N & E Window Cleaning Services

Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the summer edition and phew, what a scorcher we’ve had so far! I’m so glad we didn’t go abroad this year, at the time we went away temperatures across Europe were breaking records at well into the 40’s - too hot! The weather in Cornwall was perfect though, enough for a sun tan but not uncomfortable, and as we usually to go in June it’s not too busy. We returned from holiday just in time to catch that amazing finish to the Cricket World Cup! Now I’m not a sporty person at all but my husband is, and as a result, over the years, I’ve been coaxed into watching the odd Rugby match here and there, but never in a million years did I think that Cricket could ever hold my attention. It was unbelievable! I didn’t understand a lot of it but it was exciting! I’m afraid there’s a long way to go though before I’ll watch Football! On our return from holiday my husband had the misfortune of having to visit A&E at the William Harvey hospital. I am so in awe of the doctors and nurses there, they are very special human beings. We’ve had the misfortune of attending A&E a number of times over the past few years, if it’s not my husband it’s my son! The staff there are brilliant, we would like to thank nurses Jenny Taylor and Grace Knight, not just for patching him up so well but also for their humour that lifted the mood following his harrowing experience. Your names are etched on our memories, you both know why! Thank you so much. Logo master.indd 1

Until next time, have a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend.

The Garden

Add Some Vertical Interest Whether your garden is large or small, long, wide or a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden? Position an arbour it so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem

4

a lot larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themselves are good looking and can be a feature in their own right, so don’t necessarily go for the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal. Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient:

Any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy.

If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour – when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released. Arches and arbours are available in a wide range of materials, but by far the most popular are those made from wood or metal. To a large extent it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or

The Garden metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one of the numerous and readily available wood stains or paints to transform it from its natural subtly coloured state to a bright blue, rich red or pretty well any colour you fancy!

naturally going to resist decay – western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my first choice, with Douglas fir or larch a close second. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper.

Although it is possible to construct an arch or an arbour from scratch yourself, you will be amazed at the range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours that are now available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either

By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to several local garden centres or taking a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier! By Pippa Greenwood

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, ladybirds and other great natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, planters, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?

Woodstock: The Iconic Festival Turns 50 The Woodstock Festival was recognised as an iconic event even as it was taking place. 50 years on, we look at its beginnings and legacy. A plan turned into chaos Woodstock was the brainchild of four young men looking for an investment opportunity: John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld (youngest vice president at Capitol Records) and Michael Lang (organiser of the 1968 Miami Music Festival). They planned to build a recording studio and retreat for musicians in Woodstock, New York (where Bob Dylan and other musicians lived), and decided to fund it via a rock concert for 50,000 people

12

in Wallkill, New York, on 15th18th August 1969. Tickets were distributed and bands signed up, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, whose fame encouraged other big names to become involved. It was on!

Woodstock was muddy; there was not nearly enough water, food or toilets Or was it? Wallkill’s citizens, not keen on being overrun by hippies, passed a law banning

the concert from their vicinity on 2nd July. Stores stopped selling tickets and bands started to reconsider their involvement. Luckily, Max Yasgur offered up his dairy farm in Bethel, New York, but preparations had been massively delayed, including the construction of tickets booths and gates. By August 13th, 50,000 people had walked through the gaps in the fence and camped near the stage. With no way to get them to leave or pay, the organisers declared the concert free – and the audience swelled to over 400,000 people.

The Home A triumph for counter-culture Despite delays, the Woodstock Festival (aka An Aquarian Exposition: Three Days of Peace and Music) was opened, nearly on time, by spiritual teacher and yogi, Swami Satchidananda. Richie Havens followed him on to the stage because the original opening act, Sweetwater, were stuck in traffic caused by thousands of people still flocking to the event. During his enforced three-hour set, Richie’s improvised jam, Freedom, was a signature moment. Bands and artists including Joan Baez, Santana, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, Sly and the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane and

The Who (who played their rock opera, Tommy) followed. With the whole show running late, on Sunday, the Festival began to wind down. Only 25,000 remained to hear Jimi Hendrix bring the festival to a close early on Monday morning, with an epic set that included his unique take on The Star Spangled Banner. Various anniversary concerts have taken place, including Woodstock ’94, which featured Bob Dylan (who declined to perform in ’69). ‘Woodstock 50’ will be held at New York’s Watkins Glen on 16th-18th August and will feature The Killers, Dead & Company, Jay Z,

Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons and Santana (performers at the original festival). Woodstock was muddy; there was a lot of sex, drugs and rock and roll and not nearly enough water, food or toilets; two people died; and the organisers were left massively in debt. Yet the festival, which would become known simply as ‘Woodstock’, was largely peaceful, becoming a landmark musical event and an iconic snapshot of ‘60s counter-culture and societal change. Appropriately, a 1960s museum and the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which hosts outdoor concerts, now sit on the site. By Alison Runham

• Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Maple Glazed Pork with Mediterranean Veg Kebabs

These chunky meat kebabs with a sweet sticky glaze are perfect for a barbeque or al fresco supper served with warmed flatbreads and salad.

