Nickie was born on March 26, 2019, Just 3 months before Mike was diagnosed with Cancer. Treatments took up most of that year. Covid shut downs started as Nickie turned a year. Sadly Mike was never well enough to take her out.

The first 6 months of 2021 wasn’t too good for me so I elected to send my wild child out with Handler and Friend, Kim Haupt, for training and handling. I can’t thank Kim enough for her care of my baby.

Nickie may well be the last Bred By Summerhill Champion and I am very pleased with her. I am very thankful that we were able to breed to the gorgeous Asher and thank Vicki Spencer for her help and graciousness.

I’m sure Mike would be very happy with his baby!

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder seen in dogs, and has been estimated to affect approximately 0.75% of the canine population. The term epilepsy refers to a heterogeneous disease that is characterized by the presence of recurrent, unprovoked seizures resulting from an abnormality of the brain.

The condition can be inherited (genetic or idiopathic epilepsy), caused by structural problems in the brain (structural epilepsy), or stem from an unknown cause (epilepsy of unknown cause).

From the moment I learned the title existed, I dreamed of having a home-bred Triple Champion. Way back in 2008, on the eve of Hurricane Gustav when Gee! was conceived, little did I know the journey on which she would take me! I wanted a Triple Champion. Gee! said “Hold my beer!” Imagine That! Twelve years later, Gee! breaks records and joins the ranks of high achieving AKC Hounds.

Someone once told me “we are the sum of those who pass through our lives”. I hope that Gee! and I have touched you all in the way that you have impacted us!

Preparing an event like the Harvest Moon Classic requires a lot of planning. It was during that process that the idea of a fun charity field trial event took root. Over months, plenty of emails, texts and phone calls all the pieces came together: how many brackets, how many in each bracket, a gift for each handler, who would be judging, consecutive versus concurrent, and what charity would benefit from the event. This is a story about that event. Other things happened too that must be told: the story about the kindness and overwhelming generosity of the dachshund field trial family.

In 2006, the American Kennel Club (AKC) Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Program was established to provide each member club with an AKC Sportsmanship Medallion to award to one of its own members on a yearly basis.

In 2017, the Dachshund Club of America (DCA) Outstanding Sportsmanship Award was established and incorporated into DCA’s Standing Rules.

Jerry Cerasini was the creator of the DCA Sportsmanship Award and solicited Janet Schwalbe, Randy Eltringham and Denny Van Hook to assist him in creating a process by which this award could be given on an annual basis.

Welcome to the “Health and Welfare”segment of the Newsletter. It is hoped that DCA members will submit ideas for this section of the magazine as well as articles about experiences pertaining to the healthcare of their dogs that will be of interest to other readers.

Understanding Canine Epilepsy Introduction Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder seen in dogs, and has been estimated to affect approximately 0.75% of the canine population3. The term epilepsy refers to a heterogeneous disease that is characterized by the presence of recurrent, unprovoked seizures resulting from an abnormality of the brain. The condition can be inherited (genetic or idiopathic epilepsy), caused by structural problems in the brain (structural epilepsy), or stem from an unknown cause (epilepsy of unknown cause)1.

Determination of an appropriate treatment regimen for canine epilepsy depends on an accurate diagnosis of the type and cause of seizures, only after which appropriate therapeutic options can be identified.

Diagnosing and Classifying Canine Seizures Although classification systems exist for human seizures, there is not yet a widely accepted classification system available for seizures in dogs1. While human systems are sometimes used to describe canine seizures, this

can be problematic. Human classifications are not always clearly applicable to canines, and there is often confusion about the meaning of specific terminology in the veterinary setting. This is particularly true of those classification elements which require subjective reporting of symptoms.

For example, while dog owners may notice a specific behavior that typically precedes a seizure and is indicative of a behavioral change, there is no direct way to determine the presence of a pre-seizure event as sometimes diagnosed in humans.

Recently, the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force proposed a classification scheme for veterinary seizures, which is similar but not identical to the current human classification system. Using this system, a seizure is primarily classified according to where it begins in the brain, with specific features of the seizure used to further characterize the event.

Seizure Classification Seizure description is the most critical information needed for the diagnosis of canine epilepsies. There are two basic types of seizures, generalized and focal. Generalized seizures involve both sides of the brain at the onset, and are characterized by clinical signs apparent on

both sides of the body. Most generalized seizures manifest as bilateral involuntary muscle movements or sudden losses or increases in muscle tone. During a generalized seizure, an individual’s awareness of the environment is typically impaired, and salivation, urination and/or defecation can occur. Focal seizures originate in a discrete area of the brain, and are characterized by signs that affect a single side or specific part of the body. Focal seizures can present with abnormal motor activity (facial twitches, chewing movements, paddling of a limb), behavioral signs (fear, attention seeking), and/or changes in autonomic functions (pupil dilation, salivation, vomiting). Awareness may or may not be impaired during focal seizures. A focal seizure can spread to both sides of the brain and become generalized.

Commonly Used Terminology Automatisms – repetitive motor activity that resembles movement under voluntary control, such as lip smacking, licking or chewing Atonic seizure – a sudden loss of muscle tone lasting several seconds or more, not following a tonic or myoclonic event Cluster seizures – a group of seizures within a shorter than normal interval; clinically defined as 2 or more seizures within a 24-hour period

Focal seizure – seizures originating from only part of the brain and therefore also only affecting part of the body Generalized seizure – seizures originating from both hemispheres of the brain Idiopathic epilepsy – epilepsy without an identifiable structural cause, typically assumed to be genetic.

Interictal period – the time between seizures Myoclonic seizure – sudden, brief contractions of a muscle or group of muscles Postictal period – the time immediately following a seizure, where behavioral changes may be observed Refractory epilepsy – seizures that occur even during treatment with therapeutic doses of antiepileptic medication, i.e. the medication stops being effective Status epilepticus – a serious condition where seizures follow closely on one another without a break, or where a single seizure lasts more than 5 minutes Tonic seizure– a sustained increase in muscle tone (i.e. stiffening) lasting up to several minutes Tonic-clonic seizure – a seizure where the tonic phase is followed by shorter, clonic (jerking) movements

with a normal neurologic examination, where there are no known structural abnormalities of the brain, metabolic diseases, or toxin exposures, are often assumed to be a form of idiopathic epilepsy5. The designation of idiopathic epilepsy suggests that the exact cause of the seizures is unknown, although the condition is presumed to be inherited. However, the cause of such epilepsies can sometimes be determined, for example when seizures are the result of a specific genetic defect known to occur in certain breeds.

Structural epilepsy is the diagnosis for seizures that occur because of observable damage to or malformations of the brain. For example, structural epilepsy can occur after an

Describing Seizures When observing seizures, it is important for dog owners to keep a diary of detailed information including: 1) affected body parts 2) when seizures occur 3) how often seizures occur, and 4) how long they last. Veterinarians and owners should also pay close attention to how dogs behave immediately after a seizure. Although some animals will quickly return to normal, during the postictal period, others will experience difficulties standing or moving; blindness; sedation, anxiety or other changes in behavior.

