The AJFHL was established in 2009 for female hockey players 18-21 years old to continue playing hockey at a competitive level after Midget.
Founding members included: Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Irma, Spruce Grove, Red Deer, Wainwright and Edmonton. In 2011 the AJFHL expanded with teams in Calgary and Cremona. Currently there are eleven teams spread over the province with five in the North and six in the South.
