Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, It’s October and it’s a big month for my son as he turns 18 on the 15th. His 18 years are forever etched on my memory, as they should be, so I feel it’s only fair to ensure that this transition into adulthood is firmly etched on his. Happy birthday Luke, whatever life throws at yyou stay positive, be kind, confident and maintain your sense of humour, you’ll need it when your friends see this...! If you would like to place a celebration message in the magazine please just drop me an email. It will be added free of charge to a new section of the What’s On page. Don’t miss the deadline though! The nights will start drawing in this month, especially once the clocks go BACK on Sunday

27th October, bringing British Summer Time to a close, at least we’ve had a good one this year though. As you’ll see from the front cover it’s time to get those chimneys swept (better to be safe than sorry!). An open fire at Christmas is a must in our house, it also allows the men in my family to pay tribute to the caveman within them. None of them can resist constantly checking and poking at it. Of course October is also the month for Halloween when freaky looking pumpkins keep any ghosts and ghouls away from our doors! Following that we have Bonfire Night. Check out this month’s magazine for a special offer on fireworks from Home Plus, they are also giving away free sparklers to all customers with no purchase necessary. Until next time have fun and stay safe. Have a great month ~ Debbie e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk T: 01233 720488

For thousands of years, ancient civilizations but they had problems with erosion so they

have used celestial bodies to measure the passage of time. The Sumerians tracked the movements of planets and stars to record the seasons, and even created ancient calendars to record lunar cycles. It is believed that around 4236 BC, the Egyptians discovered the `Dog Star` rising alongside the sun every 365 days, it is believed to be “one of the earliest years recorded in history” and would later evolve into the current 365-day calendar. 3500 BC Egyptians used giant obelisk shaped objects which projected shadows on the ground to track the 12 parts of the day we know them as sundials. The Greeks then invented water clocks

became unreliable. There was also a problem that during the winter as they would freeze up. So then along came sand clocks, we know them as an hour glass. The first modern mechanical clock was created some time between 500-1000 AD in Europe the exact date is unknown. It used weights that moved gears which in turn moved a single hour hand. These clocks were very large and require the weights to be reset 5 times a day. It wasn’t until centuries later that the next major hurdle in clock making was reached when the clocks driving weights were replaced with the invention of the coiled spring by Peter Henlein

w w w. f u l l y wo w o u n d. c o. u k this was around 1500. Then in 1504 he invented the first portable clock this odd looking egg shaped thing was made from iron and it only had an hour hand and no protective covering over the dial. The telling of time rapidly started to move on when in 1577 the invention of the minute hand was designed by a Danish astronomer. Then in 1600, Burgi was also responsible for the first clock featuring minutes and seconds as well. The next few centuries saw the evolution of pocket watches they became smaller, and more accurate and very ornately designed. In 1704 Facio came to London with an idea to use jewelled pivot bearings. His idea was that precious stones would not wear or erode like metal pivots would this is when the jewelled movement was invented and is still used today. Over the years watches got more and more accurate. Abraham-Louis Perrelet has the distinction of one of the biggest advancements in clockmaking when he designed the first self winding watch in 1770. The pocket watch was called the pedometer named after the source of its power a weighted lever that jerks as the person walked. While these many historic dates were important to the evolution of timekeeping it was April 19th 1891 that changed “time” as we know it today. Due to a malfunctioning conductors watch two trains collided near Cleveland, Ohio, Killing 11 people. News of this disaster quickly spread launching a demand for all railroads (and communities) to adopt a timekeeping standard. Suddenly the modern world developed a fascination with `accurate` time.

PLOT

Benefits of Garlic

As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesƟng, into clearing and Ɵdying. Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days. Jobs for October:-

6

Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in Ɵme for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire aƩached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweetsmelling black leaf mould in one to two years Ɵme.

October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starƟng to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look aŌer your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotaƟon is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add maƩer from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flaƩened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planƟng, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring.

If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the Ɵme to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anyƟme between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planƟng all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green Ɵps creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The tradiƟonal Ɵme for harvesƟng garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieƟes that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protecƟon with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starƟng ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planƟng next season.

