Hi everyone, March not only represents the onset of spring but also brings Mother’s Day, this year on the 10th. For my mum it used to be a particularly special month, her birthday was the 7th March and then Mother’s Day would usually follow about a week later. So she had two full weeks of non-stop adoration and love poured upon her. Not that the adoration and love should ever stop, it’s just that with the busy lives we lead, it’s easy to take our loved ones slightly for granted, until a special day comes along to make us focus on what they mean to us. Although my mum is no longer around, in my heart March will always belong to her, but these days I can share a little of it with her, that is if my son cottons on to the hints that I leave for him, usually he has no idea what day of the week it is, let alone the month and date! So, don’t forget your mum this month, all it takes is a big hug and a kiss to let her know how you feel, although chocolates, flowers or both are much appreciated too. I know it’s too early to be certain but I really hope the worst of the winter weather is now behind us. I can’t wait to start spending time in the garden. If your garden is anything like mine it’s probably looking a bit worse for wear and needs a good dose of TLC. Don’t forget, if time is limited, or if it’s a task you’re really not inspired by, you’ll find plenty of help within these pages. Have a great month.

The Garden Shed March

So the grass is growing again.

By Jo Arnell

That’s a good thing because it means the weather’s warmed up and a bad thing because it will need cutting – more and more often as the season progresses. Mowing and edging the lawn, like having a haircut or vacuuming a room goes a long way towards making things look tidy and, if you don’t know where to start in the garden, cutting the grass is a good place. There is a whole spring regime recommended for keeping the lawn lovely, but I shan’t be troubling you with it. The garden centres seem to have a myriad of products on sale to improve the lawn – I never buy them because I imagine they’ll make the grass really healthy – and that will make it grow even faster. The only thing I occasionally do is aerate it, or at least the bits that get a lot

the garden of wear and tear, as compacted soil deprives the roots of oxygen and will eventually kill it. Grass does like a fair amount of sun. You can buy shady lawn seed, but remember that the type of grass used for shade tends to be finer and less hard wearing than a rugged rye grass, so it will never look quite as lush and thick. We are at the mercy of the weather this month and it’s tempting after a long winter to rush out on the first sunny day and overdo it, Here are a few things to be getting on with if it’s not too cold and wet this month: •

Watch out for slugs eating tender young shoots. There will be a plague of them due to last year’s wet weather.

There will also be more weeds, as we couldn’t get out to pull them up in all the wet weather.

Prune Dogwoods and willows (which have benefitted from the wet).

Plant early potatoes, onion sets and summer flowering bulbs.

Divide and replant overgrown clumps of perennials.

Sow annual seeds under cover and later in the month start sowing directly, but only if conditions allow – they will rot if in cold, damp soil.

Time For A Spring Clean By Claudia Leaf I had invited an old school friend around for coffee and was trying hard to make a good impression. Suddenly a shaft of spring sunlight flooded my lounge, making me cringe with embarrassment.

10

With a growing sense of shame I watched as this unforgiving shaft of light slid across the room, showing up the grubby finger marks on the door, the ring marks on my glass table and a thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. When it finally landed at my friend’s feet, close to a dirty paw mark our dog had left on the carpet, I saw a look of alarm on her face. “I’m so sorry, I’ve just noticed. Did I do that?” I had a nanosecond to decide whether I should openly confess my domestic shortcomings or keep quiet. “Oh, don’t worry”, I replied. “It’ll brush off when it’s dry.” She left soon afterwards, still apologising. I took a deep breath and realised it was time for some spring cleaning. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a “practical journal of industrial progress”) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and closets are

overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as “Downton Abbey” have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable whether 21st century householders will be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include blackleading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians still practice “khooneh tekouni” – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins. Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything

thoroughly either before or during the first week of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. They believed that people should sweep their floors and clean their houses to rid them of any negative influences that may have accumulated during the last twelve months. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hardwired into human DNA. Personally I believe that our seasonal enthusiasm to get busy with a mop and broom is always motivated by the same thing: it’s that accusing beam of sunlight that shows us up in front of guests.

NSPCC WILLING HANDS

12

The Ashford Branch of the NSPCC is looking for some Willing Hands to help with their fundraising – it could be as little as showing people where to park at one of our events, baking a cake, or holding a bucket outside Sainsbury’s. If you want to get more involved, you could join our committee and have a say in planning events. We are a small but very enthusiastic group from the villages around Ashford. Each year we raise about £18,000 through a variety of fundraising events. We believe child protection is everyone’s responsibility and want to see a society where children are loved and valued. Unfortunately you only have to read a newspaper today to see we have a lot of work to do. Fundraising is not all work, we have a lot of fun along the way. If you could spare a couple of hours occasionally, we would love to hear from you, please ring Monika 01797 342215 or Sue on 01233 840320 Events coming up that we could do with a Willing pair of Hands. Collecting at Eurotunnel on June 20th, July 6th and September 7th. Tesco Park Farm 11th April. Also a Pimms evening at a lovely Tenterden garden 13th June.

The true cost of a kitchen How do you ensure value for money when fitting a new kitchen? Painted Ivory is a new colourway for John Lewis’s popular Vermont kitchen, from its Core Collection.

