Welcome to the village directory Hi everyone, Welcome to the September Issue and the onset of a new season. Can you believe it, Christmas has been mentioned for the very first time and the sight of snow on the front cover reminds me that I must place my firewood order before they get too busy. As always in September, school is very much on the agenda, as you’ll see from this month’s content. School days in my family will soon be a distant memory as my “Petrol Head” son heads off to college to engross himself in vehicle technology and motor sport. I think I’m witnessing a metamorphosis, cuddly little boy turned into nocturnal, slightly grungy teenager, any time now an adult will appear before my very eyes. The transformation will be complete but he will never stop learning! September is the month to get yourself organised for the winter season, so get those boilers checked, order those logs and tackle any outdoor jobs while the weather permits. Lastly I would like to send my very best wishes for a speedy recovery to Jackie Witcher, anyone following her gardening articles each month will know that she is having her “Dicky Ticker” mended. We miss you Jackie, get well soon! Have a great month

the garden

Weed Attack by Pippa Greenwood Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multipronged attack strategy. Off with their Heads

4

Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.

Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run. Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming

tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.

The Speechless Poet

Way back in May I heard on TV that a reporter, allegedly interviewing Kate, Princess Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, had been told that she had no idea if her expected baby was to be a boy or a girl. I thought, “ Even if she did know, she certainly wouldn’t tell the media.” Also she is alleged to have told him that she would dearly like a son, whereas William would like a daughter. A typical press story I thought, to be taken with a pinch of salt, but on reflection there could be some truth in it. Therefore in my poetic fashion, I wrote a poem granting her wish for a son, and thinking it good enough, posted it to her at Buckingham Palace. I fully expected to be carried off to the tower for audacity, but was pleasantly surprised in June to get a lovely letter from her, saying that she loved the poem. I am sure she would’nt mind me sharing it with you.

6

The Royal Babe Welcome my young prince, to the human race, your sweet innocence, plain to see. Life’s long journey starts at this gentle pace, as you begin your own family tree. Each day you will see and slowly learn, to recognise those around you. See their warmth and love, as each in turn, with their eyes show their feelings true. Every step of the way. they will guard you, as the precious babe that you are. Every step of the way, they will guide you, those near and those afar. And so young prince, you will slowly grow, learning so many wondrous things, of astronauts and eskimos, of cabbages and kings. But babe you will always remember, your mother and fathers love, something you will always cherish, and why sent from god above.

Family Law and Dispute Resolution In the latest of a series of articles about legal matters affecting the family, Nigel Clarke, Resolution Trainer, Collaborative Solicitor & Accredited Family Mediator from Kent and Surrey Family Resolution and Johnson Clarke Solicitors writes: We know that couples are now more willing to find a civilised way of resolving issues when faced with the anxiety and stress of separation and divorce.

10

An increasing number of couples are prepared to try an approach that can often be very cost effective whilst really valuing what they have to say and what matters to them most.

Family Mediation and the Collaborative Law process offer really effective alternatives to what is perceived to be the ‘traditional’ way of resolving family disputes (when couples’ solicitors exchange protracted correspondence which can often lead to misunderstandings, can cause unnecessary conflict, worry, anxiety and increased expense. Family Mediation and Collaborative Law allow the real concerns of clients to be heard and taken notice of in a way that is often not possible in the ‘traditional’ court based approach. Clients are given their own voice and real control over the outcome and are supported and helped to see things from their partner’s and their children’s perspectives. The long term outcomes are cost effective and positive and couples can and do begin to rebuild their lives apart so that life begins to feels better again.

Couples who find themselves in these difficult situations report on their positive experiences of the Family Mediation and Collaborative Law process: Many report that it was by far the best thing they could have done, that they feel sure they would have been more damaged without the support that these processes offer and that the emotional support and guidance they receive through working together enables them to achieve sensible, fair, positive outcomes which are often far better than anything achieved by their family or friends who have dealt with their divorce or separation in the traditional way. Whatever the reasons for the breakdown of a relationship, it is rarely an easy emotional ride for the couple, their children or for their family and friends. However, with the right approach and support from trained professionals who positively promote forms of dispute resolution the process can be considerably improved and positive plans for the future can begin to take shape for the benefit of the whole family. How can I find help? It is important to make sure your Lawyer is trained to be able to offer Family Mediation or Collaborative Law. Resolution (www.resolution.org.uk): a national organisation committed to promoting family mediation and collaborative law as a means of resolving family disputes provide details of Family Mediators and Collaborative Lawyers in your area. The Law Society (www.lawsociety.org.uk/ accreditation) provide details of lawyers who have earned special recognition in Family Mediation and are Accredited specialist members of the Family Mediation Panel. A well trained family Lawyer will always offer a choice of all forms of dispute resolution For more information please contact: Nigel Clarke Collaborative Solicitor & Accredited Family Mediator Kent & Surrey Family Resolution and Johnson Clarke Solicitors Offices at: Canterbury * Tenterden * Hampton on Thames Telephone 01227 8117540 www.johnsonclarke.co.uk

wit & wisdom

Divine Email Blunder A couple decided to go to Australia for their annual holiday. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules, so the husband left home and flew to Australia on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. On arrival in Australia the husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife, however, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address and without realising his error, sent the email. Meanwhile somewhere in England a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack.

The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor and saw the computer screen which read: To: My Loving Wife Subject: I’ve Arrived Date: June 16, 2013 I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. P.S. Sure is hot down here!
