CO-ordinators message Welcome to the 2018-2019 NCEIA Dolphin Music Awards. Yes, that is right- we skipped a year, which calls for an explanation. So this is how it went‌. ‌Our website went down and after much ado it turned out that we were unable to resuscitate it. It was dead and gone so instead of succumbing to technological rage we set about rebuilding it which also did not work out. Next, we researched our options and found that our meagre budget of next to nothing, (as we are a not for profit organisation made up of volunteers), was not going to be enough to set up a brand new functioning website which then led us to the idea that perhaps we could succeed in gaining access to a grant so while we waited without a website we were unable to run the 2018 Awards. Being the house of cards that it is no website, no entries, no entries, no awards. But then a miracle came our way, the sublime Shelly Brown came to the rescue and volunteered to build us a website. One of our other very astute volunteers Wendy Ford put us onto Song Central, a company that would upload & process the songs and data through their portal for a percentage of the entry fees. Now we are here at the 2019 Awards Night with thanks to a lot of hard work put in by the core crew that includes the gracious Jennifer Parenteau who has also worked night and day towards this event. FUN FACTS 400+ entries this year 23 categories made it through 63 judges listened to the entries multiple times so there were ears at work between 800 & 1000 times during the judging period 39 sponsors giving prizes or services to help bring this all together 40+ Original musicians on stage this year 33 Crew to put this show together And numerous volunteers manning the doors, bands, liaison, certificates and more. Have a wonderful Night! Mariska Pinkerton page. 3

Who's playing tonight?

ACT 1 - THE FORTUNATE SOULS : : : : A revolving group of accomplished musi-

cians inspired by raw production aesthetics and in-the-moment performances. A Better Place, their second studio album, blends contemporary thought with old school values. Their love of intertwining parts, creating a sum far larger than any individual, make for some musical moments that cannot be predicted. ACT 2 - BRENDAN SMOOTHER : : : : Winner of the country category last year at the Dolphin Awards, Brendan Smoother has had a great 2018/19, picking up a Tamworth Songwriters Association Award in January & a Songs Alive Australia Award just a few months ago. He released his debut album ‘In The Meantime’ in 2018 and had a number 1 country hit with Gypsy GirL. ACT 3 - JEX LOPEZ AND THE GRAVEDIGGERS : : : : A queer electro-acoustic cabaret noir band creating quirky tales about skeletons, clowns and queer planets. Intelligent, irreverent lyrics, sexy & soulful sax and warm guitar coupled with electronic elements create a fusion soundtrack sound with haunting Latin influences. Jex Lopez and The Gravediggers create a satirical yet emotive experience. ACT 4 - ANGIE HUDSON : : : : Since Angie released her debut EP in 2017 ‘opens’ it received triple J play and was praised by roots n all presenter Nkechi Anele stating that ‘Angie’s ability to break your heart with her voice is out of control’. Usually with her iconic trio; Freyja Hooper (Drums/Percussion) & Shaun Johnston (Bass) where they deliver an enchanting performance of woven melody, textures & rhythm. Angie has always enjoyed exploring the dynamics of creativity and performance, & has since been collaborating with Laurell Laxxes, Nada Katana, Emily Lubitz, Aine Tyrell, and Merryn Jeann. ACT 5 - DAVID HALLETT : : : : Nimbin performance poet, David Hallett, has been writing and performing his poetry since the mid 1970s, winner of the 2019 Reciter of the Year Award, twice winner of the Poetry Olympics at the Sydney Writers Festival, David has hosted two of Australia’s longest running poetry shows at Byron Bay and Lismore for over 27 years & David has been the organiser of the Blue Moon Cabaret in Nimbin, three times a year, for over 20 years. ACT 6 - THE NINTH CHAPTER : : : : Layering elements of funk, blues and folk, the Australian six-piece revel in exciting songwriting that takes listeners on a diverse musical journey. With over a decade of touring and three EPs to their name, the band launched their first full-length album early 2019 which is a finalist for Album of the Year. ACT 7 - NOCTURNAL SYNDROME : : : : Nocturnal Syndrome are a metal band from Far North Coast, NSW, featuring Jaedon McCulloch on Vocals and Guitar, Cameron McCulloch on Drums and Vocals, and Harrison Smith on Bass. Winners of the Gromet section of the Byron Bluesfest Busking Competition. ACT 8 - JOSH LEE HAMILTON : : : : Known for his smooth and captivating sound and his honest & heartfelt songs. “Never a disappointment with this artist. Magic. When you first listen to this song you can totally hear that surfer-guitarist vibe come through, but before that thought is complete, those vocals trickle in and give you full body shivers. This is so great!”; Nkechi Anele’s (Triple J) review of the single “With the Wind” ACT 9 - THE ROCHELLE LEES BAND : : : : The Rochelle Lees Band has recently expanded their brand to write their own pop originals fronted by Rochelle Lees and Lachlan Renwick (bass/keys) the band have been developing a commercial pop/rock sound alongside Matt Day (songwriter/guitarist) and Alex Kilroy (drummer). page. 10

From humble beginnings to lead Triple J producer When he finished high school, Nick Gerber says he didn’t know much about anything, but he knew he wanted to work in media. “I was a shy, awkward kid who could barely talk on the phone, but I loved music.”

It was a dream Nick pursued relentlessly, cutting his broadcasting teeth at ABC Newcastle and applying for jobs at Triple J until he eventually got offered an assistant producer’s position.

Nick enrolled in a media degree at Southern Cross, and that’s when he fell, quite unexpectedly, in love. “At the time, we all thought radio was dying. This was before podcasting became such a big thing. But then I did the radio part of the course and one of our assignments was listening to different programs and trying to work out how they were put together technically and that just really turned me on to radio and particularly Triple J – to work there became my dream.”

Nick has worked on the Triple J Hottest 100, the popular Like a Version segment, as a lead producer on Breakfast and even live broadcasting from Splendour in the Grass. He now works as a producer across the Drive and Breakfast programs. Not bad for a boy who couldn’t talk on the phone.
