20 12

Be it companionship or just someone to sit with a relative, our Private Care Service carers can come to your house and help. Visits can be for as little as one hour or as long as 15 hours. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.

Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone,

do this I must educate my teenage son with the help of a newly aquired power monitor. He could do with his own wind tubine just to power his bedroom, it closely resembles the bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise.

As we enter the autumn season Christmas is already on the menu and the decorative holly is already being splashed around (in the magazine of course, not at home!) Christmas menus are now available at many of our local restaurants and pubs, so don’t leave your Christmas party bookings to the last minute. Firewood and chimney sweeping is on the agenda to prepare us for those cosey nights by the fire.

This month I have instroduced new content for “Kid’s Corner”, courtesy of Pheonix comics, I hope our junior readers enjoy it. Anyway enough of my ramblings, make the most of this month, get out there and enjoy the outdoors while you can, the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October and the nights will soon be closing in.

I’m particularly looking forward to this winter, as I hope to save loads of money on my heating bills, I’ve just had a wood burner installed that links up to my central heating. It was installed in June (thanks to Bruce from Bensko), and with all that horrible weather we had I actually lit the fire to give it a good test. I can’t believe we had an evening in front of the fire in June. It worked brilliantly, I was beginning to think my gas bill would require a second mortgage, it’s becoming ridiculous. My new challenge for the winter is to tame my electricity bill, but to

Have a great month!

the garden

The Garden Shed October By Jackie Witcher - Tenterden & District Horticultural Society

So once more, its time to be putting the garden

to bed for the winter months. The runners have all been cleared out but I have left the roots in until Spring, wanting to keep the nitrogen nodules as long as possible in the ground. Now I must tell you that I had a reasonable crop of runners, not as good as usual as I couldn’t get any of my favourite seed Enorma, but not too bad. However I was chatting to a young lady who lived in Winchelsea and apparently the crops in that area were appalling. We discussed what the cause could have been, weather, bees, etc, but couldn’t come up with an answer. Her runners set flowers and she grew sweet peas by the row, so they were happily pollinated by bees, but the bean never set. Like us, her original bean row rotted in the ground and

she had to replant three times. Perhaps even after all that time the ground could have still been too cold. We shall never know the cause. Mother Nature again?

I

had a reasonable crop of parsnips, they always taste better when they are home grown, and cook so much quicker. Try them mashed with potatoes for a topping on your next Shepherds Pie. It will be a real treat. My leeks I shall leave in, just pulling those that I want when I want them and as for the spring onions? The less said about those the better. I think I got about ten from the row. I will never know why I can’t grow spring onions. They started off so promisingly, then it all went to pot. (and yes I have tried growing them in pots).

After I have cleaned out the vege patch, I spread

over the spent compost from my tubs etc and give a top dressing of chicken manure and my lovely 3X manure, lightly forking it into the top. (That is after I have pre-warned the neighbour!!) I have got to say I am always happy once the garden clean up is finished and I give a sigh of relief once its done. Then, with the help of husband, its time to tackle the greenhouse. (yuk) I turf everything out and give it a good clean and tidy round, turning over the ground shingle. I check all the pots that I store in there evicting any creatures I come across. Then wash the pots over. I think the greenhouse is harder to deal with than the garden itself. Perhaps its psychological or the fact you tend to spend more time on your knees!

the garden I have already started potting up my bulbs ready for

the Spring, this I started in September. I’m using the bulbs kept from last year. I just lifted them, let them dry in the sun, trim the roots and the dead foliage from the tops, and using old fruit bags which I kept from buying oranges and the like, stored them on a lower shelf in the greenhouse. I must admit that a mouse got in and had a good lunch at my expense on some crocus bulbs, but I don’t mind sharing too much. After all they had multiplied (the crocus that is not the mouse!!!) I have also lifted the geraniums from the patio and potted them on into 7” pots. I take off all flowers or flowering shoots, clean them over removing dead or rough looking leaves. Give them a tiny drink and put in the now clean greenhouse to overwinter. I only give them a drink during the winter months if they look particularly parched. I keep removing any flower shoots as soon as they appear, so all nourishment goes to the plant itself. Other than that, just leave them to do their own thing.

