Welcome

Aug/Sept Issue Deadline 1st July

Hi everyone, Welcome to the June Issue, and as we enter the season for fete’s, picnics and summer fairs there’s plently to keep you occupied in the summer sunshine (hopefully!). This month I introduce a new “Kids Corner to the magazine featuring Dolly Doodles and the land of iDoo-B-Doo. The creators of this new feature are pleased to announce that they have just signed a new TV development deal with animation studio Flix Facilities, makers of Postman Pat, Old Jack’s Boat, and Rupert Bear, to name but a few. We wish them the very best of luck and hope that in the not too distant future Dolly Doodles and Tinkaboo capture the hearts of children everywhere. In the meantime I hope you enjoy this new feature and maybe pay a visit to the land of iDoo-B-Doo at www.idoobdoo.com.

Garden Shed

Plotting a Vegetable Garden

by Pippa Greenwood

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible.

As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag. I find the quality of

the garden the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundytinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered

spot as do sweet peppers. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Pet Care

Travelling to Europe with your Pet

6

Caring vets for all your pets, horses and farm animals

If you wish to travel with your dog or cat to Europe you will need a pet passport. This is a much more straight forward procedure following the harmonisation of rules across Europe.

Veterinary Centre

The first step is to have your cat or dog microchipped. We advise microchipping for all cats and dogs, and from April 2016 it will be compulsory for all dogs in England to be microchipped. The Lady Dane Veterinary Centre is currently offering free microchipping for all DOGS in association with the Dogs Trust.

01795 532180

The next step is rabies vaccination. Only one vaccination is required, but we feel that a course of 2 injections give your pet the best immunity. We normally do these 4 weeks apart. A pet passport can be issued after the rabies vaccination and this will be required at any port as proof of vaccination (the photograph is optional). You are able to travel 3 weeks after the date of the first vaccination- this applies to travelling out of the United Kingdom. On return to the United Kingdom you need to have your dog treated for tapeworm and this must be administered and signed in your passport by a veterinary surgeon at least 1 day (24 hours) and no more than 5 days (120 hours) before your return journey. This does not apply if you are travelling from the Republic of Ireland but a pet passport is now required. To maintain your pet passport a booster injection will be required and this is most

usually every 3 years but will depend on the vaccine used. We would advise you have a discussion with a veterinary surgeon about your travel plans as additional vaccinations or parasite control may be required. Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary will hold its 43rd Open Day on Sunday the 20th July from 11am to 4pm. The Sanctuary, an entirely independent charity, founded by the late Veronica Huthwaite in 1970, is the largest for cats alone anywhere in Kent. We care for up to 200 homeless cats and kittens at any one time and take in and find new homes for over 300 each year. Our Open Day allows visitors to make friends with as many of the cats who are willing to cooperate, and hopefully some of those visitors will come back and welcome a new feline companion into their home. Visitors will be able to view Magpie House, the enclosure which accommodates up to 60 feral cats, many rescued from London streets, who are not adaptable as household pets. There is also a separate Sanctuary for cats who test positive for the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. These cats can be homed but only as indoor cats where they do not come into contact with other non affected cats.

Please Mention The

This year we welcome owls and tortoises on show and also homeless dogs from Frandham Kennels, River. Applause for Paws Dog Agility Club will be providing a ‘have a go agility’ for dog lovers who wish to attend with their dogs. There will be stalls selling cakes, jams, plants, books and pet related novelty items all made or given by Sanctuary supporters. Reflexology and face painting will also feature. Refreshments including the renowned strawberries and meringues will be available all day. Parking is free and entry is £1 for adults or 50p for children or OAPs. We are located at Green Lane, Rhodes Minnis, Canterbury, Kent, CT4 6XU. Telephone: 01303 862243. Normal visiting hours are 10am-1pm or 2pm4pm seven days a week, no appointment necessary.

Cake and Bake Lemon Curd Cookies Crisp and buttery with a tangy lemon flavour these delicious home-made cookies taste divine. You can change the flavourings if liked, try orange zest with fine shred marmalade or replace 1tbsp of the flour with cocoa powder and fill with chocolate and hazelnut spread for a moreish choc and nut version! 8

Ingredients: • 50g butter, softened • 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest • 85g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • 175g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 4 tbsp good quality lemon curd • Icing sugar, for dusting

TIP The chilled dough will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. Leave at room temperature for about 20 minutes to allow the dough to soften a little before rolling out otherwise it may crack.

Makes 16 - Ready in 30 minutes plus chilling

1 Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Beat in the lemon zest and egg then sift over the flour and mix to a crumbly dough.

2 Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead on a floured surface until smooth. Flatten to a disc shape, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 45 minutes.

3 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°F/gas mark 4. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment.

4 Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm thickness and using a 6cm round cookie cutter stamp out 16 circles, re-rolling the dough as necessary.

5 Place the circles of dough on the baking sheets. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of lemon curd in the centre of each circle then pull up two sides of the each circle and pinch together tightly to seal. Chill in the fridge for a further 30 minutes.

6 Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes until pale golden. Cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar.

What’s The Alternative: Osteopathy Origins and Principles Osteopathy is used to diagnose, treat and prevent health problems. It’s based on the principle that good health depends on all parts of our body - bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue – working harmoniously. Osteopaths do not use drugs or surgery. Instead they use manipulation, massage and stretching of joints and muscles to improve blood and nerve supply, ease pain or tension and increase flexibility, encouraging the body to heal itself. Usually they treat back, shoulder or neck pain or muscle and joint conditions, but some osteopaths claim to treat other conditions, including asthma.

While osteopathy uses some conventional medical techniques, not all osteopathy practice is based on scientific evidence. But its proven efficacy against lower back pain has earned it a recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a back pain treatment. There’s also some evidence that it helps help shoulder, neck or lower limb pain, and recovery after hip or knee operations.

Pyjama Walk

Having an Osteopathy Treatment Osteopathy sessions last around 30 minutes. During the first session, the osteopath will discuss symptoms and general health before carrying out a physical examination. The osteopath should then either suggest a treatment plan, or advise the patient that their condition isn’t suitable for osteopathic treatment. While most osteopathic techniques – massage, stretching and articulation (movement of the joint through its natural range of motion) - are gentle, manipulation of the spine can be forceful, involving short, sharp movements which may cause a loud but harmless clicking noise. None of the movements should cause pain unless an inflamed injury is being treated; if they do, tell your practitioner.

Hidato

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it, you solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Starting at 1 and finishing at 49, track your way from one square to another, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, placing consecutive numbers into the empty squares as you go. Some numbers are already given.
