Welcome to the village directory Hi Everyone, Welcome to the September Issue, by the time you read this the Olympics will be well and truly over, but as I write I’m still reeling from the amazing closing ceremony on television last night. Although constantly tidying up after my teenage son can feel like a marathon at times, I’m not really into sport in a big way, but I must say I really caught the Olympics bug and for the first time watched with excitement and immense pride. Leading up to the games I didn’t think I would watch much of it but once we were introduced to some of the athletes, and we started doing so well, I was riveted to my screen every night. It was wonderful to have a whole two weeks of uplifting successes, not just from our sports men and women but also from the tremendous British fans and helpers. I think we showed the whole world the very professional, talented and fun side of us Brits.
Although it did seem rather London centred at times I think the whole country can be proud of how this Olympics came together. Well done Team GB. Now it’s up to all of us to to maintain this very positive, uplifting vibe. The athletes have shown us how hard work and a positive mental attitude is the key to success. Have a great month!

The Garden Shed September By Jo Arnell

ust Is it my imagination or is this part of the season getting longer? The stretch from late summer to the end of October can be nearly as hot (and usually drier) than it is in July and August. Colours are muted and warm and autumn is creeping in at the edges of the day, but not in a bad way; it gives me a “seize the day” feeling, in case this is the last time we’ll see the sun. I’m more relaxed in the garden at this time of the year - the pressure’s off in terms of hoping for perfection now that the summer’s drifting away; the weeds aren’t quite so rampant and although some things are fading, others are still in their prime - a few even, are just beginning.
M
any grasses are in their prime now, with golden, silver or russety flower spikes - some demure and ‘grassy’, others with dramatic plumes or ‘feathers’ of flowers. The sun is lower in the sky than in summer, so use this slanting light to good effect by
placing grasses in front of the sun so that they’re backlit. The flower and seed heads last for a long time and give movement, texture and drama to a border. Grasses look fantastic planted with late summer perennials - try clumps of ‘daisy’ flowers like Echinacea, Rudbeckia, or drifts of Verbena bonariensis and Gauara lindheimerii.
G
rasses are very easy to grow and look after. They tend to clump up a little (some Miscanthus gets a bit thuggish), but are easily divided in either autumn or spring. The only thing you really need to do is cut them back (to the ground) in early spring before the new growth starts.
Five good grasses to grow: Miscanthus zebrinus - this tall grass has horizontally striped leaves (not quite like a Zebra though) and attractive dusky flower plumes/seed heads that persist for a long time. Stipa tenuissima - a shorter grass that helps to give movement and texture within the border. It works well contrasted with dumpy clumps of Sedums and Asters or mingled in with

the garden that they had eaten a lot of the linen to make some nests. So everything had to come out, be sorted through and lots of chewed material floated around like confetti. Everything smelt deliciously of mice. Ebony and I were in heaven! For some reason Jane and Clive were not pleased and even sat us down and told us that we were not doing our jobs properly by letting mice live in the cupboard! Humans are so stupid- we are not allowed in the linen cupboard (we would only be too happy to curl up in there but apparently there is a problem with muddy paws) so how could we scare the Hello Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. I hope you mice away? are all well and enjoying the summer. We have been enjoying the sunny spells although we After everything had been taken out of the cupboard we had a bit of a play around in have had a lot of trouble with our cottage! there and we saw lots of copper pipes. They It all started with Jane deciding to tidy out were very old looking and crusted with large the linen cupboard (why do humans do these bits of lime scale. Unfortunately one of them things? They don’t know how to relax as well got slightly knocked when everything went as us cats!). We thought this would be quite back in the cupboard and a large chunk of lime fun- tunnelling under the sheets and blankets scale fell off and water started pouring out of as they came out- but it was a lot more fun the pipe. The lime scale had obviously been than we thought..... Jane discovered that mice acting as some sort of plug! So various buckets had been living in the linen cupboard and were collected to catch the water but despite this water was soon pouring through the kitchen ceiling (sitting on the cooker playing with that was fun) and an emergency plumber had to be called.

