“With reference to my recent treatment at Woodbury Dental and Implant Clinic with Dr V J Vadgama, I have had a full mouth restoration. You undertook the top arch treatment including tooth extraction, bone grafting to both sinus and dental implant placement. I am delighted with the results. I talk, smile and eat as if I have natural teeth. The treatment involved no pain, just minor discomfort. Your chair side manner was exemplary.” Mrs A.K.L (Canterbury)

Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, It’s October and it’s a big month for my son as he turns 18 on the 15th. His 18 years are forever etched on my memory, as they should be, so I feel it’s only fair to ensure that this transition into adulthood is firmly etched on his. Happy ppy birthdayy Luke, whatever life throws at you stay positive, be kind, confident and maintain your sense of humour, you’ll need it when your friends see this...! If you would like to place a celebration message in the magazine please just drop me an email. It will be added free of charge to a new section of the What’s On page. Don’t miss the deadline! The nights will start drawing in this month, especially once the clocks go BACK on Sunday 27th October, bringing British Summer Time to a close, at least we’ve had a good one this year though. It’s time to get those chimneys swept (better to be safe than sorry!). An open fire at Christmas is a must in our house, it also allows the men in my family to pay tribute to the caveman within them. None of them can resist constantly checking and poking at it. Of course October is also the month for Halloween when freaky looking pumpkins keep any ghosts and ghouls away from our doors! Following that we have Bonfire Night. Check out this month’s magazine for a special offer on fireworks from Home Plus, they are also giving away free sparklers to all customers with no purchase necessary. Until next time have fun and stay safe. Have a great month ~ Debbie e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk T: 01233 720488

on your
PLOT
Benefits of Garlic
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesƟng, into clearing and Ɵdying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:-
4
Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in Ɵme for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire aƩached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweetsmelling black leaf mould in one to two years Ɵme.
October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starƟng to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look aŌer your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotaƟon is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add maƩer from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flaƩened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planƟng, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.
If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the Ɵme to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anyƟme between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planƟng all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green Ɵps creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The tradiƟonal Ɵme for harvesƟng garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieƟes that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protecƟon with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starƟng ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planƟng next season.

For thousands of years, ancient civilizations became unreliable. There was also a problem
have used celestial bodies to measure the passage of time. The Sumerians tracked the movements of planets and stars to record the seasons, and even created ancient calendars to record lunar cycles. It is believed that around 4236 BC, the Egyptians discovered the `Dog Star` rising alongside the sun every 365 days, it is believed to be “one of the earliest years recorded in history” and would later evolve into the current 365-day calendar.

3500 BC Egyptians used giant obelisk shaped objects which projected shadows on the ground to track the 12 parts of the day we know them as sundials. The Greeks then invented water clocks but they had problems with erosion so they
that during the winter as they would freeze up. So then along came sand clocks, we know them as an hour glass. The first modern mechanical clock was created some time between 500-1000 AD in Europe the exact date is unknown. It used weights that moved gears which in turn moved a single hour hand. These clocks were very large and require the weights to be reset 5 times a day. It wasn’t until centuries later that the next major hurdle in clock making was reached when the clocks driving weights were replaced with the invention of the coiled spring by Peter Henlein this was around 1500. Then in 1504 he invented the first portable clock this odd looking egg

the home shaped thing was made from iron and it only had an hour hand and no protective covering over the dial. The telling of time rapidly started to move on when in 1577 the invention of the minute hand was designed by a Danish astronomer. Then in 1600, Burgi was also responsible for the first clock featuring minutes and seconds as well. The next few centuries saw the evolution of pocket watches they became smaller, and more accurate and very ornately designed. In 1704 Facio came to London with an idea to use jewelled pivot bearings. His idea was that precious stones would not wear or erode like metal pivots would this is when the jewelled movement was invented and is still used today. Over the years watches got more and more accurate. Abraham-Louis Perrelet has the distinction of one of the biggest advancements in clockmaking when he designed the first self winding watch in 1770. The pocket watch was called the pedometer named after the source of its power a weighted lever that jerks as the person

While these many historic dates were important to the evolution of timekeeping it was April 19th 1891 that changed “time as we know it today. Due to a malfunctioning conductors watch two trains collided near Cleveland, Ohio, Killing 11 people. News of this disaster quickly spread launching a demand for all railroads (and communities) to adopt a timekeeping standard. Suddenly the modern world developed a fascination with `accurate` time.