Makes 8 Ingredients 750g lean pork fillet, cubed Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp dried oregano 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large red peppers, deseeded and cubed 2 courgettes, sliced 2 red onions, peeled and cubed 6 tbsp maple syrup 4 tbsp tomato ketchup

TIP

1 tbsp mild mustard

26

Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Toss to coat then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight. Thread the pork, pepper, courgettes and red onion onto 8 long metal skewers. Cook on a preheated barbeque or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred. Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.

Marinating the meat in lemon juice and oil will make it extra tender. Add some chopped chilli for a spicy touch or add 2 tbsp light soy sauce, if liked.

Why Doctors are Prescribing Mindfulness Mindfulness is increasingly recommended by doctors for mental health Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what exactly is it – and who and how can it help? Mindfulness is… • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling, considering what events sparked these thoughts and feelings, and how they might change your behaviour. • Paying attention to all the physical and emotional sensations you’re experiencing. How can mindfulness help, and who will benefit from it? Today, many of us lead very busy lives and rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ to things and often missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting, and separating yourself, even if just momentarily, from past regrets and future worries by focusing on the present. It can help you gain a greater awareness of the drivers of your behaviours and

28

anxieties, and so help you get better control of them. “It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre.

from a medical point of view, mindfulness is now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a way to prevent depression in people who have had three or more bouts of depression in the past.

It’s also increasingly recommended by doctors for those suffering chronic conditions or pain (which can be Mindfulness is increasingly the cause of ongoing stress), and recommended by doctors for for those suffering from stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can mental health help with insomnia, too. Mindfulness can help you appreciate things that you previously took for granted, like the taste of your favourite sandwich or the birdsong as you leave for work. And by becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can begin to see patterns and recognise those that aren’t helpful, and recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier. By recognising negative thought patterns, we can help ourselves learn to not let them overwhelm us or lead us into a spiral of negative, dominating thoughts or negative actions that make the situation worse (one of the main principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)). Mindfulness is something we can all benefit from. However,

Practising Mindfulness So how do mindfulness?

you

practise

You can practise it anytime, anywhere, but it seems to work best if you make the effort to do it regularly, and try to choose a time each day to practise it, in addition to occasions when you practise it ‘on the go’. It could be: on the way to or from work; at lunchtime; first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Experiment to find the time most convenient and useful for you. Reminding yourself to take notice of your thoughts, feelings, body sensations and the world around you is the first step to mindfulness.

Health & Lifestyle

The NHS recommends: Noticing the everyday: focusing on the details of what’s going on around you. Trying something new: sitting in a different seat in meetings or on the bus, or going somewhere new for lunch, can also help you notice the world in a new way. Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: trying to view them dispassionately. “It might be useful to remember that mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them as they come and label them. “I’m worried about my Dad’s health.” “This is stress; I’ve got a busy week and I’m worried I won’t fit everything in.” “I’m anxious about my exam.”

feet

You’veProfessional probably heard the Healthcare adage that often our Foot fear of something is worse than the thing itself. By

willow tree hair & beauty

being aware of your fears and concerns, you may be able to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the problem on which they’re based. Freeing yourself from the past and future An important facet of mindfulness is the realisation that worries about the past or the future can dominate your thoughts and blight your present, stopping you from enjoying the time you have now. If you realise that you’ve been reliving negative past experiences or are caught up in worries about the future for several minutes, try taking a few moments to focus yourself back in the now, and appreciate the day, hour and minute you’re in. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, where you focus on your breathing and your body, bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline.com, or you can find a local teacher: bemindful.co.uk/learnmindfulness.

A Hug for the Mayor!! Local students from the Kumon Ashford South Study Centre were recognised at an Advanced Student Honour Roll awards ceremony at the Singleton Environment Centre on May 4th for their success studying on the Kumon Maths and English Programmes, where young Ethan Ross showed his appreciation by giving the Mayor a big hug ! Thirty students and their parents attended the awards ceremony. The then Mayor of Ashford, Cllr Jessamy Blanford, accompanied by the Chairman of the Great Chart with Singleton Parish Council Cllr Ian McClintock, presented students with their certificates and medals for surpassing the Kumon International Standard which means that they are studying advanced work in comparison to their peers world-wide. The short ceremony was followed by a half hour of songs from the Ashford Rock Choir, raising money for the Singleton Environment Centre to run all kinds of activities for local children. Daily study of the Kumon programmes requires dedication and perseverance from both the student and their parents. This ceremony is a chance to not only reward and celebrate the students’ achievements but to also thank parents for their ongoing commitment to their child’s Kumon studies. Instructor at the study centre, Liz Spencer, said: “I’m so proud of all the students here and those who could unfortunately not make it today. They have all shown real determination and commitment, building confidence and really earning these awards” Established for 60 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their independent study skills and confidently tackle advanced work beyond the international standard for their age. Students initially start at a comfortable level with a focus on building a strong 30

foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm before progressing to more advanced work. Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, with over 77,000 students studying at more than 680 study centres. For more information, please contact Instructor Liz Spencer on 07710 238551 or email ashfordsouth@kumoncentre.co.uk.
