He has appeared in the beautiful form of this Bhāgavatam just to make a bridge whereby materially conditioned souls can cross the otherewise insurmountable ocean of repeated birth and death. śrīmad-Bhāgavatam has twelve cantos, which correspond to the twelve different parts of Kṛṣṇa’s divine form. The first and second cantos are Lord Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet. The third and fourth cantos are His lotus thighs. The fifth canto is His lotus navel. The sixth canto is His chest and torso. The seventh and eighth cantos are His lotus arms. The ninth canto is His throat. The tenth canto is His beautiful lotus face. The eleventh canto is His forehead, and the twelfth canto is His crown.”

Srimad-Bhagavatam “O supremely blissful Mädhava! The nectar is coming from Your lotus feet. Drinking that nectar, I blissfully sing ‘Hari! Hari!’ Taking the name of Hari, I am binding a raft on which Lord Jagannätha will ferry me across this ocean of material existence. May my mind always remain at the lotus feet of that Lord Jagannätha who has very large round eyes. In this way, I call out, ‘Alas! Kåñëa!’ and give up my life. dharmaù projjhita-kaitavo’ tra paramo nirmatsaräëäà satam vedyaà västavam atra vastu çivadaà täpa-trayonmülanam çrémad-bhägavate mahä-muni-kåte kim vä parair éçvaraù sadyo hådy avarudhyate’ tra kåtibhiù çuçrüñubhis tat-kåsaëät “Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhägavata Puräëa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhägavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyäsadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realisation. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhägavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.1.2)

nigama-kalpa-taror galitaà phalaà çuka-mukhä amåta-drava-saàyutam pibata bhägavataà rasam älayam muhur aho rasikä bhuvi bhävukäù “The Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the essence of all Vedic literatures, and it is considered the ripened fruit of the wishfulfilling tree of Vedic knowledge. It has been sweetened by emanating from the mouth of Çukadeva Gosvämé. You who

O thoughtful devotees, as long as you are not absorbed in transcendental bliss, you should continue tasting this Çrémad-Bhägavatam, and when you are fully absorbed in bliss, you should go on tasting its mellows forever.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.1.3)

anarthopaçamaà säkñäd bhakti-yogam adhokñaje lokasyäjänato vidväàç cakre sätvata-saàhitäm “The material miseries of the living entity, which are superfluous to him, can be directly mitigated by the linking process of devotional service. But the mass of people do not know this, and therefore the learned Vyäsadeva compiled this Vedic literature, which is in relation to the Supreme Truth.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.7.6)

yasyäà vai çrüyamäëäyäà kåñëe parama-püruñe bhaktir utpadyate puàsaù çoka-moha-bhayäpahä “Simply by giving aural reception to this Vedic literature, the feeling for loving devotional service to Lord Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, sprouts up at once to extinguish the fire of lamentation, illusion and fearfulness.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.7.7)

Srimad-Bhagavatam “Çrémad-Bhägavatam is the spotless Puräëa. It is most dear to the Vaiñëavas because it describes the pure and supreme knowledge of the paramahaàsas. This Bhägavatam reveals the means for becoming free from all material work, together with the processes of transcendental knowledge, renunciation and devotion. Anyone who seriously tries to understand ÇrémadBhägavatam, who properly hears and chants it with devotion, becomes completely liberated.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 12.13.18)

artho ‘yam brahma-süträëäm bhäratärtha-vinirëayaù gäyatré-bhäñya-rüpo ‘sau vedärtha-paribåàhitaù “The meaning of the Vedänta-sütras, the full purport of the Mahäbhärata, the commentary on Brahma-gäyatré, and the fully expanded knowledge of the Vedas are all present in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam.” (Garuòa Puräëa, cited in Caitanyacaritämåta, Madhya-lélä 25.143)

sarva-vedetihäsänäà säraà säraà samuddhåtam “The essence of all Vedic literature and all histories has been collected in Çrémad-Bhägavatam.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.3.41)

sarva-vedänta-säraà hi çré-bhägavatam iñyate tad-rasämåta-tåptasya nänyatra syäd ratiù kvacit “Çrémad-Bhägavatam is declared to be the essence of all Vedänta philosophy. One who has felt satisfaction from

’kåñëa-bhakti-rasa-svarüpa’ çré-bhägavata täte veda-çästra haite parama mahattva “Çrémad-Bhägavatam gives direct information of the mellow derived from service to Kåñëa. Therefore Çrémad-Bhägavatam is above all other Vedic literatures.” (Çré Caitanya-caritämåta, Madhya-lélä 25.150)

cäri-veda-upaniñade yata kichu haya tära artha laïä vyäsa karilä saïcaya “Vyäsadeva collected whatever Vedic conclusions were in the four Vedas and 108 Upaniñads and placed them in the aphorisms of the Vedänta-sütra.” (Çré Caitanya-caritämåta, Madhya-lélä 25.98)

yei sütre yei åk-viñaya-vacana bhägavate sei åk çloke nibandhana “In the Vedänta-sütra, the purport of all Vedic knowledge is explained, and in Çrémad-Bhägavatam the same purport has been explained in eighteen thousand verses.” (Çré Caitanya-caritämåta, Madhya-lélä 25.99)

jévera nistära lägi’ sütra kaila vyäsa mäyävädi-bhäñya çunile haya sarva-näça “Çréla Vyäsadeva presented the Vedänta philosophy for the deliverance of conditioned souls, but if one hears the commentary of Çaìkaräcärya, everything is spoiled.” (Çré Caitanya-caritämåta, Madhya-lélä 6.169)