This was all sorted and the mess cleaned up. Ebony and I were exhausted by all the help we had to give and the next day settled down to a well earned rest while the humans were at work. Not for long though as soon there was an almighty crash and the ceiling in the sitting room fell down (nothing to do with the water in the kitchen apparently, just a separate disaster). We went to investigate and found that lots of the ceiling had landed in Louis the tortoise’s pen and he was buried in the rubble! We helped him burrow through and he sat with his head poking out of the rubble for the rest of the day until Clive and Jane came home. We checked on him frequently and made sure he didn’t eat the plaster- that tortoise will eat anything. At least he has a good hard shell to protect him. Anyway, the humans were horrified when they arrived and Louis had a thorough examination and was found to be OK. We even got thanked for looking after him. Then we all cleaned up the ceiling..... We think the cottage has turned against us for
some reason- maybe we have a poltergeist?! Let’s hope we can report peace and quiet next month! On another note, thank you to Charlie the cat who wrote in with tales of how he helps his humans with their washing. His humans seem to be unappreciative and even put a mouse he had caught in the washing machine with their clothes. Apparently it made all their clothes STINK!

Life Begins Don’t let your dream cottage turn into a nightmare It’s the stuff of Daily Mail competitions. It’s the fantasy that drives the holiday cottage industry: when once a year we satisfy our desire for rural living by renting our own dream cottage. But what happens when – like newly retired couple Gary and Linda Speed from Basingstoke - you decide to live the dream? Gary and Linda wanted to buy a spacious, detached cottage in the West Country with offstreet parking, original features and countryside views. Having around ÂŁ300,000 in the bank, they were conďŹ dent that they would ďŹ nd their perfect home. However, they were initially dismayed to ďŹ nd that while house prices may have slumped in recent years, the market for period properties in popular areas remains surprisingly buoyant. The couple eventually found a reasonably-priced cottage that ticked all the right boxes. Located in a quiet village outside a popular Dorset tourist town, the attractive stone-built, thatched property had no central heating and lacked a modern kitchen and bathroom, but it did have a large garden all the period features they wanted. “We knew that it needed updating,â€? says Linda. “But it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t understand why someone else hadn’t already snapped it up.â€? However, as the various surveys and building reports they had commissioned began to pile up, the true cost of the renovation was revealed. The stonework needed re-pointing, the electrical wiring had decayed and the damaged thatch would cost thousands to replace, so Gary and Linda reluctantly pulled out. They had incurred costs along the way – solicitors’ fees plus the cost of the surveys and reports – but they had avoided the nightmare of a ‘money pit’ purchase by taking professional advice early on. If Gary and Linda’s dreams didn’t match up to reality, they were not alone. In a recent survey by AA Home Emergency Response, 2,005 people were questioned about their ideal home. 28% of respondents fantasised about owning a property
the home
in a rural location, with a large, openplan kitchen/diner and living area featuring high on their ‘must-have’ list. 48% of the sample wanted sea views while slightly more than half prioritised views of mountains or open ďŹ elds. As anyone familiar with the British countryside will know, rather than enjoying expansive views, many village dwellings face directly onto a busy road. A large kitchen/diner is also a rare ďŹ nd – particularly if the cottage is Grade II listed and the local authority does not permit structural alterations. In fact the competition for properties that ‘have it all’ is so intense that in sought-after areas you will need to spend ÂŁ500,000 plus if you want a property with good internal space that enjoys excellent countryside or seaside views. Buyers on a more modest budget will inevitably have to compromise.
up their dream of a West Country home, but during a weekend trip to Somerset a ‘For Sale’ sign caught their eye.
Their ďŹ nal purchase was a small, terraced town house that faced directly onto the street - a far cry from the ‘roses round the door’ cottage with a large garden they had originally envisaged. As Linda explains: “We knew we had to compromise on our dream, but in the end it didn’t After their experience in Dorset, Gary really feel like a compromise. It was different, but we and Linda seriously considered giving loved the village and somehow the chemistry was right.â€?

