Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, This is a big month for me, I am so excited because the magazine now has it’s own smartphone app. This is a big step into the 21st Century for the magazine. Read all about it inside this edition, I hope all you fellow smartphone users find it useful. I would like to apologise for the error in last month’s crossword puzzle, unfortunately the developer supplied a new grid but omitted to change the clues from the previous month’s edition. I suppose these things are sent to try us, but on the bright side, it did give me the opportunity to chat to a number of readers and receive some very positive comments regarding the magazines. Thank you to everyone that contacted me, if it had gone un-noticed I would have been quite concerned about the value of the crossword puzzle entry. I also received a criticism last month for quoting page numbers in my intro when the pages were, supposedly, not numbered. The page numbers have for some time been positioned on the sides of the pages, so as not to encroach an any other information. I realise it’s not the standard position and is therefore easy to overlook. I will consider alternative options, but if anyone would like to submit ideas for improvement to the magazine, whether it be content or layout, please do, I’m all ears!

The Garden Shed June

by Jackie Witcher Tenterden Horticultural Society

Firstly before I write a single word I really must apologise for the lack of my report in April. I had actually done it, but was due to go on holiday the following day and completely forgot to send it through to Debbie for inclusion in the mag. I can assure you that it wasn’t excitement that made me forget as we were caravanning with our “granddogs” in Berkshire and if you recall, the weather was absolutely freezing, Siberia comes to mind. It was so cold that one day we took the dogs over to Thatcham common for a walk and my eyeballs froze up!!!! Not nice at all. Anyways a huge thankyou to all who contacted me to see if I had been ill and was I recuperating well! And to make up for it this report is a little longer than norm!!

6

May saw me digging up the last of my leeks. Many people lift and store leeks in late autumn, but I have no space to do this so leave them in the ground until required. They seem to last quite well and I have lost very few. I made good use of them in soups etc, but cleaned up and sliced they do keep very well in the fridge or try freezing them. If you want to eat them all up try this lovely easy recipe. Saute finely sliced leaks with a sprinkling of thyme in butter until just cooked but not browned, season well with salt and pepper and leave to cool. Roll out a pack of bought puff pastry (make it if your really clever), and cut into 6” squares. With a sharp knife mark a ridge ½ “ round the outside. Generously spread Philadelphia inside the square (use any flavour you like, garlic is good), then, spread the leaks on the top. Place on a greased baking tray and brush a little milk around the outside. Cook Gas 7 (or equivalent), until golden. Delicious with a light salad.

I have read last years report for June and back then we had a hot early spell in Spring, this year it was just cold and dismal. Consequently flowers once more held back. I have had a good blossom on my crab apple tree, but once more very few on my “cordons”. I’m wondering if I had pruned these fruits trees incorrectly, though I have re-read the instructions and had followed them to the “T”. Each of them, plum, apple, and pear are pruned differently, but I was quite careful to prune each as instructed, so perhaps the weather has had a lot to do with it. We Now, to report back on a few things. The shall see when and if I get a fruit set and the returning lilly bulblets are doing extremely well, and crop

have been potted on once more. They are up and it looks like I shall have a few flowers. But is it worth all the hassle when lilly bulbs are quite reasonable to buy? I suppose if you have the time and room to keep growing on the bulbs to flowering size, yes. And of course there is the satisfaction of having “plants for free” On the other hand if you don’t have the necessary time needed to do so then no. Just as well let the lilly cultivate itself in the pot, split and pot on. You may not get as many plants but the satisfaction is still there. It is quite important to split and repot just about all plants that are container grown. Not only because they become pot bound, but the soil they are in will become exhausted and will need replenishing. I did this to all my fuschia recently which are grown in containers. Depending on the size of the plant and how much it has grown, it is not always necessary to rehouse into a larger pot. Remove the plant from the pot and gently tease away much of the soil from the root area and from around the top. Be gentle, we don’t want to damage the plants root system. Put back the drainage crocks in the base of the pot, then a layer of fresh compost. Place the plant in the pot and put in more compost, tapping the pot carefully to settle it in and around the root area. Feed the compost into the pot, tapping as you go until it is filled, making sure that the compost is at the same level at the top of the plant as it was before. Give it a nice watering to settle the compost around the roots. The plant will certainly appreciate the attention! Before my coffee I must tell you a tale. Husband as many of you know is a plumber and quite recently was engaged on a job installing a new bathroom. He had removed the majority of the old suite and now it was the turn of the WC. He removed the cistern, then the pan itself but could not budge the waste pipe. He pulled and tugged at it, but it would not move, so he took a peek inside and saw what he thought was a piece of wood. He eventually managed to get the waste pipe off but try as he might, could not remove the “wood” which was very fibrous. He eventually traced this back down the pipework, and what he though was a piece of wood turned out to be the root of one of the Please Mention The

