Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, As we enter the autumn season Christmas is already on the menu and the decorative holly is already being splashed around (in the magazine of course, not at home!) Christmas menus are now available at many of our local restaurants and pubs, so don’t leave your Christmas party bookings to the last minute. Firewood and chimney sweeping is on the agenda to prepare us for those cosey nights by the fire. I’m particularly looking forward to this winter, as I hope to save loads of money on my heating bills, I’ve just had a wood burner installed that links up to my central heating. It was installed in June (thanks to Bruce from Bensko), and with all that horrible weather we had I actually lit the fire to give it a good test. I can’t believe we had an evening in front of the fire in June. It worked brilliantly, I was beginning to think my gas bill would require a second mortgage, it’s becoming ridiculous. My new challenge for the winter is to tame my electricity bill, but to do this I must educate my teenage son with the help of a newly aquired power monitor. He could do with his own wind tubine just to power his bedroom, it closely resembles the bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise. This month I have instroduced new content for “Kid’s Corner”, courtesy of Pheonix comics, I

hope our junior readers enjoy it. Anyway enough of my ramblings, make the most of this month, get out there and enjoy the outdoors while you can, the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October and the nights will soon be closing in. Have a great month!

put off ‘til tomorrow what you should have done today in the garden, then you may have to wait until next year (a procrastinator’s dream, that, because there’s always next year…). Unlike indoor tasks (which can happily build up and then be tackled whatever the weather), gardens, like time and the

This time last year I procrastinated – remember how gloriously hot it was last October? I think we skipped autumn and went straight from summer to winter last year; which meant I didn’t have that final tidy up in the garden. I glibly said things like - nature benefits if you don’t cut things back and tidy up - which is true, but there’s a difference between leaving a few seedheads and small piles of sticks for wildlife to shelter in - and leaving a huge tangled mess of last year’s growth and weed seedlings everywhere. Come the spring I was so busy trying to catch up with myself - and the children and grandchildren of all those weeds, that I felt like Queen Canute standing in front of a rising tide of plants.

So this October I will: •

Exciting new fundraising venture for Pilgrims Hospices Treecycling (Christmas tree recycling) a new and exciting project that was introduced by a Hospice in east Cheshire will piloted by the Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford. The Hospice in east Cheshire has been running the scheme for many years. In its first year it raised £700, now 11 years later this figure has grown to a staggering £60,000 . A group of volunteers with vans collected trees from people who have registered their trees for collection. People pay a suggested minimum donation of £4. Over the weekend of 12/13 January 2013 Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford will be carrying out a Christmas Tree collection. Unfortunately we can’t cover all areas , but if this year proves to be successful then next year we plan to develop it to cover more locations.

Mowgli Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. First of all I would like to pass on thanks to everyone who came to the Clinic’s birthday party last month. Apparently a good time was had by all (human and animal!) and the weather was nice and sunny. The good news here is that there have been no more cottage related disasters and that life has been fairly uneventful. Admittedly the nest of wasps we had last year is back but there aren’t many of them yet and they are always quite interesting to watch out of the window! Ebony and I have enjoyed a peaceful month with a lot of sitting outside in our cat run and sunbathing. This has been like a summer break for us but I was jealous to hear that Chris the vet’s Bengal cats actually went on holiday with him! They all went to a pet-friendly holiday cottage in Cornwall and the cats had a simply marvellous time exploring a new house and looking at new scenery and creatures out of the windows. We think this sounds like a great plan and are starting a campaign of our own to go on holiday. To be honest I am not sure this would work as Ebony is not very good with new things (do you remember how she was with the new duvet cover a couple of years ago?) but it is something to miaow at the humans about none the less. One day last week Clive came home covered in leaves and twigs and scratches and it turned out that he had been rescuing some ducks! He had been driving down the A20

on his way to give a talk at a local bird club when he saw 4 ducks waddling down the middle of the road about to get run over. So he stopped his car and thought he would just herd them into a nearby field. However, the ducks were not very co-operative and seemed determined to stay in the road and get themselves into trouble. Eventually he managed to corral them by a hedge and had to ring Jane for back up so she could bring a net and a box. Three ducks were easily caught but the last one kept running down the road and then into a hedge before going back into the road again- it was apparently quite a farce- so Clive ended up going into the hedge after it. By the time all 4 ducks were safe Clive was of course very late for the bird talk. He caused quite a lot of hilarity when he walked in covered in bits of hedge and with a box of ducks! The ducks were given water to drink during the talk and were then settled in back at the Clinic. A couple of days later the owner was found so the ducks are happily back on their pond safe and sound! I had better stop writing and go back outside to watch ‘shrew TV’. They are up to a lot of activity this week and I would hate to miss a good episode!

