Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Welcome to the September Issue and the onset of a new season. Can you believe it, Christmas has been mentioned for the very first time and the sight of snow on one of my front covers this month reminds me that I must place my firewood order before they get too busy. At least we’ve had a much better summer this year and I hope there’s plenty more left before we have to consider turning on the central heating. As always in September, school is very much on the agenda, as you’ll see from this month’s content. School days in my family will soon be a distant memory as my “Petrol Head” son heads off to college to engross himself in vehicle technology and motor sport. I feel that I’m witnessing a metamorphosis, cuddly little boy turned into nocturnal, slightly grungy teenager, any time now an adult will appear before my very eyes. The transformation will be complete but he will never stop learning! September is the month to get yourself organised for the winter season, so get those boilers checked, order those logs and tackle any outdoor jobs while the weather permits. Have a great month ~ Debbie e: info@thevillagedirectory.co.uk w: www.thevillagedirectory.co.uk T: 01233 720488

the garden
Weed Attack by Pippa Greenwood Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multipronged attack strategy. Off with their Heads
4
Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.
Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run. Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming
tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.

the toys, however, belong to Josh. He seems content to share them although we were all a bit unhappy when he became obsessed with our cat toy box. He would crawl towards it every morning and tip all the toys out. Ebony and I launched a protest and the box has duly been moved to a shelf where we can still get to it. My favourite thing to do with toys is to bat them around a bit and then post them under the dresser. In our old house the dresser was in the carpeted dining room. In our new house it is in the kitchen that has a wooden floor. This is a lot better for skidding and handbrake turns and has made posting things under the dresser even more fun. Clive always moans at me a lot when he gets all the toys out from underneath the dresser. I don’t know why he moans because it is not as if he does this often. In fact, by the time he gets round to getting everything out I have usually completely forgotten what is underneath there myself. Clive and I lie on the floor together and he fishes around with a wooden spoon. I always get into trouble because I often bat the toys straight back under and he has to get them out again. Sometimes humans are just no fun! Once, rather thrillingly, there was a mummified shrew under the dresser (Clive had a few choice words to say about that) and often Clive exclaims happily at various objects I have posted under there that he thought were lost forever.
Mowgli Hello everyone, Mowgli here. Hope you are all well. Ebony and I are fine and enjoying watching the birds (and blooming Saska the squirrel) from the window- many thanks to everyone who suggested brands of squirrel proof bird feeder! As well as keeping a close eye out of the window Ebony and I have been playing with a lot of new toys. Some of these are legitimately ours as it was Ebony’s birthday at the beginning of August. The silly old goats aren’t very good at playing with toys. They tend to just eat them. In fact, whenever they get their Christmas presents they even eat the wrappings. The goats have, however, got a new friend. A small wood mouse has decided to join them and it runs to the door with both goats when Clive goes to feed them each night. We aren’t sure how the little mouse doesn’t get trampled but he has been there for quite a few weeks now.

At the clinic there is a bit of a change as Chris will be leaving mid-September to go and do a PhD about rhinos! We are all a bit sad about this but he might still work some weekends for us so we will still hear his news. A new vet called Roland is starting and he sounds really nice. We haven’t met him ourselves yet but he sounds great. Clive and Jane did a lot of interviews so we are happy that he is the right vet. We’ll give our own feedback as to how he is with us cats when we meet him! Roland has a big dog- a Munsterlander- so we’ll find out about the dog too and report back!

