Her home was the site of the original schoolhouse in Ridgefield, CT, hence,the kennel name “Schoolhouse.” The home was filled with family treasures, the dogs were in the kitchen, the kitchen table was used as a desk...complete with covered ‘shoe boxes’ of index cards with the latest wins of dogs throughout the country. Judy kept the statistics for Kennel Review, before computers. What a tribute to Judy to know that Emi, now married to Hernan Pedraza, will carry on the kennel name and breeding program, and, once again, is dedicated to breeding great dachshunds.”

Linda Brennan is, by all accounts, a virtual celebrity in the AKC world of dog obedience. The weekend before this class, she and her Labrador Retriever, Heart, had just been crowned Champion of the Westminster Kennel Club Masters Obedience Trial at Madison Square Garden – for the fifth consecutive time!

In the last 30 or so years I have had the privilege of working with the breed that has stolen my heart, these precious dachshunds. No matter the size, or coat, our multi-talented, loving, energetic dachshunds are truly a wonderful breed. They are only limited by the time and energy we want to put into working with them. We are so fortunate to have such a versatile breed. I know our dogs are capable of much more than we ask of them and most of them would love to show us how much they can do! Why not give yours a chance?!

BARTONELLA BACTERIA DETECTED IN HEMANGIOSARCOMA TISSUES Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a very high prevalence of Bartonella bacteria in tumors and tissues – but not blood samples – taken from dogs with hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels. The work further supports the connection between persistent infection and some types of cancer and adds to the evidence that Bartonella can remain and thrive, undetected, within tissue. Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an aggressive, deadly cancer that arises from cells lining the blood vessels. It is responsible for two-thirds of all heart or splenic tumors in dogs, and is most common in medium-sized and middle-aged dogs. Since HSA usually cannot be diagnosed without major abdominal surgery, most HSA remains undetected until it has reached an advanced stage, resulting in a one-year survival rate of only 12 to 20%. “There are clear precedents for the involvement of bacterial infections in tumor development,” says Ed Breitschwerdt, Melanie S. Steele Distinguished Professor of Medicine at NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine and

corresponding author of a paper describing the work. “Given the established links between chronic inflammation and cancer, we wanted to determine whether chronic infection of blood vessels due to bacteria could be a contributing cause of this cancer.” Breitschwerdt and colleagues from NC State looked at tumor tissue, non-tumor tissue and blood samples from 110 dogs with HSA from across the U.S. They screened both the tissues and the blood for Bartonella, Babesia, and Mycoplasma, three bacteria associated specifically with blood infections. Bartonella DNA was amplified and sequenced from 80 of the dogs with HSA: it was present in 34% of tumor tissue and 63% of non-tumor tissue, but appeared in none of the blood samples. Mycoplasma DNA was only amplified from 5 of the dogs and Babesia wasn't detected in any dog. “Research in recent years has confirmed that persistent infection with or inflammation caused by stealth pathogens is a risk factor for developing cancer later in life,” Breitschwerdt says. “With the exception of Helicobacter pylori, the emphasis on evaluating the relationship between infection and cancer has focused on viruses. But intracellular bacterial pathogens such as Bartonella may also play an important and previously uninvestigated role.

“Bartonella is a stealth pathogen – it can ‘hide’ in the cells that line blood vessel walls, which is part of what makes it so difficult to detect," Breitschwerdt says. “This work adds more evidence to the connection between infection and cancer risk, and demonstrates that molecular testing of whole blood samples does not rule out the tissue presence of this pathogen. Future studies are needed to investigate whether Bartonella infection can be a cause of HSA. Our team will be focusing on creating more sensitive diagnostic testing as part of this effort."

Trisha Brenner was shocked when her active, five-year-old Weimaraner named Charlie collapsed on a walk in November of 2018. “Charlie had been healthy, except for some allergic dermatitis symptoms he experienced as a young dog,” she states. Those symptoms resolved after a diet change recommended by a board-certified veterinary dermatologist. Unfortunately, the same diet that helped his skin disease was now believed to be the cause of Charlie’s collapse. Trisha shares that “Charlie was diagnosed with suspected dietrelated dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that led to congestive heart failure.” Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) occurs when the heart muscle becomes weak and loses the ability to contract normally and pump blood throughout the body. A genetic predisposition is suspected since some breeds, such as Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, and Boxers, are more commonly affected. Deficiencies in some amino acids (such as taurine and carnitine) are believed to influence the disease in some breeds such as Boxers and American Cocker Spaniels. However, in the past few years, veterinarians began to diagnose DCM more frequently and in breeds such as Golden Retrievers and mixed breeds not typically predisposed to this disease. A common thread among affected dogs was the consumption of foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients. This led the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to

initiate an investigation into the potential link between DCM and these foods in July 2018. The veterinary community, along with the FDA, has been compiling and analyzing data on diet-related dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs to get a handle on the frequency, severity, and cause of this disease. While dog-owners are anxious for answers, the problem is complex, and the cause is likely multifactorial. Several research studies are underway to explore these factors, including a multi-institutional, prospective study supported by the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF).