These symptoms may last for varying amounts of time, and can affect treatment choice.

In some cases, seizures can result from exposure to a specific stimulus, such as an illness, exposure to a toxin, or problems with metabolism (reactive seizures). Any potentially precipitating events should be brought to the attention of the attending veterinarian, as such reactive seizures are not generally treated with standard anti-epileptic drugs4. Reflex seizures, which are seizures that occur consistently after a particular exposure, such as to a loud noise, a flashing light, or a more complex movement or behavior, have also been reported in dogs5.

Types of Epilepsy in Dogs It is not always possible to identify the cause of seizures in dogs; however, canine epilepsies can generally be classified into one of three categories based on etiology. Idiopathic epilepsy is defined as epilepsy without an identifiable structural cause and having an assumed genetic origin. Repeated seizures in 1-5 year old dogs

is generally complex, meaning that it involves interactions of one or more genes with each other as well as potentially with environmental factors, and this is likely true of epilepsy in dogs as well. However, the extent of inbreeding within specific dog breeds has allowed the identification of certain animals that are at particularly high risk of seizure development. No fewer than 26 dog breeds have shown at least some evidence of heritable epilepsies.

Gene mutations have been identified, many of which include a group of diseases known as neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses. These are storage disorders where mutations lead to the abnormal accumulation and storage of a cellular product within cells, eventually leading to the dysfunction or death of neurons1.

One gene for an inherited epilepsy has been identified in Lagotto Romagnolo dogs. That gene, LGI2, is similar to the previously identified human epilepsy gene LGI1, and scientists believe that a number of heritable epilepsies may have similar causes in humans and canines1.

Research into potential similarities between dog and human epilepsies has also led to the identification of several candidate genes that may predict the effectiveness of antiepileptic treatment in some breeds.

The Etiology of Epilepsy

It can also be the result of congenital malformations or a vascular event, such as a stroke5. The brain abnormalities seen with structural epilepsies can sometimes be detected using an MRI or by analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. Testing for structural epilepsy may be indicated if a dog exhibits neurologic abnormalities between seizures or if the dog falls outside the typical age range of onset for idiopathic epilepsy. Interictal changes are less common in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy.

Epilepsy of unknown cause is used to describe a condition in which a structural cause is suspected, but has not been identified on diagnostic evaluation.

Reactive seizures, seizures which occur in response to specific stimuli (such as a metabolic derangement or a toxin), are not considered to be a form of epilepsy, because they are not caused by an abnormality of the brain.

The Genetics of Canine Epilepsy A large number of genetic mutations have been associated with epilepsy in both humans and mice. In humans, the inheritance of epilepsy

The specific biochemical mechanisms that cause seizures are not yet fully understood in either dogs or humans, although seizures are known to result from dysfunction in the brain’s electrical activity. It is generally believed that epileptic seizures are caused by an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory activity in specific areas of the brain, leading to either excessive brain activity or activity that is unusually depressed. However, in the absence of structural damage or metabolic insults, the causes of such dysfunction are not clear. There is some evidence suggesting that abnormal excitatory processes may be caused by functional abnormalities in neurons, specifically mutations in the ion channels that are essential to cells’ electrical function7, but that explanation is likely to only apply to a subset of idiopathic epilepsies. Further research into the specific causes of various forms of epilepsy is still needed; current understanding is incomplete.

rom the moment I learned the title existed, I dreamed of having a home-bred Triple Champion. Way back in 2008, on the eve of Hurricane Gustav when Gee! was conceived, little did I know the journey on which she would take me! I wanted a Triple Champion.

Gee! said “Hold my beer!”

Imagine That! Twelve years later, Gee! breaks records and joins the ranks of high achieving AKC Hounds.

On May 16, 2021, Gee! earned her Rally Championship in Montgomery, Alabama. In doing such, per AKC records report, it is confirmed that Gee! is the: * 1st HOUND to achieve FIVE or more Championship titles * 1 of 7 dogs across ALL BREEDS to achieve FIVE or more Championship Titles (The other six include three Border Collies, a Papillion, a Weimaraner, and a Doberman) * 1st Dachshund to achieve Championship titles in FOUR different sports * 3rd Hound to achieve Championship titles in FOUR different sports (the others include a Whippet and a Rhodesian Ridgeback) CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES: 1 - Field Champion 2 - Breed Champion 3 - Agility Champion (x5) 4 - Preferred Agility Champion 5 - Rally Obedience Champion

Additional achievements: • DCA National Obedience and DCA National Agility winner • Field Trial Absolute • 2 Master earthdog legs (but for won’t come out of tunnel Gee!) • Tracking Dog • Utility Dog • DCA Versatility Certificate and DCA Register of Merit Excellent (when I apply) • Multiple years qualifying for AKC Agility Nationals and the AKC Agility Invitational To be authentic and brutally honest, Gee! has certainly not excelled at all these sports. Some were her favorites, some she tolerated, and some she applied herself not very much at all.

Obedience was never her favorite and her enthusiasm for this sport exponentially waned as the years passed. By 2020, we began our quest for the Rally Championship, only to be interrupted by the pandemic, cancelled training, and cancelled shows. After nearly a year delay, we resumed our quest. Rally Master is much more difficult that it appears. To earn a Rally Championship, the dog must earn 20 Triple Qs (a Q in Advance, Excellent, and Master at the same trial). The dog must also earn 300 points from scores between 90 – 100, of which 150 points must come from the Master class. Do that math … If a Club offers 2 trials per day, this could equate to 6 runs per day, 21 runs in a weekend. For a 12 year old dachshund that doesn’t much care for the sport of obedience, this was grueling for Gee! Of course, I didn’t always enter her in that many shows per weekend as we BOTH have our limitations. As my Admiral would say: “Suck it up Buttercup”.

That she did. She got it done, albeit in some protest lol.

My Message To Gee!: “Hold my beer indeed! I never, ever, imagined all of that! I loved that I could take you to be your authentic dachshund-self to bark at rats underground or chase rabbits above. I was

thrilled to be your partner as we raced around an agility course, or held the line and followed as you sniffed your way through a track to find the bits and things the humans left behind. I was so proud to be at the end of the lead as you pranced effortlessly and with attitude around the conformation ring. I appreciate that you tolerated me in obedience and rally enough to earn high titles in those sports. Goodness, I cannot even express how much I cherish the fantastic litter of FeeGee’s that you gave to all of us. It’s been a heck of a wild ride! I am now delighted to inform you that you have earned your retirement! Moving forward, we’ll enjoy walks in the neighborhood, games of hide and seek in the house, lizard hunts in the backyard, play dates with friends, unconditional fun tricks, frequent sassiness, and 100% FREE no-stringsattached food. As much as your record-breaking accomplishments are acclaimed, my most treasured thing to do is cuddle with you. It warms my soul every single time you ask to sit in the recliner with me, then lay your head upon my chest and peacefully nap. I relish those moments with such love that I hasten to flinch for fear that I will awaken you. May you have a happy and healthy retirement! Be warned though, I will still most likely dress you in some silly outfit and ask you to pose for the camera for your Facebook friends.”

