Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the Spring Edition. I do hope you are all well, this has proven to be a particularly difficult introduction to write this month, as we are now living through a period of extreme uncertainty. As this magazine goes to print the advice relating to the spread of Corona Virus is changing daily, therefore a big question mark hangs over all of our social gatherings and way of life for the time being. This is not just a threat to the events promoted in this edition but also to our local pubs and restaurants. At this point in time I’m unsure of what will come next so I’ve chosen to publish all of the events, you can then follow up on anything that is of interest to you with the organisers. Some may need to be cancelled entirely others may rescheduled for a future date. The next edition of this magazine is also uncertain until nearer the time, when print services and deliveries can be fully confirmed. So keep this edition safe for future reference, it may need to last a little longer than usual. We may be entering a period of reduced contact with one another but all those domestic tasks and projects will still be there when we find ourselves the other side of this situation. Lastly, if anyone is in need of a good pick-meup why not join the Rock Choir online! See details inside. Until next time stay safe.

The Garden Some annual flowers with delicate colourful blooms are tougher than they look, and many of these are easy and inexpensive to grow from seed. Consider wallflowers, petunias, evening primrose, Echium, flax, calendulas, sweet William, clarkia, Californian poppies, Lavatera trimestris and candy tuft.

Windswept Gardening Creating a garden in a windswept spot is possible by making it easier for plants to survive, but there are also plants that are tougher than you might think. So what should you do, and what should you grow?

If you don’t want a hedge, erect something like a fence, which allows some wind through. Avoid solid windbreaks like walls, as they can cause turbulence and worsen the wind and cold on the garden side of the barrier.

If possible, choose miniature or dwarf varieties of plants – as they are closer to the ground, they enjoy some protection from the prevailing winds and so have the chance to put on a decent show.

Make the most of those areas of your garden that are less exposed, and don’t ‘waste’ those prized positions on tougher plants.

Creating a windbreak – such as hedge – gives a great improvement. Native hedging plants including hawthorn, blackthorn, guelder rose, wild rose and some field maple are available for planting bare root at a very reasonable price. It will take a few years for a small, new hedge to get established, so in the meantime erect a man-made barrier such as some hurdles.

Many bulbs are hardy or low to the ground, so consider crocus, chinodoxa, anemone, Iris reticulata, cyclamen (hardy forms only) or dwarf narcissus such as Tete-a-Tete and Peeping Tom. A number of rock plants do well in exposed gardens. Try Campanula portenschlagiana (a creeping form of the pretty bellflower), Sempervivum (the rosette-forming house leeks), low-growing hebes, Erigeron daisies, Helianthemum and Veronica spicata.

Sow or plant perennials for colour that will return year after year. There are often some bargains to be had at this time of year when small pots of perennials are available from most garden centres for only a few pounds each. The stately hardier form of Yucca filiamentosa (related to the popular houseplant) adds structure and impact; also consider the New Zealand flax (Phormium), Sedum spectabile (the ice plants), Phlomis, Lavatera maritima, Kniphofia caulescens (a form of red-hot poker), Centranthus ruber, Japanese anemones, Eryngium, Agapanthus and Euphorbia characias. For a little more height and longer-term structure then a few shrubs are a welcome addition to a windy or exposed garden. Many of the delicate flowered Cistus do well: Fuchsia magellanica, Euonymus fortunei, Escallonia, Elaeagnus and the dwarf species of Cotoneaster such as Cotoneaster horizontalis should fit the bill. What is Eco Design 2022? Eco Design 2022 is the stove industry’s response to the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) Clean Air Strategy, and is a Government backed and European Wide programme, the aim of which is to improve air quality and reduce pollutions/emissions. It will set regulations to achieve those goals for all stoves. Only stoves complying with Eco Design 2022 will be sold and installed within the UK from 1st January 2022. The new legislation will be written in to UK Law and is not affected by Brexit. A number of stoves are already compliant with Eco Design 2022 and will bear this logo:

The Key Areas of Eco Design 2022 Limiting the Sale of Polluting Fuels :-

Update Legislation and Smoke Control Zones :-

Burning any wood produces Particulate Matter, known as PM, the amount of PM depends on how the fuel is being burnt. Wet wood and inappropriate fuel reduces the efficiency of stoves and leads to high emissions. Despite this being widely known and being contained in the usage instruction manuals, many people burn wet wood or inappropriate fuel – possibly because it is cheaper than the seasoned fuel. There is legislation the government is bringing in to restrict this. The correct wood to burn should have a moisture content of less than 20%, seasoned hardwoods are preferable to softwoods, as some softwoods produce a larger amount of smoke and do not burn for as long.

Smoke Control Zones are already in existence, but councils have differing ways of adhering to them. The government are creating a cohesive national approach and councils will be given greater power to implement legislation. Further information will be available when the final report is published.

Free Surveys

Improving the efficiency of stoves:By 2022 all solid fuel stoves must be at least 80% efficient and meet strict emissions criteria. The Stove Industry have already been working the targets and criteria laid down are met. 10

Love your Harley-Davidson? So does Grizzly’s Grizzly’s Custom Bikes in Folkestone has been dubbed the Harley rider’s ‘hidden gem’ – a longestablished independent specialist known for its great work and competitive pricing. Started in 1995, the new owner took over two years ago and now specialises in custom builds, performance upgrades and makeovers – as well as servicing - to give your bike a whole new vibe for a fraction of the cost. “The only limit is your imagination,” says owner Paul, who rides a custom Softail Slim. “New pipes, engine rebuilds, custom paintwork, staged upgrades. You name it, we’ve done it - as well as simple troubleshooting and repair work. And if the bike’s not running we can come and pick it up.”

Last year one of Grizzly’s unique builds was chosen to exhibit at the premier event for bikers, The Bike Shed Show in London. The company has also featured recently in the prestigious Built and Backstreet Heroes magazines. Paul works alongside specialist Harley-Davidson mechanic and keen rider Will Simmons, who’s also a qualified MOT inspector. Both love the process of working with fellow riders and the conversation that ultimately leads to an improved bike - from a Stage 1 upgrade (or higher) to a full redesign, depending on budget. Just ring for a chat and come in for a coffee to kick off the riding season with a fresh new look to your Harley-Davidson.

Keep Britain Singing with Rock Choir • ROCK CHOIR ANNOUNCE LIVE DAILY SING FOR THE ENTIRE UK PUBLIC TO JOIN IN WITH #KeepBritainSinging • ROCK CHOIR WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP TEACHING 32,000 OF ITS MEMBERS THROUGH LIVE INTERACTIVE REHEARSAL SESSIONS Rock Choir is the largest contemporary choir of the UK and remains unique with over 32,000 Members participating in approximately 400 local communities across the UK. With coronavirus gripping the country and with many of their Members in isolation, Rock Choir Founder and Creative Director, Caroline Redman Lusher, has announced how Rock Choir will ‘Keep Britain Singing’. Rock Choir is known for its unique formula that leads to a natural high and change of mood experienced by its Membership on a weekly basis and confirmed by a singing experiment featured on BBC2’s Trust Me I’m A Doctor. Rock Choir is built on an uplifting ethos of family, fun, friendship and community spirit and for many thousands taking part, it’s a lifeline! Not only does Rock Choir improve lives, but some Members have reported that they’ve come off antidepressants, found new confidence in themselves and discovered pure happiness. With the entire UK public facing isolation, the natural and immediate step was for the Rock Choir Team to find a way to support every individual and family across the UK to offer them a daily boost of Rock Choir. The current and future well-being of the general public and the Rock Choir Members is now the biggest priority for Rock Choir and with many individuals now going into isolation, it was important to come up with a project that would benefit everyone. Therefore Rock Choir are encouraging the whole country to join with them for a daily fun sing-a-long-of uplifting contemporary pop songs via their Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/TheRockChoir/