the garden trees planted in the garden area! This root had broken into the salt glaze waste pipe and had travelled up to the second story of the house. Obviously with a constant supply of water “etc” the tree thrived. But imagine. Had the owners not decided to replace the bathroom, where the root would have been in a years time!!! It doesn’t bear thinking about!! So be warned before you plant that lovely pale green leylandii hedge, beech or yew tree, think. Just how far does the roots grow?? Hmmm that’s nearly put me off my coffee and cake, but I am made of sterner stuff! A nice slice of Madeira cake, topped with sugared lemon slices awaits me, so on goes the kettle and my feet are up ready!!! JW

Seasonal Delights Cheese, Bacon & Onion Pie

Makes 8 Slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use flavoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Pastry: 12

• • • • •

225g plain flour 1 tsp mustard powder Pinch of salt 115g butter, chilled and diced 4-5 tbsp iced water

Filling: • 175g smoked bacon pieces • 4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 200g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • Beaten egg, to glaze • Tomato salad, to serve (see Tip)

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with finely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour between your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then flatten into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper. Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

Beauty Make the Most of Your Make-Up - Your Questions Answered

How can I ensure the best finish and coverage from my foundation? It is important to find a foundation that is suited to your skin type as well as your requirements. Liquid foundations work best for most people because you can apply as much of it or as little of it as you like. Your foundation will work best and last longer - if it’s applied to primed skin. Always ensure that you cleanse, tone and moisturise your face first and then apply a primer to create the ideal base. health & beauty for making sure I get it right? A lot of blushers can look very unnatural and harsh, so it’s very important to choose the right colour. Avoid bright pinks and reds or any other loud hue and instead select more neutral shades in peachy, soft pink tones. Remember that your aim when applying any make-up product is to enhance your natural beauty, so keep that in mind when applying your cosmetics and ensure you always aim to create a natural look. Blusher should be applied to the apples of your cheeks. To find them, look in the mirror and smile, then sweep the product evenly over that area. Be sure to keep colour to the outer part of your cheeks though as you do not want it to be placed too close to your nose.

A great way to create a bright, wide-eyed look is to line the inner rim of your eyes with a good quality white eyeliner pencil. This will help to immediately brighten up the eyes and draw attention to them, making them appear bigger. You can also use a white eyeliner pencil as this will really enhance the colour of your eyes too. Eyelash curlers are an essential tool for creating this sort of look, because they are fantastic at opening up the eyes. Curl your lashes, then apply a few coats of mascara to set them in place.

don’t suit more mature women. Is this correct and why? Matte eyeshadows are definitely best suited to mature women because they create a much more natural and flattering finish on the eyes. On the other hand, satin, shimmer or frosted varieties tend to highlight even the finest line or wrinkle. by Helen Taylor

Plan Ahead with a Lasting Power of Attorney As part of our regular series on legal matters, Gill Snow of Tenterden law firm Pengelly and Rylands looks at Lasting Powers of Attorney.

recommend that anyone making an LPA has it registered, so that if it is ever needed it can be used without delay.

If you’ve ever worried about what would happen if you were unable, through mental or physical incapacity, to handle your own affairs a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) could be the answer and as the process of making and registering an LPA is now easier and quicker than ever it makes sense to do it now.

If an individual loses capacity without a registered LPA in place application must be made to the Court of Protection for a deputy Gill Snow – Solicitor at Pengelly & Rylands to be appointed to look after their property and financial affairs. This can be a lengthy and costly process.

