contacted me, if it had gone un-noticed I would have been quite concerned about the value of the crossword puzzle entry. I have had one or two reports of readers not receiving their magazines, if at any time this happens please do let me know, I report this back to Royal Mail and they investigate to resolve the issue. I’ve found their customer service extremely good so it’s certainly worthwhile letting me know, while they investigate I’ll pop a copy in the post for you. Until next time, have a great month.

Hi everyone,

the garden

The Garden Shed June by Jo Arnell, Woodchurch Container gardening can be a very rewarding way to garden; indeed, if you’re short of space, have a large paved area, have difficult soil, or perhaps mobility problems, it may be the only way to garden. And instant effects are easier to achieve in containers, allowing you to change your planting schemes regularly as the seasons come and go. There’s no need to restrict yourself to annuals and bedding when choosing what to grow in a container, although some plants adapt better than others to being grown in smaller spaces - large trees and shrubs – unless made into Bonsai specimens will not thrive in a small pot for long. Dwarf trees and shrubs, on the other hand, are ideally suited to life in a more

4

restricted environment and if they’re fussy about site and soil, may do far better in a pot. Watering You may find yourself watering plants in containers up to 3 times a day, depending on the size of pot and the weather, so think carefully about how much time you have to devote to watering. There are automatic watering devices available that can be attached to a timer and pots that sit within a reservoir of water. Use a mulch on top of the compost to help conserve water (and cut down weed growth). Make sure that the containers don’t get waterlogged, especially in the winter. Raising the pots onto feet (or bricks) will keep them free draining. Feeding During the growing season plants in containers will need feeding, especially in the spring and summer, when they are being watered copiously and many of the nutrients are being washed out through the bottom of the pot. Feed flowering plants with a high potash fertiliser, such as tomato

feed or comfrey/nettle tea and feed the rest with a balanced fertiliser containing equal parts of potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. Many ready bagged composts contain nutrients, but these will only last around 6 weeks or so (less if you’re soaking your plants each day with water). Slow release fertiliser sticks and granules are also available, an excellent idea for those of us prone to neglecting our pot plants. You can grow almost any plant in a container, providing you look after it properly, But remember – a container grown plant relies on you as much as a pet in a cage – its fate is entirely in your hands… For garden advice and design ideas contact Jo Arnell on 01233 861186 www.hornbrookmanor.co.uk

Bring Me Sunshine Add extra space, make the most of precious sunshine and bring the garden into your house. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory.

8

Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. If you choose a bespoke design you’ll pay a great deal more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Remember that unless a conservatory is well finished and appropriate to your property, it may detract from rather than add to its value. Size, siting and aspect A simple plant room or occasional-use home office can be squeezed into quite a small space, but for a useable room such as a sitting room, dining room or playroom, allow at least eight to ten metres of floor area. Overall, ensure that the proportions of your conservatory suit how you’re going to live in it and complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid

obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? If possible, try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while southfacing ones can overheat. Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, in a colour and style that matches or complements that of the main house. More recently, however, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and is often made to stock lengths so it can be systembuilt quickly and easily. It isn’t an environmentally friendly choice, however, and its modern look can be inappropriate for a period property. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older

properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential to reduce heat loss from a conservatory at any time other than mid-summer. The best glazing combines a lowemissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argongas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, antisun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You may wish to place

radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either of the warmwater pipe or electric cable variety, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue it is perfectly possible to install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house. Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need to be able to provide a cool waft of air in your conservatory. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open at the necessary time, with a sensor to close them if it starts to rain. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air

the home

to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan. Shading Not just necessary for privacy, blinds also provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If the latter is a problem, your best bet is solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. The blinds you choose will have an enormous impact on the style of the room as a whole, so take your time choosing a look that’s right for you. Remember to ask how easy it is to clean your chosen blinds, and consider whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic

Seasonal Delights Cheese, Bacon & Onion Pie

Makes 8 Slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling

Perfect for a simple lunch or for an early summer picnic this savoury pie has a really rich and buttery crisp pastry and a tasty smoked bacon and onion filling. It tastes just as delicious warm or cold. Look for packs of smoked bacon pieces near the bacon rashers in the supermarket or use flavoursome Italian diced pancetta instead.

