Hi everyone, Welcome to the March Issue, with March comes the anticipation of crisp and sunny spring days and the onset of British Summer Time. Sunday 25th March is the date to remember, when the clocks will “spring” forward an hour. That is if “the powers that be” haven’t decided to change it after all these years! So don’t be caught out.

during this time to be a popular feature. But after so many editions it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find good, clean and inoffensive content for this page. I do receive contributions from readers, but I often fear I’m beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel. So please send me your jokes, if they are clean and funny and there’s no risk offending anyone (there’s a challenge!) why keep them to yourself! If we only raise a slight titter or even a “Doh”, it’s a welcome break from the doom and gloom we are so often bombarded with. Apparently laughing is good for your health!

re you ready for a little spring pruning? More to the point, are your plants? It’s the time of the year when itchy fingers start reaching for the secateurs (if they haven’t already – your roses should have been done back in the winter, by the way). The problem with pruning is that there are a few rules to follow. The rules are straightforward, but working out which rule applies to which plant is where it can easily fall apart. There are hundreds of books available on

4

the subject of pruning, but that often makes it worse – real plants never look like the diagrams and all those little cut mark lines they draw on so helpfully, just seem to confuse things further. Some of us aren’t bothered by rules or books and just rush out there and have a good old hack, which always gives interesting results; others are more hesitant and timidly trim the edges off everything tidy, but strangely unattractive, unless you like amorphous blobby hummocks. It helps if you know what you want from the plant and what it’s likely to do after you’ve pruned it (apart from die, that is). Growth will usually start again from near the point where you’ve made your cut. If it’s a flowering

shrub, try not to cut off the developing flower buds. Shrubs that flower in the spring do so on old wood made the previous year (Forsythia, flowering currant) and are pruned after they’ve flowered. Deciduous shrubs that flower later on (Buddleia, Fuchsia) are pruned in early spring – their flowers grow on new wood made the same year as they flower. If it doesn’t flower, don’t worry (unless the reason it doesn’t flower is because it’s been pruned at the wrong time). Before getting stuck in make sure your secateurs/loppers have sharp, clean blades. Then:

the garden

Evergreens are more tender than deciduous shrubs and are usually pruned after the danger of frost has passed. If the poor thing is looking a total mess (before or indeed after the pruning session), what’s the worst that can happen? There is no RSPCP. A pruning disaster could just turn into a planting opportunity... Jo Arnell runs Gardening (and wreath making) workshops near Woodchurch 01233 861186 www.hornbrookmanor.co.uk

Cut out any dead or diseased wood first. Look at the plant’s overall shape and think about its natural habit – a graceful, arching specimen won’t look good reduced to a stubby lump. The harder you prune, the more vigorously the shrub will respond (in most cases, but of course there are exceptions that will drop dead at the sight of you approaching).

A Dog’s Thoughts

by Whisper Mirnaya - Creating Harmony Between Humans and Dogs in New Romney. www.mirnayacoxeth.vpweb.co.uk Time is flying by and we are now three months into a new year, my activities have been on a high, to get me in trim for the most important date in our calendar. My companion and I have been working on our exercises to lose weight for this special day, but most of all, my training is to make sure everything is in place. With only a few days to go we have to ease back so that we don’t overdo it, and get some rest in order to get the brain in balance. Training is a vital ingredient that helps develop the bond we have, exercise is also a key part of our day and making it interactive will bring us closer together, this makes that bond bigger and better. Communication is

the foundation of any good relationship and helps build a better partnership. So why is training so important? Firstly, it improves your well-being, having me well trained makes me easier to live with and then you’ll look on me in a far more positve light, rather than if I were an unruly, unpredictable pet who needs to be watched at all times, or kept away from polite company. The better trained I am the more freedom I shall get, including the freedom of being let off the lead so that I can run around while out on walks, keeping me happy and healthy. More than that it will help you to keep me safe by having me come back when called upon or leaving things alone when told not to touch, this could save my life. When I sit in front of you and look you in the eyes do you know what I’m thinking or asking? Well my senses are working overtime, I can tell that you are a little down, worrying about our special day, the nerves are trembling within you! Let me help you, give me a cuddle or on the other hand let’s take a walk on the sea front. Maybe we will meet all those new friends we have since the begining of our new year. The fresh air will do our minds a world of good, and helps our emotional state, giving us time away from the “four walls“, and helps get rid of those pent-up energies. Oh! I forgot to tell you my special day is a day at Cruft’s, who knows I may come back with a prize.

The British Countryside Our British countryside is teeming with life this time of year. To save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a back-garden safari.

British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA Publishing Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured. RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack.

Bugs Britannica Peter Marren and Richard Mabey Determined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepycrawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with buglife and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the flyspray this summer. British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook Camilla de la Bedovere. This is the ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the back-garden and beyond. Children will

love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife. A Kestrel for a Knave Barry Hines If you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Not released until June 2012 Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife If you are opting for a ‘staycations’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’. Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

Open Sesame Why have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell

1. Creating a focal point

12

While traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well.

2. Using colour Pale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective.

3. Planning your lighting Use lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts to suit your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or

A comfortable seating area can be based around a rug and finished with oversized lighting. The Barletta collection, Marks & Spencer, 0845 302 1234; marksandspencer.com.

a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, over-sized fixtures that suit the extra-large space.

4. Choosing a floor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spillproof and forgiving underfoot.

5. Separating spaces Not all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels (on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful.

6. Linking spaces Open-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles

the home tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example.

7. Solutions for storage Knocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find.

8. Buying and arranging furniture Conventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living areas, so you may have to look for larger-thanaverage pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners.