Designing your kitchen

appliances? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service?

Using a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or per job, and what’s included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, worksurface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. If you’re using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Checking for quality

Comparing prices When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps and

Huge Warehouse Planned For Sevington Traffic queue on A2070 approaching Junction 10 Is this how you see Ashford’s Future? There are several new developments proposed for the area marked, that will feed into the Bad Munstereifel Road. Hundreds more vehicles will be travelling to Junction 10 every day. Will this impact on you?

18

Have you heard that the powerful multinational, AXA, want to build a huge new warehouse near Sevington Church and Kent Wool Growers are moving from the town centre to the same site? If Ashford Councillors agree to this plan, Sevington fields will be engulfed by warehouses. The plans show much of the fields covered by a single 80,000sqm warehouse - the same floor size as the O2 Arena in London, and thus one of the largest new buildings in Europe, taller than Sevington Church Spire. This will be seen from all the surrounding areas yet IF plans are passed we will end up with just a huge unimaginative shed!

The hugely increased traffic will be able to exit onto the bypass, to Junction 10, via new traffic lights. However, nothing will be done to help the Barrey Road users in the existing plans. There are plans to build part of a new Junction 10A but only the coast bound slip roads. What are the consequences of this for Ashford? Will these changes make a difference to you, if you are caught up in the traffic chaos? Remember this will be twenty four hour working, every day and night. How will it impact the emergency vehicles from the Hythe Road fire station and the hospital? Will all the residents of Ashford be expected to reimburse the developer for the millions spent creating a junction that just feeds more traffic onto the existing Junction 10? The development is being sold as supplying jobs for Ashford. But will it? We need quality, skilled jobs that fully value the working population and their potential for long term career development. What are the real quantity and quality of jobs that Ashford’s environment is being destroyed for? Isn’t it short-sighted and irresponsible to concrete over increasingly scarce agricultural land which we will need to feed our rapidly expanding population in the years ahead? This looks like Ashford’s equivalent of cutting down rainforests!

Why not regenerate the many empty and derelict existing industrial sites around the borough? Is this really the best site for this size of development? Can you imagine any other town wanting this huge shed as its most iconic building? Is this the legacy our Councillors want to leave future generations? Surely Ashford deserves a better deal than this? These are the questions you need to be aware of. If you have any comments now is the time to make them. Now, while Ashford Borough Councillors are still able to make changes to the plans. Now, not when you are sitting behind a huge queue of trucks! If this scheme is allowed to go forward unopposed we could all end up with a great deal more traffic being fed into an inadequate road system causing even more mayhem. Village Alliance is a group of ordinary people living in Ashford and the surrounding villages. We came together to try and help keep residents informed of exactly what the rapid changes being proposed to Ashford and the surrounding area will actually mean to them. The real impact of the development is not being widely advertised only people a few meters away have been informed but we feel this will impact the whole of Ashford and its surrounding villages forever.

Launch of Photography Project on Kent Downs Kent photographer Liz Garnett has started a project to create an intimate portrait of a Kent Downs valley over the course of a year. The valley is a short drive from Ashford between Bodsham and Elmsted. Over the last few years Liz has regularly driven through this valley and has enjoyed seeing the landscape change through the seasons. It is a sparsely populated valley and could be almost anywhere in the UK. “Whenever I stop the car it is beautifully peaceful and I am able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside” said Liz. The Kent Downs are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a vibrant landscape that includes this secluded valley which is crisscrossed by tiny lanes and historic hedgerows. The images Liz will be creating will be a mixture of digital and film based photography and possibly alternative process or mixed media. From the final images she will then select a body of work to go into an exhibition. Liz is seeking crowd funding to help her realise her dream of creating an exhibition on this valley.

The project started in January 2013 and will run to December 2013 and will be funded over three separate stages (February to April - June to August - October to December). Funding will go towards the costs of producing the images as well as final prints and exhibition costs. To support the project and give people the opportunity to be part of the art creating process Liz has decided to use crowd funding. Funding starts from as little as £3.50. The project can be followed as it unfolds on: http://kentdownsvalley.blogspot.co.uk/ or www.lizgarnett.com/valley.htm Liz’s career in photography started 20 years ago in April 1993 when she became a travel photographer. Her travel photography has been published worldwide in books, magazines and newspapers. On the art side the majority of her images are created using transparency or print film and she also enjoys exploring alternative processes and montage techniques. Her art photography has been exhibited in London and the South East as well mainland Europe. It is also in public and private collections around the world. <ends> Press contact: Liz Garnett - liz@lizgarnett.com - 07802 365 438 http://kentdownsvalley.blogspot.co.uk www.lizgarnett.com/valley.htm http://www.sponsume.com/project/valleyproject

Kids Corner

Making Use of Wye Whilst schools closed across the county, Spring Grove remained open during the recent snow. Just a little preparation beforehand – our resident gap students and I salted our hazardously sloping entrance drive and built a uniformed snowman to welcome the children arriving at school – ensured that we were ready for another busy week. With

