It’s about getting good advice, considering everything that could affect your wishes and being aware of all your options so that you can make your own informed choice. Young or old, for most of us, making plans to ensure that our loved ones are taken care of once we have gone and making sure that they get the maximum benefit from the assets we have managed to acquire through hard work, is one of the most important things we will ever do. We are here to help you make sure that everything you have worked so hard for does go to the right people, your loved ones.

Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the November edition. When I was a child, I remember November being a very cold month but as I write November is just two weeks away, the sun is shining and it’s still possible to sit comfortably in the garden. As we keep being told, the planet certainly seems to be warming up but I’m concerned we’ll pay the price when the rain comes. As a child my dad would organise the annual firework display in the garden and my brothers would both stand out there, wrapped up in their hats and gloves, making pictures in the air with their sparklers. I, on the other hand, preferred the warmth of the house and would watch from the window. Whoever would have thought I’d grow into an adult that enjoys skiing and sitting on a mountain top in temperatures of minus 40o. I have my husband to thank for that. He taught me that it was all about the layers and dressing for the occasion. The promise of a hot mulled cider back at the bottom helps enormously too! We are now at the beginning of the run up to Christmas, and it’s time to book tables for your Christmas parties and brain storm the gifts you’ll give this year. I can’t quite believe we are here again, it seems the older I get the faster time passes, scary! Oh to be like Doctor Who and be able to regenerate, wouldn’t that be great! Maybe not, I’ll leave you to ponder that one! Until next time, have a great month.

Home & Interiors Making An Entrance

By Katherine Sorrell care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet simply require regular polishing or waxing. Linoleum or vinyl can look impressive but carpet is more problematic. Choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt, and make sure it’s suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use is often the best.

Millbrook wide cupboard, from £789; Richmond hall bench with baskets, from £499; both The Painted Furniture Company: 01285 656 041; paintedfurnitureco.co.uk.

Your hallway is the first part of your home you see when entering. A well thought-out design helps make an impression. Hallways are crucial to the look and feel of a house, acting as a ‘welcome home’, a connection between rooms and a vital storage area for everything from shoes and umbrellas to coats, gloves and scarves, plus all kinds of things that don’t have a specific place elsewhere. ON THE WALL In a narrow hallway, pale colours emphasise a sense of space. Specialist light-reflecting paints may help, or look for patterned wallpaper with a metallic sheen, and add large mirrors. Choose an extra-tough paint if you expect wear and tear, or add a dado rail and clad the walls below it with panelling, tiles or hard-wearing vinyl wallpaper. Period-style tiles or embossed wallpapers suit older properties with period features.

10

DURABLE FLOORS Flooring should be non-slip, durable, dirtresistant and easily maintained. Darker colours are generally better than pale, especially if you have pets and children. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to

LOVELY LIGHTING Light in the hallway should illuminate steps, stairs and thresholds clearly and help provide an even flow of light. With a high ceiling, a beautiful chandelier, or a series of pendants, looks great; otherwise, a row of downlights set into the ceiling is better. Avoid protruding wall lights in a narrow hall where they become obstacles. SENSIBLE STORAGE Built-in storage makes the most of available space. Shallow, floor-to-ceiling cupboards with doors painted the same colour as the walls, or mirrored, are discreet but hold masses. Alternatively, use free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, hooks or racks that suit your layout and style. Somewhere to keep post and keys is useful: perhaps a bowl and rack on a console table, radiator cover or shelf, or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and hooks. FINISHING TOUCHES Windows will benefit from shutters, blinds or curtains, with fabric co-ordinated with cushions or upholstery. A long, thin floor runner works beautifully on hard flooring. Fit shelving above doorways or above head height along the hall’s length for books and delicate items. And, finally, add a personal touch with paintings, photographs or other artworks.

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets

H

ello everyone, Mowgli here! Hope you are all enjoying the beginning of autumnwe are! Last month I wrote about the thrilling invasion of mice in our house. Little did Ebony and I know that was just the start….. Two more invasions- both exciting in their own way.