Epilepsy continued from page 9 animals, and their safety profiles are somewhat variable. A single, isolated seizure is not usually seen as a reason to begin treatment with AEDs. Treatment with these drugs is usually indicated when multiple generalized seizures have occurred within a 24 hour period, a dog has had at least two seizures within a six month period, or a dog has unusual or severe signs during the postictal period9.

Once treatment has been declared necessary, the process of choosing the right drug requires balancing effectiveness and tolerability.

Although many short-term side effects can be managed by titrating medication dosages, some AEDs have the potential to cause significant adverse effects. Therefore, it is important for medications to be chosen and tested with care and to recognize that not all epilepsies are amenable to drug treatment.

Anti-Epileptic Drugs

It is well absorbed, works via multiple mechanisms, and has shown to be effective against a variety of seizure types in humans. Drug Dosing Determining the appropriate dose for an AED is an extended process. While initial dosing is determined by weight, different dogs metabolize these drugs in different ways. Therefore, a series of blood tests are often needed to evaluate serum drug levels over time in order to make certain that levels remain high enough to be therapeutic but low enough not to be toxic9.

While measuring serum levels of AEDs is a useful monitoring tool, it is not a substitute for clinical assessment when determining the appropriate drug type and dose for any individual dog.

Refractory Epilepsy Drug resistant, or refractory, epilepsy presents additional treatment challenges both in terms of dosing and in drug choice.

Refractory epilepsy is diagnosed when treatment with two appropriate AEDs has failed and occurs in 30-40% of all dogs with epilepsy6. It can occasionally be dealt with by the addition of second or third generation drugs, such as gabapentin, zonisamide, levetiracetam, or pregabalin6 in a multi-drug regimen. There are some dogs for whom seizure control may remain elusive.

Phenobarbital, a first generation AED, is one of the drugs most used in veterinary patients, because it is effective, relatively inexpensive, welltolerated, and easily dosed9. Serious side effects include blood cell loss (cytopenias) and liver toxicity. Other side effects include sedation, ataxia, and increased appetite and water consumption. At the March GGDC and NCDC specialties, she won back-to-back WB/BOW for two 5 point majors under breeder-judge Janice Corey Finney and hound expert judge Patricia Trotter at just 8 months old. Her next outing was at the Dachshund Club of America National in May, during which she finished her championship undefeated from the Bred By Exhibitor class at the first host show by going WB/BOW for another 5 point major under breeder-judge Richard Powell. She is pictured above winning Best of Variety her first weekend out as a special, under hound judge Polly Smith, over a lovely entry at 13 months old. There are limits, of course. Canine epilepsy isn’t identical to human epilepsy, and several drugs have already been shown to have differential toxicity in dogs and humans5,8,10.

Additionally, owners have a limited ability to monitor their dogs’ seizures, particularly when compared to how well people can report on their own seizures10. Still, the extent to which naturally occurring epilepsy in dogs is similar to epilepsy in humans presents a unique opportunity to study canine epilepsy as a model to help dogs and their owners alike.

AKC Canine Health Foundation Marks Epilepsy Awareness Month In November Following 4 articles by Sharon M. Albright, DVM, CCRT

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a nonprofit organization committed to advancing the health of all dogs and their owners, marks Epilepsy Awareness Month this November with over $375,000 in newly awarded canine epilepsy research grants.

Epilepsy is the most common medical neurologic disease in dogs. Despite appropriate treatment, it is estimated that 30% of affected dogs continue to have seizures, and many experience adverse effects from anti-seizure medications. To improve quality of life for affected dogs and their owners, CHF and its donors have invested more than $2.8 million since 1995 to study canine epilepsy. This includes the following research grants newly awarded in 2021: • Grant 02940: Investigating neuronal network connectivity in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy using functional magnetic resonance imaging Principal Investigator: Karen R. Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology); North Carolina State University A study to evaluate blood flow and brain activity in functionally connected regions of the brain in epileptic dogs.

• Grant 02936: Validating genetic variants underlying canine idiopathic epilepsy and exploring their functional roles in the Belgian Sheepdog and Tervuren Principal Investigator: Anita M. Oberbauer, PhD; University of California, Davis Research into the genetic variations associated with idiopathic epilepsy and the functional changes associated with them.

• Grant 02931: Assessment of frequency of seizures and antiseizure drug (ASD) efficacy by electroencephalography (EEG) for dogs with epilepsy Principal Investigator: Fiona James, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology); University of Guelph A study to evaluate the number and type of seizures and the effects of anti-seizure drugs in epileptic dogs using electroencephalography (EEG).

• Grant 02930: A dose finding study of cannabidiol in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy Principal Investigator: Stephanie McGrath, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology); Colorado State University A clinical trial to determine the dose, safety, and tolerability of CBD for seizure reduction in dogs with refractory epilepsy.

“Epilepsy has a profound impact on the lives of affected dogs and their owners,” says Mary O. Smith, BVM&S, PhD, DACVIM (Neurology), CHF Board Vice Chairman and board-certified veterinary neurologist. “Promising new

treatments are being studied with CHF funding.

Genetic studies also are underway to identify dogs at risk of developing epilepsy, to inform breeding decisions, and to identify new treatment targets. CHF and its donors are committed to supporting this innovative research.”

Through CHF’s Epilepsy Research Initiative, ongoing research and educational outreach will improve our understanding of canine epilepsy and lead to the development of more effective treatments. Addressing the Behavioral Changes of Canine Epilepsy Canine idiopathic epilepsy is the most common medical neurologic disorder in dogs.

Approximately 30% of dogs continue to have seizures despite appropriate treatment with medication. These medications can have undesired side effects such as sedation and changes in appetite. In addition to the stress of managing seizures and medication side effects, behavioral changes have also been reported in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy. All of these factors negatively impact the human animal bond and create stress for epileptic dogs and their owners.

While exploring potential new treatments for canine epilepsy, AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) funded investigators at the Royal Veterinary College are also analyzing the important behavioral changes that accompany this disease. (CHF Grant 02252: Investigating a Ketogenic Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) Supplement for the Treatment of Drug-Resistant Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy and Its Behavioral Comorbidities) As part of this study, questionnaires were completed by European owners of epileptic dogs describing their behavior before and after developing epilepsy. Results were compared to those from healthy dogs of similar age and breed. Findings published in Veterinary Record1 showed that epileptic dogs had a lower trainability score, but demonstrated more dogdirected fear and aggression, more non-social fear, and more attachment/attention seeking behavior. These changes could be caused by epilepsy itself, secondary to anti-seizure medications, or indicative of broader underlying cognitive changes. Nonetheless, this data lends support to the fact that significant behavioral changes are associated with canine idiopathic epilepsy and they must be addressed to improve quality of life for affected dogs and their owners.

