Welcome Hi everyone, welcome back, I hope that you and your family are well. As you know, we are going through unprecedented times, a new awareness of social distance is required by us all and our local businesses are doing their very best to find a new way of working that enables you to feel safe enough to take up their services again. I’m too young to have experienced the war, but I believe we’ve experienced something very similar to that wartime spirit that my mum used to tell me about, ordinary people pulling together for the common good. As we lived through lockdown my heart was warmed by the sheer number of people doing remarkable good for others, from physical help with tasks like shopping to emotional help, keeping our spirits up. Who knew that the digital world would offer so much for the common good, connecting everyone from 9 to 90 and creating internet stars! I consider myself fairly proficient when it comes to technology, but lockdown introduced me to the likes of Zoom and TicTok and there’s an app that will teach me how to do the splits (I didn’t get very far with that

one – painful!). And then there’s our wonderful NHS and Carers, it goes without saying, I already know they were superstars. I am in awe of them all, they have something very special that I know I don’t have, I believe I’d crumble in their position – I’m a wimp! My hope is that this wonderful unity and drive for the common good will now reach out to our local trades that are struggling to get back on their feet. Not all of my advertisers are back up and running, it will take a little longer for some, but we do have some excellent trades that are ready and willing to be at your service, just pick up that phone and let’s begin on the path back to “normality”. My message is stark “Use Them or Lose Them!” Thank you, stay safe.

A pond is a great long-term addition to a garden but it’s worth doing a bit of planning before you grab a shovel and start digging! Where to put a pond? Avoid anywhere close to or beneath deciduous trees, as their leaves will clog up a pond and cause methane gas to be released as they rot, which can be lethal to fish and pond wildlife if the surface freezes over in the winter. You should, however, avoid an extremely sunny, hot spot as too much sun will increase the likelihood of problems with pond algae. Try to avoid sloping sites as the water will always need to sit on the level, which could mean a lot of hard work shifting garden soil to create it. How to choose a liner There are three main types of pond liner: a pre-formed rigid liner (generally mid-price – the disadvantage is that you can’t choose exactly the shape you want); plastic that you buy by the metre (generally the cheapest option, but it may only last three or four years); and butyl (the most costly option but it lasts around 30 years, and you can create exactly the size and shape you require). What shape? Rather than making an intricate design for your pond, with lots of changes in level and a complex outline, create a simple shape as this will use less butyl liner and less underlay (the most

6

expensive part of creating a pond) and will be easier to install properly. Even the better quality butyl liners and good quality rigid liners should have an ‘underlay’ between them and the soil, as this dramatically reduces the risk of the liner being damaged and the pond leaking. You can buy suitable material for flexible liners or use old carpet underlay, while plenty of sand works well for rigid types of liner. What size? A larger pond is generally easier to maintain as smaller volumes of water are more likely to develop problems such as turning bright green with algae in the summer. The pond should be at least 45cm (18in) deep to minimise algae and to maximise the range of plants you can grow. Adjust the pond levels at the edges before laying edging material – this is especially important if you’re using a rigid liner. Edges must fit snugly in the hole as gaps increase the chances of damage – pack dry sand or garden soil down into any gaps. Large, rounded stones at the edge of the pond help animals to climb out and help to hide the uppermost and outermost edges of the liner, plus reduce the amount of soil entering the pond by mistake. Whatever the shape of the pond, remember to have a gently sloping beach at one edge to

expected to do the right thing. If you think they might be too small to understand, why not wait a year or more before you create your pond?

Don’t just make the vertical sides of the pond totally flat and smooth – build in some ‘shelves’, each wide enough to hold pots or pond baskets so that you can plant aquatics and marginals (bog-loving plants) that need shallower water.

Always ensure that you create the pond so that it is easy to get out of should someone or something fall in – avoid steep, straight sides and have a graduated exit.