L

et’s start with the wasps. For a couple of months we have had a lot of dead and dying wasps in the kitchen. Not a clue where they were coming from. It has been Clive’s job to remove them every morning, but more have always quickly appeared. This last week they got a lot worse. Bits of dead wasp started appearing in the bath water (quite fun to pat around from the edge of the bath I tell you….), and the attic bedroom started getting up to 50 dead wasps a day on the carpet. Josh then got stung on the foot and finally the humans decided it was time for an investigation. It was decided the wasps were most likely to be in the bit of the loft off the attic bedroom. Clive and Josh went off like great explorers, Josh first. Ebony and I were shut out. So unfair! Josh opened the door to the loft and immediately yelled ‘found it!’ and indeed he had. A huge round wasps’ nest bigger than a football! Built just inside the door. If Josh had opened the door more than a crack he would have smashed it! Great excitement ensued!

T

he next problem was with a carpet. A beautiful carpet that is still classified as new (although it’s been here a few years). If Ebony or I ever do a stretch on the carpet and use our claws we get a severe look. Ebony just pointed out that it is me that does this and not her, but I am sure I have seen her do this at least once….. Anyway, Jane moved the sofas that are on the carpet. And underneath the sofas are 8 patches where something has eaten the carpet, surrounded by hundreds of

12

wing cases! Carpet moths! Shame there were no lives ones as they would have been fun to chase. I had a great time jumping around on all the furniture that had been moved while the humans looked at the carpet in horror. It looks like the moths are long gone but a can of Indorex flea spray has made sure they won’t come back!

The Garden

Gardening The Great Cover-Up

by Pippa Greenwood weather, so that the roots have a chance to establish. One of the best uses for this sort of planting is on a steep slope, where access for weeding, watering, feeding and pruning is difficult or even dangerous. The initial planting up may be a tough job, but once growing well a ground cover-clad slope will be far simpler to look after than a steep grassy slope.

There is a lot to be said for some variation in the height of the plants in your garden. Any garden, whatever its size or location, will look more interesting with ‘ups and down’ in the planting, so by all means include some tall plants as well as those which are just a bit closer to the soil. Don’t forget how attractive and useful ground-cover planting can be, covering the soil with goodlooking foliage which, in some cases, is decorated with a fair smattering of flowers or berries. Some ground-cover plants are available as ‘bare root’ plants, lifted from a field and ready for putting in to the ground whilst they are dormant, so now is a great time to get ordering and buying ready to plant during suitable weather over the next few months. Look at what is available in local nurseries and garden centres but also visit a

14

few websites. Ground-cover plants are also often available in potted form, especially if it is some of the smaller, less woody plants which appeal to you. These can be planted now too, but as their roots come well-encased in compost, they can be planted at any time of the year. For best results avoid extremely cold and wet weather, and the very hottest and driest period in summer. Ground-cover planting is an excellent way to reduce the amount of work you need to do – perfect if your garden is too big for the time or energy you have to spare. Rather than having a flower bed full of herbaceous plants or summer bedding, a ground-cover bed, once planted, needs little maintenance and pretty well looks after itself. It will need watering during the first year or two, especially in dry

Gardens on slopes or indeed windswept spots can suffer quite serious and irritating soil-slippage or erosion if left unplanted. But once planted up, the roots of your ground-cover planting will help to secure the soil and the stems and foliage will help to protect the soil surface. Weeds just love open spaces, but cover spare bits of ground with ground-cover planting and the weeds will often be swamped out: literally starved of light and suffering such competition from your chosen planting that they cannot thrive. For best effect choose plants which are evergreen and so hold their leaves throughout the year. Evergreens just shed their leaves little and often, rather than their deciduous relatives which drop them all in one go in the autumn, which means you won’t suffer from the bare, twiggy effect that deciduous plants would give. If you choose a ground-cover plant such as Cotoneaster horizontalis you will be able to

The Garden enjoy really attractive berries as well as the neat foliage. Ground-cover planting like this will often offer a useful source of shelter to local wildlife and food for berry eaters too. Sometimes it can be difficult to spot suitable ground-cover plants unless the nursery or garden centre has a designated area for them, so, when searching out plants for ground cover, always read the information given about each plant thoroughly. Ideally you want those where the stated height is smaller than the stated spread – it is outwards not upwards you are after! Look for clues in the plants’ Latin names too – those with words suggesting spread out or horizontal are good indicators e.g. prostrata (prostrate), horizontalis (horizontal), repens (creeping). Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items and perfect Christmas gifts for gardeners: a ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (great vegetable plants and weekly advice from Pippa), stylish cloches, the fantastic SpeedHoe, raised bed kits, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?

