Unbelievably the Village Directory is seven years old this year, and“Wit & Wisdom�has proven during this time to be a popular feature. But after so many editions it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find good, clean and inoffensive content for this page. I do receive contributions from readers, but I often fear I’m beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel. So please send me your jokes, if they are clean and funny and there’s no risk offending anyone (there’s a challenge!) why keep them to yourself! If we only raise a slight titter or even a “Doh�, it’s a welcome break from the doom and gloom we are so often bombarded with. Apparently laughing is good for your health!

re you ready for a little spring pruning? More to the point, are your plants? It’s the time of the year when itchy fingers start reaching for the secateurs (if they haven’t already – your roses should have been done back in the winter, by the way). The problem with pruning is that there are a few rules to follow. The rules are straightforward, but working out which rule applies to which plant is where it can easily fall apart. There are hundreds of books available on the subject of pruning, but that often makes it worse – real plants never look like the diagrams and all those little cut mark lines they draw on so helpfully, just seem to confuse things further. Some of us aren’t
bothered by rules or books and just rush out there and have a good old hack, which always gives interesting results; others are more hesitant and timidly trim the edges off everything - tidy, but strangely unattractive, unless you like amorphous blobby hummocks. It helps if you know what you want from the plant and what it’s likely to do after you’ve pruned it (apart from die, that is). Growth will usually start again from near the point where you’ve made your cut. If it’s a flowering shrub, try not to cut off the developing flower buds. Shrubs that flower in the spring do so on old wood made the previous year (Forsythia, flowering currant) and are pruned after they’ve flowered. Deciduous shrubs that flower later on (Buddleia, Fuchsia) are pruned in early spring – their flowers grow on new wood made the same year as they flower. If it

the garden doesn’t flower, don’t worry (unless the reason it doesn’t flower is because it’s been pruned at the wrong time). Before getting stuck in make sure your secateurs/loppers have sharp, clean blades. Then: Cut out any dead or diseased wood first. Look at the plant’s overall shape and think about its natural habit – a graceful, arching specimen won’t look good reduced to a stubby lump.

Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are also very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Growing your own peppers is not much more involved than growing tomatoes, so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential. Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. The heavier, earlier crop will come if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory, but it is well worth growing them outside too.
The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear. Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them. Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (most readily available as a ‘tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form.

If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once there is no danger of late frosts you can put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.

If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions. If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light. Mowgli Hello Everyone, Mowglii here h here. I hope ho e you y u all enjoyed the snow and cold temperatures last month as much as we did. I spent a lot of time out in the cat run- birds and shrews show up so much better when everything is either snowy or frozen. However, my humans are as usual very silly as they clipped two patches out of my fur on my side just before the cold weather came, and these patches got very cold when I was outside. I don’t know why they had to pick right now to do it! Humans are almost as silly as goats!

I had my fur clipped because I had to have my heart scanned. Apparently sometimes I have a small heart murmur (I wouldn’t know. I think it is the humans fussing again) and Clive wanted to get a specialist to scan my heart to find out if they needed to do anything. Anyway, Clive took a day off and Ebony and I initially thought that he was just going to play with us all day but then Jane came home with Leah the nurse and a heart specialist came round to the house with his ultrasound. Initially I enjoyed jumping all over his ultrasound machine as it was on a trolley. This caused a mild panic as it is very expensive- good fun! But then, before I knew it, I was on my side with a patch clipped out of my beautiful Snow Spotted Serengeti fur, covered in cold ultrasound gel and having an ultrasound done. I kept telling them that there is nothing wrong with my heart but they didn’t listen. It was a great indignity to be ultrasounded on my own dining room table and I told them all about it. My regular miaow practice that I do in the hall really paid off and I had the specialist scared. I think he thought I was going to eat him (I wasn’t of course, I wouldn’t hurt anyone, I just wriggle and yell!). Ebony heard my yells and came rushing to help- she chirruped and tried to get between the specialist’s legs to trip him up. It all helped to make the ultrasound end rather sooner than it otherwise might have done. And my heart is perfectly good and normal
Anyway, even if my humans are a bit silly at least I have a home and am well looked after. The Clinic had a beautiful grey cat brought in last month. They tried very hard to find an owner but one couldn’t be found so after a stay at the Clinic he has gone to find a home with the Cats Protection League. I can’t imagine what it is like for cats with no homes in this weather. It’s been cold at night n here even when I have been under the duvet with my head on the pillow! m