A pond should be filled with rain water, but if mains water is all that is available in sufficient quantity, then you will need to allow it to stand for a week or so before adding plants or fish. This allows additives from the mains water to be reduced. What to plant? Always buy pond and marginal plants from a good supplier, choose those that look really healthy, and make sure that the plants you go for are hardy and so able to withstand the low temperatures of winter without special protection. The label should also tell you the depth of water they require and just how big they’ll grow. Make it safe Make sure that you explain the potential dangers to children – if they don’t know they cannot be

Consider fitting a strong galvanised metal mesh over the entire surface. Specialist pond suppliers or builder’s merchants should have something suitable. It needs to be strong enough to bear a child’s weight, and have a small enough mesh size for there to be no chance of a small foot going through it. Plastic netting is not enough. A small fence around the pond complete with lockable gate need not look too unattractive if clothed with climbers or painted an attractive colour, and can easily be removed once children are older. White uPVC casement windows suit many styles of property. These are by Quickslide: 03332 41 22 40; quickslide.co.uk.

By Katherine Sorrell

There’s a world of window fashion available for homes these days, so if your double glazing requires replacing, why not consider a few different options? Your windows are the ‘eyes’ of your home, often the most noticeable element of its exterior. From the inside, they are your sources of natural light, they frame your view and (hopefully) they provide you with security and cosy, quiet, draught-free rooms. For most houses – historic buildings being the exception – double-glazed windows are the norm, though some homes these days have triple glazing, which generally provides even better energy efficiency. These windows are sealed units comprising two or three sheets of low-emissivity glass, which reflects heat back into the home but allows light through from outside. Between the layers of glass is either air or an inert gas such as argon, and it’s all framed with uPVC (plastic), wood, metal or a mixture of materials (composite). When choosing double glazing there is much more on offer than white, white or white. Even standard uPVC windows are now available in a range of colours and textures. “The demand for plain white has declined rapidly over the past five years, and the switch over to the contemporary greys and pastel colours has taken a strong

foothold,” says Graham Lindsay, managing director of Weru UK, which manufactures a range of high quality, high-tech, triple-glazed windows and doors. “Many systems now rank the most popular colour as Anthracite Grey, which has more interesting undertones than a typical pure grey, with flashes of blue and green, depending on the light. There has also been a recent transition to more bespoke unusual shades, edging towards beige greys. These shades are favourable because they can be combined with a wide range of building materials, such as brick, render or cladding.” While standard uPVC windows are still hugely popular, they are seeing stiff competition from metal-framed and composite windows, says Lindsay. Not only can the latter be powder coated in more than 5,000 different shades, but their inherent strength and stability makes them ideal for contemporary homes that require very large panes of glass. “While aluminium products are driving the growth, there are extremely innovative hybrid solutions available on the market, which deliver superb quality and unrivalled thermal and acoustic properties,” he points out. “At Weru, for example, we manufacture a hybrid alternative to aluminium called AFINO-tec, a combination of PVC and steel that is 25% lighter and allows for a 30%

The Home larger aperture than PVCu, making it an ideal option for bespoke, architecturally designed builds that demand larger, stronger glass areas.”

Other interesting window choices include timber on the inside with no-maintenance aluminium on the outside, the currently highly fashionable steel-framed (or Crittall-style) window, and even Undoubtedly it is best to suit double- or triple-glazed windows your choice of window to the that incorporate Venetian or style of your property, and, while pleated blinds between the panes metal and hybrid frames are of glass. Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins, plus chilling and cooling Ingredients for the pastry case and filling • 500g ready-made shortcrust pastry, thawed if frozen • Flour, for dusting • 1kg eating apples, peeled, cored and diced • 100g caster sugar • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 egg, beaten Ingredients for the crispy topping • 40g unsalted butter • 40g light soft brown sugar • 50g toasted flaked almonds TIP Replace the apples with diced pears if liked, or try a mix of both.

Make the most of the abundance of home-grown apples at this time of year with this delicious deep-dish apple pie. Serve with cream, custard or ice cream. Method 1. For the pastry case, roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a greased 23cm round spring-form cake tin (the pastry needs to come right up the sides of the tin). Chill in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, gas mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 2. For the filling, place the diced apples in a bowl and stir in the caster sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Spoon the mixture into the pastry case. Brush the rim of the pastry case with beaten egg. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a circle large enough to cover the filling, and drape over the filling. Pinch the edges together to seal then trim off any excess pastry. Brush the top with beaten egg. 3. Bake the pie on the preheated baking sheet for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is pale golden. 4. For the crispy topping, heat all the ingredients in a medium pan and let bubble for 2-3 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and gently spread the hot mixture over the top of the pie. Return the pie to the oven for a further 10-15 minutes until the topping is crunchy. Serve warm or cold.

