Established in 2007, Cuts for Mutts provides professional grooming for all breeds, carried out in a fully equipped salon, on the outskirts of Lenham village. My love of dogs and grooming stemmed from showing Welsh Springer Spaniels and helping out at a parlour – I learnt a great deal from a professional groomer, including how to present my dogs, and watched how she prepared other breeds. Whilst competing at dog shows in the UK and Europe, I took more interest in how other breeds were presented for judging and aquired a good foundation of knowledge for correct breed styles. At this stage I was preparing and handling dogs at Championship show level including Crufts and grooming an assortment of friend’s pet dogs. A natural progression was then to attend Hadlow College, animal management specialists. I achieved the OCN Intermediate Dog Grooming qualification. I have been running Cuts For Mutts ever since, and I’m highly passionate about providing a quality, friendly, one to one service.

Welcome Hi everyone, I can’t believe it’s November again, the year has just flown by. This time last year the roof was about to be removed from my kitchen in order to fix a number of damaging leaks. It’s not the best time of year to expose a kitchen to the elements but it couldn’t be helped. I think I speak for everyone involved when I say there was a considerable amount of trepidation, it wasn’t a straight forward job, in fact I’ll be telling you all about it in a future edition. As it turned out it was an unusually mild November, I’m pleased to say, but we were also in the extremely capable hands of Hamlet Buildings, who did a fantastic job for us. Now, one year on, I have a wonderfully warm, dry and bright kitchen that is a joy to spend time in. In fact I spend a great deal of time in it, especially at deadline time when I’m working all the hours available, and raiding the cupboards for comfort food, just to help me through (I’ve just polished off a syrup pudding with custard!). The big event for this month has to be Bonfire Night, this year the Farriers Arms in Mersham are holding their annual firework display on Saturday the 7th. It’s a big event and professionally organised, you should receive your magazine just in time for this event, Whatever you do enjoy yourselves and stay safe. Until next time, have a great month!

the garden
Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too.
4
If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for
plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’
and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

Fund, which have both awarded it grants. Locally, the scheme has attracted support from Garden Designers, Ylva Bild McKenzie at Madrona Nurseries, Franziska Harman Garden Design and others, while sponsor David Wilson Homes contributed funds and supplies. The Gardening Group began working to transform the space late last year. The last 10 months has seen lots of positive activity - extensive clearing, creation of upcycled compost bins made from pallets, erection of a new summerhouse and planting. Some of the heavier work was commissioned to Kingfisher Landscapes (created paths and raised beds) while the designs and layouts were provided by local sponsors Franziska Harman & Ylva Blid Mackenzie.
A Dose of Green Care in the Garden at Charing Surgery 6
Charing Surgery are delighted to announce the
formal launch of the Gardening Group with the unveiling of its new therapeutic gardens which took place on Tuesday 6th October. Introduced by Charing Surgery and the Charing PPG (Patient Participation Group), the Gardening Group offers the opportunity for registered patients to improve their lives through transforming and maintaining two plots of land in the Practice grounds. Gardening is therapeutic by nature and it was this concept, which first planted the seed of an idea for something that would empower patients. With health & wellbeing at its heart, the Gardening Group facilitates a healthy group activity, with far-reaching benefits for patients. Senior Partner at Charing Surgery, Dr Bill Warrilow, explains "The Walking Group at the Surgery, which was established in 2009, has proven significant benefits. A group activity like the Gardening Group, that is positive, social, noncompetitive and inclusive will achieve similar benefits in reducing social isolation, improving mood and restoring confidence. A well-designed, communal, therapeutic garden will extend healthful activity to a greater number of patients". This inspiring venture has been recognised by Ashford Borough Council and the Big Lottery
Managed by co-ordinator Jo'anne Munro, the group meets every Tuesday 10am - 12pm and is made up of patients who would like to be involved or have been referred, should their GP feel they will benefit, from a social or fitness aspect. More sessions will be added as support grows. Jo'anne has produced planting schemes to provide yearround interest in the garden to keep the group busy and sets activities for each session. "The feedback from existing members has been fantastic, everybody loves meeting up and working together, it's really making a difference to their ability to manage their own wellbeing and make new friends at the same time. There's also a positive charge in the air around the Surgery as visitors see the gardens transform around them." ~Jo'anne Munro, Gardening Group Coordinator It's well documented that gardening is good for you. In fact a recent article from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) quotes Dr William Bird MBE and the work of Intelligent Health to report that 80% of long term conditions could be prevented by access to a healthier lifestyle and that gardening can play a key part in developing those lifestyles. The Gardening Group is completely aligned with the ethos – gardening allows patients to come together, make new friends, get fresh air and exercise, be creative, have fun, do something purposeful and feel a sense of belonging, to an incredibly worthwhile project. Members will literally get to see the fruits (flowers and vegetables) of their labours and feel a sense of pride and community. Anyone interested in joining the Gardening Group should contact Jo'anne Munro on 01233 713582.