Pastry: 10

• • • • •

225g plain flour 1 tsp mustard powder Pinch of salt 115g butter, chilled and diced 4-5 tbsp iced water

Filling: • 175g smoked bacon pieces • 4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 200g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • Beaten egg, to glaze • Tomato salad, to serve (see Tip)

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with finely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour between your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then flatten into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper. Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the filling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fingertips. Trim off any excess pastry. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

Simple Joys I

kid’s corner I learnt to crochet patterns are often given in both written and chart

when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I was taught by an elderly neighbour one glorious, long-ago summer. We used to sit together on her swinging garden seat under a beautiful, scented white rose, intertwined with honeysuckle. She patiently taught me the intricacies of winding the wool around the hook and pulling it through to create the stitches. form. If you can’t understand one, you can usually work out the meaning from the other.

I have an older friend who has spent many hours knitting the most beautiful jumpers and cardigans. The downside is that all the long hours of concentration have resulted in severe arthritis in her neck. I asked her if she had ever tried crochet and she replied that she hadn’t because she had no desire to wear the end result. I introduced her to As the years have gone by, crochet has been crocheting flowers and she was hooked (!!!) something I’ve dipped in and out of. A shawl made Joy offers home tuition in crochet and other whilst I was a student nurse in quiet moments on needlecrafts and holds workshops at her home in night duty, pram blankets for the babies and dolls Pluckley. www.simplejoys.co.uk 07792 622339 blankets for my daughter. I even crocheted a tiny shawl with sewing cotton and a fishing bait hook to drape across the bed in the doll’s house, as though its wearer had just tossed it aside. Recently however, I have begun to experiment more. The beauty of crochet is that, basically, you work with only one stitch: if you drop it, it’s not the disaster that it is in knitting because it is instantly picked up again and, if you don’t like what you’ve done, it is so easy to just undo it and try it again another way. I have also learnt more about how to follow patterns – again, there is an advantage over knitting because crochet

recommend that anyone making an LPA has it registered, so that if it is ever needed it can be used without delay.

If you’ve ever worried about what would happen if you were unable, through mental or physical incapacity, to handle your own affairs a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) could be the answer and as the process of making and registering an LPA is now easier and quicker than ever it makes sense to do it now.

If an individual loses capacity without a registered LPA in place application must be made to the Court of Protection for a deputy Gill Snow – Solicitor at Pengelly & Rylands to be appointed to look after their property and financial affairs. This can be a lengthy and costly process.

The LPA replaced the old Enduring Power of Attorney in 2007 and allows you to appoint someone you trust to help you manage your finances or welfare. If you were ever to be unable to physically deal with the bank or building society your attorney would be able to do so on your behalf as well as claim benefits for you and even sell your property and if you were ever to lose mental capacity they could make decisions for you.

Our firm can guide you through the whole process of making and registering an LPA and do as much or as little as you wish. I would recommend making an LPA whilst you are fit and healthy as it will give you the peace of mind of knowing that someone you trust will be able to make decisions on your behalf if the need ever arose. If you would like to discuss this please contact me or Rosalind Johnson on 01580 762248.

There are two types of LPA available, one which deals with property and finance and one which deals with personal welfare. If you appoint an attorney under a welfare LPA they will be able to make decisions on your behalf about where you live, how you live and even medical treatment, if you were unable to make those decisions yourself. Making an LPA is fairly straightforward, and involves completing an 11 page form. You need to decide who you will appoint as attorney, whether you will have one or more attorneys and whether you wish to restrict the decisions which your attorney can make. Under the terms of The Mental Capacity Act 2005 your attorney must consult with you, whilst you have capacity and if ever you were to lose mental capacity must act in your best interests. You will also have to choose a certificate provider. This is an independent person you have known personally for at least two years or a professional, who must talk to you about the LPA and ensure you are aware of what you are doing. You must also choose someone to be notified when the LPA is to be registered. Lasting Powers of Attorney can only be used once they are registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. This takes approximately 9 weeks and costs at present, £130 to register each LPA. I would
