Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the summer edition and phew, what a scorcher we’ve had so far! I’m so glad we didn’t go abroad this year, at the time we went away temperatures across Europe were breaking records at well into the 40’s - too hot! The weather in Cornwall was perfect though, enough for a sun tan but not uncomfortable, and as we usually to go in June it’s not too busy. We returned from holiday just in time to catch that amazing finish to the Cricket World Cup! Now I’m not a sporty person at all but my husband is, and as a result, over the years, I’ve been coaxed into watching the odd Rugby match here and there, but never in a million years did I think that Cricket could ever hold my attention. It was unbelievable! I didn’t understand a lot of it but it was exciting! I’m afraid there’s a long way to go though before I’ll watch Football!

Add Some Vertical Interest

4

Whether your garden is large or small, long, wide or a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too…

Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themselves are good looking and can be a feature in their own right, so don’t necessarily go for the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal.

So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden?

you install in your

Position an arbour it so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem a lot larger and more interesting.

Any vertical structure garden makes for a new planting opportunity Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient: scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy. If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-

draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour – when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released. Arches and arbours are available in a wide range of materials, but by far the most popular are those made from wood or metal. To a large extent it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one

KILBYS PEST CONTROL

By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install. To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to several local garden centres or taking a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, ladybirds and other great natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, planters, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Mowgli by Montgomery Vets

H

ello everyone, Mowgli here. Hope you have all had a good month. We have - as ever- had a very busy month. We have been joined by a delinquent thrush! The thrush- initially poor thrush as he was ill- was found on his back outside the front door. He was only a baby and seemed to have become dehydrated. We all watched him out of the window for a while but sadly no parents came to sort him out so in the end he had to be scooped up and given fluids and TLC. At this point none of us expected him to survive. He couldn’t stand, didn’t seem to know which way up was and was very confused. However, we reckoned without the sheer determination of this little thrush, who came to be known as Nowell. Within 12 hours Nowell was resident in the utility room shouting his head off every time he thought he needed feeding. Although he was a chick he was really at an age he should have been able to feed himself but he showed no inclination to do so. Josh and Nowell became firm friends as he learnt how to feed him cat food with forceps. Nowell started to look better and better!

food. Various relatives had to be drilled with the cat food and forceps technique and get used to being dive bombed by a hungry thrush. Eventually it was Grandad Andy who sorted this problem out- said the thrush was being indulged- and sat with Nowell on the patio and patiently got him to take the cat food from lower and lower until he was eating it from a dish on the floor. At least at this point all we had to do was fill a bowl for Nowell several times a day. Then came the day that Nowell didn’t come to stay in the utility room overnight. A lot of worry and all of us peering out of the window at first light. He was there- waiting for breakfast! These days Nowell doesn’t come for food. He has joined the other garden birds. But he has a characteristic voice and shouts ALL day long. When we all wake up. When we are going to sleep. Almost anytime during the day we can hear him…

Mowgli

A

t this point I would just like to tell you all how unfair it is about the cat food situation. When I was a kitten I was fed the most marvellous pouch food. Then Clive and Jane came to pick me up and Clive took one look at the food I was being fed, sniffed a lot and that was the last I saw of it. I also came with a note saying that I really liked sharing a kebab and chips with humans. Clive’s eyebrows disappeared into his hairline at this and I knew I would never be eating kebab and chips again…. All my life I have been fed very worthy, apparently very expensive food. What I crave is the very cheap stuff! Which is what I think the thrush was being given. I did complain and was given a large box of pouches to get through as well as my normal dry food. But they were the posh pouches and I want the cheap ones! Humans are just so unfair!!

A

nyway, back to Nowell. He eventually graduated to day release. He was set free during the day but asked to come back into the utility room at night. He would come and perch nearby and fly into the door as soon as anyone opened it. So we told him he was welcome to stay as long as he wanted. He still hadn’t really got the idea of feeding himself and would fly up to anyone in the garden and demand

Summer Reads

Pull up your sun lounger, pour yourself an ice-cold drink and lose yourself in a good book. Little Darlings – Melanie Golding Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from postpartum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling page-turner that keeps you guessing. Vegan One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouth-watering image. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Heather Morris If you haven’t yet read the

12

biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read. The Perfect Wife – JP Delaney Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller. Cleaning the Gold – Karin Slaughter and Lee Child Looking for a quick read? This collaboration between bestselling writers Karin Slaughter and Lee

Child is just 80 pages long. It brings together two of their bestknown characters – Jack Reacher and Will Trent. Will is undercover investigating Jack when they realise there are bigger fish to fry. A perfect slice of fast-paced action to enjoy while you’re waiting for your flight. The Farm – Joanne Ramos Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thought-provoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.

• Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Maple Glazed Pork with Mediterranean Veg Kebabs

These chunky meat kebabs with a sweet sticky glaze are perfect for a barbeque or al fresco supper served with warmed flatbreads and salad.

Makes 8 Ingredients 750g lean pork fillet, cubed Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp dried oregano 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large red peppers, deseeded and cubed 2 courgettes, sliced 2 red onions, peeled and cubed 6 tbsp maple syrup 4 tbsp tomato ketchup

TIP TIP

1 tbsp mild mustard

28

Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Toss to coat then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight. Thread the pork, pepper, courgettes and red onion onto 8 long metal skewers. Cook on a preheated barbeque or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred. Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.

Marinating the meat in lemon juice and oil will make it extra tender. Add some chopped chilli for a spicy touch or add 2 tbsp light soy sauce, if liked.

