Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, March not only represents the onset of spring but also brings Mother’s Day, this year on the 10th. For my mum it used to be a particularly special month, her birthday was the 7th March and then Mother’s Day would usually follow about a week later. So she had two full weeks of non-stop adoration and love poured upon her. Not that the adoration and love should ever stop, it’s just that with the busy lives we lead, it’s easy to take our loved ones slightly for granted, until a special day comes along to make us focus on what they mean to us. Although my mum is no longer around, in my heart March will always belong to her, but these days I can share a little of it with her, that is if my son cottons on to the hints that I leave for him, usually he has no idea what day of the week it is, let alone the month and date! So, don’t forget your mum this month, all it takes is a big hug and a kiss to let her know how you

feel, although chocolates, flowers or both are much appreciated too. I know it’s too early to be certain but I really hope the worst of the winter weather is now behind us. I can’t wait to start spending time in the garden. If your garden is anything like mine it’s probably looking a bit worse for wear and needs a good dose of TLC. Don’t forget, if time is limited, or if it’s a task you’re really not inspired by, you’ll find plenty of help within these pages. Have a great month.

like having a haircut or vacuuming a room goes a long way towards making things look tidy and, if you don’t know where to start in the garden, cutting the grass is a good place. There is a whole spring regime recommended for keeping the lawn lovely, but I shan’t be troubling you with it. The garden centres seem to have a myriad of products on sale to improve the lawn – I never buy them because I imagine they’ll make the grass really healthy – and that will make it grow even faster. The only thing I occasionally do is aerate it, or at least the bits that get a lot of wear and tear, as compacted soil deprives the roots of oxygen and will eventually kill it. Grass does like a fair amount of sun. You can buy shady lawn seed, but remember that the type of grass used for shade tends to be finer and less hard wearing than a rugged rye grass, so it will never look quite as lush and thick.

So the grass is growing again.

That’s a good thing because it means the weather’s warmed up and a bad thing because it will need cutting – more and more often as the season progresses. Mowing and edging the lawn,

We are at the mercy of the weather this month and it’s tempting after a long winter to rush out on the first sunny day and overdo it, Here are a few things to be getting on with if it’s not too cold and wet this month: •

Watch out for slugs eating tender young shoots. There will be a plague of them due to last year’s wet weather.

There will also be more weeds, as we couldn’t get out to pull them up in all the wet weather.

Prune Dogwoods and willows (which have benefitted from the wet).

Plant early potatoes, onion sets and summer flowering bulbs.

How to Play: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Mowgli Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. Hope you are all well and enjoying the slightly warmer weather! All is well here. Ebony and I are still enjoying exploring the new house (we got into the loft the other day. We thought it was GREAT and even Ebony was quite naughty about being extracted from the loft. Clive says he has aged 10 years from that experience. Humans are such fuss pots don’t you think?)

8

What unusual things and human food do all you cats out there like to eat? Ebony and I are very good and really don’t like human food with the very odd exception. Ebony (little Miss Perfect of course...) won’t eat any human food and I only like rocket. I often share Louis the tortoise’s rocket- yum! My love of rocket can lead to fun with guests. Clive and Jane often assure everyone that we are very good cats and won’t eat any of the lunch. This is my cue to leap onto the table, walk straight past all the meat and other things most cats apparently like, stick my head straight in the salad bowl and have a rummage for rocket. It goes down a storm every time and is quite the party trick! When I was a little kitten and came to live with Clive and Jane I came with a sheet of

The perfect alternative to kennels

recommended foods. Those of you who know Clive know that he is quite a stickler about what he thinks pets should eat and when he read the sheet and saw that it was recommended that I liked to share the odd kebab and chips he had to be sat down and brought a gin and tonic. I have to admit I have never seen kebab and chips again but I am not sorry. Jane says that Ebony and I must be the only cats in the world that don’t eat steak or any other kind of meat. It is true- whenever we are given any we pat it around and post it under the dresser. For some reason this is not popular and leads to Clive lying on the floor with a long wooden spoon trying to fish the meat out and Jane going on and on about rotting meat creating a smell. Humans are so very odd. I think our folks have it easy compared to Chris the vet. His two Bengal cats will eat absolutely anything. They say that sampling everything gives them a refined palate but I think they are a bit crazy. Recently they stole some meatballs and started carrying them around the house like toys and they have also been found with their heads in a saucepan of sprout soup lapping it up. Mad! Baby Joshua is continuing to do well and Ebony and I are liking having Jane home all the time. I have worked out that every few hours she sits on the sofa to feed Joshua and I like to join in and sit on her lap. Gets a bit crowded but it is very warm and snuggly! So every 3 hours in our house the baby starts crying because he is hungry and I start miaowing and jumping on the sofa just in case Jane doesn’t get the hint. Some people have been heard to mutter that it is like a madhouse. The clinic had an inspection recently from the Vet Medicines Directorate and passed with flying colours. Josh went in with Jane for the inspection