Investigators also completed a multi-center clinical trial to evaluate the effect of mediumchain triglyceride (MCT) oil on seizure frequency and severity, medication side effects, behavioral and cognitive problems associated with epilepsy, and dog stress levels. Participating dogs were fed either an MCT oil supplement or a control oil for three months, took no oil for one week, and then consumed the opposite oil for three months.

Epilepsy continued from page 14 reduce seizure frequency (See A Clinical Trial of Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy). Results describing the oil’s positive impact on behavior were also recently reported in Epilepsy & Behavior.2 While taking MCT oil, epileptic dogs performed better on spatial-memory (remembering where a treat was placed in the testing room) and problem-solving tasks (the ability to access a food reward covered by a clear plastic box) and their trainability scores improved. Specifically, they were better able to learn new tricks and respond to feedback while taking MCT oil.

While only a small group of dogs (29) completed this behavioral evaluation, any improvements to cognition and behavior in epileptic dogs will support the human animal bond and improve quality of life for dogs and their owners. CHF and its donors remain committed to finding new and better treatments for canine idiopathic epilepsy. Since 1995, more than $1.4 million has been invested in exploration of the genetics underlying epilepsy and the search for new treatment strategies such as those involving the gut microbiome and dietary supplements. A Clinical Trial of Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy Despite appropriate treatment with antiseizure medications, one-third of epileptic dogs continue to have seizures. The side effects of anti-seizure medications and the behavioral changes that often accompany canine epilepsy (anxiety and cognitive decline) lead to a decreased quality of life for affected dogs and their owners. For these reasons and more, the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) and its donors are investing in research to explore new treatment options for canine epilepsy. Eating a high fat, low carbohydrate diet, known as a ‘ketogenic diet,’ has been shown to decrease seizure frequency and severity in children. There is great interest in exploring whether the same positive results can be seen in dogs. One study found an improvement in seizure control and associated behavioral conditions in dogs fed a ketogenic kibble compared to those eating a placebo kibble.1 With funding from researchers at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London are studying whether supplementation with one component of a ketogenic diet, medium-chain triglycerides, can reduce seizure

frequency in dogs. What are medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)? Triglycerides are fats.

They are named for their chemical structure containing three fatty acid chains of varied length. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) contain three fatty acids of 6-12 carbon atoms each. This contrasts with long-chain fatty acids which contain 13-21 carbon atoms and shortchain fatty acids which contain less than six carbon atoms. The Study Investigators conducted a six month, multicenter, prospective, randomized, double blinded, placebo controlled crossover trial, comparing an MCT supplement with a control supplement.2 These descriptors are important to demonstrate the scientific validity of this clinical trial: • Multicenter – Pet dogs were recruited from multiple veterinary clinics in Germany, Finland, and the United Kingdom.

• Prospective – Changes were tracked moving forward in time to avoid errors or bias associated with owners remembering what happened in the past.

• Randomized – Dogs were randomly assigned to their treatment group with no influence from investigators or owners. Eighteen different breeds, including mixed breeds, were represented in this study.

• Double-blinded – Neither the owners nor the investigators knew when a dog was taking the MCT oil or the placebo oil.

• Placebo-controlled – In addition to the MCT oil being tested, dogs were also given a ‘sham’ supplement to avoid any placebo effect.

• Crossover – Each dog that completed the trial received the MCT oil for 90 days and the placebo oil for another 90 days. The crossover design indicates that some dogs started with the MCT oil, while others started with the placebo oil.

After 90 days, they ‘crossed over’ to the alternate treatment.

Dogs continued eating their normal diet during the study. Results were based on a standardized seizure diary completed by each owner. Only grand mal seizures were counted and only data from dogs that had no changes in their anti-seizure medications during the study period were included in th evaluation.

Promising Results: Twenty-eight dogs completed this clinical trial. The MCT oil was well-tolerated and there was a statistically significant improvement in seizure control while dogs were taking the supplement. This was noted as a reduction in the total number of seizures reported each month and a reduction in the number of days each month in which a seizure occurred. Two dogs became seizure-free, three dogs had their seizure frequency reduced by at least 50%, and twelve dogs had an overall reduction in seizure frequency. Owners also reported improvement in medication side effects and quality of life while dogs received the supplement. This data will be published separately. Results provide additional support for the use of MCT oil supplement as a treatment tool for canine epilepsy. Additional study is needed in a larger group of dogs over a longer period of time, but this is a positive step in the management of canine epilepsy. Since diet and dietary supplements can impact the absorption and efficacy of anti-seizure

medications, owners should always consult their veterinarian before making any changes to the care regimen of their epileptic dog.

The Gut Microbiome and Canine Epilepsy The gut microbiome is defined as the large collection of microscopic organisms (archaea, viruses, and mostly bacteria) that reside in the intestinal tract. In both humans and dogs, these microbes play an important role in health – assisting with metabolism, protecting against pathogens, and interacting with the immune system. There is increasing interest in the microbiome-gut-brain axis, a complex system of two-way communication between the gastrointestinal tract and neurologic system. In humans, there is a known association between epilepsy and Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Alterations in one specific type of gut bacteria, known as Lactobacillus, are also suspected to play a role in several human neurologic diseases such as anxiety, depression, autism, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Lactobacillus bacteria produce GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid), an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is plausible that increased levels of Lactobacillus in the gut could lead to increased levels of GABA. This increased GABA concentration could be transferred to the central nervous system and alter brain activity.

Therefore, a robust population of Lactobacillus bacteria in the gut could be protective against the development and progression of neurologic disease.

An innovative pilot study was conducted at the North Carolina State University to study the role of Lactobacillus in canine epilepsy. With funding from AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) Grant 02249-A: Studying the Role of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Canine Epilepsy, investigators compared the fecal microbiome Lactobacillus populations of dogs with untreated epilepsy to those of healthy dogs. Thirteen pairs of dogs living in the same household and eating the same diet contributed fecal samples to this study. The fecal microbiome of housemates was similar, but there was no significant difference in the relative or absolute amounts of Lactobacillus bacteria found in untreated epileptic dogs compared to a healthy dog living in the same household. While results show that Lactobacillus may not contribute to the development of epilepsy in dogs, it may still play a role in the progression of this disease.

Additional study of more dogs and those with more severe epilepsy may reveal important information that can inform new treatment strategies for this disease.

he first time you try something you’ve never done before there is a doubt that creeps into your head asking yourself “What were you thinking?” I’m pretty sure Kathy (Johnson’s) and my brain were sounding that alarm at 7:45 AM October 12th. We had 15 minutes until entries closed and there were A LOT of empty spaces on our entry sheets….

Preparing an event like the Harvest Moon Classic requires a lot of planning. It was during that process that the idea of a fun charity field trial event took root. Over months, plenty of emails, texts and phone calls all the pieces came together: how many brackets, how many in each bracket, a gift for each handler, who would be judging, consecutive versus concurrent, and what charity would benefit from the event. This is a story about that event. Other things happened too that must be told: the story about the kindness and overwhelming generosity of

the dachshund field trial family.

