DCA Board Meeting Minutes

DACHSHUND CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. BOARD MEETING MINUTES

Saturday, January 29, 2022 Embassy Suites Hotel, Irving, TX

Meeting called to order at 9:00 am CT by President Carl Holder.

Members Present: Carl Holder, Cheryl Shultz, Cindy Niles, Debby Krieg, Denny Van Hook, Georjan Bridger, Janet Schwalbe, Kathy Lockyer, Ken Levison, Larry Sorenson, Monika Martin, Sandy Arnold, Wally Jones, Dan Burke & Vicki Spencer

Members Absent: Connie Fisher, Fran Colonna, Lorraine Simmons, Randy Eltringham

Guests Present: Ken Hagmueller, Lexa Richmond

Approval of Minutes:

Minutes from the Sept 25 & Oct 25, 2021 Board meetings (Zoom) were approved without objection.

Ratification of email votes on the Rally Trophy updates, changes to the National Specialty Rosettes and the updated Job Description for the DCA Raffle Chair were approved without objection.

Report of Officers:

President: Carl Holder

Carl welcomed new Board Member Monika Martin (VA).

All agenda items to be discussed at meetings must be turned in or distributed to the Board at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting date.

Trophy Report from Sheila Parish shows 7 outstanding Absolute Plaques that have not been sent out due to lack of information on the recipient.

Ken recommended a recognition to thank Sheila for her many hours of continuing work with the Trophy Program (plaques, medallions & pins). The Board will publish a Resolution in the next Newsletter. Sandy will resume work on an article on the history of the plaques, medallions & pins.

Dates for the 2023 & 2024 Contracts to hold the DCA National Specialty at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO are: 2023: March 18-19 Earthdog, March 20-24 Conformation/Obedience/Agility 2024: May 18-24

AKC now gives permission for clubs to hold up to 4 specialties per year in conformation, not including hosting the National Specialty. This may negate the need for “Parent Club” specialties in the future.

Denise Siemssen reported that Anne Radice has a group of items from Iris Love’s Estate that will be donated to DCA for the Raffle/Ways & Means. She will transport to DCA in St. Louis.

Meet the Breeds. DCA has committed to sponsor 1 per year. There are 6 planned across the US in 2022 but some may be postponed.

Follow up on correspondence regarding status of Pedigree Research. Sandy will contact Cyndy Senff to see where we are with this project.

MOTION: Begin using Groups.io platform for ongoing DCA Board communication.

MOTION PASSED.

MOTION: Set up & begin using Groups.io platform for sending ‘blast’ emails to the DCA Membership.

MOTION PASSED.

MOTION: The Board designates both Secretaries (Recording & Corresponding) to be able to post messages sent out to the entire membership.

MOTION PASSED.

Treasurer’s Report:

Ken Levison

Financial Reports were emailed to the Board on 1/16/22. There was discussion & clarification on what part of the DCA Ways & Means was donated to the DCA Health & Welfare Trust. Ken stated that “any excess of revenue over costs for Ways & Means will be donated to the DCA H&WT.” The Standing Rules will be updated to add the change in phrasing for clarity.

MOTION: Pass Annual budget from what Ken submitted to Board on 1/16/22.

MOTION PASSED.

AKC Delegate’s Report:

Larry Sorenson Larry reported:

AKC is continuing to try to hold “Meet the Breeds” in various cities around U.S.

Clubs will soon have option to divide Bred-by Exhibitor class into puppy and adult.

MOTION: DCA will offer divided Bred-by Exhibitor classes, Puppy & Adult at the National Specialty, in that order.

MOTION PASSED.

Triple Champions. Dual Champions must be a conformation (bench) champion and a field champion. Triple Champions have to include an additional Championship that is competitive and something related to what the breed was bred for/to do.

Regarding ongoing issue of showing neutered dogs in conformation, Cheryl says Larry needs to submit the Board’s request to be able to show 7+yr old neutered dogs in the Dual Champion Class to Gina @AKC (the AKC Secretary).

AKC PAC donations-Doing LOTS of good work. States 501(c)(7) organizations cannot donate, but individuals can. Larry says this group needs recognition and donations.

Larry has spoken to Mary Olich Nie to look into a semen bank for dachshunds and to be a representative to AKC Purebred Preservation Bank. Larry would serve as an assistant to navigate the DCA part.

Carl asked for a Board Member to chair the Nominating Committee and Kathy Lockyer nominated Janet Schwalbe. The following members were nominated to be on the committee:

Kaye Atkinson (TN), Anne Carson (GA), Ken Hagmueller (TX) & Jan Oswald (CA). 1st alternate is Trudy Kawami (NY), 2nd alternate is Jordan Wallis (OR), 3rd alternate is Mike Smith (NC).

Standing Committees:

Committee Job Description—Sandy sent out an updated ‘Job Description’ for the DCA Raffle Chair. This was a combined effort with Denise Siemssen, Monika Martin & Sandy to more accurately describe what the Raffle Chair does and how they work with Ways & Means.

Proposal was sent to the Board in Groups.io. Committee Chair Vacancies. Carl took nominations for Breeder Referral Chair and Cindy Niles was voted in as the new chair.

Archives:

Vicki reported that she & Ken went through previous list of items and without objection, the Board okayed their list of items to go to the DCA Raffle/Silent Auction/Ways & Means.

Good Sportsmanship:

Janet reports that the committee is developing a brochure and will have information at the DCA Education Fair.

Judges Education/Illustrated Standard—Janet asked about clarifying the criteria and process for approving Parent Club Mentors. Ken stated that the Board approved an updated application and process in 2020 that is in the Standing Rules.

Membership Chair:

Georjan emailed the Board 12 new member applications.

The Board voted to accept Shelly Baldwin (OH), Ava Hata (CA, Junior), Lyle & Donna Jenkins (ONT), Brenda Longoria (OK), Cindy McManus (GA), Adam & Madeline Peterson (NC), Debra & Albert Rowe (PA), Stacey Sullivan (CA), Derine Winning DVM (ND) into membership.

Georjan emailed the Board an updated Membership Report as of 12/31/21. She reported that the committee met & discussed ideas, including a survey. They are exploring ideas for distribution.

Newsletter:

Carl will get Lynne’s contract, which needs to be renewed, to send to the Board for discussion and voting.
