Welcome Hi everyone, Welcome to September, a busy month of new beginings. The begining of the autumn season and the begining of a new accademic year. Children are returning to school following the summer break, they might not be too pleased but as a parent the routine is appreciated. The arrival of September has made me realise that there is precious little time left to finish off our outdoor tasks. We still have work to do to prepare for winter, we sprung a leak in our chimney breast last winter resulting in a significant amount of water pouring into the fireplace in the midst of one of last winter’s storms. This was caused by the breakdown of some pointing, so we need the fine weather to hold so that we can fix it. Unfortunately some wasps have decided to nest there now and my husband is extremely allergic to wasp stings this looks like a job for a Pest Controller - for the wasps, not my husband!

Our cars also need work completed before any bad weather sets in, the list is endless! At least my petrol head son is now able to show what he’s made of, having spent most of August covered in grease, with his head under the bonnet of my car. The work he’s carried out would have cost me a fortune but there’s always a catch - in return I have agreed to add him to my insurance!
We run a mediation service where we help people to resolve their disputes by supplying independant professionally trained mediators to facilitate an agreement. We are looking for trustees to help the charity to achieve its goal, in this difficult financial climate. Credit Crunch Gardening by Pippa Greenwood

• Apply for an allotment. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. • Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don’t feel embarrassed to ask, friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. • Collect softish, deciduous leaves to make free soil improver. Just make a ‘cage’ from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners and puncture a few holes. • Make the most of every bit of fruit and veg that your garden or allotment produces. Make jams, chutnies, jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else. • Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil. • Many local councils offer really good value composters and

compost bins. Better still, if you’re at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards. Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds – some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. Ask your local pub to give you any stale beer from the driptrays and use it as slug bait. Use an old plastic beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and don’t forget the old favourites such as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into bramble jelly. Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, which can be used as miniature seed trays, and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid. Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. Right now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and
sowing seed. • Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they’ll last years longer. • Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you ‘posh’ fruit....for just pennies. • The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it’s what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.

ISA Changes Chancellor George Osborne sprung a welcome surprise on investors and savers in his Budget in March, with the most far-reaching changes to the tax-free Individual Savings Accounts (ISA) since its launch in 1999. From 1 July, the ISA annual allowance was raised to £15,000 and the previous restrictions on cash holdings within the tax-free wrapper were lifted. From the start of July, the old limit on the amount of cash that could be deposited in an ISA each year – which in April was £5,940 – has been scrapped, and the new limit of £15,000 applies to both cash and stocks and shares holdings. Essentially, ISA savings can now be held in any combination of stocks and shares or cash that an individual wishes, offering choice and flexibility to build a portfolio and to reflect people’s differing, and changing, appetites for risk. Although new subscriptions from the beginning of July can be split in any proportion between Cash and Stocks & Shares ISAs, individuals will still only be able to pay into a maximum of one Cash ISA and one Stocks & Shares ISA each year.
8
Alongside the changes to UK pensions from April 2015, the new ISA rules broaden the planning opportunities available for Britain’s savers and investors. The coalition government has reinforced flexibility and choice for ISA investors and savers; although the giveaway comes at little initial cost to the Treasury in the run up to the 2015 general election, as the parlous returns from Cash ISAs mean the tax savings are marginal. Cleverly, longsuffering cash savers have been appeased without, for now, the prospect of any real gain as interest rates linger at sub-inflation levels. The July changes will give many a welcome opportunity to top up their taxadvantaged investments, or reconsider how they put aside money for the creation of long-term wealth. Remember that the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs is subject to changes in legislation and many not be maintained in future. To receive a complimentary guide covering Wealth Management, Retirement Planning or Inheritance Tax Planning, produced by St. James’s Place Wealth Management, contact Jamie Weller of St. James’s Place Wealth Management on 07790 690141 or 01233 222721 email jamie.weller@sjpp.co.uk
The government believes the rise in the allowance Talk of estate planning is not the cheeriest of subjects and its decision to scrap the cash limits will make the and it is easy to put something off that doesn’t affect system neater and less confusing. you today, or even in the near future. But it is a vital Since the Budget announcement, public attention has part of financial planning and once dealt with you can focused on the increase in the amount of cash that can rest easy that the loved ones you leave behind will be be held in an ISA. However, as Britain’s long-suffering looked after. savers are well aware, cash deposits have offered dire returns over the five years that the Bank of England has JAMIE WELLER held the base rate at 0.5%. Although Mark Carney, the WEALTH MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT Bank’s governor, indicated at his recent Mansion House speech that rate rises could happen “sooner than markets expect” – which, for now, has been broadly translated to Mastermind your financial future mean this year rather than next – he has emphasised that any increases will be “gradual and limited”. I provide an experienced wealth The reality of a slow and incremental increase in the base rate is that returns from cash deposits are likely to remain negligible. Furthermore, the present level of returns on the majority of cash savings is not sufficient to protect their value from inflation. Barely half of the Cash ISAs on the market currently achieve this goal (source: Moneyfacts – June 2014). However, the new flexibility to hold cash has effectively re-fitted the Stocks & Shares ISA into an even more versatile investment vehicle, providing individuals with a safer haven to ease concerns about short-term market volatility. Certainly, the previous restriction on the ability to shift money out of investments and into cash was a disincentive to lock into the potentially higher long-term returns offered by the stocks and shares element of ISAs. But savers who shied away from Stocks & Shares ISAs can now take advantage of exposure to stock market returns, and the potential to maximise the long-term benefits of the allowance by utilising all of the tax reliefs on offer, in the knowledge they have the freedom to transfer at any point.