Seasonal Delights Lemon Chicken with Tabbouleh Serves 4

Ready in 45 minutes

This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken portions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the flavours fully develop. 12

Ingredients: • 1 lemon, thinly sliced • 4 large chicken thigh portions (or 8 small thigh portions) • 4 tbsp olive oil • 3 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp clear honey, warmed • 225g bulgar wheat (see tip) • ½ cucumber, finely diced • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Tip: Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. Push a lemon slice under the skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken. Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water. Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over.

The true cost of a kitchen How do you ensure value for money when fitting a new kitchen? Painted Ivory is a new colourway for John Lewis’s popular Vermont kitchen, from its Core Collection.

Designing your kitchen

appliances? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service?

Using a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or per job, and what’s included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, worksurface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. If you’re using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Checking for quality

Comparing prices When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps and

so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

elcome, to Babes In The Wood. My name is Julie and I would like to introduce to you my Nanny Agency and Childcare Consultancy in KENT. Babes In The Wood was born in 2001 in St. John’s Wood, LONDON, when I had my first child. I had worked previously as a children’s nanny for 10 years. So I believed that I was highly skilled in the knowhow and knowledge to offer a successful service to others. I not only know what a nanny has to do, to deliver a fantastic and professional service but I can also relate to the worries and traumas that one can feel when seeking their ideal long term child carer. Children are precious and deserve the time and care when finding the perfect match. So here I have developed a personal agency for all child care requirements. I meet all my families personally, so that I can make a perfect match first time round, causing less disruption to the whole family. On the home visit I offer the opportunity to discuss your requirements fully and any queries with regards to employing a nanny or other child carer but most importantly you get to meet me personally.

A Fantastic New Look for the Kings Head, The residents of the historic village of Wye are looking forward to one of its most prominent landmarks coming back to life after decades of decline. The once grand Kings Head public house has seen many landlords come and go, each attempting to bring back the glory days of the old coaching inn, usually without great success. The present building was built over 140 years ago, although a public house has stood on the site for centuries at the heart of the village. Now, a group of friends have vowed to bring The Kings Head back to life, and catapult it into the 21st century. The four friends - Scott, Sharon, Gordon, and Mark - all residents of neighbouring village Brook, have come together to pool their skills, resources, and finances to ensure the new business is not only a financial success, but will bring in much needed footfall and investment to help maintain Wye as one of Kent’s premier tourism and leisure destinations. One of the partners, Scott Richardson, said “This was once the heart of the village, but hasn’t been for some time now and we can’t wait to bring this back. It’s a beautiful old Victorian coaching house that just needs some love, and bringing back up to date”. Husband and wife Sharon and Gordon Thompson, well known localy as the landlords of Brook’s Honest Miller, are bringing almost 30 years’ experience in the pub and hospitality trade to The Kings Head. Speaking amidst the dust of the rennovations, Sharon said “we’re really looking forward to bringing local, seasonal food, using local suppliers to our menu” adding that “our menu will be a mix of seasonal classics, and great food

from the local area - very much produce from the land. Our head chef has worked in many top London restaurants, and also did a stint at The Five Bells in Brabourne. We’ll be very chalkboard ‘specials’ driven, so there’ll always be something new on the menu”. The ongoing rennovations will see the old bar and restaurant areas united for the first time, combining comfortable lounge seating and formal seating. Mark Lightford who has been on site daily helping to oversee the refurbishment said “we’re bringing the guest accommodation back into use, which has been under-utilised in recent times, and we don’t think anyone will miss the acres of woodchip wallpaper and avocado bathroom suites - although the old rooms were full to capacity recently when we sent the old Kings Head off with a bang at New year. We had Pop Idol Gareth Gates join us from his stint in pantomime at Canterbury’s Marlow Theatre. He DJ’d right through to midnight, and belted out a few tunes to welcome in 2013, it was a great way to signal the end of an era.” Why not visit us on 2nd March when we will be having a Wye Villagers Day, along with the Wye Farmers Market it will be a great opportunity to sample the very best of Wye. For more information go to www.kingsheadwye.com Cheers Scott