Always here to help In the latest in our regular series of articles regarding legal matters, Katrina Kemp, Solicitor at Pengelly & Rylands, gives some advice on Wills, Powers of Attorney and selling your home. As we get older we tend to use solicitors more – perhaps to make a Will, to make plans for our future needs, in case we should become unable to deal with our affairs ourselves, or maybe to buy a property. At Pengelly & Rylands we can help with all of these issues. We understand that it is important that you feel confident with your solicitor. That you feel able to ask questions and speak to your solicitor on a one-to-one basis. We value good service and will deal with your matter professionally and with integrity, from your very first enquiry, and we will act, at all times, in your best interests.
10
We are always here to help you achieve the result you want. In order for us to do this we need to know what you are planning to do. Here are some examples of what you should consider before making your appointment with us: If you are thinking of writing a Will, you will need to consider who you want to act as your Executors, who you want to benefit from your Will and most importantly what you want your Will to achieve. You should consider, before you come to see us, what you want to happen with your house, possessions and finances. If you are not sure, we can always offer advice. If you are considering making a Lasting Power of Attorney, you should think very carefully about who will be your Attorney(s). You should consider if you want a replacement Attorney, to act if your Attorney(s) cannot act for you if the time comes. You will also need to choose someone “to be told” who is given the opportunity to raise any concerns or objections, if and when the Lasting Power of Attorney comes to be registered. A Certificate Provider will also need to be appointed, to confirm that you understand the significance of the Lasting Power of Attorney - perhaps your GP or a longstanding friend.
Katrina Kemp Solicitor
If you are considering selling your property, you should contact your solicitor early on. This will give you and your solicitor time to get the legal paperwork in order. You will need to find your title deeds, planning and/or building regulations approval documents, guarantees and surveys. You will need to arrange for an Energy Performance Certificate to be completed and you will need to complete the Property Information and Fittings and Contents forms. Again, we can help you with all of these things. Being prepared and organised can help us deal with your matter more efficiently. If you would like to discuss with us how we can help in preparing your Will, a Lasting Power of Attorney or your house sale or purchase, please call us on 01580 762248.

Was it James Bond or Del Trotter? Images courtessy of Tony Coombes Photography
T The record crowd of several thousand spectators were delighted by one of s the rafts entered in this year’s Annual Rye Raft Race organised by Rye and District Lions Club. Unbelievably, the Dist raft crewed by Woody Plant Hire, r was w an actual Reliant Robin car. Therefore, the Lions were not T sure if this was an James Bond s amphibious car or an escapee from a Only Fools and Horses. On seeing O the th crew of Batman and Robin, they were obviously the latter. w

The Th Lions were pleased to see a total of eleven rafts competing in the event eve with eight finishing the course. The huge number of spectators lining the bank and the road bridge clapped eb with with great enthusiasm the crew from the th he Ambrette Restaurant on each lap. laap. The four man crew, whose raft seemed to have been constructed se eem from a few planks on top of plastic f blocks, capsized four times. After blo each eac capsize, the crew scrambled aboard to continue in the race. ab Some may have been surprised So at the casual dress of Rye’s Mayor, Shawn Rogers as he presented S the th trophies, but he had gamely helped to crew the raft from the h Queens Head Inn and according Q to rumour ended up in the river. Crews and spectators had great fun in bombarding each g other with copious quantities of ot o flour o and water bombs. All crew members were presented with m a certificate which said they had survived the Race. su After Aft the heavy rain of the previous day, day the weather was perfect and the Lions car park quickly filled with some 400 cars. The stalls were crowded with the public who seemed crow to b be even more generous with their