We planned Paws for Fun and Friends ‘21 to be a light-hearted charity field trial event.

It was to take place on one of the 2 non trial days of the Harvest Moon Classic.

HMC is an eight- field trial cluster over 10 days at the Northern Illinois Brace Club in Roscoe, IL. The October event has taken place the last 10 years hosted by four different dachshund clubs. We would have 2 classes. One for field champions of record and the other for just about everything else. We wanted to allow young dogs, old dogs, novice dogs, even ILP dachshunds to be able to run.

not only to learn about field trials but participate in them.

We secured Cliff Shrader of Louisiana and Paul Thomas of Michigan to judge our field champion bracket and Jan DuBois and Darcey Keehn of Wisconsin for the open class. Our goal was to have a 16-dog bracket with a single elimination. The classes would run consecutively so that everyone could be in the gallery to watch and enjoy the dogs run.

So you have a new dachshund puppy! How exciting! Puppies are a bundle of love combined with unlimited energy all in one package.

Knowing that dachshunds are so versatile, if you teach basic skills early, they will always remember them. I like to think of my puppy like a brand new sponge. Once I teach her a skill, she1 will soak it up like crazy! If you have never trained a puppy or young dog for agility, then this article will give you some starting points. If you are a more experienced trainer, this article may give you some tips on retraining some skills that your dog hasn’t been able to master.

Because I do a lot of cross-training for agility and obedience, I many of the skills taught for one event usually overlap into other activities.

If you are relatively new to agility, there are essentially two forms of courses. The “Standard” courses and “Jumpers with Weaves.” In addition to offering jumps and an occasional tunnel, the Standard courses include “contact” equipment.

The Jumpers courses, as they are more familiarly known, involve jumps, weaves and sometimes tunnels. More recently, the AKC has added other games, FAST (Fifteen and Send Time), Time to Beat, and Premier courses, to keep exhibitors engaged and competing at higher levels. All courses involve jumps, so let’s start there.

To teach jumps to a dachshund puppy, start with no jumps at all! Just set up two stanchions; then while on leash, have the puppy walk through stanchions a few times. You can also

When you call the puppy, have your clicker and treat ready, so she is instantly rewarded for coming. As the puppy gets better with the recall, you can add a few more jumps to the process. When the puppy is a little older, like eight months, you can set the bar at 4.˝ The puppy in the accompanying photos is “Molly,” now ten months old, so she has “graduated” to bars that are set at 4˝ high.

Tunnels are fun to teach because your puppy can run fast and unfettered. To train tunnels, start with a shortened form of a tunnel (as in the photo), or a longer one that is straight so the puppy can see light at the other end. You can have a friend hold the puppy on a leash, while you call her through to the other side and feed a treat. If you are alone, you can put a “target” (plastic lid or an upside-down frisbee with a treat) at the other end. Show the puppy the treat on the target, then take her to the other end and send her through. Most dachshund puppies with be happy to oblige, running fast and happily to get the treat! Again, clicker training can be useful here. Be sure to keep the puppy on the leash, so she can’t “cheat” by running past the tunnel to get the food. Dachshunds are smart – if they can cheat for a treat, they will!

For the Standard courses, your puppy must learn to maneuver on the dog walk, the A-frame, the teeter, and stand or sit on the table. To start

Start when the puppy is four or five months old ~ when their “need to know” skills are raging and they want to do everything! For starters, I make it a rule to train my young puppy always wearing a leash. I want her to be successful at whatever skill she is learning and to be rewarded with treats for her efforts. If she is off-lead, she may run off in search of a squirrel or just to bark at passersby. Keeping the dog on-lead until you are confident that she will come when called is an important rule.

Motivational treats are important to use; avoid hard, dry, processed dog cookies. Instead, opt for stripping mozzarella cheese sticks or cut up

lure the puppy around the stanchion, like a figure eight. Always give praises and treats during training. Once the puppy will go through the stanchions, put the bar on the ground (between the stanchions) and work on figure eights, one revolution at a time, so they always come back to you. Clicker training also works well for this exercise. (Click and treat every successful time the puppy goes around a stanchion.)

Once the puppy is familiar with the figure eight exercise, take the lure away and just treat for successful performance. You can then try a recall over the jump. If that is successful, backchain into a jump line starting with just two jumps at first. Have someone hold the puppy behind one jump and call her to you. Since the

training the A-frame, it is useful to lower the frame so there is only a slight incline. (As a point of reference, an AKC course will have an A-frame that measures five feet high in the center for dogs jumping 4˝ and 8.˝ ) Teach the puppy to take the down side first. Pick her up and put her on the frame, then by holding collar and leash so the puppy doesn’t fall, let her run down the incline. (Save training the upside of the A-frame for later.) Have a target with a treat set one to two feet from the base. In this way, the dog is excited to be running on the A-frame and will run all the way down, without leaping off. Note that to qualify in an agility trial, the dog’s feet must always make contact with the yellow bottom border, and the dog can never leap off the side.

Similarly, with the dog walk, start the puppy by picking her up and placing her in the middle of the walk. Keep collar control (your hand on the collar so no accidental fall) and hold the leash up so she won’t trip on it. Then let her walk or run down the dog walk to the target on the ground. (Take advantage of the fact that dachshund puppies are easy to pick up and place on equipment!)

Training the teeter is a little different because it is a moving (not stationary) object. Just like the other contact equipment, with collar control, start the puppy in the middle and not the beginning. Hold the board up (suspended) with one hand so it doesn’t drop with the dog’s weight (see photo). Show a treat and let her travel to the end. Lots of treats and praise when the puppy reaches the end. That is the sweet spot and where you want her to be! In prior years, we often rewarded our dogs for getting to

the center of the teeter when the board started to tip. Over the years, we have learned that by rewarding the dogs in the center of the teeter, we were actually teaching them to slow down at that point, losing precious seconds in competition. The current approach is to teach the dog to come all of the way to the end of the board. Over the next few weeks, depending on the puppy’s age, continue to control the movement of the teeter board, and gently lower it so she gets used to feeling the board move under her as she stands there. If the puppy is really young, jumping onto a wobble board on the floor can be a fun activity that prepares the puppy to stand on a moving floor.

One of the more impressive skills to teach a puppy is to maneuver quickly through the weave poles. Spectators amazed, often ask, “How long did it take to train that?” In all honesty, anyone can lure a dog back and forth through the poles

in a few days, but when the competition gets fierce, you want your dog to some command of the obstacle. Space does not allow for me to provide complete description of training the weave poles – and there are many ways, many opinions, and many thoughts on this subject.

Suffice it to say, I never lure the dog through the poles. This method slows them down and makes them dependent on you! The dog should be independent when doing weave poles – it is her job, and not yours! There is no right way; all can be successful, depending on you and your puppy.