Weimaraner-lover Trisha learned about the AKC Canine Health Foundation while doing her own research into how she could help Charlie and how she could educate and empower other dog owners affected by diet-related DCM. “I was pleasantly surprised by the very diverse portfolio of research being funded by CHF,” she states. “Their work on so many different diseases will benefit all dogs.” Trisha has taken to social media to spread the word about dietrelated DCM and the important research underway to unravel this complex problem. She remains optimistic and grateful for the support she has received from the Weimaraner Club of America and other dog enthusiasts. With intensive treatment, Weimaraner Charlie has surpassed the expectations of his original prognosis. His owner, Trisha, encourages everyone to participate in the search for answers to diet-related DCM and other canine health concerns. Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest human and veterinary health challenges of our time. Over recent years, antimicrobial resistance has become an increasingly serious concern in veterinary medicine, having a large impact on canine health and welfare. Antimicrobial resistance has been identified in numerous species of bacteria. Those of greatest concern to canine health include Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. Commonly identified antimicrobial-resistant forms of these bacteria include methicillinresistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which are frequently identified in dogs and people, respectively. Where is it? Antimicrobial resistance occurs throughout the world. Some areas and populations (including dog groups) may have greater problems with resistance due to current antimicrobial use practices, lack of regulations and inattention to existing antimicrobial use guidelines (see Resources). continued next page... ANTIMICROBIAL (ANTIBIOTIC) RESISTANCE IN DOGS continued from page 7 Who gets it and can people get sick with it? Antimicrobial-resistant infections have been identified in many animal species and presumably all animal species and people are at risk. Individuals, including dogs and people, who are immunocompromised (immune system is not functioning properly) are at greatest risk for antimicrobial-resistant infections and especially prone to severe disease. Many antimicrobial-resistant infections occur in people. MRSP is most commonly found in dogs and MRSA is most commonly found in people. However, these bacteria can be passed between dogs and people, as well as other species. Some organisms, such as MRSA, primarily spread in people who then can pass them to dogs. All of the antimicrobial drug classes that we use to treat infections in dogs are also used in humans. As a result, we need to be aware of the potential impact of veterinary antimicrobial use on human health. Antimicrobial resistance that develops in our dogs can impact human health and vice versa. How is it spread? (Transmission & Infection risk) Bacteria with antimicrobial resistance typically behave the same as their counterparts that are antimicrobial sensitive (killed by commonly used antimicrobials). These antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are spread in the same ways as their sensitive counterparts. This includes spread through: • Direct contact between a dog and an animal or person infected with or carrying the antimicrobial-resistant organism;

• Contact between a dog and something (e.g. environmental surface, object, clothing, hands) contaminated with the antimicrobialresistant organism. An example of this might be a dog sneezing onto the floor and later another dog licking that area of the floor and becoming infected. What should I look for? (Signs of disease) In general, signs of antimicrobial-resistant infections are identical to antimicrobial-sensitive infections. Suspicion of an antimicrobialresistant infection includes lack of response to appropriate therapy, worsening of clinical signs while receiving therapy, and recurrent infections. Specific signs of disease vary with the diseasecausing bacteria and location of infection. Some of the most common signs are those with skin and ear infections (e.g. licking, scratching at these locations), urinary tract infections (e.g. frequent, blood-tinged urination, difficulty urinating), and infection at a site where the dog recently had surgery. However, animals (and people) can carry these antimicrobial-resistant bacteria on and within their bodies (e.g. on skin; in nose, throat, gastrointestinal or urinary tracts) without signs of disease. Despite not causing clinical signs of illness, these bacteria can still be passed to other animals and people. If a dog carrying these bacteria then becomes sick, is injured or has surgery, these bacteria can cause an antimicrobial-resistant infection. How is it diagnosed? Your veterinarian will diagnose an antimicrobial-resistant infection based on the dog’s history (e.g. recent use of antimicrobials), clinical signs, examination findings and confirmation through bacterial culture and susceptibility. Culture and susceptibility testing involve sending a swab or tissue sample from the affected area on the dog to a diagnostic laboratory for culture (bacterial growth). This test will determine which species of bacteria are present, if any, and their susceptibility to various antimicrobials so that the veterinarian can make the best choice for treatment. In resistant infections, a specialist in infectious disease may be consulted to assist with therapy. What is the treatment? Will my dog recover? Based on the dog’s history, clinical disease and culture and susceptibility results, your veterinarian will prescribe the most appropriative antimicrobial. If an antimicrobialresistant infection is identified, treatment may involve a more expensive