Funny Girls Barbara Streisand may have been the ‘Funny Girl’ of the silver screen, but some of these ladies have been making audiences laugh their Bridget Jones-style big pants off for years. We’ve put together a selection of books by funny women, for funny women, or just women in general…or men who want to talk about problems with hair in unwanted places, and how to walk in high heels.
10
Bonkers: My Life in Laughs Jennifer Saunders We couldn’t talk about Dawn French and then not include Jennifer Saunders’ memoir, Bonkers. A selfconfessed procrastinator, Saunders seems to be under the impression it’s a bit of a miracle she’s achieved anything. There’s never been a life plan she says, more a sort of stumbling from one thing to the next, but it seems to be working for her. The book follows her haphazard working life alongside fellow ‘bluffer’ French and is full of their adventures together as well as those had whilst working on her own series such as Absolutely Fabulous. Then of course, there is her battle with cancer; again, not something she had planned for. She doesn’t shy away from talking about the tough times and it seems that laughter really could be the best medicine. How to be a Woman Caitlin Moran Moran’s definitive guide to being female will tell every Miss, Mrs and Ms everything we’re supposed to be doing as we totter through life in toe-crushing heels , as well as raising all the questions we’re not supposed to ask, such as ‘do we really need to wax?’ and ‘should a sense of broodiness be
in-built?’ It’s a laugh out loud book that will make you feel better about your old lady chin whiskers and your inability to get on a trampoline post kids. Billed as being ‘part memoir, part rant’ this is a laugh-out-loudfunny book that will reassure the ‘fairer sex’ and educate the male population, provided the blokes can get past the chapters on puberty. Bossypants - Tina Fey Hollywood star Tina Fey has a unique ability to make us feel like she could be our best friend. In fact, she wouldn’t look out of place sat at your kitchen table, looking frazzled, glass of white wine in hand, telling you about her adventures into planning her daughter’s Peter Panthemed birthday party. Bossypants follows Tina’s rise to fame from jobbing stand-up comic, to writing sketches for Saturday Night Live. The woman whose Sarah Palin impersonation is more well- known than, well, Sarah Palin is funny, often painfully candid and incredibly self-deprecating, and you can’t help but love her for that. She gives the impression of being a woman on the edge; juggling an amazing career with her family life, and dropping a few balls along the way.
Dear Fatty - Dawn French National treasure Dawn French has had an amazing career as a funny girl and this memoir is written as a series of letters to people who have influenced her life. Dear Fatty is a fantastic blend of honesty, poignancy and controversy, just like the comedy actress herself. As one half of the nation’s best-loved female comedy duo,
French and Saunders, she and her partner in crime redefined the roles of women in entertainment. With their sideways look at life that started with performances in Comic Strip they’ve sent up pretty much everyone in their hugely successful TV series. French tackles everything, from her career to her father’s death, and not forgetting a nation’s obsession with her size. A brilliant read.

Cake and Bake Dutch Apple Pie The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of self-raising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples ples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery. 14
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •
200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve
TIP Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.
Serves 8
1. To make the pastry, sift the plain and self- raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

See you Sunday 7th September for Ashford’s Farmers’ Market From sweet and savoury artisan delights to Local fruit juices, ciders, beers and fine wines, there’s something for all tastes at the September Farmers’ Market! The market is already established as a popular fixture on the first Sunday of each month. Offering a wide variety of locally made and sourced produce its return to the lower High Street on Sunday 7th September between 10am and 2pm is a welcome sight for everyone’s eyes – foodies or not. There’ll be cooking demonstrations, street food stalls, as well as local music from acoustic performers Ritchie and Rhonda, a ‘Funk Soul’ duo. On the very top part of the Lower High Street there will be dancing from Maenads, The Wild Women of Kent, showcasing the spirit of the county in every aspect. The market manager Rachel Heather said: “This truly is a market to be proud of capturing the atmosphere of everything Kentish.” The market, which launched in July with 12 stalls, now has well over 20 confirmed stalls, with more set to follow. Whether you’re looking for bread, cheese, meat, fresh herbs, good old fruit and veg and even handmade sweet treats you won’t be disappointed! essentiallyhops Decorative Hop Garlands are the most beautiful natural garlands, picked fresh from the field at the end of August and hung in the home where they dry naturally to give all year round decoration. Ideal over fireplaces and agas, or on beams, over doorways, windows or on dressers, the traditional Kentish hop garland is highly sought after and now not as widely available as they used to be. Tractors run up and down from the hop gardens every day during the hop harvest to bring the freshly picked hops to the shop for customers to choose from. The hop harvest starts around 20th august until 15th September but you can buy the dried garlands all year round.

MEET TINKABOO A STAR IN THE MAKING Written by Willamina-the-Wise-Wordsmith Doo-BDoodle t o w n w a s a-buzz with excitement. Tinkaboo had been chosen to appear in a TV show. At Dolly’s little cottage, the photographer from the local newspaper, Doo-B-Doodle Town’s Some-Times, was about to arrive for Tinkaboo’s photoshoot. But Dolly couldn’t find her puppy anywhere. “Tinkaboo! Where are you?” she called. “Getting ready!” barked Tinkaboo. Dolly skipped upstairs and smiled when she saw the big sign on the bedroom door. FUR AND MAKE-UP But there was something else. Tinkaboo had made a door hanger and hung it on the handle. On it were the words TEA PLEASE. “Well, what a cheek!” Dolly mumbled. And she called through the door… “Tinkaboo Listen to you! Who doo-b-doo you think you are?!” But she still went to make him a cup of tea. “Here it is, Tinkaboo.” And Dolly set the tray down on the floor outside the bedroom. Then she looked up to see that the words on the door hanger now read BISCUITS PLEASE. Dolly folded her arms with a sigh. “Tinkaboo Listen to you! Who doo-b-doo you think you are?!” But she still went to fetch him his favourite Squiggly-Swisskits. “Here you are, Tinkaboo.”
And as Dolly set the plate down on the floor outside the bedroom door she noticed that the tea tray had disappeared. She also noticed that the words on the hanger had changed again. It now read NAIL CLIPPERS PLEASE. Dolly’s eyes flashed. “Tinkaboo Listen to you! Who doo-b-doo you think you are?!” But she still went to find the nail clippers. “Here you are, Tinkaboo.” Dolly popped the nail clippers down on the carpet, noticing that the plate of biscuits had disappeared. Then she looked up and couldn’t believe her eyes. The words on the hanger now read FUR BRUSH PLEASE. Dolly pursed her lips. But she still went to look for his fur brush. Upon her return, Dolly’s eyes went straight to the door hanger this time, and she nearly had X a fit when she read the words FOX POOH COLOGNE PLEASE! ppy This time the cheeky little puppy had really gone too far...

Hobbies Have You Got The Baking Bug? By Kate McLelland icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multi-layered framework (a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake.
28
In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With new cake-craft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bake-offs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug.
The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives. These days you can buy special tin moulds for cupcakes and it’s possible to experiment with a huge range of recipes. Try them out on family and friends, or if you’re feeling ambitious you can even enter the National Cupcake Championships. You can view the entry guidelines at www. nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk but hurry, as the deadline for entries is 15th August.
Much of the renewed interest in what can be achieved with butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers taking part in progressively harder challenges over a period of ten weeks. The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today.
Although many people enjoy pottering alone in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and finding original ways to decorate their cakes, The Great British Bake Off seems to have inspired a real enthusiasm for communal baking, whether that’s about learning together or indulging in friendly competition.
Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream
You can look up cake decorating courses in your
local area by going to www. cakedecoratingcourses.co.uk or alternatively visit your local library to find out if they hold a list. If you fancy getting away from it all in order to really focus on your art, then there are a number of cake decorating short breaks and holidays available, with one day courses costing from around £100 (not including accommodation). If you want a real holiday experience you could sign up for a cake-making course in France, with accommodation and meals included for £649 per person. See www.frenchcakebreaks.com for more details. For those who simply don’t have the money to spend on courses there are a number of tutorials on YouTube (www.youtube.com) that will teach you everything you need to know, from creating a basic cake mixture to advanced piping techniques. If you don’t enjoy learning alone, you can always invite a friend around to experiment with you, or get together with neighbours to create your own version of the Great British Bake Off. One thing’s for certain: there’ll be no lack of volunteers to help when it comes to tasting the results! By Kate McLelland

