Welcome to the village directory Hi Everyone, Welcome to the September Issue, by the time you read this the Olympics will be well and truly over, but as I write I’m still reeling from the amazing closing ceremony on television last night. Although constantly tidying up after my teenage son can feel like a marathon at times, I’m not really into sport in a big way, but I must say I really caught the Olympics bug and for the first time watched with excitement and immense pride. Leading up to the games I didn’t think I would watch much of it but once we were introduced to some of the athletes, and we started doing so well, I was riveted to my screen every night. It was wonderful to have a whole two weeks of uplifting successes, not just from our sports men and women but also from the tremendous British fans and helpers. I think we showed the whole world the very professional, talented and fun side of us Brits.
Although it did seem rather London centred at times I think the whole country can be proud of how this Olympics came together. Well done Team GB. Now it’s up to all of us to to maintain this very positive, uplifting vibe. The athletes have shown us how hard work and a positive mental attitude is the key to success. Have a great month!

The Garden Shed
September
By Jackie Witcher Tenterden & District Horticultural Society
Since the last column we have had a holiday, up
to Norfolk in July and it just rained, rained, rained every day, but we still did the touristy thing, turning a blind eye to the fact we were sodden. One of the trips we went on was to the Queens abode of Sandringham. It was the garden I was most interested in, and was much surprised to find very little formal garden, but landscaping, (maybe something to do with the corgis perhaps?). But what landscaping, I have never seen such spruces, firs etc and colours blended so well. But hey, this is the Queens garden and you can’t expect anything less. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. At £11.50 entry it is not cheap, but worth every penny. The brochure stated to allow 3 hours for the visit, we were there for 5 hours and still did not see it all!
6
When we got back the garden had gone mad.
My dear neighbour, who kindly looks after the garden whilst we are away, had been picking the raspberries, which were just ripening when we left. She had already had 4pounds off the canes. I picked a further 6 pounds that day, using them for jam as there were so many. For the next 2 weeks I was picking at the rate of 1 pound (approx) a day for a further two weeks. Not bad for a row that’s only 6 foot long! I can only assume that the good manure they had at the start of the season and all the early rain really suited their needs. Don’t forget after fruiting cut out the old canes and tie in the new. Mine are growing on trellis, so I tend to arch them along side each other, which not only seems to promote growth and fruit, but gives me a nice feature in the garden as well as a “privacy” hedge.
The new sowing of radish turned out to be a waste
of space. All top and no root, and I wasn’t the only one who had this trouble. Turns out the ground had been so cold with all the rain we had, that the plants just wanted to run to seed! But radish wasn’t the only disaster. The hot spell in March/ April brought flowers on the fruit trees early, but then, before the bees could do their work we had

the awful cold spell. I had the grand total of 0 pears, So report time of firstly “those” lettuce. I ended 1 apple and 8 plums. I was so disappointed as this up with two of the most biggest lettuce I had was year two and I was looking forward to at least a ever grown, though I must say the flavour was no moderate crop. Still hey ho, there’s always next year. different to a standard Webbs Wonder. They would done well on the show bench, accept there On a lighter note, the runners were prolific and have was no show! Needless to say I won’t grow them delicious, even though the plants were a bit sparse, again. The sweet peppers got going at long last, and and the Helga beans did not disappoint. If your from the one plant had six fruits. Not bad. strapped for space these beans do well in tubs or troughs. Just remember to feed well. The beauty The basket tomatoes, what can I say, they finally of the Helga bean is that they are stringless, though fruited, though the return per plant was low. The I must admit I do prefer the stronger flavour of the flavour was good, but nothing to write home runner bean. Now carrots. I have now learnt that about and definitely not worth the cost of the seed. the best thing for me is to grow them in a large Though to be fair, the plants were very pretty! tub, and thin them out well. I have tried for several seasons growing them straight in the ground, but I have come to a decision. I shall NOT peruse the the success rate is low. If creatures haven’t had a seed catalogues or shelves at the garden centres nibble, then they have extra legs or carrot fly. So this year, otherwise I could be tempted to stray yet for the last couple of years I have grown them in again and spend money unnecessarily, instead I a tub of compost, which is about two foot deep. I shall stick to what I know will give me a good return thin to approx 1 ½ to 2” apart and lo and behold, I for my money. But then again if I didn’t try them out have at long last had a good crop of large tender I wouldn’t know – would I? carrots. No need to scrape or peel, just wash and Look at the time, got a choice today of lemon drizzle lightly simmer for approx 10 minutes then serve or Victoria sponge. I hate making decisions. I shall with a nice pat of butter. Try them with a smidge of just have to have a bit of each, thin slices of course! horseradish sauce – its sublime. JW