antimicrobial, one with a higher risk of adverse effects, or a longer duration of treatment. Most often, this treatment will work, and your dog will completely recover. However, sometimes the antimicrobial may not stop the infection or there may be few reasonable antimicrobial options available. In these cases, you will need to work closely with your veterinarian to find the drug or approach that is able to successfully treat your dog or reduce the impact of the infection. In rare cases, there are no effective treatment options. In many cases, bacterial infections are secondary to another type of problem or medical concern, such as allergic skin disease, ear mites, urinary or endocrine problems. It will be important for your veterinarian to diagnose and effectively treat these primary problems to ensure that secondary bacterial infections associated with them can be successfully treated and help prevent reoccurrence. In general, dogs without clinical signs that are found to have antimicrobial-resistant bacteria present on or in their bodies should not be treated. Doing so (i.e. treating a dog without clinical disease signs) can result in an even more resistant bacteria and is unlikely to clear the organism. How can I stop this from happening to my dog and other dogs? We cannot completely prevent our dogs from getting an infection, or an antimicrobial-resistant infection, but there are steps we can take to help reduce these risks. • Some dogs are at a greater risk of infections than others. Talk to your veterinarian about your dog’s risks and steps you can take to reduce these in your dog. Keeping your dog healthy through proper nutrition, exercise and preventive care (e.g. vaccinations, flea/tick/worm preventives) is critical. • Be careful when and how we use antimicrobials. This includes using antimicrobials as prescribed (how much, how often and for how long) and working with a veterinarian to make these decisions. Using antimicrobials differently than instructed or those intended for a different dog can lead to antimicrobial resistance and potentially serious health problems for your dog. When prescribed, be sure to ask what steps are being taken to ensure your dog gets the best antimicrobial for their condition and to prevent an antimicrobial-resistant infection. • Only use antimicrobials when they are indicated. Many conditions or even infections may not need antimicrobials, as they are often caused by viruses, against which antimicrobials do not work, or are self-limiting (i.e. your dog’s immune system will quickly kill the organism). Examples include mild respiratory disease (e.g. mild cough, sneezing) or diarrhea in otherwise healthy dogs. continued page 10...

ANTIMICROBIAL (ANTIBIOTIC) RESISTANCE IN DOGS continued from page 8 • Antimicrobials are generally discouraged when only having antibodies for a condition without clinical signs (e.g. testing positive for Lyme disease antibodies during a routine examination) – see Resources. • Know what to look for to determine if an antimicrobial is not working as expected and immediately relay this information to your veterinarian – this could be an early sign of an antimicrobial-resistant infection. Regular hand cleaning (washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) is one of the best ways to remove disease-causing organisms and prevent spreading these organisms to your dog or to other people. Be sure to clean hands after touching someone else’s dog, or any dog that is sick or has an infection. Be sure those at increased risk of passing disease-causing organisms to your dog (e.g. those with sick dogs, working with sick dogs such as veterinary personnel) wash their hands before touching your dog. Locations where numerous dogs come

together (e.g. doggie daycare, boarding facility, groomer, breeder) or where dogs are likely to come into contact with antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (e.g. human/veterinary hospitals, nursing homes) should have an infection control program that includes animals to reduce the development and spread of antimicrobialresistant infections. Key components of this program should include cleaning and disinfection practices, hand cleaning, prudent use of antimicrobials, removal or isolation of infectious individuals, use of clothing and barriers to protect contamination of clothing and spread of organisms (e.g. gloves, dedicated work clothing). See Resources.

and outbreak management to help control the further spread of infection. The canine group setting’s veterinarian can provide this expertise or identify the most appropriate individual to do so. Immediately addressing such an issue is particularly important with larger dog group events and facilities such as kennels that house large groups of dogs together. An effective infection control program is critical to preventing and controlling outbreaks. Additional steps, such as reducing unnecessary dog-dog and person-dog contact are important in preventing transmission of bacteria and controlling an outbreak (see Resources for further information).

Outbreak management: Depending on the bacteria species and location of the infection, in most cases dogs with antimicrobial-resistant infections should not have close contact with other animals or immunocompromised people until the infection has been successfully cured. Until cured, these individuals should not go to locations where they are likely to have contact with people at increased risk for infection (e.g. human hospitals, nursing homes) or where many dogs come together (e.g. daycare, groomers, dog parks, dog shows). When multiple dogs in a group or at an event become infected, it is recommended to immediately contact someone with experience in veterinary infectious disease risk assessment

Zoonotic (Human Infection) Alert: When an antimicrobial-resistant infection is identified, based on the bacteria species involved, your veterinarian or physician may recommend additional steps to reduce spread to other animals or people, especially those who are immunocompromised or otherwise at increased risk (e.g. young, elderly). These include regular hand cleaning (washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer), discouraging close contact with the infected dog (e.g. discourage kissing the dog, discourage the dog from licking people, disallowing the dog to sleep in a person’s bed) and increasing the frequency of washing dog bedding (e.g. every few days). !

Update on the article “A Dachshund Back” by Dianna Rockwell that was published in the Winter, 2019 issue of the DCA newsletter, page 27. Her meningitis was caused by Neospora. That is a protozoan that is found in water, ground, etc., and it has become more and more prevalent in diagnosis. Texas A&M University has been given a grant to do research on Chagas by the Canine Animal Foundation. They need dogs that test positive for the disease, but are not being treated. (One reason for no treatment is that no one knows how to treat it.). I had four dogs test positive, but opted not to treat them. When I took the four to A&M they were given over $1200 of FREE heart tests and other blood tests. The study is going to last 2 years and the dogs only have to go to campus once a year. They do need dogs though. They only have about half of what they need. They are the only university doing the research.