Srimad-Bhagavatam “yäha, bhägavata paòa vaiñëavera sthäne ekänta äçraya kara caitanya-caraëe (Çré Caitanya-caritämåta, Antya-lélä 5.131) “Go and approach a vaiñëava-gaura-priya, a dear devotee of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Study and hear Bhägavata from him and completely take shelter at the lotus feet of Caitanya Mahäprabhu — ekänta äçraya kara caitanya-caraëe. Without Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s mercy no one can understand ÇrémadBhägavatam.”1

bhägavata ye nä mäne, se—yavana-sama tära çästä äche janme-janme prabhu yama “One who does not accept Çrémad-Bhägavatam is no better than a mleccha or yavana, and Lord Yamaräja punishes him birth after birth.” (Çré Caitanya-bhägavata, Ädi-khaëòa 1.39)

(2) patita-pävana-hetu tava avatära mo sama patita prabhu nä päibe ära

Songs & Verses “Your incarnation is just to reclaim the conditioned, fallen souls, but I assure You that You will not find a greater fallen soul than me. Therefore, my claim is first.”

(3) hä hä prabhu nityänanda, premänanda sukhé kåpäbalokana koro ämi boro duùkhé “My dear Lord Nityänanda, You are always joyful in spiritual bliss. Since You always appear very happy, I have come to You because I am most unhappy. If You kindly put Your glance over me, then I may also become happy.”

(4) doyä koro sétä-pati adwaita gosäi tava kåpä-bale päi caitanya-nitäi “My dear Advaita Prabhu, husband of Sétä, You are so kind. Please be merciful to me. If You are kind to me, naturally Lord Caitanya and Nityänanda will also be kind to me.”

(5) hä hä swarüp, sanätana, rüpa, raghunätha bhaööa-juga, çré-jéva hä prabhu lokanätha “O Svarüpa Dämodara, personal secretary of Lord Caitanya, O six Gosvämés; Çré Rupa Gosvämé, Çré Sanätana Gosvämé, Çré Raghunätha Bhaööa Gosvämé, Çré Gopäla Bhaööa Gosvämé, Sré Jéva Gosvämé, and Çré Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé! Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (6) doyä koro çré-äcärya prabhu çréniväsa rämacandra-saìga mäge narottama-däsa “O Çréniväsa Äcärya, successor to the six Gosvämés! Please be merciful to me. Narottama däsa always desires the company of Rämacandra Cakravarté.”

(1) ‘gauräìga’ bolite habe pulaka-çaréra ‘hari hari’ bolite nayane ba’ be néra “When will that opportune moment come to me when there will be shivering of the body as soon as I chant Lord Gauräìga’s name? And after the shivering, while chanting Hare Kåñëa, when will there be tears pouring down from my eyes?”

(2) ära kabe nitäi-cänder koruëä hoibe saàsära-bäsanä mora kabe tuccha ha’be “When will that day come when Lord Nityänanda’s causeless mercy is bestowed upon me so that my desire for material enjoyment becomes very insignificant?”

Songs & Verses (3) viñaya chäriyä kabe çuddha ha ‘be mana kabe häma herabo çré-båndäbana “When my mind is completely purified, being freed from material anxieties and desires, then I shall be able to understand Våndävana and the conjugal love of Rädha and Kåñëa, and then my spiritual life will be successful.”

(4) rüpa-raghunätha-pade hoibe äkuti kabe häma bujhabo se jugala-périti “When shall I be very much eager to study the books left by the six Gosvämés? One has to learn of the conjugal loving affairs of Rädhä-Kåñëa through the teachings of these six Gosvamés.”

(5) rüpa-raghunätha-pade rahu mora äça prärthanä koroye sadä narottama- däsa “Narottama däsa always wishes to understand this conjugal love under the direction of the six Gosvämés.”

(1) gauräìgera duöi pada, jär dhana sampada, se jäne bhakati-rasa-sär gauräìgera madhura-lélä, jär karëe praveçilä, hådoya nirmala bhelo tär “Anyone who has accepted the two lotus feet of Lord Caitanya as their only asset knows the true essence of devotional service. If anyone gives submissive aural reception to the pleasing and sweet pastimes of Lord Caitanya, then immediately his heart becomes cleansed of all material contamination.”

(2) je gauräìgera näma loy, tära hoy premodoy, täre mui jäi bolihäri gauräìga-guëete jhure, nitya-lélä täre sphure, se jana bhakati-adhikäré “Anyone who simply chants the name of Çré Kåñëa Caitanya will immediately develop love of Godhead. I offer him all congratulations by saying, ‘Bravo!’ If anyone feels ecstasy and cries by simply hearing the transcendental qualities of Caitanya Mahäprabhu, he at once understands the eternal loving affairs between Radha and Kåñëa.”