convenience of online ordering and a friendly and efficient delivery service. All of our firewood is a mixture of quality hardwood, namely Oak, Ash, Hornbeam, Beech, Birch and Sycamore, which is native to Kentish woodlands. We work hard to minimise our environmental impact and always buy from a sustainable source. Our cord timber is legally sourced from local coppiced woodlands that have been granted felling licenses from the Forestry Commission. Coppicing is an ancient land management practice that encourages healthy tree growth and regeneration of flora and fauna. Our most popular logs are kiln dried logs which are naturally seasoned then further dried in our biomass wood fired kiln. They are suitable for use in open fires, stoves and wood burners. The low moisture content of kiln dried firewood ensures that it is easier to light, produces more heat, burns cleaner and more efficiently, meaning you use less logs to produce the same heat output as traditionally seasoned firewood. Our kindling is also produced in the same way.

Seasoned logs are dried naturally in the traditional way at our farm, with the timber stacked in the open for a year or two to allow it to dry in the sun and wind. Seasoned firewood will not give quite the same heat output as kiln dried logs, but it does make a good lower cost option for all open fires, stoves and log burners.

Home & Interiors Buying a Bespoke Kitchen
12
If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen.
of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.
Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress. Rather than squeezing into a ready-made garment that’s just like thousands of others, you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst a little more costly (okay, sometimes a lot more costly), it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required
Why buy bespoke? Buy an off-the-peg kitchen and your choices are limited. Yes, there’ll be a selection of door styles, carcass sizes and, hopefully, several different worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, large or small. You want extra-high base units? You’ve got them, to the millimetre. Extra-deep worktops? No problem. A

combination of different, perhaps unusual, materials? Just say the word. With bespoke you can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint (if you’re having a painted kitchen, you could match the shade to, say, your favourite mug). You can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like, or even go so far as to have special matching sockets fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you will end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’ All in the detail With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit – square, rectangular, curved, stepped or any design you like. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality. Working with a designer Before contacting a bespoke
kitchen company, it’s wise to start considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could simply be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be handbuilt and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and
the home
templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to finetune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

“Wouldn’t be without it” Faye and David Prigmore live in Pluckley near Ashford in Kent They both work as couriers which gives them the flexibility to spend time with their three daughters. “Two of them have horses and compete in eventing, so I help out as their groom,” says Faye. “Everything from making the tea to washing the horses down, walking the courses, moving fence jumps and helping with the physio.” It may not be glamourous, but Faye enjoys it! And their other daughter is also very active as a keen netball player. “We used to have lots of animals as well – dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens – but not at the moment,” says Faye. “Although a dog would be nice again when the time is right.” Boiler breakdown The couple decided to get a water softener after years of putting up with very hard water and excess limescale. Faye explains: “The water here is very hard and very limey. We used to buy small tablets to put in our water to help but it was getting very expensive. We decided getting a water softener would be better and should end up paying for itself.” After a huge build-up of limescale – half a tank full – led to the demise of their boiler, and problems in their washing machine and dishwasher, the couple made the decision to get a Harvey Water Softener. And immediately saw the benefits.
we still get a very good lather,” says Faye. “And you can see the difference too. We have shiny taps now and the glass on the shower door is much clearer. Before you would run your hand down the shower door and feel the limescale - it was so bad.” The couple has noticed the water tastes slightly different, which is fine, and cleaning takes a lot less time as there is a lot less limescale! David adds: “The water also feels different. When I wash my face with soap and rinse it with fresh water afterwards my face still feels soft.” User-friendly and cost-effective They also find the Harvey Water Softener unit user-friendly and cost-effective. Salt is necessary to keep a water softener running and the water soft. Harvey Water Softeners use salt blocks which are designed to be compact and easy to store and replace. “Six blocks cost around £16,” says David, “and we find two big blocks last us a month to six weeks.” Recommended Both Faye and David have recommended getting a water softener to family and friends. They have had their Harvey Water Softener for a year now and haven’t looked back. “We wouldn’t be without it now,” says Faye. “We have definitely seen the benefits and feel it has paid for itself.”
The Harvey water softener fits neatly under a kitchen sink

Cake and Bake Snickerdoodles

These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!
Ingredients:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.
• 115g unsalted butter, softened
2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough.
• 100g dark muscovado sugar • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 175g self-raising flour • 1 tbsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Makes 16 Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling
3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnutsized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.
TIP
Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.