Briefly, I will say to start training weaves with two by twos (sets of two poles together) or a set of six poles is easiest. Use target training so that when the dog chooses the correct entrance (first pole at left shoulder), she is rewarded.

Denny recommended that this be put in the DCA hosting guidelines, so clubs would know each year.

Sandy Arnold will investigate an email group blast to members. Cheryl Shultz has previously looked into software for DCA voting to be done electronically.

Sandy Arnold asked the Board to support Juniors by offering to publish Best Junior win photos (with a dachshund) on the back cover of the DCA Newsletter when it is not sold. The back cover of the National’s issue always has the Best Junior published on the back, but most back covers go unsold/unused. Vicki recommended that we get parents signed permission to use photo, name, etc.

Outstanding Sportsmanship Award In 2006, the American Kennel Club (AKC) Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Program was established to provide each member club with an AKC Sportsmanship Medallion to award to one of its own members on a yearly basis.

In 2017, the Dachshund Club of America (DCA) Outstanding Sportsmanship Award was established and incorporated into DCA’s Standing Rules.

Jerry Cerasini was the creator of the DCA Sportsmanship Award and solicited Janet Schwalbe, Randy Eltringham and Denny Van Hook to assist him in creating a process by which this award could be given on an annual basis. continued on next page...

Basic Award Principles The established DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition for: • Making a difference in the sport of purebred dachshunds • Embodying the AKC Code of Sportsmanship • Being an active and valued member of DCA DCA’s Outstanding Sportsmanship Award is based on these principles and additional criteria that the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award committee believes are important for creating and maintaining a strong culture of good sportsmanship within the dachshund community.

Presentation of an annual DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award trophy in conjunction with the AKC Sportsmanship Award Medallion at the DCA Annual Awards Banquet shall be solely at DCA’s discretion.

Award Criteria Nominees for the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award must meet the shared values outlined in the AKC Code of Sportsmanship: • Sportsmen respect the history, traditions, and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.

• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions for behavior.

• The Sportsman Judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.

• The Sportsman Exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on 26

The Sportsman Exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.

The Sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs.

Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.

Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.

Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.

Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock.

Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them.

Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.

Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport.

Examples of Outstanding Sportsmanship include: (but are not limited to): • Spearheading a successful canine program that benefits dachshunds • Making a major contribution to the breed • Organizing a successful fund-raising program related to the health and welfare of dachshunds • Organizing or participating in dachshund rescue activities • Chairing a committee related to dachshund activities, initiatives, or events • Being a show or event chairperson or secretary • As a leader, being inclusive of current and new club members • Being a consistent available ‘worker bee’ whenever and wherever help is needed • Showing selfless acts of kindness,

fairness, civility, and honesty • Facilitating clear communications that strengthen relationships, build strong teamwork, and share news and information upon which good leadership decisions can be made • Encouraging and fostering local dachshund clubs and building working relationships for the betterment of the breed and participating individuals and organizations • Being responsible and respectful for breeding, training, trialing, and showing according to established AKC and DCA standards for dachshunds

Nomination Process (1) DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award nominations must be submitted by a DCA Member in good standing as validated by DCA’s Membership Chairperson.

(2) The Nomination Package shall include: a. A write up consisting of 300-500 words describing the actions and activities of the nominee that make him or her deserving of this honor. This description should also include how the nominee has exemplified outstanding sportsmanship (not limited to the past 12 months). This write up shall be submitted on the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Nomination Form. Use continuation pages if needed. b. Name and contact information (email; mailing address; phone) of the nominee and the person making the nomination. i. The annual DCA Membership Roster (mailed annually to all DCA members) provides names and contact information for potentially eligible nominees. ii. Please notify the DCA Membership Chairperson if DCA member contact information is incorrect. iii. Each nominee’s length of DCA membership and good standing status shall be verified by the DCA Membership Chairperson once nominations are received.

c. A request will be made of the final award winner to submit a photo that will be used to officially announce and promote the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.

(3) Nomination packages must be: a. Postmarked or submitted by email no later than February 1 of each year. b. Sent to the Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee (as listed in the DCA Membership Roster).

Open Nomination Period and Process To be considered for the award to be presented annually, nominations must be received by February 1, of the following year, after which nominations will be closed for selection purposes. A nomination reminder card shall be mailed to DCA members annually as part of the general DCA membership renewal packet.

Once nomination packages are received as described above, the Chairperson and members of the Sportsmanship Committee shall begin the award selection process.

The Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee shall prepare a list of nominees who meet the announced submission deadline. In early February, this list shall be forwarded to the DCA Membership Chairperson who shall verify the length of DCA membership and good standing status for each nominee and the person submitting each nomination package.

Those who are deemed eligible for nomination shall be so indicated. The list shall then be returned to the Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee for distribution of eligible nomination packages to committee members for further evaluation and voting purposes.

Nomination packages shall be evaluated by the Sportsmanship Committee during the month of February for the prior calendar year award competition.

Selection and Announcement Processes The current Sportsmanship Committee consists of 3 DCA Board Members and one non-Board Member.

These individuals will be responsible for recommending to the DCA Board of Directors (for approval) a minimum of five additional DCA Members in good standing with two alternates all of whom are not DCA Board members, to serve one-year terms of service on the DCA Sportsmanship Committee. The committee chair will contact these additional individuals to verify their willingness to serve on the DCA Sportsmanship Committee.

The Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee shall be appointed by the DCA Board of Directors each year.

Selection Process The Chairperson and members of the Sportsmanship Committee shall review and evaluate nomination packages, vote, and select a final annual award winner, using established award criteria as described above.

The Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee shall not vote. If there is a tie, the Chairperson will cast the tie breaking vote.

Should an eligible Sportsmanship Committee member be nominated, the Chairperson shall ask that individual to recuse him or herself from award evaluation and voting processes.

Once an award selection is made, the Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee shall notify DCA’s President and Corresponding Secretary of the name and contact information of the award recipient to facilitate DCA Annual Awards Banquet planning and subsequent award announcements and promotions.

The DCA Corresponding Secretary shall work with the Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee to notify AKC of the winner and request that the AKC Sportsmanship Award medallion be mailed to the Chairperson of the DCA Sportsmanship Committee for

presentation at the DCA Annual Awards Banquet.

Announcement Processes The Chairperson of the Sportsmanship Committee shall: • Request a photograph from the award recipient (digital format preferred) that can be used to publicize the award and recognize the annual award recipient in such venues as the DCA website, DCA Facebook Page and in the DCA Newsletter.

• Suggest the award winner attend the DCA Annual Awards Banquet so the award can be presented in person.

• If the winner is unable to attend the banquet, the award will be announced at the banquet and the DCA trophy and AKC medallion will be mailed to the recipient.

• Additional public announcements and press releases shall be made at the discretion of DCA. Examples include announcements and promotions of the award and annual recipients at field trials, earthdog tests, agility trials, obedience and rally trials, conformation shows, etc.