The Handy Household - The Benefits of Bicarb Whether you know it as baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate or simply, bicarb, no home should be without this wonder product. While it’s regularly used in cooking as a raising agent, bicarbonate of soda has many more household uses offering an economical, non-toxic and effective remedy for a whole host of health, beauty and cleaning challenges. It’s deodorising powers are second to none – a slight dusting under the arms or in your shoes will keep you smelling fresh all day and if the cat litter tray starts to offend, just sprinkle some bicarb in the bottom to neutralise those nasty odours. in fact, bicarb can be used to deodorise everything from dishwashers to fridges, and a soak in a diluted solution, will freshen up any kitchenware from old thermos flasks to coffee makers. Always keep some in the bathroom because if you run out of toothpaste, bicarb mixed into a paste with water, will do the job just as well. This miracle paste also makes a fantastic skin exfoliator and can also be used to soothe itchy insect bites or, diluted with water, can be drunk as a cure for indigestion. What’s more, if you add it to your bath water it will even soften your skin. It’s ability to cut through grease and oil stains make it particularly handy for adding to your weekly wash, or cleaning burnt pans or even for unblocking drains rains – simply pour down some bicarb, followed by boiling water. Need any more convincing? Well, it’s also an effective fire extinguisher and can douse the flames of small kitchen fires. No home should be without it.

the home Today Rocket Boots Over the last few years writing in this lovely magazine I have revealed a number of confessions,so continuing the revelations and “Confessions of a Furniture Restorer” I have one more for you. I have never watched the film “Star Wars”! I admit I have caught snippets of it, which is enough to send me to sleep or run like a man possessed. It’s not just “Star Wars” of course, I really hate space travelling, galactic, ridiculous science fictional space craft, with rubbish stories and even more rubbish costumed beasts. There, I said it! It’s now out...I feel a bit better now. I think confession actually works, maybe, in that, ”load off your mind” kind of a way.

Anyway I started thinking about this dark secret of mine, firstly because, whilst scurrying around today in my workshop, it dawned on me how much distance I must actually travel daily. Some days are worse than others, but I do cover some ground believe it or not, so I thought wouldn’t it be cool to have one of those hover boards that Michael J Fox uses in “Back To The Future”, or maybe I just need some rocket boots. What’s annoying is, is (sorry I got excited and tapped to many is’s) is that there are all these boffin scientists around the world, all watching Star Trek and stuff with crazy space ships and gadgets, but when they go to work they invent things like a mouse with a spare ear on its back, or interactive television games.You can even get a dart board game where you throw imaginary darts at your telly. Why not just put up a dart board and throw some lumps of pointy brass at it? I saw the other day a childs’ drawing and painting kit that you plug into the telly, ridiculous! I mean, what is wrong with a piece of paper and some crayons I ask? So come on inventors and dreamers of a
futuristic world. Polish ya spanners and knock me up some rocket boots so I can shoom around my workshop quicker, and give my weary legs a wii rest!

Open Sesame Why have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell
1. Creating a focal point

While traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well.
2. Using colour Pale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective.
3. Planning your lighting Use lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts to suit your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or

a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, over-sized fixtures that suit the extra-large space.

Choosing a floor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spillproof and forgiving underfoot.
5. Separating spaces Not all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels (on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful.
6. Linking spaces Open-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles
the home tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example.
7. Solutions for storage Knocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find.
8. Buying and arranging furniture Conventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living areas, so you may have to look for larger-thanaverage pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners.

Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

Well its been an incredible start to the year for the members of Wendy Riley’s new Slimming World group in Wye. They have embraced the Extra Easy Food Optimising plan with gusto and since their first weigh in on the 10th of January they have lost a staggering 433lbs in just four weeks.
Wendy comments “I am absolutely thrilled with the progress of the group, they have shown such incredible prowess and understanding of food optimising and it is repaying them with amazing weight losses, all this, without depriving themselves, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the phrase “we can’t believe how much we are eating!”