Dr Sikes has been given a grant, by the Canine Health Foundation, to do a 2 year study on the effects of Chagas and the development of a possible vaccination or daily medication for prevention. Dogs will receive over $1200 free tests dealing with heart and blood work. They only need to keep them for 24 hours and then they return once a year. They need dogs that have tested positive for Chagas but are not being treated, because in all honesty, there is no proven protocol. For further information contact: Diana L. Excerpt from Fred Vogel’s tribute in the Canine Chronicle: “Judy and I met in January of 1977, the year before I met my wife Carol…Judy’s home was the site of the original schoolhouse in Ridgefield, CT, hence,the kennel name “Schoolhouse.” I recall meeting Tom and Peter, both vibrant kids that kept her on the run. The home was filled with family treasures, the dogs were in the kitchen, and the large kitchen table was used as a desk...complete with covered ‘shoe boxes’ of index cards with the latest wins of dogs throughout the country. Judy kept the statistics for Kennel Review, before computers became a household tool. Judy took me to my first handling class, where I met many of the members of Longshore/Southport Kennel Club, where she was a member. There was a match at Peggy Westphal’s home in Bedford, New York, that spring. I recall Judy drove me, a dachshund, and her son Peter, who was the same age as Peggy’s son, Graham. At the match, I met Peggy for the first time, as well as Charles Baris and John Hart. Peggy owned a bulldog, “Baby B,” with the Hetheringtons. Baby B crashed the match...charging the various match entrants. Typical of Peggy, chaos ensued,with much hilarity as Baby B was rounded up and returned to the house. Once Judy moved to California to work for Richard Beauchamp and Kennel Review, life adjusted. We never lost contact, but visits were a bit more infrequent, until Judy secured a job with Friskies. Friskies ultimately was bought by Purina, and Judy travelled extensively for Purina, affording us the opportunity to catch up with her. In 1986, Peggy Westphal gave us “Tommy”, who became CH Westphal’s Tomten at Brodny. We did have a litter sired by Tommy, out of Ch. Brodny’s NightLife, and gave Judy a male puppy, who ultimately became CH Brodny’s It Happened One Night. Judy showed “Gable” to Winners Dog at the 1993 DCA National. The following year, we gave Judy CH Brodny Schoolhouse Applause, “Bacall,” from the repeat breeding and, thus, our kennel name was formed. “Bacall” was Winners Bitch at the 1994 DCA National and Best of Variety at the following DCA National Centennial. Bacall was also piloted to variety wins at Westminster 1995 and 1996 by Wood Wornall. Oh, there were the Nationals and the parties...Judy shared a suite with Kaye Ladd and Jack Karcher. If the phone rang, it was answered as “Kaye, Jack, and Judy.” Kaye would send a case of wine ahead to the hotel, and Judy and I frequently were sent out for cheese and crackers and to procure our drinks of choice. Toasts were offered to all present before judging began. Then there was the infamous coffee pot for Judy’s morning coffee. I have that coffee pot here. It made many trips to hotels in New York for Westminster, so Judy could make coffee the way she liked it before beginning her day. Along the way, Judy met a junior handler, Emi Williams, and they

formed a friendship and a bond, and a love of the variety that continues. Judy and Emi had a special bond, and, over the past few years, Emi was a big help to Judy - lead breaking and showing puppies, driving with her to shows, etc. I know that, at the end of the weekend or on a Monday, Judy would call and give us a report on how Emi and our dogs did at the shows. For Christmas 2018, the three of us gave Emi the kennel name Brodny Schoolhouse. What a tribute to Judy to know that Emi, now married to Hernan Pedraza, will carry on the kennel name and breeding program, and, once again, it is three people dedicated to breeding great dachshunds.” A few words from Emi... “Judy Anderson was an icon in the sport of dogs and especially in the dachshund breed. She bred both smooth and wire dachshunds for nearly five decades, most recently along with Fred and Carol Vogel as half of “Brodny Schoolhouse.” More importantly, she was a friend. She was ever encouraging and never had a bad word to truly say about anyone. I was fortunate enough at a young age to gain her trust. My mother had purchased a standard smooth bitch from Judy’s very last standard smooth litter. This bitch became an ROMX and lived to nearly age 17. Judy then sold us my first wire, BISS GCH Brodny Schoolhouse Street Smart, as a potential juniors dog, when he was just a puppy and I was only 14 years old. While he was a typical dachshund and did not become the juniors dog I needed at the time, he was an excellent dog in the breed ring and reached #5 Wire in Breed rankings, as well as achieving multiple specialty variety wins, group placements, and a Best In Specialty Show. Vito went Best of Opposite Sex in the breed at Westminster to the wonderful “Cinders,” the year she won the Hound Group at the Garden. More importantly, I gained a friend through Vito with Judy, as well as a love for wires. We co-bred a litter together, as her breeding days became more limited and while I was still in college, but, most importantly, we shared moments. We always discussed the typical dog show gossip, but we also enjoyed our small breeding accomplishments. In our short twelve years together, we shared multiple BISS, group placements, wins at Nationals, and more. Many of my favorite dog show memories include Judy, as we traveled to many shows together and enjoyed many morning coffees and evening drinks! She also joined us for my college graduation, helped plan my bridal shower, and attended my wedding. As I look back, Judy was always there for all the big moments. I will always love and miss her, and will continue on in her honor. Thank you, Judy, for always being you.”