DCA Trophy and AKC Award Medallion Integration Funding for award related costs which support an annual presentation of the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award shall be provided as part of the annual DCA budget.

A prototype award, designed and donated by Jerry Cerasini, is available for presentation at the annual DCA Awards Banquet for 2023, 2024 and 2025, after which time the award design will be re-evaluated for long term production purposes.

The AKC Sportsmanship Medallion is provided upon request on an annual basis to DCA at no cost.

As described above, the DCA Outstanding Sportsmanship Award and the AKC Sportsmanship Medallion shall be presented annually to the DCA award recipient at the DCA Awards Banquet.

If the dog chooses the wrong opening, always sound positive and just say, “Good dog, let’s try it again!” Avoid the use of “no” because until the dog understands the drill, she cannot be told “no.” If she does it wrong, she doesn’t get the treat, but does get the opportunity to try again for success.

Many agility skills require the dogs to have a certain amount of self-control so they will sit and stay at the start line. They also should have a solid “sit” on the table. Even though a “sit” position is no longer required, it is less likely that the dog will leave the table during the count of five seconds, if she is told to sit. Selfdiscipline need not be a downer for the dog; if it is taught with an excited release along with treats at the end, the puppy loves the anticipation.

As an aside, some people have confided that they are concerned about dachshunds doing jumps, fearing that their backs could become injured. I have been actively running miniature dachshunds in agility for more than 25 years.

Although it is disheartening that the AKC won’t offer a MACH (Master Agility Championship) title to dachshunds jumping 4 inches (despite their disproportionate short stature and long body), they are eligible to earn a PACH (Preferred Agility Championship). That decision is for each individual to make; some dachshunds do perfectly well jumping at 8 inches. For me, I have resigned myself to the goal of a PACH, more concerned about ensuring the continued welfare of my dogs than earning any title. After all, the dog is learning while

Obedience is a Dachshund’s World!

It is true that some puppies and dogs are not natural “tuggers”, but if you practice this when playing, the dog will soon enjoy the game. Tugging can be used for warming up before training (or events) and can be used as a reward when training. Many times, the tug toy is what

They don’t need to jump full height until they are full grown.

Many times, when one is starting to train, the desire to find a class or a trainer motivates one to join a club or ask people about trainers. Here are a few thoughts from us about training. First, a wonderful trainer can train any breed of dog. The people we have learned the most from never owned a Dachshund, but they understood dogs and how to train. On the other hand, if someone looks at your dog and says with dismay, “Oh, it’s a hound”, consider looking for someone else. True trainers love to train all breeds of dogs. Second, understand training philosophies.

Training philosophies are important to understand, as that philosophy shapes the training experience. Understand how you are being asked to train, and if that meshes with your philosophy. Also understand that what worked for one dog might not work for the next dog. The best trainers have multiple tools in their toolbox. No matter how you train, always enjoy every minute you have with your dog(s). It’s those minutes that will be your happiest memories.!

MY FIRST – AND SECOND AND THIRD – DACHSHUNDS

E

very dachshund owner surely has a story about their first dachshund, its coat, its size, its temperament, its place in the family. Back in the early 1970’s I decided to try a miniature dachshund for hunting. I hunt quarry below ground, mainly woodchucks, raccoons, and rabbits. And because I am a falconer and use a hawk to catch rabbits I needed a small dog with a good nose. I had tried a number of different small terriers and even though they were game they simply could not reliably stay on the track of a rabbit. And if I used them on underground quarry they were quite determined but their size kept them from consistently getting up to their quarry in a den. An earthdog that is too big around the chest cannot get very far through a den and therefore up to the quarry. The smaller and narrower the chest the better for underground work. The terriers could flush rabbits but after that they were pretty lost as far as tracking went. I had researched miniature dachshunds but didn’t know where to get one.

chained to a shed. She was just sitting in the sun, watching people come and go. I asked the farmer about her and he said she had belonged to an elderly couple. They had bred the dog several times to their toy poodle in order to sell cute puppies in front of a local supermarket. One of the elderly people had died and the remaining owner sold the dog to the farmer.

The farmer went on to tell me he didn’t want the dachshund because she had learned to kill his chickens, even though she was chained.

Apparently when the farmer put the dog’s food bowl down, the chickens would come running to eat the food.

The dachshund would back up on the chain until the chickens were in range and then dart out and grab and kill one. (Fig. 1) It occurred to me that a dog with those brains and that willingness to put her mouth on feathers might be a good hunter. The farmer had her AKC papers and named a price. I went home with a new dog.

Taffy (Fig. 2) fit in with the other dogs. She didn’t fight and she accepted kennel life easily.

Besides the small terriers, I had a Bull Terrier

At that time, the mid 1970’s, we owned chickens and geese as well as dogs. I bought their feed at a small farm nearby. The farmer bought and sold small animals and fowl of different sorts. One day while stopping to pick up chicken feed I noticed a small smooth-coated dachshund

as a draw dog (the dog who pulls the quarry out of the den), and a small Plott Hound. Taffy liked people and was quiet in the kennel. All good. I even sent for Taffy’s pedigree. There were no titles of any kind, and the dogs’ names reflected their pet status, names such as Gretchen, Red Lady, Petie, etc.

It was summer, which is when I hunt groundhogs, or woodchucks, as they are also known. These rodents live in dens underground and eat mainly vegetation. They are not welcome in gardens and crop farms.

This was all before locator collars were available, so sometimes I had to dig many holes to get my dogs close to the underground quarry.

On my first hunt with Taffy, all the dogs and I walked for about an hour. Eventually I noticed the new dog, Taffy, was not with us. I didn’t think she would run away and I didn’t hear her barking as if chasing something.

I called for a little while hoping she’d catch up. Then I walked the pack back to my truck, intending to drive the local roads looking for Taf. Well, back at the truck I found her curled up by the front tire, waiting for me. I was very happy to see her. I guess she got tired or didn’t like being far from the truck, but at least she wasn’t lost.

I kept her home another week and tried the same place again. I figured she would recognize the woods and she knew where the truck was in case she decided not to stay with us. Well, in a sort of a replay, after an hour of hunting, Taffy again disappeared. And again I walked the other dogs back to the truck. But this time my Bull Terrier stopped by a groundhog hole, and looked and listened in. I heard a dog barking and darn if it wasn’t Taffy, baying a groundhog. The terriers had run right past the den, their lack of scenting ability missing game. I was of course very happy and dug to Taffy and the Bull Terrier drew and dispatched the varmint. Taffy never looked back.

There was nothing she liked better than finding a fight underground, be it woodchuck, possum, or raccoon. She liked the confrontation better than chasing rabbits. If numbers are a measure of success, the previous summer, hunting with just the terriers, I took 10 groundhogs. The

I liked her so well I decided to breed a litter off her. I knew Taffy didn’t take the wet snow we often had in the winter so I tried to find a miniature wire hair stud. I had written a few articles about Taffy’s good hunting instincts so people knew I hunted my dogs. Well, the first breeders I approached all turned me down. One said: “You’re the one who puts dogs in holes”. If you’ve ever had a keen dachshund you know there’s no need to try to put one in a hole. They willingly enter if there is game underground, and if they don’t want to enter, they won’t. After several weeks of calling different breeders, I found a person in another state who had a black and tan wirehair I would be allowed to breed to.