donations and in “having a go” on the various stalls. The Lions are still finalising the total raised during the day, but they estimate that, including the raft sponsorship, a total of £8,000 was raised. The majority of this will be donated over the year to local charities and good causes. The 72 page Raft Race programme was a complete sellout and the Lions appreciate the over 80 local shops and companies that advertise in it. The overall winner was a raft crewed by a combined team from Lady Penelope Hairdressers and the Windmill Garage, Rolvenden who completed the course in 20 minutes 14 seconds, with their synchronised paddles flashing in the sun. Second was “The Good Ship Pritchard” crewed by Bournes in 21 minutes 44 seconds, winning the trophy for a crew of ten or more. The third raft to finish was from Atlas Industrial Park in a time of 23 minutes 55 seconds and they won the trophy for a crew of seven to nine. Fourth was Rye Bonfire Society in 24 minutes 30 seconds and fifth was Canton Marshall Arts in 26 minutes 38 seconds. The crew from the Queens Head, Rye, came in sixth in 30 minutes 15 seconds. Another raft with a TV theme, Thunderbird, finished seventh with a time of 35 minutes 22 seconds. Woody Plant Hire, also known as Batman and Robin, in their Reliant Robin car finished in 39 minutes dead and after paddling such a heavy craft seemed it. They also deservedly won the award for the Most Original Raft. The rafts “Another Logistical Nightmare”, the Bedford Arms and the Ambrette Restaurant did not manage to complete the 3 laps. However, the Bedford Arms won the trophy for Best Fancy Dress and Rye Lions decided that the Ambrette Restaurant should receive a special award for their valiant efforts after so many capsizes. The Lions wish to express their thanks to the people of Rye and others attending who gave such superb support on the day, the raft crews, the shops that provided prizes for their stalls, the Rye Harbour Master, James Bateman and his crew, Rye Harbour Marine for providing the rescue boats, St Johns Ambulance, the stall holders, Richie McGowan and his fellow musicians who entertained the public all afternoon. Thanks are also due to Jempsons Haulage for the loan of their trailer for the bands and all the Lions, their families and the Friends of Rye Lions for all their hard work on the day.

leisure The Worlds Wonder Warehorne Since 1860 there have been 12 owners of the Worlds Wonder in Warehorne; Kathy and John are moving up the list of landlords’ longevity at the Wonder, having bought the business in 2005 they have been there for 8 years; where most previous incumbents have had 5 years or less at the Wonder. How is it that they are probably the longest serving owners of this type of business for miles around? Other business from Aldington to Kenardington from Kingsnorth to Brenzet from High Halden to New Romney and beyond have either changed landlords (some more than once) or sadly closed altogether.