Fred used the poem GoodBye My Friend, by Karla Bonoff, set to music by Linda Ronstadt, as a tribute to Tommy in a 1999 DCA Newsletter. Judy and I composed the ad. It is only fitting to repeat the first two stanzas of the poem for this tribute to Judy: Oh, we never know where life will take us We know it is just a ride on the wheel And we know when death will shake us And we wonder how it will feel So, goodbye, my friend I know I will never see you again But the time together through all the years Will take away the tears It’s O.K. now Goodbye, my friend

President’s Report: Carl Holder presented a financial report for DCA 2019, which included information on conformation, obedience, Rally and Agility, showing a profit of approximately $14,000.00. A problem with the DCA 2020 Facebook page was discussed. Carl reported he understands the problem was resolved successfully and all DCA members should now have the ability to read and respond to posts. Carl reported receiving an email from a member concerning the ROM program certificates. All expressed an interest in continuing with their current committee except the chairs for Challenge Trophies and Juniors. The appointment of the 2020 Standing Committees was held until Executive Session.

Versatility Program: Sharon MacDonald submitted a report via email. All suggested changes to the Versatility Program were noted in red. At this time, the committee did not recommend adding Coursing tests, Trick Dog, the expanded CGC program or Farm Dog to the Versatility Program, nor did they recommend any AKC “Title Recognition” sports such as Barn Hunt, Diving Dogs, Flyball, Search and Rescue or Therapy Dog, the rationale being those sports are not under the direct regulation of AKC. There was a question brought up as to why Endurance Earthdog and Rally Champion (RACH) were given 9 points instead of 10. Vicki will contact Sharon and relay back to the Board Sharon’s response. A motion to accept the committee’s recommendations was postponed until the Board gets clarification.

Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl Shultz submitted correspondence dating from 5/27/19 to 10/22/19. Cheryl received an email from a DCA member with suggestions for changing dachshund field trial and earthdog judges’ requirements. Vicki will contact Tracy Freeling requesting the PEC committee review the requirements for becoming a field trial and an earthdog judge along with a request to submit their recommendations before the January Board meeting. There was a letter received from a DCA member concerning casting at field trials when there are no rabbits. Discussion followed. It was felt casting was addressed sufficiently in the rule book and no new rules will be considered. Cheryl received an email from Amy Hamernick at AKC along with application forms inviting DCA to participate in Meet The Breeds

in New York City taking place January 25th and 26th 2020. Without objection DCA will not take part in this event. Treasurer’s Report: Ken Levison emailed the Treasurer’s report to Board Members reflecting activities beginning 1/1/2019 and ending 9/30/2019. He also submitted a Budget To Actual 2019 report.

AKC Delegate’s Report: Larry Sorenson shared highlights from the September 2019 AKC Delegates meeting. He reported he has been reelected to the Parent Club Committee. He shared a concern some judges have with weighing dogs at shows due to the condition of the scales. Without objection he and Cheryl will work on a letter to be sent to AKC requesting a standardized scale that is easy to read and is stable. They will submit the letter to the three committees that deal with the use of scales. He reminded the Board that DCA has control of the dachshund photos that appear on the AKC Market Place. Photos cannot be of wins, nor have people in the photo. Membership: Georjan Bridger reported it cost DCA $10.00 extra when a foreign member pays their dues by a check from a foreign bank. Without objection Georjan will see that a line on the blue membership card will be added explaining a $10.00 cost will be added when paying with a personal check on a foreign bank. Vicki reported a concern that some members fill out the information regarding the size and variety of their dachshunds, not realizing they are signing permission for Breeder Referral to pass on their contact information to perspective puppy buyers. New Business: The 2019 All-In-One form had included information concerning trophy donations for DCA. Since this is not included on the 2020 form, this information will go in the Premium List and on the DCA Facebook page. DCA 2020 sent in a request to use the $250.00 designated for field trial trophies to go toward field trial hospitality. The Board has no objection to this. The AKC dachshund flyer sent to people registering a dachshund needs to be updated. Ken and Cheryl will work on this. Vicki will send the flyer to them in pdf form and information as to who at AKC will need the updates. To update the DCA Field Trial trophy plan language, Cheryl will send a letter to Sheila Parish requesting she strike out “Open All Age” and insert “Open” in the trophy language she sends out to clubs to be placed in their premium lists. DCA 2022 – A Board member asked if the DCA Hosting Guidelines document could be condensed. Ken Levison and Cheryl Shultz will work on creating a more condensed version of the guidelines now used and will create a brochure titled “Hosting DCA”. The brochure will be handed out at the Annual meeting. The Annual Field Trial was discussed. Lorraine Simmons will talk to her club members to see if they would like to continue this under the current name or possibly change the name, dropping the word “Annual”. and exciting to compete. It was her personal goal to win this competition for the fifth time, ending on a “high note,” as she put it, before retiring 7year old Heart from Westminster shows. The WKC Masters Obedience Championship consists of two rounds, each with AKCapproved advanced obedience exercises from Open and Utility classes. The winner is determined by the combined individual qualifying scores from both rounds. While all breeds of dogs (purebred or not) are eligible to compete in the sport of obedience, the exclusive Masters Obedience Championship is open to only the top 250 dogs in the country. Rankings are based on Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH) points earned at local trials. Judged by John D. Landis this year, the entry was limited to 30 dogs, representing the best of the best in this intense, precision-focused sport.

You Gotta Have Heart! Tips from the Westminster Obedience Champion By Karen R. Scheiner It was business as usual on Thursday morning when Linda Brennan started training students in her Utility class. The class started with attention exercises; get your dog to focus on you during heeling and signal exercises. Make it fun. Make it exciting. Of course, everyone in the room couldn’t help but notice the cake, flowers, helium balloons and, yes, the antique silver Championship trophy, unpretentiously placed to one side in the practice building. Linda is, by all accounts, a virtual celebrity in the AKC world of dog obedience. The weekend before Thursday’s class, she and her Labrador Retriever, Heart, had just been crowned Champion of the Westminster Kennel Club Masters Obedience Trial at Madison Square Garden – for the fifth consecutive time!

Winning the Big One! As if you didn’t know, the Westminster Show is like the Super Bowl of dog shows. It’s the big one! The WKC Masters Obedience Trial took place under bright lights in an expansive ring on green carpet. Photographers were clicking away. Crowds of spectators were there to watch! Linda admitted that she was “very nervous” as the “pressure was on,” although she appeared to be calm and collected. In Linda’s mind, Heart likes it better when she is nervous – she thinks that the dog finds it more intense

I am very fortunate to be able to participate with my dachshunds in Linda’s training classes. She is not only a model competitor, but Linda is also a fabulous instructor, teaching obedience exercises with the same precision needed for high scores in the ring. One of the most important things that I have learned since I’ve been training with Linda, is to break down exercises into pieces. For example, if you are going to teach the Utility “directed retrieve” exercise, do not initially lay out the gloves and send the dog from the middle of the ring! Instead, start close, by teaching the dog to pick up one glove quickly, then have him pivot and return it directly to you from a short distance. This particular practice exercise is intended to help the dog avoid making a huge circle when returning the glove to handler. In such a case, the dog may look at the other gloves – or even be tempted to pick up the wrong one. Another day, we may practice pivots to the left or to the right, without the glove at all. At every session, we break down the exercises so that the dog understands each part. Linda spends a lot of time on heeling in her classes. When she heels with Heart, it is a flawless routine; the dog’s attention never wanes, and the dog never looks away. Linda’s theory is that heeling should be fun and the dog should want more. In her class, we use treats and toys, or ask the dog do a fun “spin” when we turn corners. Again, these practice exercises are broken down into short sequences. We may do forward – fast – then release. Or forward, about turn – then release. Each release ends with a toy or a treat for the dog. Keep the dog engaged and wanting more.

Dachshunds, in particular I asked Linda to comment on training dachshunds, as several of them (including my own) are in her classes. She commented that despite their reputation, dachshunds are actually NOT the most difficult dogs to train. One thing she noted is that it may not be easy for dachshunds to sit straight and square, due to the fact that their bodies are long and low to the ground. It’s just something that dachshund owners may need to work on, more than owners of other breeds. I also asked how to handle the dachshund who spends more time sniffing the floor than paying attention to his owner. Linda suggested to play the “with me” game. This is a Top Dog game that involves teaching the dog that when the handler moves, the dog also moves; the dog learns to never leave the handler’s side. Dogs learn to pay attention to the handler, if you are consistent and make it fun with toys and treats. The dog is gradually weaned off of the toys and treats and still stays with the handler. continued on page 30...

Two new Seven-Way + titled dachshunds! I never started out to have multititled dogs, I just wanted to have fun and let my dogs have fun with me. Over the years I have tried many different venues and my dogs and I have truly had a blast! Bubbles was my first Triple Champion (Conformation, Field and Agility) and she was the very first longhaired dachshund to reach that lofty goal. She was incredibly special, but not very fertile and although she only had four puppies in three litters over her lifetime she left quite an impressive legacy. In addition to winning the Triathlon herself in 2016, two of her pups have won the Triathlon (Duskey in 2013 and Reba in 2015) and two have gone on to be Triple Champions (Reba and Dozer). Now Reba and Dozer have achieved the honor of being Seven-Way dachshunds as well. For those who don’t know, Seven-Way dachshunds must be titled in the Big Five (Conformation, Field, Earth Dog, Agility, and Obedience), then they need two additional titles which can be in any of the other AKC venues (Tracking, Rally, Trick Dog, or Scent Work).

Triple Champion Obsession’s Ruff ‘N Ready SL BN RN MXB MJB NAP NJP OF T2B2 JE TKN CGC VC, or Dozer, was my first Seven-Way dachshund. Dozer was a singleton Black and Tan pup who my daughter named Dozer because at 4 weeks of age he still refused to get up and walk as long as mommy Bubbles would deliver the milk! We really wondered if he would ever get up and move but later he earned the name Dozer by being a “Bulldozer”, always in perpetual motion and blasting his way through any obstacle. A constant smile on his face, he truly loves life and at the ripe old age of 12 he still wants to be part of the action. He did conformation because I asked him to, but it was never his “thing”. He much preferred to be in the field hunting the bunnies or even better, being on the courses running agility. A bit of a speed demon, he took fastest agility dog at Nationals one year and always gave the courses his all. Retired now, he relaxes with his best friend Crush, DC Briardach's Lucky In Love BN RE SE VC but he still loves to come to agility trials and cheer from the sidelines. You can hear him barking when I run one of the other dogs because he wants to come join in the fun! He’s also a bit of a toy thief, so if you are crated near me please watch out for disappearing toys! My second Seven-Way dachshund was Reba, GCH