Sitting here I have been thinking of the garden

and what has been going on, and I must admit that the clematis over the second rose arch (baby blue eyes), has not done as well this year. To start with it flowered well but finished abruptly in middle August. Normally I would have had a second flourish of flowers, but they didn’t appear. I shall see what occurs next year, if it’s the same then we shall investigate.

Well for once I am bang on time for coffee, how’s

that for timing. Today its mincemeat slices with an almond topping. Which reminds me (sorry) that Christmas is just around the corner!

Lions Take Pot Luck Sudoku How to Play: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!

Rye Lions with their partners and friends had a relaxing evening after their intensive fund-raising activities over the summer months. In addition to raising over £7,000 at the Annual Rye Raft Race and Fete, the Lions have attended fetes at Westfield, Iden, Northiam and Bodiam as well as the Rye Horse and Dog Show and the Maritime Festival and at these events raised some £2,500 with their stalls. Therefore, they were happy to relax and enjoy a “Pot-Luck” evening in the Icklesham garden of Lions Vice-President, Sue Clay.

6

This is the fourth time that they have held this event involving everyone providing one meal course which can be either a main course or pudding. Although this sounds a bit “pot-luck” and the Lions could all end up eating apple pie, in the event, it always works out to a balanced meal – and drinks! The fetes were their last fund-raising events of the summer and the next big Lions fund raising events will not take place until later this year. However, the Lions are not resting on their laurels and will still be assisting at events where needed and making donations to worthy causes. In the next week, they will be driving up to the Medway with a truck full of much needed necessities for orphanages and schools in the Gomel area of Belarus, mostly collected by Judy Pope. The Lions are always on the look-out for new members and have two potential members at the moment. They would welcome enquiries from adults in the Rye area, and their area includes villages out as far as Hawkhurst, Iden and Bodiam, and anyone interested in having fun raising money for those less fortunate and enjoying monthly socials should ring 01797 252382 or visit their website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/ryedistrict/

Seasonal Delight Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

10

Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

Autumn Pudding • 175g caster sugar • 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced • 100g raspberries • 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced • 100g blackcurrants or blueberries • 100g blackberries • 10 slices thick-sliced white bread • Extra fruit, to decorate

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling)

Take The Floor Katherine Sorrell offers a guide to fabulous flooring, from the traditional to the unconventional 16

Oak Palazzo Rovere – a Dutch pattern design oak floor with a satin lacquer prefinish, from £50.15 per m², Kährs, 023 9245 3045; www.kahrs.co.uk.

Timber Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less longlasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a wood-effect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a highpressure laminate surface. Carpet Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile is the toughest). Natural wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fire-resistant, but expensive; while cheaper, man-made fibres may look unattractive or not wear well. A popular solution is a combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a good quality underlay

is essential. Natural fibres In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring. Hard surfaces Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and water-resistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array of shapes, sizes and designs, but all are liable to crack if something is dropped on them. Sheet flooring Softer and warmer than stone or timber, sheet floorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork –

the home

are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to lay (even on slightly uneven floors), and are easy to clean. Lino is a traditional material made from natural ingredients, and has its own lovely patina, while vinyl is a PVC-based man-made material, which comes in a huge range of textures and patterns, many of them good imitations of stone, wood or ceramic tiles. Cork, often under-rated, is hard-wearing, resilient to water and offers an interesting, natural look. Rugs With any flooring other than carpet, you will probably want to put down one or more rugs, adding softness, colour and extra interest. A rug can disguise poor flooring – and can be taken with you when you move. Often a good starting point for a decorative scheme, rugs come in an infinite variety of shapes and sizes, textures and colours, patterns and prices. There’s a wonderful range of hand-made rugs from around the world, including Indian dhurries, Greek flokatis, Middle Eastern kelims and French aubussons. Modern machinemade rugs can be very attractive, and you can even have a rug woven to your own design.