Forward thinking kitchen design for later years 18
As we enjoy healthier lives for longer we need to forward plan, investing in our homes to make them much easier for use in older age.
into sharp edges. They help to soften the room and are a stylish design feature to end a run of cabinets.
The kitchen area is a prime example of where you can have quality, design-led solutions that not only make it useable for you today but can still be used as you grow older with no compromise on style.
Make things easier on your lower extremities by moving your appliances off the floor. A range cooker may look lovely but it becomes a pain when you have to keep bending down to use it, not to mention high maintenance to clean. High line ovens & fridges at waist level mean easy access & less bending.
At J M Interiors we’re highly experienced at planning kitchens with this objective in mind and find following these design tips really do help to keep kitchens smart, functional and above all easy to use & maintain.
Keep everything within reach Base cupboards and low level shelving mean lots of bending and reaching. Opt instead for drawers; they more than double your storage space as well as making everything well organised and easy to access. Increase your storage capacity by incorporating accessible corner solutions such as magic corners, carousels, swingouts and rotating trays. Their ergonomic design means smooth operations and safe storing of all your kitchen items.
Soften harsh edges Think about incorporating curved cupboards and surfaces to prevent knocks
Remove things from the floor
Make it easy to clean & maintain There are a couple of must have features to help you cut down on cleaning time in your kitchen; •
Keep cabinetry unfussy, free from excessive detail for clean lines and smooth surfaces.
•
Granite or composite stone worktops are practical, durable & the easiest of surfaces to clean.
•
Induction hobs are a wonder – so easy to use and only need a quick wipe over.
•
Pyrolitic ovens have a fully automatic selfcleaning function, which at a touch of a button removes all food residues with no unpleasant odours or chemical cleaning agents.

My earliest Olympic memories include golden performances from David Hemery in 1968, Mary Peters in 1972 and David Wilkie in 1976 – events I saw as an impressionable school boy. Those were also the days when Team GB found gold medals all but elusive. We were used to the Brits somehow falling at the final hurdle and despite our plucky efforts we would tend to lose out to the more professional, better prepared (and sometimes illegally-fuelled) continental teams. What a contrast to Beijing and now London 2012! The preparation of our cycling team has stunned the world – at its heart lies its attention to detail, its production of youthful, exuberant, awesomely talented athletes who compete expecting to win and yet are equally capable of showing graciousness on the few occasions when they taste defeat. Today’s children have any number of our own home-grown sporting heroes from whom they can draw inspiration: Ennis, Farah, Ainslie, Wiggins, Pendleton…! Maybe they will be able to remember where they were on that glorious Super Saturday when GB won 6 golds including 3 of them in the space of 90 minutes. However, what will they be able to do with that inspiration? These children must have opportunities to play, to perform and experience different sports. They must be allowed and encouraged to enjoy competition. They must be taught how to win and lose. They must be given
pic Legacy the chance to develop skills, experience the social and educational benefits of teamwork and be given goals to chase. This is the subject of much debate alongside the Olympics and Lord Moynihan, Chairman of the BOA, has raised the issue that inspiration must lead to participation if there is to be a lasting Olympic legacy. Increased funding to grassroots clubs will undoubtedly help but what is required is for teachers in schools to recognise the value of children’s participation in sport (and the benefit it has on their whole education) and a willingness to include every child. At Spring Grove, we have extensive playing fields; we also have skilled and enthusiastic teachers who encourage every child to participate. The children themselves have access to sport every day and find themselves included in team sports and personal physical development programmes. It is no surprise then that the school has produced National Prep School cross-country champions and talented athletes who make a significant contribution to numerous local sports clubs. If our young children need any further inspiration then they can consider that a similar small prep school in Lincolnshire has produced two of our recent Olympic stars. Boost your child’s confidence and unlock their learning potential As we look to the start of a new school year, it’s time to think about how you can support your child’s learning. At your local study centre, Kumon can help your child to excel in maths and English by offering individualised study programmes which build their confidence and allow them to develop self-learning skills. The study programmes are tailored to all ages and abilities.

We all know the importance of maths and English. At the start of a new term it’s especially important that your child gets to grips with these core subjects and with the learning skills vital for academic progression. Kumon’s unique method of learning focuses on your child’s individual needs, providing them with skills such as concentration and time management and ensuring they progress at their own pace.
23
Once enrolled on a Kumon programme, your child will visit the centre every week and have daily worksheets to complete at home. At the centre, the Instructor will monitor their progress, setting new work and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning.