Mowgli Hello everyone, Mowgli here. Hope you are all well and enjoying the slightly warmer weather! All is well here. Ebony and I are still enjoying exploring the new house (we got into the loft the other day. We thought it was GREAT and even Ebony was quite naughty about being extracted from the loft. Clive says he has aged 10 years from that experience. Humans are such fuss pots don’t you think?)

What unusual things and human food do all you cats out there like to eat? Ebony and I are very good and really don’t like human food with the very odd exception. Ebony (little Miss Perfect of course...) won’t eat any human food and I only like rocket. I often share Louis the tortoise’s rocket- yum! My love of rocket can lead to fun with guests. Clive and Jane often assure everyone that we are very good cats and won’t eat any of the lunch. This is my cue to leap onto the table, walk straight past all the meat and other things most cats apparently like, stick my head straight in the salad bowl and have a rummage for rocket. It goes down a storm every time and is quite the party trick! When I was a little kitten and came to live with Clive and Jane I came with a sheet of recommended foods. Those of you who know Clive know that he is quite a stickler about what he thinks pets should eat and when he read the sheet and saw that it was recommended that I liked to share the odd kebab and chips he had to be sat down and brought a gin and tonic. I have to admit I have never seen kebab and chips again but I am not sorry. Jane says that Ebony and I must be the only cats in the world that don’t eat steak or any other kind of meat. It is true- whenever we are given any we pat it around and post it under the

dresser. For some reason this is not popular and leads to Clive lying on the floor with a long wooden spoon trying to fish the meat out and Jane going on and on about rotting meat creating a smell. Humans are so very odd. I think our folks have it easy compared to Chris the vet. His two Bengal cats will eat absolutely anything. They say that sampling everything gives them a refined palate but I think they are a bit crazy. Recently they stole some meatballs and started carrying them around the house like toys and they have also been found with their heads in a saucepan of sprout soup lapping it up. Mad! Baby Joshua is continuing to do well and Ebony and I are liking having Jane home all the time. I have worked out that every few hours she sits on the sofa to feed Joshua and I like to join in and sit on her lap. Gets a bit crowded but it is very warm and snuggly! So every 3 hours in our house the baby starts crying because he is hungry and I start

The clinic had an inspection recently from the Vet Medicines Directorate and passed with flying colours. Josh went in with Jane for the inspection and slept through the whole thing in a papoose. Chilli Chicken Stew Serves 4

Serves 6 - 8

Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes

With Halloween at the end of the month, why not plan a ghostly gathering and serve up this hot and spicy chicken stew? Perfect for filling up hungry trick or treaters.

Ingredients: 14

• 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) • 6 large skinless chicken fillets, cut into pieces • 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 x 400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce • 1 red, 1 green and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Warm crusty bread, to serve

Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread.

Tip For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers.

Always here to help In the latest in our regular series of articles regarding legal matters, Katrina Kemp, Solicitor at Pengelly & Rylands, gives some advice on Wills, Powers of Attorney and selling your home. As we get older we tend to use solicitors more – perhaps to make a Will, to make plans for our future needs, in case we should become unable to deal with our affairs ourselves, or maybe to buy a property. At Pengelly & Rylands we can help with all of these issues. We understand that it is important that you feel confident with your solicitor. That you feel able to ask questions and speak to your solicitor on a one-to-one basis. We value good service and will deal with your matter professionally and with integrity, from your very first enquiry, and we will act, at all times, in your best interests.

16

We are always here to help you achieve the result you want. In order for us to do this we need to know what you are planning to do. Here are some examples of what you should consider before making your appointment with us: If you are thinking of writing a Will, you will need to consider who you want to act as your Executors, who you want to benefit from your Will and most importantly what you want your Will to achieve. You should consider, before you come to see us, what you want to happen with your house, possessions and finances. If you are not sure, we can always offer advice. If you are considering making a Lasting Power of Attorney, you should think very carefully about who will be your Attorney(s). You should consider if you want a replacement Attorney, to act if your Attorney(s) cannot act for you if the time comes. You will also need to choose someone “to be told” who is given the opportunity to raise any concerns or objections, if and when the Lasting Power of Attorney comes to be registered. A Certificate Provider will also need to be appointed, to confirm that you understand the significance of the Lasting Power of Attorney - perhaps your GP or a longstanding friend.

