Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, It’s October and it’s a big month for my son as he turns 18 on the 15th. His 18 years are forever etched on my memory, as they should be, so I feel it’s only fair to ensure that this transition into adulthood is firmly etched on his. Happy birthday Luke, whatever life throws at yyou stay positive, be kind, confident and maintain your sense of humour, you’ll need it when your friends see this...!
Of course October is also the month for Halloween when freaky looking pumpkins keep any ghosts and ghouls away from our doors! Following that we have Bonfire Night. Check out this month’s magazine for a special offer on fireworks from Home Plus, they are also giving away free sparklers to all customers with no purchase necessary. Until next time have fun and stay safe. Have a great month ~ Debbie T: 01233 720488 e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk
Advertising Rates (Not inclusive of VAT) If you would like to place a celebration message in the magazine please just drop me an email. It will be added free of charge to a new section of the What’s On page. Don’t miss the deadline! The nights will start drawing in this month, especially once the clocks go BACK on Sunday 27th October, bringing British Summer Time to a close, at least we’ve had a good one this year though. As you’ll see from the front cover it’s time to get those chimneys swept (better to be safe than sorry!). An open fire at Christmas is a must in our house, it also allows the men in my family to pay tribute to the caveman within them. None of them can resist constantly checking and poking at it.

PLOT
Benefits of Garlic
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesƟng, into clearing and Ɵdying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:-
4
Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in Ɵme for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire aƩached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweetsmelling black leaf mould in one to two years Ɵme.
October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starƟng to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look aŌer your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotaƟon is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add maƩer from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flaƩened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planƟng, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.
If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the Ɵme to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anyƟme between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planƟng all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green Ɵps creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The tradiƟonal Ɵme for harvesƟng garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieƟes that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protecƟon with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starƟng ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planƟng next season.

Chilli Chicken Stew Serves 6 - 8
Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes
With Halloween at the end of the month, why not plan a ghostly gathering and serve up this hot and spicy chicken stew? Perfect for filling up hungry trick or treaters.
Ingredients: 8
• 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) • 6 large skinless chicken fillets, cut into pieces • 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 x 400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce • 1 red, 1 green and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Warm crusty bread, to serve
Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread.
Tip For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers.

Chai Stop Curries have been producing a range of award-winning curries for over 15 years. The inspiration behind the Chai Stop stems from Tina’s travels in India and the culture, fragrance, spices and passion of its people for their food. Tina and Isobel have been creating and perfecting their curries since 1998, and continue to be ‘hands-on’ in their kitchen with the same passion, care and enthusiasm that inspired The Chai Stop 15 years ago. Over the years they have tried and tested, tweaked and perfected their ‘main-stays’ on The Chai Stop menu. To this day they cook curries from scratch in small batches, while still managing to keep things interesting by experimenting and introducing new recipes.
A range of over 40 curries/ dhals and vegetarian dishes, many dairy free and all wheat and gluten free. All orders of £40 or more are delivered free on a monthly basis as well as the range being stocked by a selection of local farm shops. It is believed that around 4236 BC, the Egyptians discovered the `Dog Star` rising alongside the sun every 365 days, it is believed to be “one of the earliest years recorded in history” and would later evolve into the current 365-day calendar. 3500 BC Egyptians used giant obelisk shaped objects which projected shadows on the ground to track the 12 parts of the day we know them as sundials. The Greeks then invented water clocks but they had problems with erosion so they

The first modern mechanical clock was created some time between 500-1000 AD in Europe the exact date is unknown. It used weights that moved gears which in turn moved a single hour hand. These clocks were very large and require the weights to be reset 5 times a day. It wasn’t until centuries later that the next major hurdle in clock making was reached when the clocks driving weights were replaced with the invention of the coiled spring by Peter Henlein this was around 1500. Then in 1504 he invented the first portable clock this odd looking egg

The telling of time rapidly started to move on when in 1577 the invention of the minute hand was designed by a Danish astronomer. Then in 1600, Burgi was also responsible for the first clock featuring minutes and seconds as well. The next few centuries saw the evolution of pocket watches they became smaller, and more accurate and very ornately designed. In 1704 Facio came to London with an idea to use jewelled pivot bearings. His idea was that precious stones would not wear or erode like metal pivots would this is when the jewelled movement was invented and is still used today. Over the years watches got more and more accurate. Abraham-Louis Perrelet has the distinction of one of the biggest advancements in clockmaking when he designed the first self winding watch in 1770. The pocket watch was called the pedometer named after the source of its power a weighted lever that jerks as the person

Channel Radio was born mid 2012 as a community radio station for those living in and around the Romney Marsh area. In fact, just about the same area as The Village Directory covers. The station’s owners were determined it would differ from other community radio stations, in that, whilst staying true to the idea of community radio, they would attempt to attract a far larger audience from a wider area. To do this they had to forsake the idea of a local FM frequency which only gives a listening area of approximately five miles and direct their broadcasts through the internet. As it is estimated a third of all listeners, tune into radio stations via the internet, using ipods, iphones, smart phones, laptops and tablets Channel Radio can reach out, not only nationally but internationally as well. Their core programmes like Marsh Mellow, which is broadcast live from 4pm to 5 pm every Thursday, concentrates on local matters concerning Romney Marsh and the surrounding areas. However, it is not only listened to, by the community it is meant for, but also has dedicated listeners in South Carolina, San Francsico, and California. The lifestyle and well being programme, ‘Who cares Wins’ on Monday afternoons between 3 & 4pm. is also proving popular according to presenters Angela, Sue & Jan. Iphones, ipads and smart phones have revolutionised our listening habits, enabling us to listen to programmes when it suits us, rather than when they are actually broadcast. Channel Radio have followed in the footsteps of such august bodies as the BBC by making their progammes available 24/7 . To access
any of Channel Radio’s programmes go to www. channelradio.co.uk/listen-again and take your pick. There are a number of exciting programmes planned for the future, not normally associated with community radio, in the form drama and comedy. But more of that next time.