for service and hospitality from Ashford & Tenterden Tourist Association by a secret shopper; because it’s the meals that have helped the business survive through the difficult times of the credit crunch. Their philosophy is ‘Food like Mum makes’, simple good traditional home cooking. All of the dishes served at the wonder are cooked on the premises by Kathy and Alison, they are always looking to add traditional meals to the special menu, such as homemade suet puddings, homemade pies, and oxtail stew. Their motto is ‘The Wonder - Where meals are to dine for’ Since buying the business, they have continued to increase the homemade offerings encompassing starters, main courses and desserts, and even offer homemade scones with cream teas, and cakes. They recently were awarded for their customer service during a secret shopper campaign by Day featuring an EVERHOT cooking demonstration. View the latest pieces of bespoke kitchen furniture in their new look showroom and see an EVERHOT electric range cooker in action. Throughout the day, watch the chef rustle up some delectable nibbles and demonstrate some key Autumnal dishes, which of course guests may sample with a glass of bubbles! leisure the Ashford and Tenterden tourist association, and in the past won awards for their meals. A major event for the business to display their homemade credentials is the Pudding night. The night starts with a carvery followed by around 20 homemade desserts created by Alison to sample. This is an all you can eat event, but customers are advised it is a marathon not a sprint; a table quiz is provided as evening entertainment while customers try as many or as much as they like. John said “Alison sets herself a goal of providing different desserts, which have a theme i.e. Star Wars on May the 4th, Independence day in July, Back to school in September and Guy Fawkes in November”. A multiple choice vegetarian menu is provided unlike many other establishments offering a token vegetarian option, the Wonder provides a choice of around five or six true vegetarian dishes equivalent to the number of dishes on
their main menu. Kathy said, “Vegetarians have told us that many restaurants offer a token choice, well we want to give real options; from a casserole to a curry, quiches to tofu we want vegetarians to feel valued, and make their experience with us a pleasurable one”. On Friday & Saturday fresh fish is added to the menu; not just battered cod and chips, although that is available if desired, but dishes including sea bream, trout, plaice, mackerel and other fruits of the sea. So why not give them a call, and book a table. Special diets can be accommodated subject to discussion. Christmas day and party bookings being taken now. wit & wisdom
Those Were The Days Close your eyes and go back in time, before the Internet or the Apple Mac, before Xbox or Playstation, way back. I’m talking about Hide and Seek in the park and the corner shop, then there’s: • Hopscotch, Butterscotch, Skipping, Handstands.
• When nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there.
• Football with an old can and climbing trees.
• When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.
• Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace. • Bazooka Joe bubble gum. • Watching Saturday morning cartoons.... • Short commercials, The Double Deckers, Road Runner, He-Man, Zeebedee. • Tiswas or Swapshop? Staying up for Doctor Who. • When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.
26
• Cops & Robbers, Cowboys & Indians, and Zorro. • Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
• When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed them or use them to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. • When being sent to the head’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc. Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! - And some of us are still afraid of them!! • “Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.
• Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
• The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
• Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
• Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult.
• Water balloons were the ultimate weapon
• Nobody was prettier than Mum.
• Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Choppers and Grifters.
• Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
• Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
• Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. • Two types of trainers - girls and boys, and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E. • It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends. • You didn’t sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.
• Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin. • Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true • Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors. If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.

you might lose your licence. It is worth checking the dates carefully and keeping the envelope as evidence. There is still an obligation to provide the information by sending back a properly completed and signed form but a prosecution for the offence may be impossible.
Drivers face prosecution for a very wide range of road traffic offences. The most common Road traffic law is very technical and a careful ones are speeding, careless driving, mobile assessment of dates and events at an early phone use, driving without insurance, drink or s t a g e drug driving and dangerous driving. Some are can often prosecuted for much more serious offences pay real such as causing death by dangerous driving or dividends causing serious injury. Sometimes a relatively later on. minor offence can attract enough penalty Keep Your Licence points on a licence to bring about the risk of disqualification. David deals with all of these Need your driving licence to keep your job? and more and in this first article will describe A motoring conviction doesn’t have to mean a ban the way many prosecutions start.
Call me now for expert advice
For many drivers the first they know they may have committed a road traffic offence is the receipt in the post of a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a request for details of the driver. This is typical for speeding offences caught on camera, but it can apply to many others too. These documents are sent to the registered keeper. The first thing to check and to carefully note is the date upon which the NIP was actually received. Many people overlook this, but the law requires such Notices to be served within 14 days of the alleged offence and if that is not done there can be no prosecution. “Served” means received, not when it’s posted. The 14 day period is calculated by ignoring the date of the alleged offence and then counting forward 14 days. Sometimes they arrive out of time and if you don’t check and miss something,

Private Escort Care Service
Our Private Care Service carers can come to your house; help assist you with an outing in either your car or theirs. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