The LPA replaced the old Enduring Power of Attorney in 2007 and allows you to appoint someone you trust to help you manage your finances or welfare. If you were ever to be unable to physically deal with the bank or building society your attorney would be able to do so on your behalf as well as claim benefits for you and even sell your property and if you were ever to lose mental capacity they could make decisions for you.

Our firm can guide you through the whole process of making and registering an LPA and do as much or as little as you wish. I would recommend making an LPA whilst you are fit and healthy as it will give you the peace of mind of knowing that someone you trust will be able to make decisions on your behalf if the need ever arose. If you would like to discuss this please contact me or Rosalind Johnson on 01580 762248.

There are two types of LPA available, one which deals with property and finance and one which deals with personal welfare. If you appoint an attorney under a welfare LPA they will be able to make decisions on your behalf about where you live, how you live and even medical treatment, if you were unable to make those decisions yourself. Making an LPA is fairly straightforward, and involves completing an 11 page form. You need to decide who you will appoint as attorney, whether you will have one or more attorneys and whether you wish to restrict the decisions which your attorney can make. Under the terms of The Mental Capacity Act 2005 your attorney must consult with you, whilst you have capacity and if ever you were to lose mental capacity must act in your best interests. You will also have to choose a certificate provider. This is an independent person you have known personally for at least two years or a professional, who must talk to you about the LPA and ensure you are aware of what you are doing. You must also choose someone to be notified when the LPA is to be registered. Lasting Powers of Attorney can only be used once they are registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. This takes approximately 9 weeks and costs at present, £130 to register each LPA. I would

Finance The Longest Holiday By Arwyn Bailey

18

Most of us shy away from considering our later years and what they might bring. There may be the joy of watching our family grow and develop with grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, but understandably we do not like the idea of becoming incapacitated. However, we should start thinking about what can be termed as the “longest holiday” of our lives sooner rather than later, as it is now clear that the government will not be funding the ongoing costs of any care that might be required. The reason for the government’s stance becomes clear when examining some of the facts. According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, in 1992, 14.2% of the London populace were aged 65 or more. In areas where a large number of residents are retirees, such as within the county of East Dorset, this figure was running at a rate of over 24%. The average percentage of people within this grouping for the whole of the UK, in 1992, was 15.8%. By the year 2033, estimates show that this figure will have increased to 22.9%. As the state is not going to assist in any meaningful form regarding ongoing care needs, we need to consider the cost of buying care as this is also rising. For example, maintaining professional quality care in one’s own home is now running at around £13.68 per hour. This means that just two hours of care each day mounts up to around £200 each week. Furthermore, full time fees in a care home now average at just over £27,000 a year rising to over £38,000 for nursing home fees. These fees are just for a basic level of care. To have any form of “luxury” is an additional cost. Here are some tips that will enable you to start planning for the future. 1. Check your pensions, ensuring that you have current information for all of them. 2. If you have not done so already, you should complete a BR19 form and send it off for a

Please Mention The

State Pension assessment. The reason for this, particularly for women, is that it will be assumed that your NI contributions would have continued if you had not stopped work in order to care for your children. However, the benefits agencies will not know of this and your past situation unless you inform them. Taking this action will enhance your state pension benefits. 3. Realistically consider what your ISAs and other savings might be worth. Monitor your investments regularly with a professional adviser. 4. Think about when your mortgage will be repaid, along with any other commitments. Put income that you have released, when loans are repaid, towards ISAs and pensions for your future. 5. Start thinking of your house as a commodity that might have to be used to fund care needs in the future. 6. Consider a special form of trust to ring fence the equity of your house. This can protect your home from local authority means testing when you qualify for care. 7. Review your Wills and the position regarding inheritance tax. 8. Review whether your property is owned as Tenants In Common or under Joint Tenancy as this is important in this arena of planning (Scottish law varies in this regard). 9. Seek independent financial advice from an appropriately qualified professional, and appoint an adviser on a fee basis to advise you. We all hope that we will remain independent and fit and healthy, but this will not be the reality for some of us. The facts before us may not be favourable and planning for our longest holiday may take many years to achieve. Although our finances might be under pressure at this time, doing something now is going to be better than doing nothing.

Life Begins An Actor’s Life at Last...?