business HAVE YOU GOT YOUR WILL AND ESTATE PLANNING IN ORDER? In another of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson, from Tenterden Solicitors Pengelly & Rylands, explains the importance of making a Will and putting your Estate in order. Did you know, 7 out of 10 of us do not have a Will, although dying without one could cause upset for loved ones. If you die without a Will, your Estate may not pass to those you intend and the Intestacy laws apply. Under these laws, only married or civil partners will benefit. No one has a right to inherit if they are just cohabiting but are not married or civil partners. There is a misconception by many people that if you live with someone, you automatically get something if that person dies. If there is no Will the cohabitee would have to bring a claim against their partner’s Estate, which you can only do if you have lived with them for at least two years. Such a claim can be time consuming, costly and ultimately may not be successful.
24
Couples who are not married do not have the same exemption that applies to married couples or civil partners to pass any amount of money or assets to one another without having to pay Inheritance Tax. If you are married and have not made a Will, your Estate will not be given automatically to your spouse. They will take the first £250,000 of your Estate outright. The balance will be split into two parts; one part will pass outright to any children you have, equally, at 18 and the other part will be held on a life interest trust for your spouse, following which it will pass to your children outright. If you have no children but you have parents or brothers and sisters living, then your spouse will take £450,000 of your Estate outright, but the balance will again be split into two parts; one part will pass to your spouse outright, the other to your parents and failing that to your siblings outright. A further complication of dying without a Will is that an administrator must be appointed by the Court to distribute the Estate, rather than the Executor that you would have chosen, had you had a Will. An administrator is usually a close family member who is eligible to inherit and they must apply for a Grant of Letters of Administration. If more than one person wants to administer the Estate, the application can be contested, making the process even more drawn out and painful.
Rosalind Johnson – Senior Partner There are also many financial benefits from having a Will in place, the laws of Intestacy take no account of the type of assets you own and their tax treatment, which can lead to unnecessary tax bills. By way of an example, specific business assets or shares in a family business can pass under the terms of your Will to the next generation, free of Inheritance Tax if they qualify for Business Property Relief. If you would like to discuss your circumstances and make a Will, please contact either Rosalind Johnson or Gill Snow at Pengelly & Rylands on 01580 762248 and we will be very pleased to discuss your situation with you.

Seasonal Delights This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.
28
Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Lamb and Aubergine Curry
Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil.
• 3 tbsp sunflower oil
Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.
• 400g sieved tomatoes
Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.
Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes
• 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve
TIP
You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Naturally Beautiful Home vs High Street
We all love to try the latest beauty products and if you believe what you read on the packaging, you’ll wonder how you’ve ever lived without them. There’s no doubt there are some great products out there that go a long way in making our hair shiny, keeping our skin moisturised and fighting off lines and wrinkles, and there’s certainly no doubt that we fork out a lot of money for them.
32
If you venture away from the High Street and look for a more ‘homemade’ approach to beauty, you’ll find cheap and surprisingly effective natural solutions that don’t rely on fancy packaging and big promises. Instead, they inspire you to start reaching into your kitchen cupboard rather than your bathroom cabinet whenever you fancy a beauty treat. There’s no need to give up on your favourite products, but trying out some homemade hair, skin and body treats from time to time can leave you looking and feeling great and help with the budget too. Because they’re all created with completely natural ingredients, homemade face-masks, scrubs and treatments make use of what nature has to offer and what’s more, they smell good enough to eat. Fresh Faced - Peach and Honey Facemask Reap the rewards of this totally nourishing and revitalising natural face-mask that smells good enough to eat.
You’ll need:
1 peach 3 teaspoons of honey 2 tablespoons of natural yoghurt
It’s really easy to create the mask, simply skin the peach and mash the flesh with the honey and add the natural yoghurt. Work the ingredients in to a smooth paste and apply to a cleansed face and neck. Sit back and relax for 10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Your skin should be left feeling soft, supple and nourished.
Luscious Locks - The Natural Way Thanks to its natural conditioning and moisturising properties, coconut oil is the perfect treat for damaged hair. It has a soothing and softening effect on both the scalp and lengths of hair.
You’ll need a cup of coconut oil Massage the oil into the hair, paying particular attention to damaged lengths and ends. Apply sparingly to the scalp - or not at all if your hair is in fairly good condition. Wrap the hair in clingfilm and cover with a warm towel for maximum conditioning benefit - the heat opens the hair shaft and allows the oil to penetrate. Wash out with shampoo and condition as normal.