The Rotary Club By Ted Bruning We hear a lot these days about business in the community. Superstores have community liaison officers under various guises as well as a host of community action schemes ranging from Tesco’s vouchers for schools and Waitrose’s green tokens right down to people rattling collecting tins at passing customers. Local firms sponsor the planting and mowing of verges and roundabouts. It’s all good stuff. It means that a lot of work is done that wouldn’t have been done otherwise. It’s nothing to be cynical about. But it’s nothing new, either.

10

A century ago, many local businesspeople and professionals took a very broad view of their social role in their towns and cities. In an era of great poverty, poor housing, and high crime they saw themselves not only as commercial and political leaders but also (although we might wince at the term nowadays) as moral leaders. They regarded immorality both as the cause and effect of poverty, and all over the Western world groups of them formed to lobby and to take direct action on diverse social concerns such as public health, education, housing, drunkenness, prostitution, animal cruelty, and crime. One such was founded in February 1905 by four Chicago businessmen – lawyer Paul Harris, coal merchant Sylvester Schiele, mining engineer Gustave Loehr, and tailor Hiram Shorey. Together they formed a rotation club, so called because (like many other social and professional groups at the time) members took it in turns to host meetings. Unlike many other such groups, though, the “Rotary Club”, as they called it, did not confine itself to any particular cause but instead sought to promote an ideal: that of public service, integrity, and moral worth within the business community. And the business community liked it. The original group grew so rapidly that within a year it was too big to “rotate” and had to find a permanent base. In 1906 Rotary Clubs were

founded in San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles and the idea spread throughout North America. In 1912, Dublin and London became the first two overseas Rotary Clubs. By 1922 there were so many Rotary Clubs that Rotary International had to be founded. But what did they do, this legion of Rotarians worldwide? The simple answer is that they raised funds to support good causes – hospitals, social amenities, and so forth – as indeed they still do. Which is, in itself, no bad thing: but there has always been much more to Rotary than that. Chicago a century ago was a cosmopolitan city with many first- and second-generation immigrants, and the founders of Rotary had an internationalist outlook. Fostering global understanding was always a rather grand but, as it turned out, very achievable objective: as a result, Rotary Clubs were banned by the Nazis first in Germany and then throughout occupied Europe. The Communists didn’t much like Rotary, either: once the Iron Curtain fell, Rotary was suppressed in Eastern Europe too. But worldwide, the ideal of community leadership and public service has spread and there are now more than 1.2 million Rotarians in 35,000 clubs in 200 countries. You’ll find them doing everything from mentoring troubled youngsters to raising money for hospital equipment to funding international scholarships and exchanges for school and university students and postgraduates – more than 40,000 of them so far. Together, they have also donated more than $500 million in a 10year campaign to eradicate polio from the world. Rotarians might no longer talk in terms of moral leadership; but if the language has changed, the vision hasn’t. The Rotarian ideal undoubtedly underpins more modern concepts such as the Big Society; and even if you’re cynical about that on party political grounds, you can’t be cynical about so many people with so much potential influence choosing to see beyond the business of simply making money and using their positions as a power for good.

Take The Floor Katherine Sorrell offers a guide to fabulous flooring, from the traditional to the unconventional 18

Oak Palazzo Rovere – a Dutch pattern design oak floor with a satin lacquer prefinish, from £50.15 per m², Kährs, 023 9245 3045; www.kahrs.co.uk.