Sliding panels are designed to partition different areas. Leave the system closed to disguise clutter or pull it back to revert to openplan bliss. Prices start from £77.84, The Fabric Box, 0844 8118280; thefabricbox.co.uk. by Katherine Sorrell

Get Walking with Ashford Health Walks HealthWalks are free, volunteer led, walks aimed at those who are currently not active enough to benefit their health. Walks are generally between 40-90 minutes and leave from accessible venues such as libraries, villages halls and community centres. There is no need to book, walkers simply turn up at the meeting point and are guided around the route by the volunteer walk leader. Most HealthWalks finish with refreshments and a chat.

Your living landscape. Your living seas.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that opening an email from a family member, friend or colleague was perfectly safe. After all, you trust them all and they wouldn’t send you anything that would compromise your PC. Wrong!

Another common use of spoofing is for ‘phishing’ (so called because they attempt to ‘hook’ you in) emails. These are the emails that appear to be from your bank or other institution that typically warns you of irregular activity on your account and asks you to click on a link and enter your account details to reactivate your account. These types of emails are becoming more and more sophisticated and convincing. Just remember that no legitimate organisation would ever request this procedure, so NEVER follow any links of this sort, no matter how genuine they appear. If in doubt phone your bank. So remember to be careful with your emails. Nothing is necessarily as it appears, and don’t click on anything in an email unless you are 100% certain of its origin. Sometimes it seems even your friends are out to get you!

The fact is ‘spoofing’ an email address is one of the most common spamming and phishing Till next time… methods used today. Spoofing, put simply, is the process of entering a different email Steve, Compumate UK address for the sender of an email other than the real address. So, for example, I could send an email from my real email address (info@ compumate.co.uk) that, when it arrives in your mailbox, says it comes from joe.blogs@ microsoft.com It’s used for two main reasons; the first is to conceal the real sender and therefore mask their identity, and the second is trust. People are more likely to open an email and any attachments or links if it comes from someone they know. Sadly there is nothing that can be done to prevent your (or anyone’s) email address being used in this way. It’s bad enough receiving emails of this sort but it’s perhaps worse when it’s your email address that’s being used by the spammers! When family and friends start asking why you sent them such and such a file or link when in fact you did nothing of the sort. If you find this happening to you all you can do is notify everyone to be vigilant as your email address is being spoofed and to be careful if they receive any emails from ’you’. If they aren’t aware of this method of scamming it’s easy for them to fall foul of a ‘dodgy’ link in an apparently genuine email from a friend.

FREE LEGAL ADVICE FOR FAMILIES WITH UNDER 5 YEAR OLDS

to talk things through, so that we can advise you of the best way forward in your situation, so that you can make an informed choice as to how you wish to proceed.

In another of our regular series on legal matters, this month Laura Hails, Legal Executive at Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors, talks about a new free legal advice service in Tenterden.

It is a sad fact that we meet a number of families, often with young children, who are separating or in troubled relationships. There are a number of facilities available in the local area to provide families with additional support, and we are proud to work in partnership with Sure Start to assist families with under 5’s.

Following the success of our free family law clinic, we are pleased to announce that we will be running a free drop in service at the Sure Start Centre, based at the Little Explorers Children Centre, Recreation Ground Road, Tenterden. This is specifically for families with children aged under 5 years of age.

We understand that costs are a factor in family matters, and people are concerned about instructing solicitors. We are aware that there is a need in the local area, particularly with families with under 5’s, to meet with a lawyer to discuss their concerns and to receive some initial free advice.

We will be available at the centre every Wednesday from February, to discuss topics including divorce, cohabitation disputes, financial settlement after divorce and children issues. If any families have a legal issue or concern about their family, we will be available

At Pengelly & Rylands we encourage couples to communicate with each other and to try to keep matters as amicable as possible, by discussing what they want. We now have the

SPRING: The Time Of New Growth And A Seasonal Acupuncture Tune Up

24

Feeling tired and run down physically or emotionally after the winter cold and snow? Still recovering from those niggling ailments such as colds and flu? Acupuncture helps a wide range of physical and emotional conditions from muscle/ back pain to stress and anxiety. But you don’t need to be ill to have acupuncture. A quarterly seasonal tune up using acupuncture can help reduce sickness, boost energy levels and improve overall wellbeing. Why do I need a seasonal tune up now? When seasons change extra demands are placed on the energy of our bodies and we are more prone to illness or feeling down. The ancient system of acupuncture works in tune with nature and eases this time of transition. Spring is a time of new growth and rejuvenation but the change from cold, short days to lighter evenings and more warmth can leave people being vulnerable to illness or lacking emotional strength.

Prevention is better than waiting until we become ill or emotionally run down and yet many people take more care of their car than their mind and body! The car may have regular servicing and care, so what about our physical and emotional needs? Having a seasonal acupuncture tune up makes sense in helping to ward off potential illness, or making us stronger to fight any existing conditions. Acupuncture works not only by addressing the symptoms, but also by improving the energy imbalances that are regarded as the underlying causes. Acupuncturists look at the whole person and may give dietary and lifestyle advice, as well as teaching how to relax and boost health and energy using the ancient art of qi gong. Learn about some of these and other intriguing techniques such as cupping and moxibustion, in my next article. The national Acupuncture Awareness Week (27th February 4th March) highlighted the growing interest in acupuncture. So find out more and benefit from this safe and natural treatment. Stephen Bayliss

wit & wisdom

The Green Thing!

that operate on electricity. But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then.

Checking out at Tesco, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

When we were thirsty we drank from a tap instead of drinking from a plastic bottle of water shipped from the other side of the world. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then.

The woman apologised and explained, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.” The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” She was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were re cycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

28

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocers and didn’t climb into a 200-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby’s nappies because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 2000 watts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills

Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical socket in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest fish and chip shop. But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Warning:

Don’t make old people mad, we may not like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to wind us up!