The Importance of Posture By Catherine Rose

Posture is the way we carry and position our body throughout our daily physical activities. Poor posture can lead to a variety of muscular-skeletal issues including chronic pain and joint degeneration, so being aware of best posture is important. If you have had bad posture for a long time (and most of us do) it will feel very alien at first when you try to correct it, as the body wants to keep doing what it is used to. However, perseverance, with regular exercise to strengthen muscle tone, will result in your posture improving without you having to constantly think about it. For a good seated posture your knees should be slightly lower than your hips, so you need to position your chair height accordingly. If you work at a computer, ensure that the screen is at a comfortable eye level and you are not having to hunch forward or bend your neck. Sit with your feet flat on the floor facing forwards, a hip-width apart, and straighten your back so that your tailbone ‘sticks out’ rather than your back being rounded. Your spine should form a gentle ‘S’ curve. Finally, make a conscious effort to lower your shoulders, slightly pushing your shoulder blades back and down at the same time. You may need to do this more than once as we all tend to naturally carry our shoulders in a raised, rounded position, which over time can lead to muscle tightness, tension headaches and back or neck pain. Exercise and core stability are important when maintaining good posture. Muscles weaken and muscle fibres shorten without regular movement and exercise, leading to potential joint and ligament issues. Stretching exercises two or three times a week will help relieve tension, increase circulation and maintain muscle condition. Yoga and Pilates are two forms of exercise that are excellent for improving tone, flexibility and posture. There are classes available for all levels.

Ergonomic furniture and aids can help with best posture, for example a lumbar support cushion. Always ensure that your furniture supports you. A squashy chair that is too low and difficult to get out of may not be the best thing for your posture. Likewise, your mattress should properly support your back when you sleep. To check this, notice if your spine is straight when you lie on your side. If not, it may be time to change your mattress. Your pillow should also cradle your neck so that it is in alignment with the spine. Bad posture not only physically impacts on our body, it has also been proven to have a detrimental psychological effect. Charles Darwin first scientifically documented the link between movement and emotion in his studies of humans and animals. If you have concerns about your posture and suffer from chronic pain, visit your GP who can refer you to the appropriate health professional, such as an osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor.

Generations Connect - Active and Sharing A new business partnership has recently been formed on Romney Marsh between two local charities: Caring Altogether on Romney Marsh (CARM) has teamed up with the Romney Resource Centre to deliver an exciting new project that connects two generations and delivers joint services across Romney Marsh. The National Lottery Fund have provided a grant for the three-year project which is called Generations Connect - Active and Sharing. The inter-generational project aims to decrease social isolation and loneliness across Romney Marsh. With a better understanding of each other’s social needs and aspirations, it is hoped that an intergenerational community will develop that will work together for the benefit of all. CARM predominantly provides services to the over 65s and the Romney Resource Centre provides services to young people over 16 up to the age of 24 as well as Adults of all ages. This collaboration will allow young and older people to be connected and become an active part of their community, giving purpose and providing opportunities to come together. The two generations will learn with and from each other, share knowledge, skills and experiences, engage in activities and socialise together too.   Helen Mattock said ‘We want you to get involved in shaping the project and deciding on what activities should take place. If you are 16 or over you can get involved. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey, as this will really help us to

understand what is important to people. You can find the survey on either of our websites.’ www.carmromneymarsh.org.uk www.romney-resource.co.uk Kath Jones said ‘Thank you for taking the time to do this, it will help us all work together to support and deliver a great project for you and others in the community. If you do not fall into either our younger or older age groups, we would still love to hear from you as we will need more volunteers to support this project and the services which we currently provide and wish to develop.’ T: 01233 758122 Email contact: generationsconnect@carmromneymarsh.org.uk Helen Mattock (Manager CARM) and Kath Jones (Head of QA and Training Manager, Romney Resource Centre)