Sweet Recipe Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling and chilling time

Salted Caramel, Chocolate and Chilli Tartlets

It may sound like an unusual combination but a hint of fiery chilli complements a rich chocolate dessert perfectly. Serve with a spoonful of thick cream or Greek yogurt for a really indulgent dessert.

Ingredients: • Flour, for dusting • 250g ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry • 260g jar salted caramel sauce • 25g unsalted butter • 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 1 small red chilli, deseeded and chopped (see Tip) • Shredded fresh basil leaves, to decorate (optional) • Icing sugar, for dusting

TIP

Blanch the chopped chilli pepper in boiling water for 1 minute, then refresh under cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. This will remove a little of the fiery heat from the chilli. If you prefer, replace the fresh chopped chilli with a sprinkle of dried chilli flakes. 24

1. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line six 10cm tartlet tins. Prick the bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6.

2. Line each tartlet tin with a circle of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes. Remove the beans and paper and bake the tarts for a further 4-5 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Leave to cool completely, then remove the pastry cases from the tins and place on a board.

3. Divide the salted caramel sauce between the cold

tartlet pastry cases, smoothing the surfaces level with the back of a teaspoon. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

4. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl

set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir the mixture until smooth. Cool for 20 minutes then spread over the salted caramel filling. Chill for 1 hour or until set.

5. To serve, sprinkle the chopped chilli pepper over the

set chocolate topping and scatter over the shredded basil (if using). Dust with icing sugar.

Cheats’ Chicken Tikka Biryani Serves 4

Ready in 35 minutes

If you fancy a midweek curry but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, then whip up this quick and easy version of a classic Indian rice and chicken dish in next-to-no time. Using tikka curry paste and pouches of microwave spiced pilau rice, it’s the perfect cheat! • 400g chicken breast

fillets, cut into chunks • 2 tbsp natural yogurt • 1 tbsp tikka curry paste • Squeeze of lemon juice • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 red onion, peeled and

roughly chopped • 450g frozen mixed

vegetables with cauliflower • 3 x 250g sachets instant

pilau rice • Sprigs of fresh mint, to

garnish • Mango chutney and

poppadoms, to serve 26

Toss the chicken chunks in the yogurt, curry paste and lemon juice, then spread them on a baking sheet lined with foil. Cook under a medium-hot grill for 12-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly charred in places. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Add the onion and fry for 2 minutes. Pick the cauliflower out of the frozen vegetables. Add to the pan and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until browned in places. Stir in the remaining vegetables, the rice and 90ml water or vegetable stock. Cover and cook over a low heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring once or twice until piping hot all the way through. Toss the hot cooked chicken tikka chunks into the rice. Garnish with sprigs of mint and serve with chutney and poppadoms. To make a cooling cucumber and mint yogurt to accompany the biryani, mix ¼ of a grated TIP onion and ¼ of a grated cucumber with 300ml natural yogurt, 2 tbsp freshly chopped mint and ½ tsp ground cumin.