Katrina Kemp Solicitor

If you are considering selling your property, you should contact your solicitor early on. This will give you and your solicitor time to get the legal paperwork in order. You will need to find your title deeds, planning and/or building regulations approval documents, guarantees and surveys. You will need to arrange for an Energy Performance Certificate to be completed and you will need to complete the Property Information and Fittings and Contents forms. Again, we can help you with all of these things. Being prepared and organised can help us deal with your matter more efficiently. If you would like to discuss with us how we can help in preparing your Will, a Lasting Power of Attorney or your house sale or purchase, please call us on 01580 762248.

Laser Lipolysis What is it? Just recently I visited Wye Beauty to try out of one of their new treatments, Laser Lipolysis. Like so many of us, as time has marched on my body shape has changed and there are bits of it that are just too podgy for my liking. My stomach is my nemesis, no longer can I blame it on childbirth as I’ve now had 18 years to do something about it! In the past I’ve been embarrassed when asked if I’m expecting - that would take a miracle these days!

20

I know that given time and effort, exercise would probably sort this out but time is exactly the issue. With intensive work commitments alongside family life, I just never seem to have the time (that’s my excuse anyway), so when Robyn invited me to try this new treatment I jumped at the opportunity.

ability to store fat in the areas that have been targeted. This will prevent fat being stored in different parts such as around the heart or vital organs so is an important factor. Clients who maintain a healthy diet and a moderate exercise regime will retain the benefits of the Laser Lipo treatment and maintain their body shape. Laser Lipolysis or Laser Lipo (also known as Liposculpture) is a new, safe form of laser liposuction that can really change your body, almost instantly. A mild low laser, which penetrates the skin to a depth of approximately 9mm, is used to reduce your body’s fat. This is just deep enough to reach the subcutaneous fat layer. It is not cosmetic surgery, it’s noninvasive: there are no needles or injections. It’s painless and you don’t need to take any time off of work afterwards. Luscious Laser gives you the results of liposuction without the surgery.

2. 3. 4. 5.

How Does it Work?

The Laser Lipo emits low levels of laser energy and penetrates the skin, this makes the fat cells “sweat” water, glycerol and free fatty acids. The fat cell shrinks and the lymphatic system removes the fatty liquids through the body’s natural metabolic function and these are used by the body as an energy source. They are then processed in the same way as fatty foods are digested, the procedure gives a healthy and safe inch loss. The process does not affect the neighbouring structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. The treatment does not harm the body in any way as the fat cells are left intact, the body will still maintain its

6.

The targeted fatty areas are accurately measured and pre-treatment photographs taken. Up to eight large Diode Laser paddles are placed on the targeted fatty areas and secured with a Velcro belt. Two or four smaller Probe Lasers are placed over the appropriate lymphatic glands and held in place. The Laser Lipo will then be switched on for a treatment of up to a maximum of 40 minutes. The treated areas are then re-measured to assess the inch loss achieved and post-treatment photographs taken. On average one can expect to see a reduction of between 0.5 and 3 inches (1.25 – 8cm). In order to increase the body’s ability to remove the broken down fat cells, it is necessary to assist the natural process by increasing the metabolic rate. This can be achieved in a number of ways e.g. 30 minutes cardio vascular exercise such as brisk walking, running or the use of a vibration plate machine for about 10 minutes.

What Areas Can be Treated?