Mediterranean Fish Bake Serves 4
Ready in 50 minutes This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices.
Ingredients: 12
• 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) • 350g small new potatoes, halved • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 225g small plum tomatoes, halved • 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) • 50g butter, softened • Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Tip Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.
Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes. Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Reviewing The Situation…. When the dust settled following the London Olympics, when the British Lions dispersed to their native lands following their triumph in Australia and when Spring Grove pupils left the school to start their Summer Holidays, it was time to review the missions accomplished. To provide the fairest assessment one must measure the achievements against the targets set. As soon as London was awarded the Olympics back in 2005, the powers that be set out to finish 4th in the medals table: in 2012, Team GB finished 3rd behind USA and China. Success. The Lions team that thrilled the home nations 2 weeks ago surely achieved their goal. The Spring Grove Mission statement sets out our aim: “we will develop all who join Spring Grove to their full potential - academically, socially, physically and emotionally in a supportive, caring and friendly community. Within a beautiful rural setting our school is small enough for us to know every child and their family and encourage them to support the school motto of ‘Always Do Your Best’”. Measured against this, have we achieved success? This year we have enjoyed the academic, sporting, artistic, dramatic and musical achievements of our pupils; we have received resounding praise from visitors and members of the Wye community with whom our children come into contact; we have relished the opportunities to be involved in charitable work; above all, we see all of our children thoroughly enjoying their education and I see clear evidence that those who are about to move onto their next schools develop a real love of learning.
We cannot promise success all of the time, however. There are blips on the way; some children experience difficulties with friendships, some struggle with aspects of work, some never seem to get their chances to shine. There are problems to work through but we promise to take the time to solve them. Likewise, Team GB and the Lions did not achieve their triumph without mishap. Solving the problems and winning through against tribulation can make us more resilient and I believe that those children who have experienced the ‘blips’ this year may well be better and stronger for the experience. T Twelve months ago, a number of like-minded broadcasters and business personnel pooled their knowledge and resources to create a dedicated internet, community radio station which they named Channel Radio. The station is based at Haguelands Village, Burmarsh, Dymchurch, Kent and broadcasts an eclectic mix of chat and music, much of which is related to the Romney Marsh and surrounding area. One of their flag ship programmes is ‘Marsh Mellow’ which has now been on the air for over 7 months and is slowly, but surely, attracting a devoted audience, interested in all aspects of Romney Marsh
has an idea which they think would entertain the listeners . Whatever you have to say email clivelooker@channelradio.co.uk he just can’t wait to interview you. Channel Radio is a dedicated internet station. You can receive channel radio on ipods, ipads, iphones, smartphones, pcs, tablets, laptops and internet radios. Listen to Marsh Mellow live every Thursday between 4 & 5pm or go to www. channelradio.co.uk/listen-again-Thursday. Each programme is available for the following 7 days after broadcast. You can download the Channel Radio app from itunes or androidappstore
Clive Looker is the prime mover of this show, being the researcher, producer and presenter, so the programme succeeds or fails on his efforts alone. The show is peppered with music, and interviews with a little humour thrown in for good measure. Clive is always looking for something new and different to tempt his listeners’ aural palette, and would like to hear from anyone in the Romney Marsh and surrounding area, involved in raising money for charity, or anyone who has an unusual hobby or weird pet, is a budding, artist, musician or author, has won an award or competition, or simply

the home Ten ways to create a new room in your house Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home. Convert a loft space into an extra bedroom. Hammonds Furniture (0800 021 4360; www.hammonds-uk.com)
1. Build an extension Pros Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the 28 first floor, too. Cons Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. Regulations Can often be done without planning permission, depending on size and height. Check your permitted development rights with your local council’s planning department. You’ll also need building regulations approval and, if you’re semi-detached or in a terrace, party wall consent from neighbours. Visit www. planningportal.gov.uk for more information. 2. Convert the loft Pros Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden. Cons Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t
traditionally built. Regulations As for extensions. 3. Convert the cellar Pros Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home. Cons Often more expensive, per square metre, than other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to get enough headroom and light into the new room. Regulations If you just want to turn an existing cellar into a normal room, it’s classed as a change of use and doesn’t need planning permission. But if you lower the floor or extend, you’re likely to need permission, so check with your local authority. And you’ll need party wall consent from any adjoining neighbours. In both cases you must comply with Building Regulations. 4. Add a conservatory Pros Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter
By Katherine Sorrell and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. Regulations Many conservatories are exempt from planning permission and building regulations, but check with your local planning department first. 5. Build a room in the garden Pros The building work will hardly bother you. Cons Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. Regulations A simple garden room may be exempt from planning permission and Building Regulations, but if it’s laid on permanent foundations and connected to mains power, water and sewerage, you’ll need both. 6. Divide a room into two Pros Carving up a large space to add another room is useful and can add value, even though you’re not actually creating any extra space. Cons You’ll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window.
Regulations Planning permission is not usually needed, but Building Regulations apply to new walls, doors, windows and electrical work. 7. Put in an ensuite Pros Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space. Cons Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value. Regulations Planning permission isn’t usually needed, but Building Regulations approval is. 8. Build on top of your garage Pros A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy. Cons Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned. Regulations You’ll need planning permission and

premium. Regulations Planning permission is not usually required, but Building Regulations approval is.
Building Regulations. 9. Convert your understairs space Pros Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons You’ll have to find extra space to store that understairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. Regulations Building Regulations approval is necessary if you’re installing a bathroom. 10. Convert your garage Pros It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a

wit & wisdom
Divine Email Blunder A couple decided to go to Australia for their annual holiday. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules, so the husband left home and flew to Australia on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. On arrival in Australia the husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife, however, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address and without realising his error, sent the email. Meanwhile somewhere in England a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack.
The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor and saw the computer screen which read: To: My Loving Wife Subject: I’ve Arrived Date: June 16, 2013 I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. P.S. Sure is hot down here!
