news Delivering the New GR-LSA

Delivering the second GR-LSA during the first week in July, 2014, was an extremely enjoyable exercise for pilot Howie Hughes, as the Hughes Engineering Team haven’t undertaken a delivery of this length for some time. Most purchasers simply pick up their aircraft from the factory in Ballina, in Northern New South Wales, and depart from there.

Part of the exercise for this flight was to assess the effectiveness of the OzRunways Navigation application (available for iPad & Android), which in turn, proved its worth within ten minutes of the wheels leaving the ground at Ballina.

coast to Caloundra, with the OzRunways App, this was an extremely easy navigational exercise. Flying out over Chinchilla I got a bird’s eye view of what coal seam gas is all about as this place really is a chemical nightmare with gas wells, pipes, dams, and roads criss-crossing what was obviously beautiful farm land. I gained a new appreciation of what the local Bentley blockade and the demonstration’s against coal seam gas were all about.

Heading now north-west for the last leg, I was now in the real outback, marvelling now at the beautiful colours of the vegetation and the rocks below. I flew out over Cork Station, and then After a very short time into the on to Old Cork Station, out over flight I rapidly realised it was cold, the Diamantina and felt I was the day was getting cooler, the taking a step back into the histowind was getting bumpier and the ry books with John Williamson’s mountains were looking extreme- voice wafting, Redgum’s song in ly unfriendly. So with not too the back of my brain “…and the much thought I swung the aircraft rain never falls on the dusty Dianorth and headed up the mantina, and I won’t be back till

the droving’s done…” Landing at my destination was the end of an extremely enjoyable two day trip. I was very happy with the performance of the GR-LSA as well as OzRunways. I found OzRunways a joy to use, particularly in the outback where it’s possible to enlarge the maps to the highest possible magnifications to pick out the smallest tracks in the outback, which assisted with the extra visual cues needed to ensure you know exactly where you’re going. All in all, a great fun trip. 7 Read the complete transcript of Howie’s trip at the ALW Diary Website https:// australianlightwing.wordpress.com/

All-round good guy.

“ I fee l a g rea t s e n s e of f reedom in the diversity

How did you come to work for Hughes Group? Being the boss’s son, I finished school and then I chucked myself in the deep end, straight to working at LightWing. And now I pretty much do anything and everything in the office and workshop. Do you have your pilot’s license? Most definitely; I got my Ra-Aus license before I started working here, in my early teens, as a kid, after school. Do you go through the Ballina High School Aviation course? Yes I did. I already had my license by then, however, during year 9 and 10, I was one of the first grades to start working on the GR 912 (80 hp tail dragger) kit LightWing aircraft that the Ballina High School aviation course constructed. What’s you favourite part of working here? The fact that I am capable of doing nearly every part of the business and construction, I feel a great sense of freedom in the diversity.

converted over to the faster low wing and I love that too! I would be more than happy to jump in either and go for a blat any day. I enjoy taking friends and potential customers for an introductory flight, to show them our beautiful area and demonstrate just how great our aircraft perform. If you bought a plane today, which would you buy? And what would you choose for your custom paint job? I would buy the SP2000 for its versatility and range. To travel long distances comfortably for weekend getaway’s. For a paint job, I like the red one! And I would choose black as the contrast colour. If a spare part is ordered today, what would be the turn around time? There is a large range of parts that I keep in stock, but if it has to be made, depending on the size and item, I turn it round within a week or so. What is the most frequently asked question from customers? The most faq is “How fast?” And the answer is: The SP2000 cruises at about 100/110knots ((170/1280kms), and the high wing LightWing’s cruise at 70/75 knots (120kms/hr).

What’s it like working with Howie Hughes? We have our ups and downs and a couple head butts and arguments, but other than that he is Where do you see Australian generally really quite good. alw profile:

Terry Donaldson

Mechanical Engineer, Welding Master, Overall legend.

How did you get into building with steel? I served my time as a fitter & turner machinist; that was my original trade. I worked with steel right through high school. I went for an apprenticeship with Green Park Engineering in New Zealand. It was a general engineering workshop. How did you first come to work at Australian LightWing? I first started back in 1988 when I was about 30, working for John Heard. John was a boat builder and a steel contractor for Howard. He originally started working for Howard building the trawler called the “Shell-Lee-N”. (Howard began his career as an architect, then as a boat builder and then aircraft). My first job for Light Wing was building a steel seat for one of the earliest the LightWing’s. I started on seats and progressed to airframes for two years and then John gave it away and Howard asked if I wanted to work for him at the original factory back in Smith Drive. The first airframe I ever built was on aircraft number 4. We’re up to number 200 now! How’s the Cunning Cat Catamaran project coming along? I’m happy with how it’s com-

ing along & looking forward to seeing it finished. I want to see an aesthetically nice finish. Howard says what he wants and I give him what he wants. After the amount of years that I’ve worked for him, I get his language. We think the same… I am a little bit eccentric myself.

research and development. I like teaching people... I’ve taught a lot of people. It’s a finesse trade – like welding is not just welding, it’s tig or mig welding, & specialist welding. Different types of welding are aluminium, stainless, chrome molly, gas. I’ve done it all.

Why do you say you’re eccentric yourself?! Because I’ve worked for your Howie for twenty-five years! No… I like to dream up ideas, and then make them happen.

What’s your least favourite job? Grinding fibreglass would be the job I like the least.

What’s some of the idea’s you’ve dreamt up? The simulator was partly my idea. And I have this idea for a house that’s like a beehive, where every side on it is a hexagonal wall. We’re pondering on different ideas, we always are. A lot of my ideas he uses, he just doesn’t always admit to it straight away! What’s your favourite part of the job? I like projects – I like to get a mast and build the whole thing, see the project through to completion, which I do a lot of. I like the

Do you like getting your hands dirty? No. I don’t like getting my hands dirty. (He’s laughing though...) What’s it like to work with Howie & Nicky? Nick and I have a happy working atmosphere and we speak the same language when it comes to engineering. I like designing things with Howard, although it has its moments and challenges. What do you to relax? I don’t get to relax! I own a farm! (laughs) I play guitar, drums and play music.h

news The Road-E Electric Vehicle

Australian LightWing’s desire to contribute to solutions to climate change has resulted in our development of what we hope will be Australia’s first production, all Australian designed, three-seat, electric motor vehicle.

The Road-E is driven by state-of-theart electronics and batteries and features an ultra-sleek and ultra-light aerodynamic body. Driving with a single rear wheel with two steerable wheels up front. And yes, there are a lot of similarities between the body of our Road-e and our Australian