Songs & Verses (3) gauräìgera saìgi-gaëe, nitya-siddha kori’ mäne, se jäy brajendra-suta-päç çré-gauòa-maëòala-bhümi, jebä jäne cintämaëi, tära hoy braja-bhüme bäs “Anyone who has understood that the associates of Lord Caitanya are eternally liberated souls immediately becomes eligible to enter into the abode of Kåñëa, the son of Nanda Mahäräja in Våndävana, in his next birth. If anyone understands that there is no difference between Gauòa-maëòala, the place in West Bengal wherein Lord Caitanya had His pastimes, and the transcendental abode of Çré Våndävana-dhäma, then he actually lives in Våndävana.”

(4) gaura-prema-rasärëave, çe taraìge jebä òube, se rädhä-mädhava-antaraìga gåhe bä vanete thäke, ‘hä gauräìga’ bo’le òäke, narottama mäge tära saìga “Anyone who takes pleasure sporting within the waves of the ocean of Lord Caitanya’s distribution of love of God immediately becomes a confidential devotee of Çré Çré RädhäMädhava. It does not matter whether such a devotee is in the renounced order of life or whether he is a householder. If he is actually taking part in Lord Caitanya’s saìkértana activities and actually understanding what it is, then such a person is always liberated. Narottama däsa aspires for his association.”

oà ajïäna-timirändhasya jïänäïjana-çaläkayä cakñur unmélitaà yena tasmai çré-gurave namaù

tapta-käïcana-gauräìgi rädhe våndävaneçvari våñabhänu-sute devi praëamämi hari-priye “I offer my respects to Rädhäräëé, whose bodily complexion is like molten gold and who is the Queen of Våndävana. You are the daughter of King Våñabhänu, and You are very dear to Lord Kåñëa.”

väïchä-kalpatarubhyaç ca kåpä-sindhubhya eva ca patitänäà pävanebhyo vaiñëavebhyo namo namaù “I offer my respectful obeisances unto all the Vaiñëava devotees of the Lord. They can fulfill the desires of everyone, just like desire trees, and they are full of compassion for the fallen souls.”

namo mahä-vadänyäya kåñëa-prema-pradäya te kåñëäya kåñëa-caitanyanämne gaura-tviñe namaù “O most munificent incarnation! You are Kåñëa Himself appearing as Çré Kåñëa Caitanya Mahäprabhu. You have

yad advaitaà brahmopaniñadi tad apy asya tanu-bhä ya ätmäntar-yämé puruña iti so ’syäàça-vibhavaù ñaò-aiçvaryaiù pürëo ya iha bhagavän sa svayam ayaà na caitanyät krñëäj jagati para-tattvaà param iha “What the Upaniñads describe as the impersonal Brahman is but the effulgence of His body, and the Lord known as the Supersoul is but His localised plenary portion. Lord Caitanya is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kåñëa Himself, full with six opulences. He is the Absolute Truth, and no other truth is greater than or equal to Him.” (Caitanya-caritämåta, ädi-lélä 1.3)

rädhä kåñëa-praëaya-vikåtir hlädiné çaktir asmäd ekätmänäv api bhuvi purä deha-bhedaà gatau tau caitanyäkhyaà prakaöam adhunä tad-dvayaà caikyam äptaà rädhä-bhäva-dyuti-suvalitaà naumi kåñëa-svarüpam “The loving affairs of Çré Rädhä and Çré Kåñëa are transcendental manifestations of the Lord’s internal pleasuregiving potency. Although Rädhä and Kåñëa are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally. Now these two transcendental identities have again united, in the form of Çré Kåñëa Caitanya. I bow down to Him, who has manifested Himself with the sentiment and complexion of Çrématé Rädhäräëé although He is Kåñëa Himself.” (Caitanya-caritämåta, ädi-lélä 1.5)

Songs & Verses ä-pämaraà yo vitatära gauraù kåñëo janebhyas tam ahaà prapadye “The most munificent Supreme Personality of Godhead, known as Gaurakåñëa, distributed to everyone, even the lowest of men, His own confidential treasury in the form of the nectar of love of Himself and the holy name. śrīmad-bhāgavataṁ purāṇam amalaṁ yad vaiṣṇavānāṁ priyaṁ yasmin pāramahaṁsyam ekam amalaṁ jñānaṁ paraṁ gīyate tatra jñāna-virāga-bhakti-sahitaṁ naiṣkarmyam āviṣkṛtaṁ tac chṛṇvan su-paṭhan vicāraṇa-paro bhaktyā vimucyen naraḥ Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the spotless Purāṇa. It is most dear to the Vaiṣṇavas because it describes the pure and supreme knowledge of the paramahaṁsas. This Bhāgavatam reveals the means for becoming free from all material work, together with the processes of transcendental knowledge, renunciation and devotion. Anyone who seriously tries to understand Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, who properly hears and chants it with devotion, becomes completely liberated. — Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 12.13.18