Arthri s has various types of which Rheumatoid and Osteoarthri s are perhaps the most common. The disease is debilita ng and around 10 million people in the UK are currently affected. Indeed it is not restricted just to adults - people of all ages can be affected including children. It inflames joints and can cause aches and pains in joints, bones and muscles. Simple daily tasks can become difficult and painful but there are many people, services and products that can help adjust to manage with work and home life. How severe and for how long the affects last vary on the type of arthri s diagnosed and at the moment there is no known cure. Gentle exercise, good diet and pain management techniques are ways of taking control over the condi on.

Nordic Walking…. Coming to a Village Near You! If you’re out and about in the village, chances are that you’ll run into a group of people, all striding purposefully, each with a set of walking sticks. To some, they might look skiers in denial about the end of the snow season, but they’re actually out doing something called Nordic Walking. What Is Nordic Walking? Originally devised as a method for competitive cross country skiers to maintain fitness, Nordic Walking has developed into an exercise activity that cuts across age and fitness barriers, allowing people who always thought they hated traditional exercise to participate in a pursuit that allows them to get fit without even noticing!
• Sitting upright, alternately press one fist, then the other firmly into the desk. Do this repeatedly for 15 – 20 repetitions. • As you press, notice how a wave of contractions passes through your abdominal muscles, with your upper back, arm, shoulder and chest muscles contracting each time you push. How does that feel? Remember, if you’re out Nordic Walking, you’ll perform 1,800 – 2,200 contractions of all these muscles per mile! Nordic Walking East Kent runs classes in villages in the Ashford, Canterbury and Folkestone areas. Call 0845 486 0899 or email nordicwalkingeastkent@gmail.com to book a free taster session
12 Reasons to Nordic Walk 1. Burns 20-40% more calories than an average walk 2. Whole body workout 3. Lessens impact on joints 4. Great for neck, shoulders and backs 5. Increases cardiovascular endurance 6. Builds muscle strength & endurance 7. Easy to learn 8. Sociable and fun 9. Affordable 10. Can be done anywhere! 11. “Green” exercise 12. Suitable for everyone Try this simple exercise to get an idea of the effect of Nordic Walking on the upper body: • Sitting at your desk, raise both arms out in front of you, extending them as if offering a friendly handshake. • Make a loose fist of each hand and place both, thumbs up on your desk. wit & wisdom
Those Were The Days Close your eyes and go back in time, before the Internet or the Apple Mac, before Xbox or Playstation, way back. I’m talking about Hide and Seek in the park and the corner shop, then there’s: • Hopscotch, Butterscotch, Skipping, Handstands.
• When nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there.
• Football with an old can and climbing trees.
• When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.
• Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace. • Bazooka Joe bubble gum. • Watching Saturday morning cartoons.... • Short commercials, The Double Deckers, Road Runner, He-Man, Zeebedee. • Tiswas or Swapshop? Staying up for Doctor Who. • When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.
26
• Cops & Robbers, Cowboys & Indians, and Zorro. • Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
• When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed them or use them to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. • When being sent to the head’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc. Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! - And some of us are still afraid of them!! • “Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.
• Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
• The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
• Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
• Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult.
• Water balloons were the ultimate weapon
• Nobody was prettier than Mum.
• Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Choppers and Grifters.
• Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
• Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
• Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. • Two types of trainers - girls and boys, and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E. • It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends. • You didn’t sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.
• Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin. • Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true • Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors. If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.

the home Ten ways to create a new room in your house Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home. Convert a loft space into an extra bedroom. Hammonds Furniture (0800 021 4360; www.hammonds-uk.com)
1. Build an extension Pros Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the 28 first floor, too. Cons Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. Regulations Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www. planningportal.gov.uk for more information. 2. Convert the loft Pros Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden. Cons Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t
traditionally built. Regulations As for extensions. 3. Convert the cellar Pros Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home. Cons Often more expensive, per square metre, than other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to get enough headroom and light into the new room. Regulations If you just want to turn an existing cellar into a normal room, it’s classed as a change of use and doesn’t need planning permission. But if you lower the floor or extend, you’re likely to need permission, so check with your local authority. And you’ll need party wall consent from any adjoining neighbours. In both cases you must comply with Building Regulations. 4. Add a conservatory Pros Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter
By Katherine Sorrell and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. Regulations Many conservatories are exempt from planning permission and building regulations, but check with your local planning department first. 5. Build a room in the garden Pros The building work will hardly bother you. Cons Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. Regulations A simple garden room may be exempt from planning permission and Building Regulations, but if it’s laid on permanent foundations and connected to mains power, water and sewerage, you’ll need both. 6. Divide a room into two Pros Carving up a large space to add another room is useful and can add value, even though you’re not actually creating any extra space. Cons You’ll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window.
Regulations Planning permission is not usually needed, but Building Regulations apply to new walls, doors, windows and electrical work. 7. Put in an ensuite Pros Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space. Cons Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value. Regulations Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is. 8. Build on top of your garage Pros A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy. Cons Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned.
the home
Regulations You’ll need planning permission and Building Regulations. 9. Convert your understairs space Pros Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons You’ll have to find extra space to store that understairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. Regulations Building Regulations approval is necessary if you’re installing a bathroom. 10. Convert your garage Pros It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it
into a valuable indoor space. Cons Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Regulations Planning permission is not usually required, but Building Regulations approval is.
How much value can I add? Before you embark on any major home improvement project, ask a local estate agent to value your home, and to estimate how much value they think your project would add.