14

From Monday 23rd March, Rock Choir will go live from their Facebook page at 3pm and will commit to this event EVERY DAY until their normal rehearsals can resume. The Rock Choir Team of talented musicians and singers will take part in leading the singing and will rotate in front of the camera on a daily basis to deliver an uplifting, positive song via Facebook Live. Each individual or family in isolation will be encouraged to join in and sing with the Leader along with the thousands of Rock Choir Members who will be excited to be singing every day too. The Rock Choir team is committed to making this event happen every day to give everyone some stability and a routine until the self-isolation guidelines are lifted. Rock Choir has positively impacted not just its Members but their relationships around them too; their family, friends and colleagues. With their new ‘Keep Britain Singing’ project, the hope is that everyone will continue to feel better and stronger the more they sing. Each song will be announced the day before each session is broadcast and the activity will include the mass sing-a-long as well as fun extras, singing tips and ideas to help everyone connect with music over this period of time. Song requests and interaction will also be very welcome! Rock Choir has also announced to their Members today that they will be teaching their normal choir rehearsal schedule using live interactive teaching sessions online. All Members will be asked to login and participate at their normal rehearsal time and will therefore be able to interact with one other

The Home and their Leader. None of the current Rock Choir Membership will miss out on any of their sessions and this is vital for morale and wellbeing in these testing times. Caroline Redman Lusher Comments – “The well-being of our Members is and will always be our absolute priority and now we have the whole country to consider too! We have 32,000 ‘Rockies’ in Rock Choir who, along with the rest of the general public, will each be facing uncertainty. Some will be scared, some lonely and others will be in isolation potentially for a long length of time. As well as committing to running our normal rehearsal schedule we are encouraging them and the public to join us daily and benefit from the well-being effects of Rock Choir whilst we ask that our Rockies reach out to their family, friends and neighbours to all become part of a much bigger community of support. We have been hearing some inspirational stories from our Rockies who are already true community heroes during this crisis. I implore everyone to join in and sing with us each day. We can then contribute to everyone’s

daily routine and be a reliable and constant source of support for our Members and the UK community. We would also love any of our celebrity supporters to get in touch and consider giving up five mins of their day to get involved with our Keep Britain Singing campaign. It would be such a morale booster for our Rock Choir community! We know that singing boosts our levels of Endocannabinoids – neurotransmitters thought to be the cause of the ‘natural high’. As well as giving us a ‘buzz’, these chemicals are linked to improving mood and reducing anxiety and stress. This is essential to our well-being and we aim to try and replicate these feelings with our online singing activities!” Log in and join in the daily ‘Keep Britain Singing’ Live show from 3pm from Monday 23rd March - https:// www.facebook.com/TheRockChoir/

American nursing homes and hospices, Billy Agnew, chief executive of virtual reality producer Viarama, told Forbes.com: “We’ve had mountain climbers climbing mountains, we’ve had artists with dementia who have had to give up their life’s work, and we let them draw, paint and sculpt in VR.”

It’s the age of ‘Age Tech’ If you regularly watch television there’s a good chance you’ve come across an advert in which a young man sets up a smart speaker for his grandfather. The grandson extols all the virtues of the device, but the older man – busy reading his newspaper – seems unimpressed. However, when the grandson visits again, he is greeted by the sound of the smart speaker playing a song he had been singing the day before, as he cleaned his grandad’s house. Far from ignoring the new gadget, his grandfather has used the voice command utility to set up the song as a surprise for his grandson. The advert seems to suggest that even the most techaverse users can be persuaded to engage with new technology.