TENTERDEN CHRISTMAS MARKET PREVIEW THE BIGGEST AND BEST EVER!
One of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Kentish festive season - the Tenterden Christmas Market - is set to be biggest, best and most twinkly ever! In a preview announcement, organisers Tenterden Chamber of Commerce have outlined some of the attractions already confirmed for this year’s Christmas Market, which will be held on Saturday, 5th December. Visitors will be able to enjoy... • The most dazzling display of Christmas lights the town has ever staged - frosty white lights atop the mature trees flanking the High Street, and more than 100 mini Christmas trees decking the town’s celebrated shops and restaurants. • Christmas gifts, many unique and handcrafted, from more than 50 stalls. • Street food from around the world, plus the finest Kentish-produced beers, wines and spirits, and.... • Entertainment for the whole family, including fairground rides, music, dance, and - of course Santa in his grotto. Says Tenterden Chamber of Commerce events officer Jonathan Medes: “Tenterden Christmas Market, with its wonderful atmosphere, has become a festive season ‘must’ for people across the county. For the first time, we’ve had to switch the event to a Saturday and extend the hours from 10am until late, and anticipation is building strongly”. Beauty Time for Some TLC by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk The kids are running you ragged, your boss seems to think you’re on 24 hour call and your other half has commandeered the TV. It’s time to pour yourself a glass of wine, turn the music up and lock yourself away for a much needed pampering session.

First off, a decent face mask is a must. Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask, £23, is a good choice. Rose clay penetrates your pores for a really deep clean, while Canadian willowherb helps to give you your ‘glow’ back. When you wash the mask off, jojoba beads gently exfoliate your skin. Other ingredients include Persian silk tree (an anti-irritant), along with several essential oils. It’s real treat for your senses as as your skin, as it smells divine.
Special event coming up? If your skin is really in need of an instant pick-me up, try Roloxin Lift Instant Smoothing Masque instead. Combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica particles, the mask smoothes skin and gives a brighter appearance in minutes, with results lasting up to 24 hours. In a clinical trial, 95% of users reported a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. I certainly noticed a difference after using it – my skin felt softer, tighter and less puffy. A box of 10 applications costs £79, so it isn’t cheap, but it’s worth having on hand for special occasions. I do love a good multi-tasker, and cocoa butter certainly meets that job description. You can use it for everything from smoothing split ends to soothing eczema; it’s particularly good as a body butter. Not all cocoa body butters are equally as
effective however; some are heavily diluted with water and packed with preservatives, colours, artificial perfumes and so on. If you’re looking for a body butter that really delivers results, I recommend Mixtress Jamaican Cocoa Body Butter – a blend of organic cocoa butter, coconut oil and sweet almond oil, which smells wonderfully chocolatey and really helps to nourish your skin. A 150ml tub costs £9.95, and a little goes a long way, so it offers great value for money. When it comes to your hair, try a hair mask by Italian brand Green Energy Organics. There are several different masks available, all priced at £15.50 and available from www.millabaci.com. La Recolte des Fleur D’Orange, for example, is a powerful blend of fatty acids and fruit extracts, including orange flower, pomegranate, rose, chamomile and grape. It’s specially formulated to give a real boost to coloured, damaged or lacklustre hair. You only need to leave the mask on for 10 minutes, but for best results sit back and relax for at least an hour. In need of a restful night’s sleep? Lavender has been used to help people to drift off for centuries. Add it to Epsom salts and you have a combination that eases aches and pains, exfoliates your skin and improves sleep. (I did mention that I love a good multi-tasker didn’t I?) Dr Teal’s Soothe and Sleep could well become your all-time favourite bath product, and as it’s available from George Home at ASDA, you can pick it up with your grocery shopping.