Seasonal Delights This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey.
12
Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Lamb and Aubergine Curry
Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil.
• 3 tbsp sunflower oil
Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.
• 400g sieved tomatoes
Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.
Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes
• 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve
TIP
You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Forward thinking kitchen design for later years 18
As we enjoy healthier lives for longer we need to forward plan, investing in our homes to make them much easier for use in older age.
into sharp edges. They help to soften the room and are a stylish design feature to end a run of cabinets.
The kitchen area is a prime example of where you can have quality, design-led solutions that not only make it useable for you today but can still be used as you grow older with no compromise on style.
Make things easier on your lower extremities by moving your appliances off the floor. A range cooker may look lovely but involves lots of bending to use and is high maintenance to clean, not to mention high maintenance to clean. High line ovens & fridges at waist level mean easy access & less bending.
At J M Interiors we’re highly experienced at planning kitchens with this objective in mind and find following these design tips really do help to keep kitchens smart, functional and above all easy to use & maintain.
Keep everything within reach Base cupboards and low level shelving mean lots of bending and reaching. Opt instead for drawers; they more than double your storage space as well as making everything well organised and easy to access. Increase your storage capacity by incorporating accessible corner solutions such as magic corners, carousels, swingouts and rotating trays. Their ergonomic design means smooth operations and safe storing of all your kitchen items.
Soften harsh edges Think about incorporating curved cupboards and surfaces to prevent knocks
Remove things from the floor
Make it easy to clean & maintain There are a couple of must have features to help you cut down on cleaning time in your kitchen; •
Keep cabinetry unfussy, free from excessive detail for clean lines and smooth surfaces.
•
Granite or composite stone worktops are practical, durable & the easiest of surfaces to clean.
•
Induction hobs are a wonder – so easy to use and only need a quick wipe over.
•
Pyrolitic ovens have a fully automatic selfcleaning function, which at a touch of a button removes all food residues with no unpleasant odours or chemical cleaning agents.
Need some further help? Give the J M Interiors team a call on 01580 291221 or pop into our Biddenden showroom which is packed full of design ideas and inspiration. by JM Interiors

business HAVE YOU GOT YOUR WILL AND ESTATE PLANNING IN ORDER? In another of our regular series on legal matters, Rosalind Johnson, from Tenterden Solicitors Pengelly & Rylands, explains the importance of making a Will and putting your Estate in order. Did you know, 7 out of 10 of us do not have a Will, although dying without one could cause upset for loved ones. If you die without a Will, your Estate may not pass to those you intend and the Intestacy laws apply. Under these laws, only married or civil partners will benefit. No one has a right to inherit if they are just cohabiting but are not married or civil partners. There is a misconception by many people that if you live with someone, you automatically get something if that person dies. If there is no Will the cohabitee would have to bring a claim against their partner’s Estate, which you can only do if you have lived with them for at least two years. Such a claim can be time consuming, costly and ultimately may not be successful.
20
Couples who are not married do not have the same exemption that applies to married couples or civil partners to pass any amount of money or assets to one another without having to pay Inheritance Tax. If you are married and have not made a Will, your Estate will not be given automatically to your spouse. They will take the first £250,000 of your Estate outright. The balance will be split into two parts; one part will pass outright to any children you have, equally, at 18 and the other part will be held on a life interest trust for your spouse, following which it will pass to your children outright. If you have no children but you have parents or brothers and sisters living, then your spouse will take £450,000 of your Estate outright, but the balance will again be split into two parts; one part will pass to your spouse outright, the other to your parents and failing that to your siblings outright. A further complication of dying without a Will is that an administrator must be appointed by the Court to distribute the Estate, rather than the Executor that you would have chosen, had you had a Will. An administrator is usually a close family member who is eligible to inherit and they must apply for a Grant of Letters of Administration. If more than one person wants to administer the Estate, the application can be contested, making the process even more drawn out and painful.
Rosalind Johnson – Senior Partner There are also many financial benefits from having a Will in place, the laws of Intestacy take no account of the type of assets you own and their tax treatment, which can lead to unnecessary tax bills. By way of an example, specific business assets or shares in a family business can pass under the terms of your Will to the next generation, free of Inheritance Tax if they qualify for Business Property Relief. If you would like to discuss your circumstances and make a Will, please contact either Rosalind Johnson or Gill Snow at Pengelly & Rylands on 01580 762248 and we will be very pleased to discuss your situation with you.