Unusual Choices •

A leather floor (tiles or sheets) is warm, soft and quiet underfoot, and requires little more than regular buffing and waxing. It wears well, too – scuffs and marks acquired over the years are part of its attraction.

Concrete floors, though cold and hard, can be dyed in innumerable colours and given an interesting variety of finishes, from polished to painted.

Rubber floors have a cool, stylish look and are great for waterproofing bathrooms. They come in tile or sheet form, and can be solid-coloured or patterned, smooth or studded.

Bamboo is thoroughly environmentally friendly, being fastgrowing and ever-regenerating. The stems are laminated together to form boards as strong as wood, then coated with lacquer for a durable surface. by Katherine Sorrell

Naughty Nightwear I wish I was an actress; I wish I’d feigned delight When I opened up the present from my husband just last night I’d suggested naughty nightwear; sleek and smooth and made of lace I need them - as my lingerie drawer’s a bit of a disgrace He handed me my present; it was Long Johns in pale grey For once I couldn’t speak as I was not sure what to say He smiled at me so brightly, said “the weather’s been so cold And these are very ‘you’ Love, if I might just be so bold” His face is now so bruised and there’s a bandage on his head, So one of us, at least, is wearing something new in bed. ©Jan Jack 2012, Commission a bespoke verse at www.perfectverse.co.uk

The Rotary Club 26

We hear a lot these days about business in the community. Superstores have community liaison officers under various guises as well as a host of community action schemes ranging from Tesco’s vouchers for schools and Waitrose’s green tokens right down to people rattling collecting tins at passing customers. Local firms sponsor the planting and mowing of verges and roundabouts. It’s all good stuff. It means that a lot of work is done that wouldn’t have been done otherwise. It’s nothing to be cynical about. But it’s nothing new, either. A century ago, many local businesspeople and professionals took a very broad view of their social role in their towns and cities. In an era of great poverty, poor housing, and high crime they saw themselves not only as commercial and political leaders but also (although we might wince at the term nowadays) as moral leaders. They regarded immorality both as the cause and effect of poverty, and all over the Western world groups of them formed to lobby and to take direct action on diverse social concerns such as public health, education, housing, drunkenness, prostitution, animal cruelty, and crime. One such was founded in February 1905 by four Chicago businessmen – lawyer Paul Harris, coal merchant Sylvester Schiele, mining engineer Gustave Loehr, and tailor Hiram Shorey. Together they formed a rotation club, so called because (like many other social and professional groups at the time) members took it in turns to host meetings. Unlike many other such groups, though, the “Rotary Club”, as they called it,

did not confine itself to any particular cause but instead sought to promote an ideal: that of public service, integrity, and moral worth within the business community. And the business community liked it. The original group grew so rapidly that within a year it was too big to “rotate” and had to find a permanent base. In 1906 Rotary Clubs were founded in San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles and the idea spread throughout North America. In 1912, Dublin and London became the first two overseas Rotary Clubs. By 1922 there were so many Rotary Clubs that Rotary International had to be founded. But what did they do, this legion of Rotarians worldwide? The simple answer is that they raised funds to support good causes – hospitals, social amenities, and so forth – as indeed they still do. Which is, in itself, no bad thing: but there has always been much more to Rotary than that. Chicago a century ago was a cosmopolitan city with many first- and second-generation immigrants, and the founders of Rotary had an internationalist outlook. Fostering global understanding was always a rather grand but, as it turned out, very achievable objective: as a result, Rotary Clubs were banned by the Nazis first in Germany and then throughout occupied Europe. The Communists didn’t much like Rotary, either: once the Iron Curtain fell, Rotary was suppressed in Eastern Europe too. But worldwide, the ideal of community leadership and public service has spread and there are now more than 1.2 million Rotarians in 35,000 clubs in 200 countries.

the home You’ll find them doing everything from mentoring troubled youngsters to raising money for hospital equipment to funding international scholarships and exchanges for school and university students and postgraduates – more than 40,000 of them so far. Together, they have also donated more than $500 million in a 10-year campaign to eradicate polio from the world.

concepts such as the Big Society; and even if you’re cynical about that on party political grounds, you can’t be cynical about so many people with so much potential influence choosing to see beyond the business of simply making money and using their positions as a power for good.