18

While it may be that some senior citizens are reluctant to use innovations that might make their lives more convenient, statistics show that older people are starting to catch up with younger users. Last year the

Office for National Statistics reported that internet use in the 65 to 74 age group increased from 52% in 2011 to 83% in 2019. That statistic is set to grow over the next decade, paving the way for a new age of ‘Age Tech’. This is a term coined to cover technology that benefits older people, either by improving their quality of life or helping them stay healthy. Here are just a few innovative ideas that have the potential to transform our lives as we age: Virtual reality A virtual reality (VR) headset can generate realistic images, sounds and sensations that simulate a user’s physical presence, either in a virtual environment or in the real world. Using a VR headset it’s possible to explore almost anywhere on earth, from historic sites to caves, mountains to coastal settings. VR also allows you to play games and simulate everyday activities. After a recent trial of VR in

Wearables Wearable devices such as smart watches have been popular for several years now. These lightweight, portable devices – used to monitor eating, exercise and sleep patterns – are now employed in medical settings to improve health. Last year the NHS announced that British people at risk of type 2 Diabetes (with an average age of 58 years) would be fitted with wearable technology to monitor their exercise levels. This is just the latest in a series of wearable tech innovations that include blood pressure monitors and devices that can sense when the wearer has fallen. People with dementia can also benefit from wearing watches fitted with a GPS tracker, so carers can quickly locate them if they have wandered away from home. Smart speakers Voice-controlled smart speakers can be connected to almost every appliance in the house, allowing you to dim lights, switch on the oven or play music without getting up from your chair. They can also be used to make calls, check the weather, listen to podcasts or the news,

make up a shopping list and answer essential questions. For those of us with less than perfect memories, the smart speaker can also be used to set reminders: prompting the user to take their medicine at the right time, or tune in to a favourite radio broadcast or TV show.

many families, particularly if family members don’t have time to check on them every day. Remote monitoring systems can take away a lot of the stress by simply observing normal patterns of behaviour within the elderly person’s home and issuing an alert when something unusual occurs.

While smart speakers are currently popular with younger people, it takes very little imagination to see how this technology could benefit older, less mobile householders, particularly as the speaker functions are activated by voice, with no need for fiddly manual controls.

These systems operate through a series of remote sensors, picking up the resident’s movements, together with the home’s ambient temperature, without the need for invasive cameras or microphones. In addition, carers and guests can log in and out of the system, allowing the family to see exactly when visitors have called and how long they have stayed.

Remote monitoring An aging relative living alone can be a source of worry for

The Home

advert, some senior citizens may be reluctant to engage with new technology, but the benefits of Age Tech are potentially life-changing. At a time when the future of social care looks uncertain and many care homes are struggling to survive, innovations such as these may provide the crucial support we need to continue to live independently and well in our own homes. Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors on their way to becoming Dementia Friendly accredited

Last month, a few of our Solicitors were fortunate enough to have a Dementia Friends training session from Liz Taylor at Dementia Friends UK, and wow, what an insightful session it was. We'll be rolling out these sessions to all our branches across Kent and can't wait to proudly wear our 'forget me not' pin badges as an accredited dementia friendly business.

So, what does it mean to be a dementia friendly business? Usually organised into 3 categories, a business who is recognised as dementia friendly makes special provisions to ‘People’ including training and awareness for staff and supporting employees affected by dementia; ‘Processes’ including client support and adequate signposting and provision of information; and ‘Places’, ensuring that not only a physical work environment is appropriate for people with dementia, but also engaging in community initiatives to ensure people affected by dementia feel they are supported. Statistics from the Alzheimer’s Society in their most recent brochure really demonstrates the importance for all businesses to be aware of the impact that dementia can have across the whole of society. Over 40,000 people under the age of 65 have dementia, with a total of 850,000 in the UK. Only one third of these live in a care home, meaning the majority of those living with dementia are still living their everyday lives within the community. In 2013, the cost of dementia was an eye-watering £26 billion; however, with dementia friends training being a completely free initiative, there is no reason for businesses not to get involved. 28

Quite aptly, the day we had our training on was also 'Random Acts of Kindness Day' - if you see someone struggling, please offer them a helping hand, whether it be counting change for them or assisting them through a doorway. One phrase that really stayed with us from the session was 'All change, but no change'. You don't need to change the way you act around people with dementia or patronise them in anyway, simply treat them like any other human, be kind and be understanding. It is not only our Private and Elderly Client Service, including Wills, Trusts and Probate, that will benefit from being able to offer a dementia friendly service, but our complete list of departments, including conveyancing, family law, professional and medical negligence and company & commercial. To see our full list of services, please visit www.pengelly-rylands.co.uk or contact us on 01580 762248 to speak to a dementia friendly solicitor. We look forward to working with you!