PARENTING Making Christmas Extra Special ELF ON A SHELF The original idea behind Elf on a Shelf was that an elf would arrive at the start of Christmas to watch over children and report back to Father Christmas. However, the trend has changed in recent years to become a bit more fun (and a bit less creepy). Now the craze is for the elf to get up to mischief overnight, whether it’s making snow angels in flour, tying the children’s shoelaces together or wrapping the loo in Christmas paper. (Search Pinterest for inspiration.) KINDNESS ELVES Not keen on the idea of a pint-sized prankster? Kindness elves have become a popular alternative. They still move each night but rather than tricks, they leave notes praising the child for a good deed or suggesting a kind act the child could do, such as visiting an elderly neighbour or making a card for a relative. ADVENT CALENDARS

Elves, £1 each from Tiger Stores Looking for an alternative to a chocolate advent calendar? If you have the time, you could make or buy a reusable calendar to fill

by Kate Duggan

this calendar just as much as the kids.) See www.jacquielawson. com. If your child loves crafts, the Mini Makes Christmas papercraft book by Half Pint Home will provide hours of entertainment. There’s an activity for each day leading up to Christmas, including mini-bunting, finger puppets, decorations and more. Mini Makes Christmas costs £12.99 from www.etsy.co.uk. Early Learning Centre Advent Calendar, £25

with trinkets and second-hand small toys. A bundle of Shopkins characters, for example, can be picked up relatively cheaply on eBay. The calendar can then be brought out again each year, so becoming part of your family’s festive traditions. If you don’t have the time (or energy) to find 24 gifts, the advent calendars from Lego, Smiggle, Playmobil and the Early Learning Centre offer a decent selection of goodies for £20-£30. You can also sometimes find a previous year’s calendar for £10 or less on eBay. Digital calendars have different activities, images, videos or other features to unlock each day. The best one I’ve found is by Jacquie Lawson. It costs just £3 and will work on most computers, smartphones and tablets. Activities include making a snowflake, decorating a Christmas tree and solving puzzles. Each activity can be played as many times as you like. (Grown-ups tend to enjoy

VIDEO MESSAGES FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS Surprise your child with a personalised video message from Father Christmas, thanks to Portable North Pole (PNP). You can get a short video for free or unlock lots of different personalised videos, phone calls and stories for around £11. The videos are very well made and will keep your child believing for that little bit longer, see www. portablenorthpole.com. SANTA SPY CAM With the Santa Spy Cam app, you can capture video evidence of elves and Father Christmas visiting your home. My daughter caught an elf on camera last year using the app and the experience made her a believer again. The app is available for Apple and Android phones. One video is free, the rest cost a few pounds, see www.santaspycam.com.

Great Health, Wellbeing and Fitness Gifts Williams and Danny Penman, an NHS ‘Book on Prescription’, teaches Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Just a few minutes’ practice a day can bring great benefits, not just for those struggling with mental health issues but for anyone wanting to improve their wellbeing in today’s hectic world. Available as a book, eBook, audio CD and CD-ROM from various retailers including Amazon and WHSmith. Stuck for gift ideas for your nearest and dearest? Here are some presents that could bring them a happier, healthier new year. Available from www. weightwatchersshop.co.uk. • LighterLife don’t offer gift vouchers either, but you can buy food packs for friends interested in trying the plan from around £15. Available from www.lighterlife. com/shop/foodpacks/bundles. html. MINDFULNESS GIFTS NHS doctors are now recommending mindfulness to improve mental health and manage long-term pain. • The Introduction to Mindfulness Gift Box uses simple task cards and a weeklong challenge to help users learn simple mindfulness techniques and integrate them easily and effectively into their day. Health & Lifestyle

FITNESS GIFTS • Gaiam Beginners’ Pilates Kit This includes a body-sculpting ball, resistance band and instructional workout DVD, great for first-timers or improvers. Available from John Lewis, Amazon and other retailers at around £26.49. • Weight Training Equipment Experts recommend weight training because muscle burns more calories, even at rest, than fat – and we’re prone to losing muscle tone as we age. For beginners, light dumbbells and/ or wrist and ankle weights are ideal. Kettlebells are popular, and for more serious weightlifters, barbell sets will allow them to add or remove weights to suit them. All available from major retailers such as Argos, Amazon and John Lewis, and fitness stores or websites. Pairs of low weight vinyl dumbbells, 2 kg kettlebells and pairs of wrist and ankle weights all start from around £5. Expect to pay at least £28 for a barbell set but check reviews – some poorer quality sets have inferior fixtures that allow weights to slip off.