Rotarians might no longer talk in terms of moral leadership; but if the language has changed, the vision hasn’t. The Rotarian ideal undoubtedly underpins more modern

If My Body Was a Car If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I‛ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull ... But that‛s not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it‛s especially hard to see things up close My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather.

It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here‛s the worst of it --

Sudoku Solution

Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter, either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!

Crossword Solution

28

My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.

A man is stopped by the police at midnight and asked where he‛s going. “I‛m on the way to listen to a lecture about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse on the human body.” The policeman asks, “Really? And who‛s going to give a lecture at this time of night?” “My wife”

Sign of Our Times

Winter Wardrobe Blues Well, the last flickers of the Indian summer have finally faded, and bright October days can be chilly, so it’s time to put the shorts and sandals and old tour t-shirts away for a few months and dig out the winter clothes. Shouldn’t need to buy anything new: I have plenty of stuff left over from previous years. Which is handy as times are tight, and the more I waste on clothes means the less I can waste on beer. But anyway, who needs to spend a fortune on a new wardrobe every season? Let’s start by testing that ancient proposition: the cat sat on the mat. No it didn’t. The cat sat on my hat, actually. In fact it’s nested in it. It’s now a dense rug of cat-hair and utterly irredeemable, so I shall start collating the season’s wardrobe by binning the beanie and putting a new one on the shopping list. Next, gloves. I don’t wear gloves often these days. I only ever used them for snowballing, and at my advanced age I don’t have to do that anymore. Still, you need a pair against the unlikely eventuality of, say, having to dig the car out of a snowdrift. So it’s now that I discover that I have many gloves, but none of them match. So, add new gloves to the list. Now obviously you need a nice woolly jumper for the winter, and as it happens I have one. I hate it. I hate all jumpers. They’re cumbersome things, make it impossible to move freely, and the moment you make the transition from freezing street to overheated department store or pub or library you start sweating like an overworked horse. So no new jumper this year. On the other hand, I don’t want to freeze every time I nip out

for a paper. I know I haven’t worn a vest for, oh, 40 years. I gave them up when I was a teenager as an act of unobtrusive rebellion. But they do keep you warm. OK, some vests, then. I shouldn’t need a new coat, though. I’ve had the same coat for years and years. It’s lovely and toastie and in excellent nick. Cost me a few bob, but it’s been worth it. Rather an odd assortment of buttons by now, mind, but nobody’s ever commented on it. Hang on, though: if I’m going to be wearing a vest from now on, my warm old coat might be a bit too warm. Lots of thin layers, that’s what they recommend nowadays. Better look for a slightly lighter one, then. I’m definitely all right for dog-walking shoes, though, with a choice of hiking boots or wellies for seasonal snow, slush, or mud. Uh-oh... the boots are fine, but there’s a deficit in the sock department. I like my boots roomy, so I can wear nice thick socks to cuddle my toes. But looking at my rather sad assortment of thermals, I see they’ve all mysteriously developed holes. In olden days my mum would have darned these, but I haven’t seen a darning mushroom in years and even if I had, I wouldn’t know what to do with it. So it’s out with the old, and off to Edinburgh Woollen Mills for the new. Hang on – that’s new beanie, gloves, vests, coat, and walking socks. This October’s clothes-shop is beginning to look expensive. Think I’ll stay indoors until the January sales...