You may think this sounds like a pretty good start for a new kid on the block but there’s more….plenty more in fact. Back in October the exciting opportunity arose for India to do the “Stills” photography on the London set of “The Forgotten”, a low budget British ghost movie, written and directed by Oliver Frampton, staring Clem Tibber, Elarica Gallacher and Shaun Dingwall, due for release later this year. Recently India’s work has focused on more local projects. She has been covering the progress of Breakin’ Hearts, the Ashford based, all girl national champion break-dance troupe, at regional and national competitions; producing images for the program for the Highworth Grammar School annual dance showcase and covering the Charing Heath Burns Night Event, organised by the Parish Council to raise money to match Ashford Borough Council’s contribution to purchase Park play equipment for the Charing Heath Playing Field. India will be donating 20% of her photo sales proceeds to the fund. With Summer Wedding bookings and a variety of enquiries in the pipeline, and plans to attend workshops with top international photographers including Rosie Hardy, it could be a busy year for India.

Failure did not stop these people from becoming great achievers. Maybe it helped to shape them, provide them with resilience and determination and enable them to strive for even greater things than they had at first imagined.
Failure – And Why It’s Good For You! To the consternation of children and parents at our first family assembly of term I announced that, in this week of exams and important sporting fixtures, I wanted to talk about… Failure. Failure is taboo. No-one wants failure, everyone regards failure as, well, failure. But I would argue its importance in the lives of children and adults. Failure is real and common to us all. We fail to gain the job that we craved; we see others being picked before us; our best efforts are sometimes not good enough. To experience failure is important, I argued, because 1.

You can empathise with others who have experienced it
3.
You can learn how to turn it into success
I was able to use an appropriate Youtube clip that provided the motivational message that “If you haven’t experienced failure, you haven’t lived!” Amongst others cited, Walt Disney was written off by his art teacher as unimaginative, Michael Jordan was dropped from his basketball team as a failure, The Beatles were turned down by a recording company for showing little creativity, JK Rowling was rejected by 9 publishers before Bloomsbury took her on, Thomas Edison was regarded as too stupid to be of value to anybody.
Both boys and girls play Tag- and contact rugby at Spring Grove and those who play can understand the idea that the ball must go backwards for play to go forwards. There is a life lesson here, I think: A step backwards might well be a step nearer our goal. A setback – and the lessons learnt – can be a stepping stone to success. Did Jesus experience failure? Was his arrest and death a great setback? Or was the Cross the greatest back pass in cosmic history – given what happened two days later? Failure is important if it provides lessons and instruction. If we lose, get dropped from a team, make a mistake in maths or find others picked before us, it does not have to end in failure. A player or team that identifies why it lost, the student that understands why the calculations went wrong or the candidate who is humble enough to admit that his best effort was insufficient might in time develop the skills and understanding to improve. In this age of parents demanding instant results and owning a reluctance to accept failure, pressure is applied to school teachers to give prizes to all. Our school motto is “Always do your best!” It is not “Always get it right!” Sometimes our best might result in failure… but I would suggest that the experience of failing can be a good thing and that a bigger prize awaits those who are patient, humble and persevering. Beware of Email Hijack! What could be more natural than the urge to help a friend in need? That’s what hackers are exploiting to get well meaning people to send money to them, by hijacking people’s email accounts. I recently had a phone call from one of my clients who was having trouble accessing their Google email account. They were checking it because they had received a number of phone calls from friends and family expressing concern. This was because they had received emails, which they hadn’t sent, saying that they had been attacked while on holiday and had lost their wallet and passport. The email asked for money to be wired to them in their hour of need. They weren’t even on holiday at the time!

My client was touched by all the offers of assistance they received but also concerned that someone might be fooled by the scam. Their email account had been hijacked. The most likely explanation for this was a weak password. (Password123 would you believe!)

Once the hacker had gained access to their email account, they changed the password so that my client couldn’t access their own email while they sent out their request for money to my client’s entire address book. It took 24 hours to get back into their email account as Google needed to do identity checks before giving them access again. In that time unfortunately two of my clients well meaning friends who hadn’t thought to phone to make sure the email was genuine had sent money. My client to their credit felt obliged to reimburse their friends. The moral of the story is if you use a web based account to access your email use a complex password and if you receive an email out of the blue from a trusted contact requesting money its probably worth checking before sending anything. The Green Thing!

Checking out at Tesco, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.
When we were thirsty we drank from a tap instead of drinking from a plastic bottle of water shipped from the other side of the world. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then.
The woman apologised and explained, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.” The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” She was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were re cycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocers and didn’t climb into a 200-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby’s nappies because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 2000 watts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills
Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical socket in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest fish and chip shop. But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?
Warning: Don’t make old people mad, we don’t like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to wind us up!
