developer supplied a new grid but omitted to change the clues from the previous month’s edition. I suppose these things are sent to try us, but on the bright side, it did give me the opportunity to chat to a number of readers and receive some very positive comments regarding the magazines. Thank you to everyone that contacted me, if it had gone un-noticed I would have been quite concerned about the value of the crossword puzzle entry. I also received a criticism last month for quoting page numbers in my intro when the pages were, supposedly, not numbered. The page numbers have for some time been positioned on the sides of the pages, so as not to encroach an any other information. I realise it’s not the standard position and is therefore easy to overlook. I will consider alternative options, but if anyone would like to submit ideas for improvement to the magazine, whether it be content or layout, please do, I’m all ears!

The Garden Shed

June by Jo Arnell, Woodchurch Container gardening can be a very rewarding way to garden; indeed, if you’re short of space, have a large paved area, have difficult soil, or perhaps mobility problems, it may be the only way to garden. And instant effects are easier to achieve in containers, allowing you to change your planting schemes regularly as the seasons come and go.

6

There’s no need to restrict yourself to annuals and bedding when choosing what to grow in a container, although some plants adapt better than others to being grown in smaller spaces - large trees and shrubs – unless made into Bonsai specimens will not thrive in a small pot for long. Dwarf trees and shrubs, on the other hand, are ideally suited to life in a more restricted environment and if they’re fussy about site and soil, may do far better in a pot.

are being washed out through the bottom of the pot. Feed flowering plants with a high potash fertiliser, such as tomato feed or comfrey/nettle tea and feed the rest with a balanced fertiliser containing equal parts of potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. Many ready bagged composts contain nutrients, but these will only last around 6 weeks or so (less if you’re soaking your plants each day with water). Slow release fertiliser sticks and granules are also available, an excellent idea for those of us prone to neglecting our pot plants. You can grow almost any plant in a container, providing you look after it properly, But remember – a container grown plant relies on you as much as a pet in a cage – its fate is entirely in your hands… For garden advice and design ideas contact Jo Arnell on 01233 861186 www.hornbrookmanor.co.uk

Mowgli

10

Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. Now it is well and truly summer! Ebony and I are spending lots of time by the French windows in the bedroomnot only is there a lovely patch of sun but Clive has put a couple of bird feeders up just outside so we are in heaven. Bird watching in the sun. Doesn’t get much better! We have seen all sorts of birds and I chatter away to all of them but the ones that really annoy me are the herring gulls. They are enormous and just so loud (they actually remind me of baby Joshua). I make a lot of noise and sit up very straight. I am pleased to say that I have managed to see them all off so far. Anyone who says that cats have an easy time of it doesn’t know the half of it...... we patrol and protect the cottage even in our relaxation time. There have also been quite a few wild birds at the Clinic recently. Over the years they have had all sorts- the collapsed Boxing Day buzzard that was eventually released, the barn owl chicks that Chris looked after until they went to a specialist wildlife unit, the heron that tried to peck the nurses’ eyes, and on one unforgettable day a collapsed kestrel that a lady had been keeping warm down her vest. Ebony’s eyes get a bit wide and round when anyone brings that story up. She says she wouldn’t let anything with such a sharp beak anywhere near her anatomy. On another note I was very pleased recently when Jane changed the curtains in the sitting room. Our new curtains were made out of several pairs of large curtains that we had in our old house. One of these curtains was my favourite place to sit- inside the lining on the windowsill over the radiator. It was bliss with nice warm air blowing over me! I was very pleased to see my favourite old curtain (even

if it is a bit smaller now!) and I leapt straight into it on our new windowsill over our new radiator, and climbed into the lining - like old times. For some reason Clive and Jane were quite amazed by this but they don’t give us cats enough credit. We know what is going on and we all have our favourite things! Ebony always knows when someone gets out her favourite pink blanket to curl up with on the sofa- she is there in a flash, purring away. And I always know where my giraffe toy that I got given as a small kitten is- I can often be seen carrying it around and then going to sleep with it. I think we all have special things. Even those stupid goats (and goats are so stupid!) are attached to a silly old saucepan that came with Dennis when he was rescued. It is used to measure out their goat mix when they are fed and if they get the chance they like to sit lovingly next to the saucepan, cuddle up to it and lick it. You see- I rest my case. Cuddling a saucepan? Almost as mad as a kestrel in the vest!

Seasonal Delights Cheese, Bacon & Onion Pie

Makes 8 Slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use flavoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Pastry: 14

• • • • •

225g plain flour 1 tsp mustard powder Pinch of salt 115g butter, chilled and diced 4-5 tbsp iced water

Filling: • 175g smoked bacon pieces • 4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 200g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • Beaten egg, to glaze • Tomato salad, to serve (see Tip)

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with finely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour between your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then flatten into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper. Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

business Plan Ahead with a Lasting Power of Attorney As part of our regular series on legal matters, Gill Snow of Tenterden law firm Pengelly and Rylands looks at Lasting Powers of Attorney.

24

recommend that anyone making an LPA has it registered, so that if it is ever needed it can be used without delay.

If you’ve ever worried about what would happen if you were unable, through mental or physical incapacity, to handle your own affairs a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) could be the answer and as the process of making and registering an LPA is now easier and quicker than ever it makes sense to do it now.

If an individual loses capacity without a registered LPA in place application must be made to the Court of Protection for a deputy Gill Snow – Solicitor at Pengelly & Rylands to be appointed to look after their property and financial affairs. This can be a lengthy and costly process.

The LPA replaced the old Enduring Power of Attorney in 2007 and allows you to appoint someone you trust to help you manage your finances or welfare. If you were ever to be unable to physically deal with the bank or building society your attorney would be able to do so on your behalf as well as claim benefits for you and even sell your property and if you were ever to lose mental capacity they could make decisions for you.

Our firm can guide you through the whole process of making and registering an LPA and do as much or as little as you wish. I would recommend making an LPA whilst you are fit and healthy as it will give you the peace of mind of knowing that someone you trust will be able to make decisions on your behalf if the need ever arose. If you would like to discuss this please contact me or Rosalind Johnson on 01580 762248.

There are two types of LPA available, one which deals with property and finance and one which deals with personal welfare. If you appoint an attorney under a welfare LPA they will be able to make decisions on your behalf about where you live, how you live and even medical treatment, if you were unable to make those decisions yourself. Making an LPA is fairly straightforward, and involves completing an 11 page form. You need to decide who you will appoint as attorney, whether you will have one or more attorneys and whether you wish to restrict the decisions which your attorney can make. Under the terms of The Mental Capacity Act 2005 your attorney must consult with you, whilst you have capacity and if ever you were to lose mental capacity must act in your best interests. You will also have to choose a certificate provider. This is an independent person you have known personally for at least two years or a professional, who must talk to you about the LPA and ensure you are aware of what you are doing. You must also choose someone to be notified when the LPA is to be registered. Lasting Powers of Attorney can only be used once they are registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. This takes approximately 9 weeks and costs at present, £130 to register each LPA. I would

The BBQ Season

9.

After months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it’s the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ an irreversible chain of events are set into motion:

And most important of all: 10. Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. 11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed her night off. And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women....

4. 5.

26

6.

7. 8.

Important again: THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table

Crossword Solution

3.

The woman buys the food. The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along withthe necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. Here comes the important part: THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes
