Welcome to the village directory Hi Everyone, Welcome to the September Issue, by the time you read this the Olympics will be well and truly over, but as I write I’m still reeling from the amazing closing ceremony on television last night. Although constantly tidying up after my teenage son can feel like a marathon at times, I’m not really into sport in a big way, but I must say I really caught the Olympics bug and for the first time watched with excitement and immense pride. Leading up to the games I didn’t think I would watch much of it but once we were introduced to some of the athletes, and we started doing so well, I was riveted to my screen every night. It was wonderful to have a whole two weeks of uplifting successes, not just from our sports men and women but also from the tremendous British fans and helpers. I think we showed the whole world the very professional, talented and fun side of us Brits. Although it did seem rather London centred at times I think the whole country can be proud of how this Olympics came together. Well done Team GB. Now it’s up to all of us to to maintain this very positive, uplifting vibe. The athletes have shown us how hard work and a positive mental attitude is the key to success. Have a great month!

to Norfolk in July and it just rained, rained, rained every day, but we still did the touristy thing, turning a blind eye to the fact we were sodden. One of the trips we went on was to the Queens abode of Sandringham. It was the garden I was most interested in, and was much surprised to find very little formal garden, but landscaping, (maybe something to do with the corgis perhaps?). But what landscaping, I have never seen such spruces, firs etc and colours blended so well. But hey, this is the Queens garden and you can’t expect anything less. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. At £11.50 entry it is not cheap, but worth every penny. The brochure stated to allow 3 hours for the visit, we were there for 5 hours and still did not see it all!

When we got back the garden had gone mad.

My dear neighbour, who kindly looks after the garden whilst we are away, had been picking the raspberries, which were just ripening when we left. She had already had 4pounds off the canes. I picked a further 6 pounds that day, using them for jam as there were so many. For the next 2 weeks I was picking at the rate of 1 pound (approx) a day Brush and Vac for a further two weeks. Not bad for a row that’s Friendly, Clean, Reliable Service only 6 foot long! I can only assume that the good manure they had at the start of the season and all Every Type of Flue Swept Pots, Cowls & Bird Guards Fitted the early rain really suited their needs. Don’t forget after fruiting cut out the old canes and tie in the Stove Installations NAC’s Certificates Issued new. Turns out the ground had been so cold with all the rain we had, that the plants just wanted to run to seed! But radish M: 07857 344770 wasn’t the only disaster. The hot spell in March/ e: bensko@talktalk.net April brought flowers on the fruit trees early, but A CLEAN CHIMNEY IS A SAFE CHIMNEY then, before the bees could do their work we had the awful cold spell. Seasonal Delights This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.

10

Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Lamb and Aubergine Curry

Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil.

• 3 tbsp sunflower oil

Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.

• 400g sieved tomatoes

Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes

• 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve

TIP

You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Forward thinking kitchen design for later years As we enjoy healthier lives for longer we need to forward plan, investing in our homes to make them much easier for use in older age.

into sharp edges. They help to soften the room and are a stylish design feature to end a run of cabinets.

The kitchen area is a prime example of where you can have quality, design-led solutions that not only make it useable for you today but can still be used as you grow older with no compromise on style.

Make things easier on your lower extremities by moving your appliances off the floor. A range cooker may look lovely but involves lots of bending to use and is high maintenance to clean, not to mention high maintenance to clean. High line ovens & fridges at waist level mean easy access & less bending.

At J M Interiors we’re highly experienced at planning kitchens with this objective in mind and find following these design tips really do help to keep kitchens smart, functional and above all easy to use & maintain.

Keep everything within reach Base cupboards and low level shelving mean lots of bending and reaching. Opt instead for drawers; they more than double your storage space as well as making everything well organised and easy to access. Increase your storage capacity by incorporating accessible corner solutions such as magic corners, carousels, swingouts and rotating trays. Their ergonomic design means smooth operations and safe storing of all your kitchen items.

Soften harsh edges Think about incorporating curved cupboards and surfaces to prevent knocks

Remove things from the floor

Make it easy to clean & maintain There are a couple of must have features to help you cut down on cleaning time in your kitchen; •

Keep cabinetry unfussy, free from excessive detail for clean lines and smooth surfaces.

Granite or composite stone worktops are practical, durable & the easiest of surfaces to clean.

Induction hobs are a wonder – so easy to use and only need a quick wipe over.

Pyrolitic ovens have a fully automatic selfcleaning function, which at a touch of a button removes all food residues with no unpleasant odours or chemical cleaning agents.

business HAVE YOU GOT YOUR WILL AND ESTATE PLANNING IN ORDER? In another of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson, from Tenterden Solicitors Pengelly & Rylands, explains the importance of making a Will and putting your Estate in order. Did you know, 7 out of 10 of us do not have a Will, although dying without one could cause upset for loved ones. If you die without a Will, your Estate may not pass to those you intend and the Intestacy laws apply. Under these laws, only married or civil partners will benefit. No one has a right to inherit if they are just cohabiting but are not married or civil partners. There is a misconception by many people that if you live with someone, you automatically get something if that person dies. If there is no Will the cohabitee would have to bring a claim against their partner’s Estate, which you can only do if you have lived with them for at least two years. Such a claim can be time consuming, costly and ultimately may not be successful.

18

Couples who are not married do not have the same exemption that applies to married couples or civil partners to pass any amount of money or assets to one another without having to pay Inheritance Tax. If you are married and have not made a Will, your Estate will not be given automatically to your spouse. They will take the first £250,000 of your Estate outright. The balance will be split into two parts; one part will pass outright to any children you have, equally, at 18 and the other part will be held on a life interest trust for your spouse, following which it will pass to your children outright. If you have no children but you have parents or brothers and sisters living, then your spouse will take £450,000 of your Estate outright, but the balance will again be split into two parts; one part will pass to your spouse outright, the other to your parents and failing that to your siblings outright. A further complication of dying without a Will is that an administrator must be appointed by the Court to distribute the Estate, rather than the Executor that you would have chosen, had you had a Will. An administrator is usually a close family member who is eligible to inherit and they must apply for a Grant of Letters of Administration. If more than one person wants to administer the Estate, the application can be contested, making the process even more drawn out and painful.

Rosalind Johnson – Senior Partner There are also many financial benefits from having a Will in place, the laws of Intestacy take no account of the type of assets you own and their tax treatment, which can lead to unnecessary tax bills. By way of an example, specific business assets or shares in a family business can pass under the terms of your Will to the next generation, free of Inheritance Tax if they qualify for Business Property Relief. If you would like to discuss your circumstances and make a Will, please contact either Rosalind Johnson or Gill Snow at Pengelly & Rylands on 01580 762248 and we will be very pleased to discuss your situation with you.

TURN THE SKY PINK 30th September

Butterfly Beauty Therapy are helping to Turn the Sky Pink with the big jump on 10th October for Breast Cancer Campaign. Yes, we really are going to be sky diving out of a plane at 10,000 ft, and hope to raise money for the charity. Two of us from the Salon will be taking part and we must raise a minimum of £395 each to be able to do the jump. We have already made our own personal donataions of £70 each to secure our places on the plane. When the Breast Cancer Campaign approached Butterfly Beauty Therapy to ‘be part of the cure’ we couldn’t say no. Scared as we are, as is anyone of jumping out of a plane at 10,000 ft, this has to be done. Please excuse us if we have bitten unmanicured nails running up to 30th September and immediately after! We will have a Pink Polishathon on Fri 7th September where clients young and old can come and have their nails painted PINK at the salon for a donation of any size. We will have facepainting, soft drinks and strawberries for a fun day and all proceeds will go towards the Breast Cancer Campaign. During September we will also be visiting schools in the areas to carry out Pink Polishathons in the playground at pick up time, so look out for that. We will also have collection pots in the salon for anyone who wishes to donate. You can also call us to make a donation over the phone too. Come to the salon any time to have your nails painted pink and make a donation to the cause, but booking is advised as it will be subject to availability.

The deadline is 20th October but please act now so that we can hand over the majority of the money to the Breast Cancer Campaign on our jump date 10th October. On a personal note, last month a close family member had surgery for breast cancer, she is now due to start her second course of chemotherapy. (not mentioning names as she’ll kill me!) Her positive and brave outlook on her situation has been inspiring. This is such an important cause, by taking part with your support we can all help to fund vital research. There are many ways to donate, pop in to the salon, call us or find us on Facebook (search for Butterfly Beauty Therapy) to make a secure payment.

and refined in Far Eastern countries such as China for more than 2500 years. Chinese medicine holds that health is affected by the flow and balance of energy, qi (pronounced “chee”) that is within our body and all around us.

Acupuncture for Physical and Emotional Wellbeing 26

Acupuncture deals with the whole person, not just the symptoms, providing an individual approach, rather than one size fits all. As a truly holistic therapy acupuncture incorporates a range of supportive techniques including: tuina a special Chinese massage; moxa, a herb which when lit provides deep warmth for the body to aid the smooth flow of energy; cupping- as experienced by various sports and media stars! Some of my patients also enjoy being taught qi gong, an ancient aid for health and relaxation. The national Acupuncture Awareness Week (27th February - 4th March) highlighted the growing interest in acupuncture. So next time you have a concern of condition, or simply wish to maintain health, let your curiosity get the better of you and opt for a natural way for health, with the ancient art of acupuncture.

“Oh, I couldn’t possibly have needles put in me”, is a common reaction patients hear from some of their Stephen Bayliss BSc(Hons), BA (Hons), PGCE, MEd, Lic. Ac, MBAcC family and friends when they mention that they Acupuncturist, Acupuncture Kent. have received acupuncture. But those doubters soon change their mind when they learn from ACUPUNCTURE the increasing number of people benefiting from Physical and Emotional Wellbeing acupuncture. Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions, not only physical, but also emotional/ spiritual. It also supports the maintenance of health and can reduce the likelihood of future illnesses. Acupuncture needles, unlike hypodermic needles used in conventional medical practice, are very fine and not hollow. Typically the patient may feel a dull ache or tingling. Treatment is often very calming and indeed, I have lost count of the number of patients who exhibit very satisfied sounds of relaxation, with what sounds suspiciously like a snore! Perhaps it is a sign that so many people in modern society are so rushed and busy that they respond wonderfully to the tranquillity induced by acupuncture. This is a good reminder that acupuncture benefits not only a wide range of physical conditions such as backache and other pains, headaches, digestion, vitality and fertility/ menstrual concerns, but also numerous emotional/ spiritual needs such as anxiety, confidence and the need for relaxation. So what is acupuncture? It is a safe and natural approach to health and wellbeing. It has been used
