coordinators welcome message
This year the presidency changed hands midyear from the astounding Brett Hamlyn to the sublime Gary Pinkerton, so for your welcome you have me instead of these great men. I am Mariska the NCEIA Dolphin Music Awards Coordinator. Music is part of my soul so that is why I am here even though I am not a musician myself. As a child I sat playing my parent’s record collection, as the music took me to other worlds of feeling. As I grew up, I was one of these people who would throw caution to the wind by getting up to dance on the first song at a gig. My strategy went something like this: “If I get up, the other people who really want to dance but are too shy, will feel comforted and join me on the dance floor, and if they get up as well, then the musicians will enjoy themselves more and will play up a storm!” I was the crazy lady who purposefully played music up loud and danced joyously while my children were still in utero because I wanted them to feel the music. Now that my bones are more decrepit I pay homage to the greatness of music, by supporting this fantastic event, where the people who put their heart and soul on the line to play us a song are celebrated. Each and every person in this 2017 NCEIA Dolphin Music Awards auditorium plays an important part in this event. The entrants, musicians, judges, sponsors, family, friends and the NCEIA team all are here for the thing that is dear to my heart: Music. In this book you will find a THANK YOU page which is well worth a look. You will also find the SPONSORS pages, as well as all the artists who will play tonight. You will find the musicians who are the FINALISTS this year, whose music touched someone on its way to this night. You will also see a list of all who entered this year; all who were gutsy enough to have their music judged. With 268 songs in total and having personally listened to a lot of the songs, there was an extraordinary amount of talent, , including songs from our missing categories: Music for Children, Hard and Heavy and for the first time the Blues Category, which didn’t have enough songs to go forward. If I could give you each a listen to all of the music you would be astounded, so it is with this in mind that I say: Enjoy. Mariska. THE 2017 NCEIA DOLPHIN MUSIC AWARDS

ACT 1 MICK MCHUGH An artist not afraid to address tough issues, hardships & plight, but at the same time layering it in his trademark hope. In the words of legendary English troubadour Ralph McTell, McHugh’s music gives “cause for hope and optimism”. Mick will release his debut studio album early 2018. ACT 2 MOLLY MILLINGTON 17 year-old songwriter from the Central Coast of NSW. Over ‘16 & ‘17, She won the Bluesfest Busking Comp (Grom Sect.); Fretfest for “Somebody Else”; the young artist award in the Songsalive comp for “Drive Thru Queen”; & the 94one’s Rising Star Award. ACT 3 ROUND MOUNTAIN GIRLS Opened 2017 with a new album, a national tour of Australia & a main stage slot at the iconic Bluesfest. If Mumford and Sons, The Pogues & Metallica had a threeway lovechild it would be a Round Mountain Girl. With 4 genre busting albums behind them, they’ve been coined as the ‘finest purveyors of Celtabillypunkfolkrootsgrass’ in the southern hemisphere’. ACT 4 THE LOVEYS Five feisty yet quite well-mannered women, who write & sing original songs that tell a story & celebrate the art of living large. Formed three years ago in Mullumbimby, together they span an age range of 5 decades & produce a unique Loveys sound that involves wonderful vocal harmonies & melodies, using an eclectic group of instruments & a strong sense of comedy. ACT 5 HANNAH PARRINGTON is a fifteen year old, singer/songwriter, with a passion for writing up beat, catchy pop songs. Hailing from the hinterlands of Byron Bay, Hannah has performed at the Blues Festival and Mullum Music Festival. 2015 saw her debut EP released at the age 13 after crafting songs since she was only 8 years old. ACT 6 THE BUCKLEYS are a teenage sibling trio from Australia. Amalgamating their love for, & upbringing in, Country Music with the influence of Rock’n’Roll, Blues, Motown, Swing, Jazz & even Funk, their unique sound & honest lyrics create an appeal that resonates with multiple genres & across numerous demographics. ACT 7 TAY OSKEE is this year’s Bluesfest Busking Comp winner, he is a multi-instrumentalist playing guitars, banjo, harmonica & percussion. With a musical style that is wide & varied Tay can take you on a journey from chilled beach tunes to punchy riff driven roots music with distinctive multicultural influences. ACT 8 CHRIS STAFF Won NCEIA Country category 2013 single ‘Storm’s A Comin’ surged straight to the No.1 spot on top of the Australian Country Music charts in March 2017 ACT 9 MATTY ROGERS 2016 NCEIA Male Vocal Winner. Real & raw, his music is something you feel as much as hear. This is soul rock blues at it’s finest. His songs are born for the big stage, as punters at Falls, Byron Blues & Broadbeach Blues Festivals have testified this past year. From the North Coast of NSW, Matty has carved out a fan base through sheer hard work & an undying love to connect & share his music. 11