Stomach Hips (Love handles) or (Muffin Top)

health & beauty

Thighs Upper back fat / Lower back fat Arms (under biceps) or (Bingo Wings) Baby bulge Double Chins Above knee areas / Ankles Male breasts (Moobs) Following the treatment if you undertake some form of (preferably cardio vascular) exercise to raise your heart rate and therefore increase your metabolic rate, your body will use the fuel available in your bloodstream. This includes the fatty acids and triglycerides released by the Lipo Laser treatments. Once the “fuel” in the bloodstream has been used up your liver will begin to target the remaining fat deposits (starting with those most easily broken down – the treated areas) for further “fuel”. Therefore, the more exercise you undertake between treatments, the better your results will be. The treatment is completely painless, the paddles produce a warm sensation on your skin while you lay back and relax. My measurements were taken before and after the treatment, so that results could

be determined. I was then advised to follow the treatment with some aerobic exercise e.g a brisk 30 min walk, which I did with the dog. To achieve the best results it’s recommended that you have a course of 8 treatments, one per week, followed by a little exercise. After just one session my waist measurement had dropped by a couple of centimetres, but I should point out that results will vary from person to person and will largely depend upon your body makeup and the amount of fat being treated. We have a great range of quality and innovative security products to suit all budgets, offering both reactive and planned maintenance, plus handyman services if required. Tony, our qualified locksmith specialises in nondestructive entry where possible. This month we would like to showcase a TV featured, innovative product that has been warmly received by Police Forces & Neighbourhood Watch schemes up and down the Country.

Chain Reaction DNA CHAIN OF EVIDENCE - A new deterrent to combat burglary and doorstep crime.

26

StranDNA (UK) Limited assists in the chain of evidence required to secure convictions… Cutting edge forensic technology sprays a liquid that has its own unique code (DNA), if an intruder forcefully enters your property the canister sprays the intruder. Once sprayed the liquid will stain his or her clothes/skin/ footwear for a period of time, aiding the police to get an evidence based conviction. Each property’s canister is unique thus linking the intruder to the premises, which makes the safe conviction a reality. (It’s amazing science, check out our website www.southeastlocks.biz for more information) Definitive illegal action is required for the security device to activate and will respond by emitting a high decibel screech alarm simultaneously spraying the perpetrator. The alarm when started will sound and evacuate for approximately 3 minutes, any persons or

property that come into direct contact with this security device will be marked. The DNA liquid is a clear non-toxic, UV based substance only visible under ultra-violet light. UK Police forces have tools in place to identify this type of UV technology using UV lighting situated in numerous Police station custody suites, or by using hand held UV Black Lights. DNA-Trace. After a suspect is found to be stained with the chemical agent, a Forensic Science Service is able to examine and establish its unique DNA code. Each code is held in a secure installations database which records where the device was professionally installed and registered, by a StranDNA approved installer. Clearly, placing any stained individuals at the scene of a specific crime will inevitably add to the chain of evidence required to pursue a conviction in criminal courts and at the same time increase detection rates. We believe once this security device has become synonymous with a specific application, the installation of a sticker situated around the entrance, warning the premises are protected by StranDNA will be a strong deterrent to crimes taking place. There are more than 1 billion codes and NO two canisters are ever the same. Chain Reaction can only be purchased and installed through authorised agents.

wit & wisdom

Those Were The Days Close your eyes and go back in time, before the Internet or the Apple Mac, before Xbox or Playstation, way back. I’m talking about Hide and Seek in the park and the corner shop, then there’s: • Hopscotch, Butterscotch, Skipping, Handstands.

• When nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there.

• Football with an old can and climbing trees.

• When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.

• Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace. • Bazooka Joe bubble gum. • Watching Saturday morning cartoons.... • Short commercials, The Double Deckers, Road Runner, He-Man, Zeebedee. • Tiswas or Swapshop? Staying up for Doctor Who. • When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.

28

• Cops & Robbers, Cowboys & Indians, and Zorro. • Walking to school, no matter what the weather.

• When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed them or use them to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. • When being sent to the head’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc. Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! - And some of us are still afraid of them!! • “Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.

• Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.

• The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.

• Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.

• Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult.

• Water balloons were the ultimate weapon

• Nobody was prettier than Mum.

• Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Choppers and Grifters.

• Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

• Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.

• Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. • Two types of trainers - girls and boys, and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E. • It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends. • You didn’t sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.

• Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin. • Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true • Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors. If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.