Finance Boost Your Income: How to Make Money from Crafting By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com
30
The growth in popularity of knitting, sewing and jewellery-making has provided skilled crafters with a golden opportunity to supplement their income. Not only is it possible to make good money from a creative hobby such as this, people young and old are starting successful businesses doing what they love. Many people make gifts for family and friends, but don’t always realise the potential to earn money from their hobby. Diverse influences including media interest, the economic collapse, and TV programmes such as The Great British Sewing Bee have all been instrumental in bringing about the revival of crafts once regarded as old-fashioned. So if you want to use your creativity to make some money, what are the best ways to sell, and how easy is it to get started?
Selling at craft fairs Craft fairs are considered the ‘traditional’ route to selling handcrafted items. They remain a good option if you can spare several days a month to focus on selling, in addition to the time needed to produce your items. Craft fairs and vintage markets are held regularly throughout the year, but because they are so popular, it is advisable to book well in advance. Some venues provide tables, equipment and electrical sockets, but in most cases you’ll have to provide your own table and
lighting. High quality spotlighting is a good investment for sellers with a long-term plan, and can encourage sales if the venue is dimly lit.
Selling online Selling online involves a little more planning and considerably more effort to be successful. In its favour it has the advantage of being flexible, and may fit more easily into your life. Not only will you need to produce items to sell, you’ll also need to develop your ‘shop,’ take and upload photos of each item, describe them well, estimate postage and packing charges, and continually market the business. If this is what you envisioned, there’s probably no better way to make money from crafting. Two websites set up to help you succeed in this respect are Folksy and Etsy, both being designed specifically for independent craftspeople and artisans. Folksy With more than 15,000 sellers on Folksy, this has become a strong community for crafters and buyers alike. A UK-based site that has been around since 2007, Folksy provides a great opportunity to create your own brand without it costing a fortune, get your creations in front of a global audience, and build a bona-fide craft business. • Basic account - 15p + VAT per item
- Items listed for 120 days - 6% + VAT commission • Folksy Plus - Annual charge of £45, inclusive of VAT - No individual listing fees - 6% + VAT commission Etsy If you start selling on Etsy you’ll be joining an established community of over 8 million members and 800,000 online shops. Launched in 2005, Etsy is based in America but also has a loyal following in the UK. It’s possible to link your Etsy account to a Facebook business page for additional exposure in this country. • Seller account - no membership fees - $0.20 to list an item for 4 months - 3.5% commission Lovingly handcrafted items of a high quality have more personality than mass-produced goods, and their unique nature makes them appealing to discerning buyers. Although not a get-rich-quick scheme, making items to sell has the potential to bring in some valuable extra income and provide muchneeded job satisfaction.

After 17 years of practicing Homeopathy, I wonder if we are becoming healthier as a nation? Was ADHD that common 15 years ago? What about Alzheimer’s, or the effects of super bugs, from the over use of antibiotics? As a homeopath, I meet people with conditions that we did not often see 15 or 20 years ago. Research shows that many people are looking for more natural healing therapies in order to avoid synthetic drugs.
32
I love my work, and would not do anything else. What I like most, is seeing people’s health improve, often an almost complete turn-around. It gives me great pleasure to do something that improves others’ lives in a meaningful, lasting way. Be it successfully helping a couple with infertility, a child with a skin condition, or an elderly person with increasing forgetfulness. I first experienced homeopathy when I received treatment for hayfever. It was so severe that I could not go out in the summer with my baby. I consulted a homeopath and the hayfever completely cleared! Delighted, I trained in Homeopathy myself and set up my own practice. Later, I discovered another simple but effective therapy - EFT-tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique. I am amazed how tapping various acupuncture points with our fingers and expressing the feelings around an emotional discomfort, anxiety or stress can help us to achieve complete everlasting results. EFT is also effective in clearing addictions, like smoking, alcohol or food cravings. I receive testimonials which are proof of this.

If you suffer allergies, consider trying NAET allergy elimination. My allergies to dairy products and wheat cleared with NAET. My website has more on this therapy. Having an interest in Nutrition and natural chemical-free ways of living, I give talks on these topics, and others, to local and national groups. With busy practices in Surrey and Kent, I also run regular courses on EFT-tapping and using Homeopathy in the home. One of my passions is to empower you to become self-reliant and confident in staying well and healthy. Please ring me for a chat or free 20 min taster session. Our next EFT courses take place on 14 September, and 20-22 September. I have recently become a certified CEASE therapist - Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression. Ring me to find out more.

Puzzle Time
WORDWHEEL
Sudoku
Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.
Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition! That’s all there is to it, you solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!
TARGET Excellent: 24 or more words Good: 19 words Fair: 16 words