non-singleton litter. There were two in that litter. Reba started out as a big sweet girl and has stayed that way. “Energetic and always willing to go” best describes Reba. I think she was the first Grand Champion Triple Champion dachshund and my highest titled dog so far, earning not only a Triple Championship but Master Earth Dog and even Barn Hunt titles. Over the years she has won the Triathlon and was the Best Field Dog in Breed at Nationals. I tried to retire her from agility last year, but she let me know that she was not ready to hang up her running shoes at the 2019 National where she missed getting fastest time by one hundredth of a second – not bad for a gal of 11 years old. She still is running agility, mostly just for fun, but she also loves to get her snuggles on the couch and watch TV at night. She still does everything at super speed, and we just aren’t telling her that she is getting older. I have been blessed in my life with the love and devotion of many dogs and many different breeds. I grew up with American and English Cockers and have had German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labs, Beagles, Maltese, Border Collies, Wire Haired Fox Terriers, and several All Americans or Heinz 57’s. Some were family pets, some were strays that wandered into my life, but in the last 30 or so years I have had the privilege of working with the breed that has stolen my heart, these precious dachshunds. I started out with miniature longhairs competing in conformation and obedience, but I moved on to Standards when I met Bubbles. No matter the size, or coat, our multi-talented, loving, energetic dachshunds are truly a wonderful breed. They are only limited by the time and energy we want to put into working with them. We are so fortunate to have such a versatile breed. I know our dogs are capable of much more than we ask of them and most of them would love to show us how much they can do! Why not give yours a chance?!

Weaves & Retrieves continued from page 24 Linda suggested that if you find you are having problems with an exercise, you may need to think about how you trained it. You may have skipped a basic element of the exercise, so go back and train through it. There are all different dogs, from all different groups in Linda’s classes. She commented, “This is a sport for all breeds. All breeds are not easy to train; that’s not a bad thing,” Linda reflected for a moment, then said, “You have two options: 1) Train the breed that you love and accept that it may not be the easiest path; or 2) If you love a certain sport, then get a dog more suited to that sport.”

Linda’s background Linda didn’t always have a fabulous Labrador Retriever on her team. Linda started out training Welsh Springers. Her first Welshie, Ruby, earned a UD; her second one, Kelsey, was more difficult and only succeeded to earn CDX. Linda’s next dog, a Golden Retriever, Kate, earned a UD and few UDX legs. She admitted that Welshies are not particularly easy to train. “For me, I will always train Welsh Springers, because I love the breed,” she exclaimed. When Linda agreed to rehome a two-year old Border Collie, named Spy, he learned fast and became her first OTCH dog. A few years later, Linda picked out Heart as a puppy and her world changed. She chose Heart because she was very precocious and always wanted to “do stuff.” Heart now is just shy of earning OTCH 19. More formally known as OTCH18 Rhumbline’s Once In A Blue Moon UDX12 OGM BN GN VER RE JH ACT1 SWN SCA CGC TKI, in every way, she has lived up to her name of being forever in Linda’s heart. Linda began training with Betsy Scapicchio, owner of Top Dog Obedience School in New Jersey, after the school opened in 1991. They have been successfully training competitive obedience since then. Linda

is one of the most organized trainers that I have worked with. It’s likely that this has something to do with the fact that she has a bachelor’s degree from NJIT in chemical engineering - no kidding! She also has an MBA from Rutgers University. Linda noted that engineers are problemsolvers, and this background may have helped her in solving issues in dog training. Linda also has a creative side, which was demonstrated last year when she presented a free-style routine with Heart at Westminster. Although the freestyle program was eliminated this year, Linda has offered to return to Westminster next year with Heart for a freestyle demonstration to include dance steps and choreography. It has been my personal good fortune to be training dogs in Linda’s classes while she is on the upswing of her training career. Linda is always upbeat and positive. She is one of the nicest people to meet, always unassuming and unpretentious.!

Some scales are adequate; however, for the most part they are difficult to calibrate and too small for the most dogs to fully stand with all four paws on the scales. Confidence of the outcome is questionable for both the judge and handler.

Passed Voted on proposed amendment to Chapter 11, Section 8-A, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Dog Show Entries, Conditions of Dogs Affecting Eligibility, which removes the requirement for an injury to have occurred for an Event Committee to disqualify a dog that has attacked a person or a dog at its event, presenting a hazard to persons or other dogs. Voted on proposed amendment to Chapter 14, Section 20, of the Rules and Standard Procedure for Pointing Breeds, which allows for a National Walking Gun Dog Championship for Weimaraners. Passed To Be Voted at the March 2020 Meeting Read on the proposed amendment to Chapter 9, Section 2, of the Rules Applying to Dog

Shows – Superintendents and Show Secretaries, which would allow for an individual to be approved as a Show Secretary for the events held by one all-breed or group club and any additional events held the same day and site as the club in a calendar year. Read on the proposed amendment to Chapter 14, Section 5, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows – Measuring, Weighing and Color Determinations When Factors of Disqualification in Breed Standards or Eligibility Under the Conditions of a Class or Division of a Class Cancellation of Awards, which eliminates the italics, rewords the section to add language to specify that all equipment must meet AKC requirements, and inserts it into the rule. The change also generalizes the wording for wickets to eliminate the need to modify in the future and clarifies expectation for several sets of wickets and scales that must be provided at all-breed, group or specialty shows. The Delegate Standing Committees are working with the other breeds that have weight requirements for a standardize scales. The tools for measuring height have seemed to get a great deal of attention and money to fix the issues. The standard wickets are used very often and are accurate, easy to use and for the most part, judges and handlers have