Rhubarb Meringue Pie A delicious variation on the classic, this will be a perfect dessert for a special family meal or Sunday roast. Serve with single cream or a spoonful of crème fraiche.

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling and cooling | Serves 8 FOR THE PASTRY CASE AND FILLING 350g shortcrust pastry Flour, for dusting 400g rhubarb, trimmed and cut into short lengths 150g caster sugar Zest and juice of ½ orange 2 medium egg yolks 2 tbsp cornflour 20g unsalted butter FOR THE MERINGUE 4 medium egg whites 225g caster sugar

30

TIP

For the pastry case, roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. Prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, Gas Mark 6. For the filling, spread the rhubarb in a large shallow roasting tin and sprinkle with 50g of the sugar and the orange zest and juice. Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes until tender. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and leave to cool. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and fill with ceramic baking beans (see Tip). Bake for 10 minutes then remove the lining and beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Remove from the oven and set aside. Place the rhubarb in a large non-stick pan with the rest of the caster sugar, egg yolks, cornflour and butter. Heat gently, stirring all the time, until the mixture comes to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring, until thickened. Leave to cool then spread in the pastry case. To make the meringue, whisk the egg whites in a clean, grease-free bowl until stiffly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, a spoonful at a time, to form a firm, glossy meringue. Spoon over the rhubarb filling and swirl with the back of a spoon. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve warm or cold.

If you don’t have ceramic baking beans then use dried beans or lentils instead.

The Book Nook

From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month… Alice – Christina Henry If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. This is definitely not a story for children however; it’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come. On the Up – Alice O’ Keeffe Sylvia dreams of a better life, away from her council flat. A home with wisteria around the door, a garden and no noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, her financial situation and the challenges of parenthood are putting a strain on her relationship with her partner, Obe. While Sylvia is desperate to leave her estate behind, when it’s threatened she finds herself ready to defend it. A warm humorous book about family, community and modern life.

32

The Mercies – Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. But this is the seventeenth century, and independent women are viewed with suspicion and distaste, particularly by new commissioner Absalom Cornet. Based on real events, The Mercies is a gripping, thought-provoking read. Peaky Blinders: The Real Story of Birmingham’s most notorious gangs – Carl Chinn If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own great-grandfather. Unlike the show, the book doesn’t glamourise the men or the deeds. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and unworthy of respect”. Instead, the book provides a well-researched, fascinating insight into historical gang violence.

How to Plant a Garden – Matt James Itching to get back out in your garden now spring is here? Or perhaps you’re somewhat reluctantly determined to tackle the weeds? Either way, this book might help to inspire you. There’s advice on choosing the right plants for different situations and plenty of guidance on soil conditions, shady areas, plant combinations and more. It’s not a new release, so you might even be able to order a copy from your local library. Three Hours – Rosamund Lupton Masked gunmen attack a school in Somerset. They shoot the headmaster but make no demands. Who’s behind the attack; who’s safe; who’s the target? A heart-racingly tense thriller with characters you’ll be desperate to protect. Three Hours will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading ‘just one more page’ long into the night.

Easy Eco

Trying to do your bit for the planet? Switching to ecofriendly toiletries is an easy place to start…