By Kate McLelland

When 76 year old actress Patricia Loveland appeared in Dustin Hoffman’s recent film ‘Quartet’, it was a remarkable achievement for this former midwife, who signed up for drama school at the age of 60. For many older people Patricia’s success will be the spur to launch their own professional stage careers. Others may be encouraged to join an amateur theatre group.

20

Peter Bressington helps to run the Lindley Players, an amateur theatre society with 350 members based in Whitstable, Kent. He says that the group is always looking to recruit members of all ages, but he is aware that many people are put off by open auditions: “If people are nervous about performing they can become involved in other ways, such as selling ice creams or painting scenery.” In order to understand the level of commitment required, Pru Page, Club Secretary of Bocking Theatre Club in Essex, recommends that new members have their first experience of being on stage as part of the chorus of a pantomime or summer show: “New members should be prepared to learn lines and take part in regular rehearsals but some are shocked by the amount of time they have to dedicate to the production.”

Pru says that learning a theatre role can be stressful for older people, whose memories may not be as effective as they once were, but she believes that the more her members become used to it, the easier it becomes. She also recommends the social aspects of joining a theatre group: “I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had through the club. Once you’ve shared a dressing room with someone – not to mention a few production disasters – you can’t help but become close.” If amateur theatre doesn’t appeal, or if you already belong to an amateur group and want to go professional, then what’s the best advice? A course at an accredited drama school (list available from www. dramauk.co.uk) is probably the best option if you want to go professional. Many drama schools will take mature students for courses that last between one and three years. During that time you will work intensively on voice production, movement and acting. You’ll need an open mind and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

If student life is not for you, you can try approaching actors’ agents directly, but before you begin your search you will need a set of high-quality portrait shots. Be prepared for rejection unless you have a unique ‘look’ that lends itself to character roles. Even then you may find yourself auditioning for TV ads rather than strutting the stage at the National Theatre. Those who are lucky enough to be taken on by a reputable agent can expect to pay commission of around 10%-12% on each job. Actors usually have to pay their own travel expenses to attend auditions and purchase a subscription to online casting directory The Spotlight. However, the performers’ union Equity claims that at least two-thirds of actors are out of work at any time. With so much unemployment in the performing arts, the dream of taking up a professional stage career can often turn to dust, so it’s reassuring to know there’s always a local amateur company ready to give you the chance to tread the boards.

Bring Me Sunshine Add extra space, make the most of precious sunshine and bring the garden into your house. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory.

Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. If you choose a bespoke design you’ll pay a great deal more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Remember that unless a conservatory is well finished and appropriate to your property, it may detract from rather than add to its value. Size, siting and aspect A simple plant room or occasional-use home office can be squeezed into quite a small space, but for a useable room such as a sitting room, dining room or playroom, allow at least eight to ten metres of floor area. Overall, ensure that the proportions of your conservatory suit how you’re going to live in it and complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid

obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? If possible, try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while southfacing ones can overheat. Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, in a colour and style that matches or complements that of the main house. More recently, however, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and is often made to stock lengths so it can be systembuilt quickly and easily. It isn’t an environmentally friendly choice, however, and its modern look can be inappropriate for a period property. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older

properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential to reduce heat loss from a conservatory at any time other than mid-summer. The best glazing combines a lowemissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argongas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, antisun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You may wish to place

radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either of the warmwater pipe or electric cable variety, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue it is perfectly possible to install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house. Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need to be able to provide a cool waft of air in your conservatory. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open at the necessary time, with a sensor to close them if it starts to rain. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air

to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan. Shading Not just necessary for privacy, blinds also provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If the latter is a problem, your best bet is solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. The blinds you choose will have an enormous impact on the style of the room as a whole, so take your time choosing a look that’s right for you. Remember to ask how easy it is to clean your chosen blinds, and consider whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic

the home

conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. For further information, look at www. planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority. By Katherine Sorrell

The BBQ Season

9.

After months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it’s the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ an irreversible chain of events are set into motion:

And most important of all: 10. Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. 11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed her night off. And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women....

The woman buys the food. The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along withthe necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. Here comes the important part: THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Private Escort Care Service

Our Private Care Service carers can come to your house; help assist you with an outing in either your car or theirs. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