Kids Corner Our musicians have brought tremendous pleasure to the old people at Brambles Old People’s Home and have been involved in important services at Wye Church. In November, the Year 6 pupils visited and studied the graves of Wye Churchyard, in particular those of soldiers and airmen killed in the two World Wars. Equipped with trowels, forks and brooms, we tidied

27

most children present we were able to enjoy a normal timetable but still found time to play in the snow, build sculptures and ambush the teachers. Our extensive games sessions were obviously disrupted but we adapted to the weather and enjoyed our now traditional snowy walk to Wye Crown and give the children a chance to enjoy some stunning views across the county on a chilly but beautiful day.

the churchyard ready for the Remembrance Service, in which three of our young trumpeters played The Last Post. We were recently surprised and of course delighted that the pupils had been given a special School Community Award by the High Sheriff of Kent, Mike Bax, who has led a campaign to serve our communities by keeping them free of litter.

Our pupils enjoy a busy and broad academic programme but also benefit from making full use of our rural community. Classes visit the church, the Chinese restaurant and even the pub! We go out to the lifeboat station at Dungeness, we visit castles and the Cathedral in Canterbury. We enjoy visits to local farms and learn about the crops, the animals and environmental issues.

Education that goes beyond the confines of the classroom undoubtedly broadens horizons and encourages children to appreciate their rich, local, rural heritage. Bill Jones, Headmaster Spring Grove School www.springgroveschool.co.uk 01233 812337 / 07732329163

Seasonal Delights Lemon Chicken with Tabbouleh Serves 4

Ready in 45 minutes

This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken portions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the flavours fully develop. 28

Ingredients: • 1 lemon, thinly sliced • 4 large chicken thigh portions (or 8 small thigh portions) • 4 tbsp olive oil • 3 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp clear honey, warmed • 225g bulgar wheat (see tip) • ½ cucumber, finely diced • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Tip: Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Push a lemon slice under the skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken. Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water. Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over.

Don’t Suffer In Silence

30

Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can’t hear, we can’t respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch – try talking to someone with headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for-granted and only notice it if it starts failing. Most age related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties. Age related hearing loss is much the same as other types of “wear and tear” on the body. Just as hips and knees wear out so does our hearing. Constant exposure to the noisy world we live in gradually wears away at the “nerves” in our ears, reducing their number and the range of sounds that can be picked up. What can you do to protect yourself? Even if you already have some loss, looking after what’s left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as: • Playing loud music through headphones and earphones • Attending loud live music concerts - even some classical concerts

• Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools • Day to day activities such as riding a motorcycle (wind noise – not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window) • Recreational activities such as shooting So first off, be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present and if there is, protect your ears. Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some high street chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and whilst they rarely offer them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. Keep a few pairs in a drawer for use around the house when tackling your latest DIY project too. What if you already have hearing loss? It’s not usually that you can’t hear at all but just that it’s not clear. Often it’s the high frequency sounds that fade first, such as bleeps and bells. Then it becomes difficult to hear what people are saying when there is background

noise such as in crowds or when the television is on. If left undiagnosed or treated, a hearing loss can lead to other problems. Because it’s unclear what has been said, socialising in groups becomes awkward. Sufferers find themselves pretending to laugh at jokes when they didn’t hear the punchline, or just nodding and smiling and then being embarrassed because the person talking is awaiting an answer. This in turn leads to loss of confidence and feelings of social exclusion. What can be done? It’s really not necessary to – literally – suffer in silence. A simple trip to your GP to arrange a hearing test or to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge. Discrete and almost invisible the latest aids can make such a difference and vastly improve your hearing. You’ll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left.

Hello, may I introduce myself – my name is Sara Quested and I am pleased to say I have recently opened the new hair salon called Hair ReQuest in Sellindge. I began my career in hairdressing 15 years ago when I started a 2 week work experience course from school at a local salon, I was then taken on as a Saturday girl where I later qualified, and I haven’t looked back since!

32

I’ve had a varied and interesting career working in several well known local salons for several years until I decided to take my services mobile, as this fitted in with my family life and my young son at the time. I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed this time over the last 6 years and have built up a very loyal clientele, with the majority of my clients following me throughout my career moves. Many have become firm friends and I’m now cutting their husband’s, children’s and friend’s hair!

All my new customers will receive a 10% discount, and I have introduced a loyalty card, which will give £25 off any product or service of their choice. Gift vouchers are also available to purchase. Please pop in for a coffee and a free consultation. Parking is available for 2 cars at the side of the salon, which is clearly marked, and also at the front of the shop entrance. I look foward to meeting you ~ Sara

When the opportunity came along to open my own salon I didn’t hesitate – it has always been an ambition to have my name over the door – which incidentally you will notice that it is the first part of my surname! I pride myself on offering a friendly, professional and modern approach to hair styling, but without charging “high street” prices. I’ve chosen to use Redken, having trained and used this high quality product extensively in the past. I’m really excited by my new challenge and hope to offer the local people of Sellindge and the surrounding area affordable, but professional hair styling, without the hassle of having to drive into town. Private Escort Care Service

Our Private Care Service carers can come to your house; help assist you with an outing in either your car or theirs. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