Why Doctors are Prescribing Mindfulness Mindfulness is increasingly recommended by doctors for mental health Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what exactly is it – and who and how can it help? Mindfulness is… • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling, considering what events sparked these thoughts and feelings, and how they might change your behaviour. • Paying attention to all the physical and emotional sensations you’re experiencing. How can mindfulness help, and who will benefit from it? Today, many of us lead very busy lives and rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ to things and often missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting, and separating yourself, even if just momentarily, from past regrets and future worries by focusing on the present. It can help you gain a greater awareness of the drivers of your behaviours and anxieties, and so help you get better control of them.

30

“It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. Mindfulness can help you appreciate things that you previously took for granted, like the taste of your favourite sandwich or the birdsong as you leave for work. And by becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can begin to see patterns and recognise those that aren’t helpful, and recognise

prevent depression in people who have had three or more bouts of depression in the past. It’s also increasingly recommended by doctors for those suffering chronic conditions or pain (which can be the cause of ongoing stress), and for those suffering from stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can help with insomnia, too. Practising Mindfulness So how do you practise mindfulness? You can practise it anytime, anywhere, but it seems to work best if you make the effort to do it Mindfulness is increasingly regularly, and try to choose a time recommended by doctors for each day to practise it, in addition to occasions when you practise it mental health ‘on the go’. It could be: on the way to or from work; at lunchtime; first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Experiment to find signs of stress and anxiety earlier. By recognising negative thought the time most convenient and patterns, we can help ourselves useful for you. learn to not let them overwhelm Reminding yourself to take us or lead us into a spiral of notice of your thoughts, feelings, negative, dominating thoughts body sensations and the world or negative actions that make the around you is the first step to situation worse (one of the main mindfulness. principles of Cognitive Behaviour The NHS recommends: Therapy (CBT)). Noticing the everyday: focusing Mindfulness is something we on the details of what’s going on can all benefit from. However, around you. from a medical point of view, Trying something new: sitting in mindfulness is now officially a different seat in meetings or on recommended by the National the bus, or going somewhere new Institute for Health and Care for lunch, can also help you notice Excellence (NICE) as a way to the world in a new way.

Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: trying to view them dispassionately. “It might be useful to remember that mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them as they come and label them. “I’m worried about my Dad’s health.” “This is stress; I’ve got a busy week and I’m worried I won’t fit everything in.” “I’m anxious about my exam.” You’ve probably heard the adage that often our fear of something is worse than the thing itself. By being aware of your fears and concerns, you may be able to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the problem on which they’re based. Freeing yourself from the past and future An important facet of mindfulness is the realisation that worries about the past or the future can dominate your thoughts and blight your present, stopping you from enjoying the time you have now. If you realise that you’ve been reliving negative past experiences or are caught up in worries about the

future for several minutes, try taking a few moments to focus yourself back in the now, and appreciate the day, hour and minute you’re in. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, where you focus on your breathing and your body, bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www. bemindfulonline.com, or you can find a local teacher: bemindful.co.uk/learn-mindfulness. and general loss of pleasure in everyday life, it’s possible they are suffering from a condition called dysthymia. Also known as ‘Persistent Depressive Disorder’ and closely related to depression, this condition can last for years and, thanks to its undramatic symptoms, often goes undiagnosed.

My partner’s lost in the past Do you listen to Spotify while your partner still enjoys scratchy cassette recordings? Do you bristle each time he or she switches on the Yesterday channel, or counts out loose change instead of using a contactless card? Age affects people in different ways and if you’re a forwardlooking person who is willing to embrace change, it can be frustrating when your partner seems happier living in the past. If you can both laugh off your differences and set them aside, there’s no problem, but if your partner’s behaviour starts to affect your lifestyle as a couple, it could be a red flag for your relationship. At 56, Stephen Adebusi-Jones is two years younger than his wife Mary, but she feels his attitude to life is typical of someone much older.

“Steve always wanted to hear the latest band, experiment with different foods and travel to new places,” says Mary. ”But all that stopped after he turned forty five. These days he prefers to stay in, listening to the same music he played when he was young.

He even moans when I suggest something different, like trying out a new recipe.” That’s a familiar story for Jamie Barber, who has lived with his

Nostalgia can become a kind of safety blanket partner Mimi for the past twentyfive years. “Mimi’s interest in Sixties nostalgia began when she started buying and selling vintage clothes and jewellery online,” Stephen explains. “She used to enjoy trawling charity shops and online auction sites for vintage buys, but now she just watches reruns of 1960s films and TV shows on YouTube.” It can be hard to understand how a partner who was once positive, optimistic and adventurous could lose those qualities as they age. While it’s easy to accuse them of being ‘stuck in a rut’, a psychiatrist may take a different view. If your partner is displaying symptoms such as low energy

A person with dysthymia might suffer from low self-esteem, show little interest in daily activities and seem irritable and ‘down’ much of the time. Avoiding social activities, not getting minor tasks done and losing concentration are also signs of this condition. The good news is that it can be relieved by a combination of talking therapy and medication. If you believe that your partner’s mental health is at risk, you should encourage them to contact a GP. Alternatively you could find help from Age UK, which runs a free counselling service throughout the UK. Call Age UK’s helpline on 0800 678 1602 to locate a counsellor near you, or visit their website at ageuk.org.uk. Whoever came up with the wise old adage “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift; that’s why they call it the present!” seems to have understood the importance of looking forward, rather than living in the past. If you can communicate that message to your partner, there’s a chance it could transform both your lives for the better. By Kate McLelland