This little guy, Andy, got the job done and Taffy had a litter of smooths. Andy ‘s owner called one day and asked if I wanted to buy him. I sure did and he turned into a fine rabbit dog. (Fig. 3) I am very grateful this person allowed me to breed to her show dog as the future pups - smooths and wires were all good hunters.

Then one day a friend called about a red smooth miniature dachshund male he couldn’t keep. This man ran an animal actor facility, training all sorts of mammals and birds for television, movies, and Broadway plays. The dachshund was given to him by an airline stewardess who tearfully parted with the dog. She loved the dog but the dog did not tolerate her husband, and when the stewardess was away on long flights, the man and the dog did not get along. The animal trainer really didn’t need this dog for his business and he knew I had a dachshund so he offered Hansel to me. We agreed on a day to pick up the dog. When I got there

the owner met me and said Hansel was around somewhere on the property. The dog had the run of the place, a zoo-like farm with caged enclosures for mainly exotic mammals and birds.

We walked around and called and called but Hansel didn’t appear. The owner was puzzled as Hansel was usually nearby. Then we started walking into the buildings where animals were housed. We did find Hansel, but he was in the mouth of mountain lion, being carried by the neck. He was quite alive but not moving much. The lion didn’t seem to know what to do with this odd ‘toy,’ so it just walked around its cage, carrying Hansel. I thought “there goes my new dachshund”. We stayed calm and the trainer talked soothingly to the big cat. He offered it a large piece of raw meat, a trick that worked. The cat dropped Hansel and came to the trainer for the meat.

We gently pulled Hansel out of the cage. I’d say he was in shock as he didn’t move much. His neck was swollen but not punctured.

He walked sideways for a few days but soon got over the soreness.

With some hunting experience beside Taffy and the other dogs Hansel (Fig. 4) became a very proficient hunter too. Whelped in 1974, his pedigree showed one conformation Champion three generations back. “CH Garner’s Wee HansM”. The rest of the pedigree was like Taffy’s: Tina, Jogo, Missy, Fritz, etc.

So that’s how I got my first - and second and third - dachshunds. Not the usual way, perhaps, but they all showed me that any dachshund has the potential to be good a hunting dog, regardless of pedigree. Taffy, Andy and Hansel proved that.!

AN INVITATION TO HOST THE DCA 2023 AND 2024 NATIONAL SPECIALTIES AT PURINA FARMS This is an invitation from the Dachshund Club of America Board of Directors to all local dachshund clubs. We are looking for clubs to host our 2023 and 2024 National Specialties at the Purina Farms Event Center in Gray Summit, MO. This should prove to be a rewarding and financially profitable way for clubs to host a National Specialty when past challenges of putting on an event of this magnitude may have been out of their reach.

Historically DCA has welcomed bids from local dachshund clubs to host the National Specialty in their own territory but we are in a changing environment.

DCA recognizes that it is getting more difficult for clubs to find suitable sites with adequate convention space and nearby pet-friendly lodging. Additionally, many clubs do not own their own conformation, agility, obedience or rally equipment.

The Dachshund Club of America, Inc. has contracted with Purina Farms as the site for our 2022, 2023 and 2024 National Specialties.

The Central Ohio Dachshund Club will be the host club for DCA in 2022 at the Purina Farms Event Center. DCA is offering other local dachshunds clubs the opportunity to host the National in 2023 or 2024. DCA has contracted the Purina Farms Event Center March 18 25, 2023 (Saturday through the following Saturday), and May 18-24, 2024 (Saturday through the following Friday).

NOTE: Purina Farms is located in the territory of the St. Louis Dachshund Club. DCA has reached an agreement with the St. Louis Dachshund Club to permit other clubs to hold specialties in their territory as the host club for DCA in 2023 and 2024.

Any local club submitting a successful bid to host the National Specialty would be welcome to hold one or two specialties in their club’s name prior to the National Specialty at the Purina Farms Event Center. There are many benefits to holding events at the Purina Farms Event Center. It is a state-of-the-art, full-service facility for dog events. Conformation, agility, obedience and rally events are held indoors in a comfortable, climate-controlled setting. There is indoor grooming space and dog bathing stations as well as comfortable onsite exhibitor services, such as exhibitor changing rooms and a café. The Purina Farms Event Center offers conformation ring equipment, tables and chairs as well as agility, rally and obedience equipment. Purina Farms provides ample parking space for vehicles and fullservice RV spaces with 30 & 50 amp electric, water and sewer connections. As an added bonus, the host club has the privilege of selecting the DCA National Sweepstakes judges for that year. The only set-up for the local club would be any table or ring decorations they wish to display (in compliance with Purina Farms).

The main responsibilities of a local dachshund club hosting the National specialty include: n Creating a theme and artwork (with DCA approval) for the National specialty n Filing all AKC applications for the National specialty, obedience, rally and agility trials within AKC filing deadlines, as well as their own club’s events at Purina Farms. n Negotiating a room block for exhibitors and judges at the host hotel n Arranging meeting space at the host hotel or at Purina Farms for the DCA educational events. n Selecting the DCA National Sweepstakes judges in all three varieties. n Developing premium list & catalog content for the National events as well as any local club events. n Planning morning & evening hospitalities at the host hotel. The only required hospitality event is opening night hospitality and DCA provides the host club a $2000.00 stipend to cover this expense. All other hospitalities are optional but strongly encouraged.

Often other clubs will volunteer to host a morning or evening hospitality to help share the load. n Planning the DCA Awards Dinner at the conclusion of the National Specialty As expected, there are financial implications that clubs will want to consider. Historically, host clubs have benefited financially from hosting the National Specialty since entries are much larger than local events. Clubs would be responsible for the rent of Purina Farms Exhibition Hall on the days of any events held in their name. Clubs would also be responsible for all show secretary/superintendent fees associated with their specialties with the exception of a shared catalog with DCA, with shared catalog expense. Clubs would be responsible for hiring & providing hospitality for their own judges and providing all ribbons and awards for their events. Clubs would have the opportunity to hold their own raffle on the days of their events, retaining all proceeds from their raffle.

DCA is responsible for hiring their own judges, the rent of the Purina Farms Event Center on the days of DCA events, all ribbons and awards for the National Specialty, and all superintendent fees associated with events in DCA’s name. DCA reserves the right to have Ways & Means with all proceeds going to DCA, and to hold a raffle on the days of DCA events with all DCA raffle proceeds going to DCA. We anticipate that interested clubs will have questions that may not have been answered here.

If you are assigned to the Electric Only lot and will be staying for the shows and trials at the Event Center, you will be able to move up to the Full Service Event Center lot on the RV arrival date or as occupancy permits.