Dachshunds need a 16 x 10 inches surface. • Easy to calibrate for accuracy. • Easy to read. • Scales that lock on the correct weight and then easy to reset to zero. • Cost under $200.00. AKC’s New Program to encourage Bred-ByExhibitors. All bred by exhibitor owners are eligible to enter. Exhibitors will be eligible to win the Best Bred-By-Competition which will be judged after best of Breed or Variety. You must enter this class on the entry form. There will be groups and BIS competition at all-breed show with BIS Bred-By-Exhibitors receiving a free AKC litter registration. Best Bred-by-Exhibitor at a Specialty Show will also receive a free AKC litter registration. You do not need to be entered in the Bred-By-Exhibitor Class. Portrait of an Early Dachshund

e all love to claim great antiquity for our favorite breed. Someone has even speculated that the Dachshund goes back to ancient Egypt and was the companion of Pharaohs and Queens. It’s a beguiling idea, but doesn’t stand up to the Dachshund’s basic function - to hunt animals that live in heavy brush and holes in the ground. In Egypt this would have meant encountering poisonous snakes and scorpions. Hunting in ancient Egypt was a sport for kings and served as a paradigm for war. The animals hunted with dogs were fleet, desert-dwelling herbivores, like gazelles and oryx. A dog of the Dachshund type would be of little use here. Instead the thick green forests of Europe were the locale in which the Dachshund was developed as a personal hunting dog that excelled at the pursuit of small game, particularly those that lived in the earth. Our earliest clear representation of a dog that the average passer-by would call a Dachshund comes from the mid-18th century. It was painted in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (16881755), the dean of French animal painters. According to the inscription on the painting it shows Pehr, the favorite hunting dog of the Swedish ambassador to the court of Louis XV. Louis loved hunting and kept a menagerie of all sorts of animals at Versailles. Its inhabitants included Claire, a rhinoceros that was wildly

popular across Europe, an elephant, and a cassowary that Oudry also painted. Pehr was a smooth coated black and tan dog of a familiar type - he had a slender muzzle, expressive eyes framed by well-set pendant ears, and a broad chest supported by short somewhat turned-out forelegs. The tan markings on his muzzle, eyebrows and legs are a characteristic that is still required in our standard today. But it is the turn of the head and the glint of light in the eye that catches every Dachsie owner’s attention. We know that dog! Oudry painted many other dogs but Pehr’s portrait is one of the few that names the animal shown; all the other named dogs were owned by the king. The scale of Oudry’s painting is grand, 53 by 43 inches. The size of the painting indicates that this dog was very special to its owner. Pehr’s portrait also differs from the other dogs painted by Oudry. Most of these dogs were greyhounds, scent hounds or mastiff types used in packs for the royal hunts. They reflect in some way the aura of the royal court. But Pehr has nothing of royalty about him. He is a general-purpose personal hunting dog who has helped his owner find the game hung on the wall above him, a pheasant and a hare. There is no glitz, no glamor, just the dog. He looks expectantly to our right as if anticipating something, perhaps the phrase “good dog!” Pehr’s owner took the painting back to Sweden with him, another indication of his esteem for the dog – and the painting. If you want to see Pehr’s portrait today, you have to travel to Stockholm and visit the National Museum. Look for Pehr, he is accession number NM 864.

It is surprising to find a Dachsie in the circle of the French court. We think of the Dachshund as a German breed. This portrait of the beloved hunting companion of a Swedish diplomat reminds us how cosmopolitan the world of dogs was even 300 years ago. The love of a good working dog linked people across boundaries and now speaks to us across time. The personal connection with our quirky, intuitive Dachshunds and the appreciation of their good hunting nose is the same now as 300 years ago. For those whose dachshunds have earned ROM, ROMX or ROMO status, please remember that only ONE certificate is issued for each dog. If a ROM dog subsequently earns a ROMX or ROMO, a sticker for the new level achieved is sent to the owner and is placed in the designated area of the original certificate. Letters to and from the editor Hi Members and Subscribers, March 10-15th, 2020: Luckily, or not so luckily, the newsletter was just about ready to be put on press, and our daily lives came to an abrupt halt. We were able to postpone printing for a week to announce possible changes to the Nationals schedule. The outbreak of the Corona virus has changed our lives. Not only has it impacted our country and everyone in the world, but our little canine community has felt the consequences. See info on the back cover about the upcoming National specialty - and keep your fingers crossed that in the next few weeks this major health disaster is mitigated and we can get back to a fairly normal way of life. Lexa Richmond, show chairperson, and the DCA Board of Directors are doing all they can to make sure that the Nationals can go on - but we also have to consider the health of the exhibitors and their families. JUDGES EDUCATION The Dachshund Club of America will hold a Judges Education seminar and workshop at its National Specialty on Friday, May 1, 2020, at the Hampton Inn and Suites DallasMesquite, 1700 Rodeo Drive Mesquite, TX 75149. The Seminar will start at 8:00 am on Friday, May 1, with the workshop being held after Best of Variety that afternoon. Ringside mentoring will take place Friday after the Seminar and Saturday.