Timber Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less longlasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a wood-effect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a highpressure laminate surface. Carpet Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile is the toughest). Natural wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fire-resistant, but expensive; while cheaper, man-made fibres may look unattractive or not wear well. A popular solution is a combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a good quality underlay

is essential. Natural fibres In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring. Hard surfaces Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and water-resistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array of shapes, sizes and designs, but all are liable to crack if something is dropped on them. Sheet flooring Softer and warmer than stone or timber, sheet floorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork –

the home are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to lay (even on slightly uneven floors), and are easy to clean. Lino is a traditional material made from natural ingredients, and has its own lovely patina, while vinyl is a PVC-based man-made material, which comes in a huge range of textures and patterns, many of them good imitations of stone, wood or ceramic tiles. Cork, often under-rated, is hard-wearing, resilient to water and offers an interesting, natural look. Rugs With any flooring other than carpet, you will probably want to put down one or more rugs, adding softness, colour and extra interest. A rug can disguise poor flooring – and can be taken with you when you move. Often a good starting point for a decorative scheme, rugs come in an infinite variety of shapes and sizes, textures and colours, patterns and prices. There’s a wonderful range of hand-made rugs from around the world, including Indian dhurries, Greek flokatis, Middle Eastern kelims and French aubussons. Modern machinemade rugs can be very attractive, and you can even have a rug woven to your own design.

Unusual Choices •

A leather floor (tiles or sheets) is warm, soft and quiet underfoot, and requires little more than regular buffing and waxing. It wears well, too – scuffs and marks acquired over the years are part of its attraction.

Concrete floors, though cold and hard, can be dyed in innumerable colours and given an interesting variety of finishes, from polished to painted.

Rubber floors have a cool, stylish look and are great for waterproofing bathrooms. They come in tile or sheet form, and can be solid-coloured or patterned, smooth or studded.

Bamboo is thoroughly environmentally friendly, being fastgrowing and ever-regenerating. The stems are laminated together to form boards as strong as wood, then coated with lacquer for a durable surface.

Seasonal Recipe Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

28

Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

Autumn Pudding • 175g caster sugar • 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced • 100g raspberries • 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced • 100g blackcurrants or blueberries • 100g blackberries • 10 slices thick-sliced white bread • Extra fruit, to decorate

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling)

Education....

If My Body Was a Car If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I‛ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull ... But that‛s not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it‛s especially hard to see things up close My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather.

It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here‛s the worst of it --

Sudoku Solution

Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter, either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!

Crossword Solution

32

My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.

A man is stopped by the police at midnight and asked where he‛s going. “I‛m on the way to listen to a lecture about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse on the human body.” The policeman asks, “Really? And who‛s going to give a lecture at this time of night?” “My wife”

Architects are often asked to produce ‘plans’ for a domestic project but the purpose of these drawings is often not understood. This two part article outlines the basic process for a domestic project such as an extension or conversion.

Planning The majority of planned domestic projects that will result in significant changes of a property will be considered by the local council as development and will require planning permission. To gain planning permission scale drawings must be produced. These plans and elevations show the property in its existing and proposed states. These drawings along with a scaled location map are submitted to the local authority with the appropriate application form and fee. The application is then allocated a planning officer whose role is to consider the application against local planning policies together with any comments received from local residents and the parish council. This process normally takes 8 weeks from when the application is validated. Complex applications may have this period extended. Planning permission is not always required and may be covered by permitted development rights. Works covered by these rights are restricted in size and can be limiting (Before carrying out any works it is recommended

t: 01233 623403 m: 07894260417 e: johntrenaman@hotmail.co.uk

that any proposals are confirmed by the local authority as being lawful with a certificate of lawful development). Your property may also be located in a conservation area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or other designated land. These areas are protected by additional planning policies and rights such as permitted development may be removed in order to conserve the character of the area. If planning permission is granted there may be conditions attached such as the submission of details or materials prior to any works being carried out. Listed Building Consent:Works to buildings that are listed or are considered to be within the curtilage of a listed building must gain listed building consent. This is separate to planning permission. Buildings that are listed are listed in their entirety internally and externally. Some works that ordinarily would not require planning permission may require listed building consent. The key to the process of planning and listed building consent is to check before carrying out any works and wait for confirmation from the local authority.