Gold Medal Performance For Pilgrims Hospices Summer Fair It was a record breaking day for Pilgrims Hospices Summer Fair. The sun shone and the crowds came. 0ver 2000 people poured through the gates to enjoy everything from the cake stall to high end fashion, a human fruit machine to the Pimm’s tent. As a result nearly £19,000 was raised, smashing last year’s total. Shona Hardyke, one of the many visitors throughout the day expressed her delight saying, “The whole family enjoyed the fair. The children loved the amazing variety of stalls and wanted to go on everything. They were absolutely delighted to be able to buy some great mirrors from the craft stall which will adorn their walls very soon. Congratulations to everyone for making it such a wonderful day. I look forward to next year now.” Natalie Shoebridge, from NatWest Ashford, ran the High End Fashion Stall. She said, “It was an amazing day. People loved the chance to try on some of the fabulous clothes which were just a sample of the high quality items that can be bought in many of Pilgrims charity shops. “ Deborah Jarrett who ran one of the bottle tombolas described how busy they were, “We had a constant stream of people throughout the fair, right to the closing minutes. With 1000 bottles to be won we were very popular. The generosity of the shoppers at Sainsbury’s in Ashford and New Romney, who donated the bottles, meant that we were able to please many people with lots of winning tickets on the day.” Nigel Donkin, Regional Fundraising Manager said, “It was a delight to welcome so many from the community to the grounds of the hospice. It is so heart warming to see such support. I would like to extend
my deepest thanks to the 150 staff, volunteers and supporters who worked so hard to make the day such a great success. The staggering amount raised in such an economically difficult time is a tribute to the dedication of so many who hold Pilgrims in high regard. It will enable us to continue to move forward in the way that we provide care for all who need it, both within the hospice and at home.”

Sun Shines on the Lions Raft Race & Fete T
26
This year, despite the dubious weather forecast, the sun shone on a record crowd at the Annual Rye Raft Race and Fete organised by Rye and District Lions Club. This was the 34th Race organised by the Lions who usually expect some 5,000 members of the public to attend. However, this year the numbers were so great that they found it impossible to estimate how many turned up for the event, but many, many more than ever before. The queues for both the barbecue and the beer tent were long and both ran out just before the end of the day. The Lions are still adding up the money, but estimate that the day raised some £6,500 for charity and that is not including any money that the raft crews themselves raised from sponsorship.
Richie McGowan, together with several other musicians and bands played throughout the afternoon to the great delight of the public who sat on the grass, or were picnicking and several couples danced to the music.
The Lions were a little disappointed at a smaller entry of rafts this year and are already planning how to bring the number up to the usual level for next year. However, those stalwarts competing completed the three laps of the course following the start signal on the klaxon, whilst bombarding their rivals, and any spectators within reach, with copious flour and water bombs. Even the crew of one of the rescue boats looked like a snowman. As usual, very few crew members completed the course without managing to take a swim at times. Hastings and Rye MP, Amber Rudd and Rye’s Mayor, Shaun Rogers were escorted on the Harbour Master’s new boat by the Lions President, Malcolm McDonough in relative safety.
hird was a raft from Plumbline in 22 minutes 58 seconds and they won the trophy for a crew of six to ten and also the trophy for fancy dress. The fourth to finish was the regular raft from Lady Penelope Hairdressers in a time of 23 minutes 34 seconds and they were awarded the trophy for the last to finish unaided. The Standard Inn crew were fifth in 28 minutes 14 seconds, after receiving a tow, and won the trophy for the most unusual raft. An entry from The Railway Inn, Appledore seemed to be so intent on trying to sabotage other rafts that they failed to complete the course.
Following the Race, engraved silver trophies were presented to class winners by Amber Rudd and Shaun Rogers. Rye Lions were also pleased this year to welcome the District Governor of the Southeast Lions, Phil Robinson. His area covers all of East and West Sussex, Kent, Surrey and London south of the Thames. With his wife, Jackie, who happens to be the District Secretary, he also presented the trophies. All crew members were also presented with a certificate to prove they took part.
Rye Lions President, Malcolm McDonough, thanked Amber Rudd, Shaun Rogers, Phil Robinson, all who had competed, the stall holders and the public for their support, pointing out that all the money raised that day would go to various charities, many local. Special thanks for their continuing support was due to Rye Harbour Master, James Bateman, Assistant Harbour Master, Carl Bagwell MBE, Rye Harbour Marine for providing the safety boats, Ritchie McGowan and the other musiJempsons Haulage for the use of their trailer The fastest raft was from Atlas Business Park, with a cians, for the bands and all the Lions, Friends of Lions and time of 18 minutes 18 seconds, winning the trophy for their families for all their help on the day. first past the post. Second was a raft crewed by Rye Bonfire Boys, in a time of 18 minutes 48 seconds winning the trophy for a crew of under six, sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

Private Care Service at Bathtimes
Our Private Care Service carers can come to your house and assist you in taking a bath or a shower. This help can form part of a tailored package of care that could help you stay in your own home for longer, rather than going into a care home before its really needed. We can assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible, with comfort and dignity, in their own home.