Making Use of Wye Whilst schools closed across the county, Spring Grove remained open during the recent snow. Our musicians have brought tremendous pleasure to the old people at Brambles Old People’s Home and have been involved in important services at Wye Church. In November, the Year 6 pupils visited and studied the graves of Wye Churchyard, in particular those of soldiers and airmen killed in the two World Wars. Equipped with trowels, forks and brooms, we tidied

most children present we were able to enjoy a normal timetable but still found time to play in the snow, build sculptures and ambush the teachers. Our extensive games sessions were obviously disrupted but we adapted to the weather and enjoyed our now traditional snowy walk to Wye Crown and give the children a chance to enjoy some stunning views across the county on a chilly but beautiful day.

the churchyard ready for the Remembrance Service, in which three of our young trumpeters played The Last Post. We were recently surprised and of course delighted that the pupils had been given a special School Community Award by the High Sheriff of Kent, Mike Bax, who has led a campaign to serve our communities by keeping them free of litter.

Our pupils enjoy a busy and broad academic programme but also benefit from making full use of our rural community. Classes visit the church, the Chinese restaurant and even the pub! We go out to the lifeboat station at Dungeness, we visit castles and the Cathedral in Canterbury. We enjoy visits to local farms and learn about the crops, the animals and environmental issues.

Education that goes beyond the confines of the classroom undoubtedly broadens horizons and encourages children to appreciate their rich, local, rural heritage. Bill Jones, Headmaster Spring Grove School www.springgroveschool.co.uk 01233 812337 / 07732329163

warehouse - the same floor size as the O2 Arena in London, and thus one of the largest new buildings in Europe, taller than Sevington Church Spire. This will be seen from all the surrounding areas yet IF plans are passed we will end up with just a huge unimaginative shed! The hugely increased traffic will be able to exit onto the bypass, to Junction 10, via new traffic lights. However, nothing will be done to help the Barrey Road users in the existing plans. There are plans to build part of a new Junction 10A but only the coast bound slip roads. What are the consequences of this for Ashford? Will these changes make a difference to you, if you are caught up in the traffic chaos? Remember this will be twenty four hour working, every day and night. How will it impact the emergency vehicles from the Hythe Road fire station and the hospital?

Will all the residents of Ashford be expected to reimburse the developer for There are several new developments proposed for the the millions spent creating a junction that area marked, that will feed into the Bad Munstereifel just feeds more traffic onto the existing Road. supplying jobs for Ashford. But will it? We need quality, skilled jobs that fully value the working population and their potential for long term career development. What are the real quantity If Ashford Councillors agree to this plan, Sevington and quality of jobs that Ashford’s fields will be engulfed by warehouses. The plans show environment is being destroyed for? much of the fields covered by a single 80,000sqm Isn’t it short-sighted and irresponsible to concrete over increasingly scarce agricultural land which we will need to feed our rapidly expanding population in the years ahead? This looks like Ashford’s equivalent of cutting down rainforests! Have you heard that the powerful multi-national, AXA, want to build a huge new warehouse near Sevington Church and Kent Wool Growers are moving from the town centre to the same site?

Why not regenerate the many empty and derelict existing industrial sites around the borough? Is this really the best site for this size of development? Can you imagine any other town

wanting this huge shed as its most iconic building? Is this the legacy our Councillors want to leave future generations? Surely Ashford deserves a better deal than this?

These are the questions you need to be aware of. If you have any comments now is the time to make them. Now, while Ashford Borough Councillors are still able to make changes to the plans. Now, not when you are sitting behind a huge queue of trucks! If this scheme is allowed to go forward unopposed we could all end up with a great deal more traffic being fed into an inadequate road system causing even more mayhem.

What does the colour of a woman‛s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It‛s men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. It‛s people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! Creature Comforts

War Horse Michael Morpurgo Based on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair. White Fang Jack London Set in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory before he’s adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands. Watership Down Richard Adams

‘Hang spring –cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond?

Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. He and his brother Hazel embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. Animal Farm George Orwell Originally subtitled ‘A Fairy Story’, this was Orwell’s allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution. Rebellion is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals. Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the revolt and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn. Remember: ‘All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than other. Charlotte’s Web E.B. White Bashful and whimsical Wilbur the Pig is horrified to learn that

he’s facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down. The Art of Racing in the Rain Garth Stein Another dog has his day now and this time it’s Enzo who wants to be reincarnated as a human. Enzo already feels human - he watches television and listens carefully to everything his master tells him. Through watching and listening, Enzo has gleaned that his human family is in trouble and he must do everything in his power to fix them. ‘Heartwarming’ doesn’t come close.