By Kate Duggan

There are plenty of planet-friendly beauty brands to choose from these days, but that certainly wasn’t the case when Weleda launched back in 1921. The brand’s original focus on helping the body to heal itself with plants still holds true today. Ethics are firmly embedded throughout the company. Growers receive a fair wage, all products are at least vegetarian and Weleda’s buildings are powered with renewable energy. Weleda also believes in giving back so supports a range of initiatives, from wellness retreats for cancer patients to wildflower planting schemes. Hero products include its multi-award winning Skin Food and the gorgeously scented Wild Rose range. See www.weleda.co.uk. British brand Neal’s Yard Remedies (www. nealsyardremedies.com) has been making and selling sustainable skin and hair care products for almost forty years. Ingredients are organic where possible and all are sustainably sourced. Its factory runs on renewable energy, including from its own solar panels. The company helped to get plastic microbeads banned from cosmetic products. It’s funded the protection of more than one million square metres of tropical forests and the Bee Lovely range raises money for bee-friendly charities. The brand is aiming to have protected fifty million bees by the end of this year. Eco-cleaning brand Splosh also sells hand wash and shower gel. You get bottles with your first order and refill pouches from then on. The refills are superconcentrated – you pour a small amount of the gel into an empty bottle and top it up with water. Once

you have eight empty pouches, you can post them back to Splosh for free to be recycled. It’s a great way to save plastic if you prefer liquid wash to bars of soap. As well as saving plastic, you’ll also save money as the refills work out a good bit cheaper than leading eco brands. (They also perform a lot better in my opinion.) All Splosh products are cruelty-free, vegan-friendly and designed to be gentle to the environment. See www.splosh.com. Green People (www.greenpeople.co.uk) mainly uses organic ingredients, has never tested on animals and will plant a tree for every order over £40 in 2020. All packaging can be recycled, but the company is planning to move all of its products to renewable sugar cane packaging over the next couple of years. The brand donates 10% of its net profit to charity; previous recipients include the Marine Conservation Society and a children’s hospice. Try the award-winning Vita Min Fix 24 Hour Cream, which is packed with nourishing plant and seed oils that your skin will lap up. One of the easiest ways to buy sustainable toiletries and cosmetics is to head to a shop or website that specialises in them. Holland and Barratt is a good choice if you want a high street shopping experience, or try ww.lovelula.com, www.biggreensmile.co.uk, www.naturisimo.com or www.ethicalsuperstore.com.

Kid’s Corner

Kid’s Corner might want to help your teen set up their privacy controls and discuss what they should do if they’re trolled or contacted by someone they don’t know.

Keeping children safe online While children and teenagers are often far more tech savvy than us parents, their lack of life experience makes them vulnerable. One in eight 12-15 year olds experiences cyber bullying, and a growing number are being groomed online.

Check parental controls Digital devices usually come with parental controls that you can enable. Popular children’s online games, such as Roblox, also tend to give parents a choice of settings. You can prevent your child from accessing certain features, for example. You may want to adjust the settings so that your child can’t chat to strangers, and regularly check your child’s list of friends to make sure they haven’t added people they don’t know in real life. Talk to your child Ask your child to show you what they do when they’re playing their favourite digital games. You might also want to set up your own account, so you can explore

a game to see whether there’s anything that concerns you. Make sure your child understands that they should never send photos to people they meet online, or give out personal details, such as their real name, email address or school name. Talk to your child about how easy it is for people to lie when they’re online. Above all, make sure your child knows that they can come to you if they experience anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, without you getting cross. Social media Most social media sites only allow accounts to be set up by people aged 13 and up. However, they don’t require proof of age, so it’s down to parents to enforce the rules. Messaging apps and social media are useful for keeping in touch with friends but can be exploited by bullies and predators. Again, talk to your child about how to stay safe. You

Setting limits Most tablets allow you to set a limit for how many hours they can be used for each day. It’s more difficult to set time limits for older children, however, who may need to use laptops or tablets to do their homework. At the very least, you may want to agree times that your child isn’t allowed to use devices, such as meal times, the hour before bedtime and so on. Try to lead by example. If you’re constantly scrolling through social media feeds, it’s going to be hard to convince your child not to do the same. Further info For guidance on keeping children safe online, check out www.net-aware.org.uk and www.saferinternet.org.uk. www.internetmatters.org also has a wealth of useful information, including what to do if your child is bullied online. If you’re not sure how to set up parental controls, or want advice on privacy settings or social media, call the O2/ NSPCC’s online safety advice line on 0808 8005002.
